If there's anything I learned from this stream, it's that I could make a pretty effective horror game just by having a pop up at the start saying "this is a horror game"
Or it would at least be effective for Pointcrow
And then make it not even a horror game.
I think it works for Outer Wilds bc the base game was already kinda spooky and creepy, even scarier for people with certain phobias - so when these competent devs give you that warning, you know shit's going down.
And I think it really does a good job of making the player dread when the game will turn into horror. Until then, their imagination runs wild as they explore and discover, i.e the basis of terror, whereas horror is more jumpscarey

That'd make it too obvious, it'd be more effective to have a warning that reads more like "This game might get a little spooky sometimes." This leaves the player full of dread for the entire game while they imagine how spooky the spooky part of the game is gonna be and when it's going to arrive, especially if your game isn't primarily a horror game.

The fact that you opened the secret passage by accident still baffles me :D The devs intentionally put two lanterns there to prevent this from happening, but you forgot your first one in the projector room and went back to take the second one from the same paining. Amazing! xD

Missing the "New Exhibit" sign but picking up on the ink blot on the sun AND understanding the angles was INSANE! Usually, I've seen most people have to really struggle to understand what's so... different. PartialCredit really gets this game.
OKAY THE ACCIDENTAL PAINTING OPENING?????? ERIC????? What IS this man? And it was IMMEDIATELY after saying something about "finding something too early / spoiling something in the game"
"I wish I didn't find that one thing and knowing that there's one gone" out of all of the ones to stumble into, he also picked the PERFECT one to be spooked by. Amazing.
The timing never fails: a raft randomly getting swept into the dam's lift at JUST the right time.

I first came across the secret passage after whichever tower (i forget which) had been slammed by the water and all the lanterns went out, and I BARELY MISSED being spooked by the bodies WHILE UNDERWATER and I have thalassophobia.
I noticed the ink blot really quickly because I knew the DLC had something to do with eclipses from the promo art and stuff. Kinda wish I didn't lol.

What i find hilarious about this expansion is how it isn't really scary. Creepy and unsetling on multiple levels yes, but the only real fear here is that of unkown. Playing outer wilds spoilers are something to be avoided at any cost so it's likely player will only know there is something frightening inside, so they will scare themselves trying to prepare. Only to find that, at least in my case, there is nothing there and every complete piece of puzzle gained makes it less and less panic-inducing.
Whether the devs intented this or not, but I gotta say that "For people who get easily scared, we added Reduced Fright"-message makes it 1000x scarier from the very beginning where there isnt even anything to be scared of. Either completely genius or lucky
@@mattay-gg2zt (spoilers) exactly! ngl it was sort of a let down, realising that the characters really aren't that intimidating. you can easily juke them by flashing then walking around them.
it doesn't help that i discovered the endless canyon knowledge before anything else, which made finding patrol patterns trivial.
pointcrow pretty much does hot shot in one go as warm up, while i’ve been trying for months.

This was a surprise. Genuinely one of my favorite games/dlc of all time. I can't really replay a game like this, but its fun seeing someone new play it.

Just a heads up, not really a spoiler but might help calm the nerves, the game has spooky vibes yes. But if there are any genuinely scary parts, you initiate them and you KNOW it’s happening. You don’t have to be on edge while just walking around, there are only specific parts that have anything actually scary, and again, they make it very clear when you are starting one of them

The defs knew what they were doing with the "reduced frights" warning. They are trying to create an atmosphere overall.
So if you want to take the atmosphere, then yeah tell him right to the second when he should feel spooked.
This game is overall less scary than dark bramble, it’s equivalent to if vanilla outer wilds had like 3 extra dark brambles and was more spooky outside of them
I truly believe that the EotE is like a new game.

the reason why the dam fails is not really explained ingame.
i believe it's because the whole station moves away from the sun once it starts changing to avoid the supernova and the strain of the sudden acceleration is too much for the millenia old dam.
you can shoot a probe at the dam to see it's structural integrity dropping in realtime.
...and i really should have waited just a few minutes more.

I really enjoyed the playthrough of the base game, but didn't expect to see the dlc so soon since I remember it being mentioned that the game didn't do too well on stream. I can't overstate how great of a surprise this is!

Funny situation, finished main game outer wilds, then watched his vods on his playthrough as a possible way to satiate my post playthrough depression. Then he started playing the dlc before I even touched it. Many hours later, here I am again to watch his playthrough now that I've finished the dlc

SPOILERS BELOW
Although never explicitly stated I think the reason the dam breaks is because the Stranger moves automatically in response to the impending supernova, causing structural instability. This is supported by the fact that if you put the scout on the dam, it begins counting down its integrity at the same time the "sails" come out. You also hear the dam creaking around that time. Otherwise, it'd be a very large coincidence the dam lasted so long without breaking only for it to break for us when we arrive.

And the "less scary" adds very small scares while it has none when it’s off

Aaaaaaaand here's comment number 2 already. I've noticed that when using a Switch Pro Controller to play this the button inputs seem to be completely wack. Looks like that's what was happening to you at the start where X was Y and Y was X. I just had it set to show the Xbox button icons and that matched perfectly with my Pro Controller.
