@Southerncountryboy1981 LAPD will be implementing a new pursuit tactic to bring chases to end with traffic cones after seeing this tanker truck getting stopped in its tracks by a single traffic cone. Those cones don't mess around :O
I bet the cone was activating the tractor's collision mitigation. Basically new semi tractors have a collision mitigate where there's a forward facing radar (right about where the cone was at) and it will make the computer in the truck think there's an object and apply the brakes.

Trucker here, I’ve driven over cones (those big highway style ones) in the past when construction workers were jerks about not letting me through.

This was by far the LEAST dangerous chase those officers will ever have taken part in. Gotta hand it to that driver, he was definitely safer than I ever expected someone to be with such a large truck. Good show.

That driver in the red car did the smart thing by backing up. Getting hit by a city or county vehicle, you'll be chasing after your money for months. They'll drag out paying you for as long as they can.

As a truck driver, my guess of why the cone stopped him is because the truck may have been equipped with a Bendix system on the front bumper, a sonar device that automatically stops the truck if you get to close to an object to stop or reduce the severity of an accident. usually only works on solid material like stone or metal, but the cone may have been dense enough to actually trip the sonar.

This chase proved something: the reporters have NO clue about driving a semi. 1) if it wasn't an automatic (it didn't appear to be) there are multiple gears for him to shift through and 2) the cone did NOT stop him. The reporters talking about his driving made about as much sense as I would if trying to explain how to fly a helicopter.
What are you on about? The cone did stop him. It was clearly one of the smart cones that automatically connect to your truck's ECU via bluetooth and immobilize it by cutting off the fuel supply when you get too close to it. And of course the truck is automatic, this is America.
What stupidly arrogant thing to say... of course they don't know how to drive a truck, they aren't truck drivers YFDA, they chose, instead, to get an education. Truck drivers know nothing about news or journalism or obeying the law or being decent human beings.. or...

the fact that the driver actually was respectful of surroundings and not ramming through cars though, and the fact that, even with clearly visible cops behind him he didn't ram through the cones, which does make sense because he was driving a tanker which probably had flammable stuff in it.

You can, but it is extremely difficult to do when your trailer is several times longer than your vehicle. If you don't have much experience with backing up trailers, it's not even worth trying.

Just a semi-trailer, though long. Backing a full rig (Truck + 8-wheel trailer) is somewhat trickier.
