The police don’t ever take their keys when they leave their cars on a call. Only when the take a long or short coat (lunch break or a crap)! I don’t understand why they don’t have the older Crown Victs had a button you had to press before you could put the vehicle in drive after stopping in a chase with lights & siren on but apparently not any more.

We rarely use "emergency brakes or parking brakes here in the US. Our cars are automatic...Putting them in park is just fine.

The ineptitude of the LA Police & Sheriff at ending chases is incredible. This leaves bad guys in potentially lethal weapons doing what they want for hours on end. Putting innocent people's lives at risk the whole time.
They could end it any time they want. It's politics. They do a pit in the wrong place, shoot out the tires or whatever you're thinking, then someone gets hurt. Or "someone could've gotten hurt!" and the cop hears it from the captain, who hears it from the chief. If the incident gets enough media attention, the mayor calls the chief/sheriff to yell at him. If someone gets killed, people start losing their jobs. The pursuing officers are just grunts. Your anger should be directed at politicians.
Then starts the lawsuits!
It's not on the actual Cops as individuals, it's because of the POLICIES AND GUIDELINES. You can lose your job if you don't abide "by the book." Just another reason I'd never want to be Law Enforcement. Mainly it's the huge amount of work, garbage schedule and mediocre pay. However following guidelines that closely with the risk of being fired for messing up is another lol

I was leaf blowing a parking lot one night, used to clean lots for a living. Noticed a cop pull over a car at one end of the lot and went back to cleaning. Next thing I saw was the cop's car sideswiping a light pole and then crashing into the shopping cart corral. And behind it was the cop running after it. I was asked to fill out a report for the cops that showed up to handle it. They kept asking me to retell the story to other cops as they arrived, laughing every time I told it. That poor cop, I just kept telling him that no one got hurt, he was going to be ok. That's when he told me the last time he forgot to put it in park the car ended up rolling onto its roof in the median. LOL
The funniest thing is that they were all laughing at your telling of the story, lol

Authorities arrested a woman who led police on a chase in a stolen Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department patrol SUV Monday afternoon.
The chase began about 1:30 p.m. and continued onto the eastbound Artesia (91) Freeway and into Orange County.
At about 2 p.m., the suspect exited the freeway in the Fullerton area, and headed onto surface streets, trailed by law enforcement vehicles. The suspect drove through an industrial area and briefly stopped, but then sped away again.
Authorities say the car was stolen during a traffic stop in the Compton area.
The pursuit ended in Anaheim around 2 p.m. where the suspect in the stolen cruiser was cornered by other police vehicles and taken into custody.

To those saying "just take out the keys", keep in mind every police vehicle has a computer system in the back, along with a full lighting system, both of which takes an immense amount of power hence the beefed up electrical system. if the car wasn't on, then the electrics wouldn't run, and that's a problem especially with how long the computer system can take to turn on
Iirc the current generation Chevy Tahoe does have a smart key access that allows the car to be on while the doors are locked, however this is a 2011-2015 Ford Explorer which didn't even have a back up camera standard
And no, it couldn't do 160mph. The current Explorer, which is the fastest police vehicle you can buy, can't do 160mph, where this is (at the latest) 8 years old
Ford police vehicles are designed to be able to be left running without a key but they cannot be driven unless the key is in the ignition. So, this officer left the vehicle running with the key in it.
@Peter Angles according to the Michigan state police, LA county sheriff and Ford themselves, the Explorer 3.3L is the fastest 0-60 (5.8 seconds) and top speed (148mph) vs the V8 Charger (6.4 and 140mph respectively)
That being said, I'm not sure if any of this is with equipment but regardless no factory police vehicle can do 160

Can't have remote kill switches due to federal transportation regulations set by Congress plus the Fourth Amendment states “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” If the remote kill switch is being used during a police pursuit and no warrant is obtained, then that's a violation of the Fourth Amendment.

Why are they calling the car theif a suspect? Suspects are people that might be the perpetrator(s), not people that are. When you are driving a stolen police car, you are not a suspect. You are a car theif. Another example of the misuse of the word suspect.
More misuse of our language: Surface streets, airship, high rate of speed, and bound when giving direction of travel. Here on land we have city streets and aircraft; no surface streets and no airships; those are when you are on the ocean!!! And no need to say high rate of speed, the words “rate of” are not needed. Never, ever leave your patrol unit unlocked, and never leave the ignition key or fob in
the vehicle. This is a serious violation of protocol.
Note: The top speed of a Ford Explorer police utility is 148 mph. Reported speeds of 160 mph are not possible. Only a Dodge Charger police interceptor will go that fast.
Arkansas state police needs to take over CA law enforcement- these chases would far less frequent.
