Listening to a British guy talk about hockey always throws me off, but this was a VERY high quality and educational video! Good job and I hope to see more videos like this.
@@holoholopainen1627 my comment was just meant to be humourous, but you're telling me that he reaches a wider audience just because he has a British accent? I mean it's not as if he is speaking a different language.
@@TinnieTa21 Ok ! Thanks / Merci for Your Comment ! Do You have any IDEA - Who He Really Is ? I have been watching Mr Trump for an CNN Week - but He is Not My President ! So When Someone I happen to know - talks to Me MORE IN PERSON ! RUclipsrs are Famous in Their OWN WAY ! Have You ever Heard The Mogilny Story Before ? Howmany NHL / AHL Players know anything about UK / GB Hockey ?
Its good i can still come here in this anxiety inducing time of uncertainty. Please keep making videos you have no idea how much it means to your viewers to come to your videos and escape reality for 10-20 minutes
Mogilny’s act had a huge effect on people. In Soviet Union this never happened. Everyone was told it’s the best country in the world. So an officer defecting to the enemy was a proof to everyone that the country was about to fall apart.
also, this is why AlMo should be in the hall of fame, he changed the game for Russians to play in the NHL, and had over 1000 points in his career. Come on you jackasses at the hall of fame committee, put AlMo in.
It wasn't just Russia - it was any player that was stuck playing behind the "Iron Curtain" which was the USSR..... That's when I kinda laugh when they say guys like Hasek or Mogilny were "draft steal" - as if every GM wasn't aware of these guys, as if a couple of scouts really did their homework while others didn't....No, these guys were drafted in later rounds for political reasons and for reasons like Alex Mogilny's story.... Back in the 70's and 80's GM's could have never foreseen the USSR falling or the USSR allowing it's players to head to North America which is whey they were drafted so late - GM's didn't want to waste a pick on a player that most likely would never play a game in North America despite the fact how talented they were - it just wasn't a possibility then, but just in case they picked these superstars in later rounds IF one day the USSR collapsed or players from the USSR were granted permission to play in North America - they wanted their teams to hold the negotiating rights if that was ever going to happen and sure enough it did..... I mean there were no players from the USSR that were drafted below the 6th round no matter how good they were before 1990-91 or so.... Of course when the USSR fell - tons of Russians started coming over Kutov, Konstantinov, Larionov, Urbe etc..... But Mogilny was a different situation because when he defected the USSR had not officially collapsed so they had to essentially "smuggle" him out of the country.... Yea, I know it sounds ridiculous now but back then that's how it worked..... I mean the closest thing to what Mogilny went though was the Stastny Brothers -- and to be honest these guys stories would make for a fantastic movie, given what they had to do to defect just to play hockey in the NHL.
Every single high end Russian hockey player who refused to take PED’s was cut from the team there was no exception that’s why many of them had difficulties in the transition only the elite players were able to sustain a career in the west
You didn't mention that for 'allowing' star players to move to the NHL, the Soviet hockey federation was payed ransom by NHL teams for those players - big bucks.
Interesting, except he's not European, he's Asian. Molginy's home town of Khabarovosk is in the Russian Far East, further east than even all of China, and not far from the Pacific.

Alexander Mogilny should be in the Hall of Fame
@Tyler Haraf why
Tyler Haraf His production and his importance to the growth of the game beg to differ.
It’sma shame Mogilny and Malik’s did get included into the 100 Greatest
Mogiliny, Federov and Bure... Good luck.

Still can't believe players would drop 70+ goal seasons
When Team Selanne joined JETS as a Rookie - They both scored 76 Goals ! They had a Race - Who would Score MORE GOALS !

This video was awesome, I’d like to see you make one on the shortest NHL player ever! Roy Worters!
Mogilny is an absolute legend, that’s a sweet escape right there.
My favourite player thank you so much for this video
Damn that's a terrifying line Mog Bure and Fed on the same line lmao that would have been best line in the NHL lmao
Another magnificent story, makes me want to fire up the old Mega Drive and plug in NHLPA 93 now.
NHL 94
It’s just sad that tretiak never got to play in the NHL he would have been a star
He was above average hockey player but he could never ever pass a drug test
These videos are awesome!
Dude love your videos.
Love the accent even more, southern Jersey ?
Great story buddy. I remember story as I was myself part of USSR.

暗黒騎士 Ankokukishi and had a 76 goal season
and he won a cup
The fact that he is not, especially given some of the players that are, is a travesty.
Thanx for the vid
Great video
Great video!
What happened to his family after he defected?
Great video rush!
Absolute fucking legend

This is so sick
so glad i have an AlMo leafs jersey
i got a Canucks one!
It's like the Stastny brothers
You mean The Hansons ?
I had no idea
sweet video
Wasn't Nechaev the first in 1980?
I still think Alex was the most dangerous player that ever played in nhl. He was just a bit better than the other 2. And a better defensive player.
I'm not sure defecting to post-industrial 1989 Buffalo was that much of a shock from Khabarovsk, Soviet Union.
Every single high end Russian hockey player who refused to take PED’s was cut from the team there was no exception that’s why many of them had difficulties in the transition only the elite players were able to sustain a career in the west
What happened to his family?
They were interrogated I believe but no harm thankfully, I believe hes a coach for Russia now as well
...like a vapor trail....
Nice vid

Any Buffalonians remember la la la la la Fontaine!!!!!!! He played with mogilny
Wasn Ptr Klima about 10 YEARS before him?
Klima defected in 1985. But he wasn't from the SOVIET Union! He was from Czechoslovakia!
@Speez71rm No! They are separate countries! Notice the commie bastards played Czechoslovakia in international hockey tourneys.
The Hockey HOF is the biggest joke of all the HOFs in sports for not having Alex in.
Wonder where and what He’s doing now?
He's the president of his hometown KHL Team
Many of Europeans have trouble with the Canadian style of play
Was that the phone booth from Bill and Teds excellent adventure?
Yup
eeeeeeehhhhhh that would be a good indie flick
I know Matts Sundin was from Europe.
Might have lost a season to lockout. That’s why he didn’t get 500. Still an all time great though.
The 92 and 95 seasons were also lockouts I believe but not for a whole season like in 05
Howevaaa.....! : )

White russian = european.
Even Alaska was Once Russian !
Don Luce = Don "Loose", not Don "Loo-chay"!
Don Loose (proper pronunciation) 👍🏻
