  • We're going back to Old School Guys on this episode of The Chazz Palminteri Show! This week I sit down with one of pioneers of Hip-Hop, Sal Abbatiello.
Sal Abbatiello is an executive in the music business. Abbatiello created and produced the freestyle, urban/dance-pop trio, The Cover Girls, whose hits include "Show Me" and "Wishing on a Star". Abbatiello is also the owner of Fever Records.
Sal is Bronx born and a native, starting as a bartender in his father’s bar. The disco era was taking over the club scene in Manhattan with Studio 54, two years later in 1972 at the early age of 19, knowing this was the new music of that time, he went on to open his own club, it was the first disco in the Bronx, called the Playhouse. This is where he started promoting his own shows by handing out flyers and selling tickets himself.
In 1976, his career took off when he and his dad opened the “DISCO FEVER.” The club, first catered to a 35 and over crowed, but Sal, having heard and seen kids in the streets of the South Bronx rapping over a DJ cutting records, knew he was about to see the next era of music. He needed the best DJ in the street, so he went from park to park and the only name that kept coming up was DJ “Grand Master Flash.” So in the summer of 1977 after convincing “Grand Master Flash” to play at the Fever, history was about to be made, Sal had successfully taken rap music off the streets and into a real venue where people could come and hear on a weekly basis. This innovative music trend was surprisingly not discovered in a studio, but between the walls of a small club in the South Bronx. By 1979 he had the biggest DJ’s in rap history playing at the club. Along with Flash he had Luv-Bug Starski, DJ Hollywood, Eddie Cheba, DJ Jun-Bug, Brucie Bee, Sweet Gee and Reggie Wells.

Great show! Sal, I grew up in the 70s in Jericho, Long Island, and my grandparents Phil and Ann Kaplowitz had a Jewelry store in the Bronx, “Cra-Mar” from the 1950s to 1980s on Pelham Pkwy & White Plains Rd. The Bronx and your music always influenced my life. Thank you!! fyi, I grew up with Paul Vance’s son Philip and was always around music at their house in Old Westbury. Paul wrote for example “Catch a Falling Star”, “It’s Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” and many others. I think you would know him thru the grapevine. Anyway Paul passed a few years ago, Phil 20 years ago, and this podcast has me reminiscing of old school days. Chazz, see you in WPB next Friday Feb 9! 🤗

Hello Chazz. No real interest in the HipHop to-night, but I am interested in the music industry for personal reasons. I became interested in your channel due to a notification that did not come from you directly; supremely liked you as an actor (basically everything you've placed forvvard, but had no idea you vvere so fascinating in your personal life). Sincerely yours, Portland, Oregon. p.s. vvhen I really 'grabbed on' to you and your abilities vvas vvhen you vvorked vvith Cher. That Part, hooked me. Not my taste in subject matter but boy, you handled that. XO.
