  • The atmospheric river that drenched British Columbia with record-breaking amounts of rain has also taken lives. Neetu Garcha reports on the people swept away and one community’s state of emergency.
There is still no clear winner from B.C.’s provincial election, as neither the NDP nor Conservatives were able to claim a majority, while recounts are also underway in some of the tightest ridings. Keith Baldrey looks at when a result will be known, and how long it could be before B.C. goes back to the polls.
The New Brunswick Liberal Party, led by Susan Holt, has claimed a decisive victory in that province's election and will form a majority government. Heidi Petracek has reaction from the Liberals' headquarters in Fredericton.
As MPs return to work in Ottawa, questions are swirling about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's future as leader of the federal Liberals.
Mackenzie Gray explains how Trudeau is about to face what could be the most serious challenge to his leadership and how many Liberals have reportedly signed a letter calling for his resignation.
Israel has launched airstrikes on branches of a financial institution allegedly linked to Hezbollah in the south of Beirut. Redmond Shannon reports on the attack's impact and how the U.S. is pushing for peace in the Middle East.
Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are focusing on swing states, where razor-thin margins could determine the outcome. Jackson Proskow looks at how the candidates are trying to reach undecided voters and the questions surrounding pro-Trump billionaire Elon Musk's strategy to get more people to vote.
Plus, until dying in an Arctic penal colony, Alexei Navalny was Russian President Vladimir Putin's most vocal critic. But even death cannot silence Navalny. Mike Armstrong explains how the late opposition leader's prison diaries now comprise his new memoir and how his widow Yulia Navalnaya is as undeterred as ever in her fight against Putin.

@@lazypig704The government doesn't keep the money from the carbon tax. The money is collected and returned as a rebate. The carbon tax rewards those who use less energy. For example, the mass transit user pays less carbon tax and the guy who drives a big truck pays more. Both get the same rebate. That seems both fair and reasonable.

Meteorologists and governments have been using the term “atmospheric river” more often in order to better communicate the impact of an incoming rainstorm. The ability to differentiate between a standard rainstorm and one that could devastate a region has become essential

"Atmospheric rivers are relatively long, narrow regions in the atmosphere - like rivers in the sky - that transport most of the water vapor outside of the tropics. While atmospheric rivers can vary greatly in size and strength, the average atmospheric river carries an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to the average flow of water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. When the atmospheric rivers make landfall, they often release this water vapor in the form of rain or snow." NOAA

Flash floods, average rate is 25 feet from original state. It's height above creek 25 to 30 feet. It's safer to build above this.

Build on low ground or near a river, ocean, lake and this is going to happen at somepoint. Nothing new about this. It may take 1 year or 200 but it's fate.
