I'd agree with you but the way they had Punk beat him wasn't crazy unrealistic - First of all, they showed Wardlow had Punk beat and was about to get the 3 count until MJF told him to stop the pin at 2 and keep powerbombing Punk - and it's not like Punk kipped up and hit him with a GTS for the win, he got a lucky roll up while Wardlow was being distracted by MJF again. It actually made sense and did what it needed to for Wardlow - dominating Punk all match did more for him than all the weeks of beating local jobber talent combined. When he turns on MJF he has potential to be a star or at least propel himself to the ME scene.

There were TWO options they could've went with that would've been better.
    1. MJF is pissed that Punk looks like he's going to beat the count, so he grabs a steel chair and hits Punk with it a few times.
    2. After the table spot, MJF yells at Wardlow to Powerbomb him again, but on the concrete. Wardlow throws Punk into the ring instead (the count is already at 8), but MJF gets in Wardlows face and yells at him, causing Wardlow to get counted out.

I know in title matches in WWE JR would say stuff like "The ref is giving some leeway because this is a title match" but in a normal TV match, it should always be a DQ, unless the ref doesnt see it.

    • @HappyRatKaiser
      @HappyRatKaiser 2 года назад +7

To add to that, if they cared about the rules they could frame this is such a way that it would make perfect sense for all involved:
-MJF tells Wardlow to powerbomb him on the concrete/through a table, whatever. The ref warns Wardlow he'll be disqualified if he does that. Wardlow decides--reasonably, since he's clearly winning the match--to throw him in the ring and pin him first. CM Punk turns the tables and wins. MJF blows a gasket at Wardlow for disobeying him (and losing, too!).
Rules make this kind of thing possible, but for whatever reason, AEW (and most modern wresting, let's be honest) don't seem to understand their value at all...

When Jim brought up the DiBiase piledrivers controversy I remember when Matt Jackson took a Canadian destroyer of a ladder through a table and 30 seconds later he was on his feet, And they could've cited that as the reason why the Bucks lost the ladder match because then it left Nick Jackson in a handicap situation also with an ambulance taking Matt to the hospital, but unfortunately it was a transitional spot...

People have told me I was wrong, but I stand by what I’ve been saying, this match buried all three guys. MJF is supposed to be the smartest heel in the company, he has lost because of Punk and wants to do the same to Punk. So instead of letting Wardlow pin him and give him a loss he has Wardlow dish out more punishment. That’s stupid when if this was real Punk would have lost and THEN they beat the crap out of Punk. Wardlow has just dominated the top face in the promotion, 8 powerbombs and a 9th through a table to your opponent, yet he’s able to roll you up and HOLD YOU, so Wardlow is weak enough to lose to a guy barely alive. CM Punk, your top babyface basically just jobbed to a 2nd tier heel, basically saying HE IS NOT MAIN EVENT OR WORLD TITLE MATERIAL. This was stupid idiotic booking.

I feel like this had all the right pieces to be a good segment. And while they may have succeeded in the long run, they also did far too much IMO. The powerbomb through the table seemed unnecessary but if you absolutely had to do it, do it after 2 or 3 powerbombs, not after he already taken 8 of them. Jim is absolutely right, there is no excuse for ANYONE to beat the count after suffering all that punishment (even with Aubrey's slowest count ever). It also felt weird after all of that for Wardlow to be able to go down to a simple small package; realistically Punk shouldn't have been able to do anything at that point. Or they could have cut out the table spot all together and just kept it all in the ring and still got the same finish, and it wouldn't have felt as excessive. I'm sure the intentions were good for this segment but it was a bit much IMO.

I understand they are trying to set up MJF and Wardlow in the future but this match was horribly booked. CM Punk took 8 Power-bombs, including one on the Table, then manages to come back from the Slowest 10 count in wrestling history. All so he could beat Wardlow with a Roll-up because Tiny Khan doesn't want to do a DQ finish. That match killed the momentum Wardlow had with an EVP-style booking. Then after all this they pretty much make Wardlow seem less important than Shawn Spears... AEW is showing more and more it's just all the worse parts of late WCW/ECW and TNA all rolled up in on. It also deserved the massive ratings plummet it got this week from Dynamite and Rampage.

NWA recently did a thing, though it happened after a tag match between Nick Aldis and Tim Storm vs. Chris Adonis and Tom Latimer. Aldis left the Strictly Business stable, but wanted to show there was no hard feeling between him and Latimer, so they shook hands and hugged, then Adonis hit Aldis and Storm with low blows. Latimer then hit Aldis with 4 piledrivers, the last in a steel chair. And Aldis sold it well, with convulsions, Mickie James came out to be with him, and the EMTs took him out on a stretcher. It would have been more believable if they had stabilized his neck first, but still...So that's another incident inspired by the Freebirds/DeBiase match. Some things just don't get old.

I'm surprised Cornette didn't rant on the ending, saying how unbelievable it was for Punk to all of a sudden pop up at the very end and no-sell with a quick rollup. And how the rollup made Wardlow's powerbombs look weak because apparently they weren't strong enough to keep Punk down, despite Punk receiving the MOST AMOUNT of powerbombs in a Wardlow match! Punk BURIED Wardlow and his powerbombs when you stop to think about it. Jim probably isn't ranting because of his favorable bias towards Punk, like how he used to be for Cody. Once he finally frees himself from the shackles of MJF, he'll be one of the top guys in that entire company for the foreseeable future.

Great stuff but since yesterday's Dynamite, I'm a little worried that the steam might by fading from the idea pool of "How many times can they meet before they go one on one?"
I would love for it to last until the Revolution PPV the first weekend in March, but, that's a long while yet to go and we already seem like we are at that point in the story where the match is gonna happen sooner rather than later between Punk and MJF, I hope they can prove me wrong, but it's really feeling like we'll get the match we've all been dying to see burnt off on a Dynamite, leaving Revolution with one less match to be desired

Wardlow should have taken a DQ loss for "excessive force", instead of that surprise roll-up for the finish. That way, Wardlow doesn't get accidentally buried in the process of performing these moves, and it makes Wardlow a more credible monster in the ring. That kind of a finish would also put over MJF as a hindrance to Wardlow, because it gets over the idea that MJF's Orders are interfering with Wardlow's ability to succeed in the ring.
Furthermore, nobody (especially at Punk's age) should be able to take 8 damned consecutive powerbombs and expect to get back up. That's just not believable...
...One or two should be enough to put the average enhancement talent out of commission for the match...
...Two to three (maybe), when spread out during the course of the match, should be enough to take down a well-respected veteran superstar, in order to set up the actual finish...
...But this finish right here? This is Looney Toons level of absurdity, because this finish takes the believability aspect of the match, and just throws it right out the window.
And Aubrey's intentional slow count didn't help matters either.
This was an easy 4 out of 5 match, that literally got dumped on its head, down to 2 out 5 (assuming I'm generous), just because of those elements alone. And as an AEW fan, that irritates me.

I mean...the funny thing is, there were a lotta fans online agreeing with Eddie Kingston during their mini-feud, that Punk didn't belong there and they didn't want him there and that he's just gonna bury everyone being "ex-WWE." Hell, people in this comment section are claiming a small packaged "buried" Wardlow here, while the entire reason it was booked this way was to SELL Wardlow, even in a loss. MJF was distracting him and barking out orders. The entire point of the segment was that Wardlow was more than Punk was expecting, he got demolished, but Wardlow would've won had MJF not been interfering.
My point is...Punk's MO as a performer has never been to be the guy who looks flawless, who always dominates in the ring and comes out of matches scot-free. Think back to when Punk was dealing with the Shield. Punk was telling Cabana on the AOW podcast about how management was telling Punk backstage "you gotta make Roman look really strong." Punk never had any issue with making an opponent or a rival look strong. The problem there was...Roman was being groomed as the next big top guy in WWE, and he could see the writing on the wall.
AEW is far too open-minded and broadly scoped to have Wardlow dominate the whole roster "just because." But in this moment, Wardlow needed to look dominant, but still have a chink in his armor.
It had some flaws in the execution, no doubt, but it still made sense.

I loved this segment on paper, but the point of it was to make Wardlow look strong, make MJF vs Punk needed even more, and make Wardlow even more upset with MJF. After 4 powerbombs, and Wardlow going for the pin, MJf should have stopped him, got in the ring, took his jacket off, and start beating Punk then putting him in The Salt of the Earth.
-You make wardlow look like a monster for completely, and cleanly, destroying Punk.
-You make MJF look like a slimmy little jerkoff for beating on Punk while he's basically helpless.
-You get Wardlow even more pissed at MJF because he cost Wardlow a win over a huge star, just because he wanted to beat on him.
What they did here was too much. Punk should have left in a stretcher with that amount of beating.
