@Velveteen Friday Hi mate. The video doesn't cover it, but you need to do some gain staging before the sounds hit the faders. If you drop down the 'mix' menu you can select pre-fader metering. The conventional wisdom is you want everything to be coming in at -18DB average, with the peaks hitting around -12b. This not only gives you a ton of headroom but means your plugins work at optimal level, with the faders zero'ed, which is where they work best. You can tame levels with the Utility plug in. Just have that first in your chain on each channel. BTW, I thought this was all snake oil until I tried it. Just google gain staging.

I would say it was great for beginners, although a beginner may ask things like “how do you know what your EQ changes will sound like before you’ve heard them” or “what does compression do?” - I appreciate its difficult to cover these as you go, but maybe touch on them, real briefly?

Hey Charles, I just started your mixing tutorial! I am clearly a beginner in that I've been recording my songs for only seven months now and for the five I'd been using GarageBand and your tutorials got me started. For the last two months I've graduated to Logic and I can't believe how exciting it is to learn how to go through the mixing process and how much is actually available in Logic Pro. I know this sounds corny but I'd be lost without your well articulated discussions. I've got a song with about 20 tracks so organizing the material has been essential. I'm only about 12 minutes in but with note taking and trying out what your sharing it has taken quite a bit of time. I'm looking forward to studying the rest of your tutorial. I can't thank you enough!

Thank you. Charles, I think that you did a good job mostly explainin' the whole process in a linear and ordered way. The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with is the compression regulation... I just saw that you tend to set the attack very fast (when not at its fastest possibility) especially on kick drums, and slower release. For what I understood and experienced so far, mostly with percussive sounds, it works better exactly the other way around: slow attack and fast release in order to not kill music dynamic and let wether the punch and the air at the same time. Sorry for my english, I'm Italian :) hope you got it and that it makes sense to you... Best regards!

Don't know if someone else might have addressed the issue of converting all midi and instrument tracks to audio. How important is that? Or is it a preference thing? And I know there are instances when you need to retain midi data, depending on what's on the track. Please address mixing in midi vs. bouncing everything to audio! Like so many of the others, I'm going to stick with watching your videos and stop going from one instructor to another. That's a sure fire way to never really get anywhere in this vast world of music production. Thanks for all you show us.

Okay...Great help. I used to fool with this stuff in my late 20's...I'm 60 now...I know...it sucks to be me. No fancy stuff here. But here are my two things making my hair more grey. I'm running my guitar into my Scarlett 2i2 with cable having one ring. Do I need the cable with 2 rings so the sound is stereo? Is that what I'm missing? The other thing is this. Do I have to mix to get the volume of my drums down or do I need to use the plug-ins, and move all the dots around until I get the volume satisfactory? The only thing with with is it can change the sound too - so I'm a bit lost. I may need a dummies book, but I'm picking up more of this with your videos then I ever thought possible so thanks for taking your personal time to create these videos.
