- Our Billy, who art in Glasgow, hallowed be thy casks…
Honestly, this whisky is so impressive, but if I have to spell Meikle Toir anymore, then I’m going to use the bottle as a blunt instrument to inflict some sort of retail driven revenge.
Billy Walker is God when it comes to sherry casks. There’s the best absolute sentence you’ll ever read in whisky. But this thing is a stunner of range and flavour. Peating a distillate to 35PPM, bottling it at 48% ABV, full maturation in what have to be the wettest sherry casks of all time, and with all the other good stuff - i’m just so blown away. But is it a surprise?
I never got to try his Glenallachie Future bottling because every annoying flipper in the whisky game sold it, and I refuse to pay secondary prices for anything to drink. But the way this whisky is structured just took me away to a different world. If you want something with deep sherry notes, and with any level of smoke to it at all, ignore anything from the following distilleries: Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Springbank (Yes, I said it) and Bunahabhain Moine, just ignore them and buy this. It is 5YO whisky for under £50 a bottle that just blows them out of the water and puts them into the stratosphere to never be heard from again.
You all might be thinking this is an odd thing to state, but I’m going with it. Развлечения
Sounds very exciting, I am going to look for a bottle! Thank you for the great review!
Just took delivery of two bottles, one for now and one for the future. Stunning whisky.
Darn it all to heck. Now I have to buy a bottle. As always a great video.
Same, Mark. Ended up buying two. One for now and one for later.
Thanks for the great review. I love Glenallachie and while not the biggest peat fan, I do like a sherried peated whisky. I've had a bottle of Kilchoman Sanaig before and really liked it, so I've just ordered this to try. 👍
You are gonna love this!
The Kilhoman Sanaig value comparison is valid here in California as well. Both are in the $70.00 range (give or take). I’m placing my order now. Thanks for the review. Cheers.
Yes! You won't regret it!
Nice review, Phil! I can tell that you did thoroughly enjoy the dram :)
I had the opportunity to taste the Sherry One and The Chinquapin One expressions and liked them both very much. Top quality stuff indeed. Which one I prefer is to be decided at a (semi) blind tasting for which I've saved a little of both drams.
In Bulgaria Meikle Toir is very reasonably priced too. Today a bottle of The Chinquapin One, The Sherry One or The Original will have me part with the equivalent of roughly 38 pounds, but back in January I managed to purchase (or steal rather) The Chinquapin One, The Sherry One and The Turbo (yes indeed :)) for roughly 32 pounds per bottle.
Cheers!
What a bargain! I paid £42 a bottle and feel like even that is still incredible value across the range.
I have them all except the turbo. And they are all very good imo👍🏻 great video
Couldn't agree more!
Glad you liked it Phil! This whole range is very very good! It's almost like Billy Walker knows what he's doing 😅
We're spoilt with Billy. Everything he does is great. But the Glendronach peated stuff he did I wasn't a fan of. So I was a little sceptical about these. I'm happy to be wrong.
I have only tried the Original and it's stunning for 5YO. And let's face it: Wee Beastie cannot even touch with a long pole.
Unfortunately our local distributor asks approx. 70 quid for any of Meikle Tor's line up, so I don't foresee big success in our market.
Wee Beastie has nothing on anything, such a strange product.
That price is quite a shame...could be worth waiting for the price to drop, or going halves with a friend?
I would pick this up in a heart beat given your thoughts. Crazy rating and hope I can find it. Cheers!
Hope it ends up your way soon!
Nice review, thanks Phil. Yet to appear in my market but fingers crossed. Meikle Tòir translates as "big pursuit", according to the distillery website.
Should've definitely checked that before filming the review.
Meikle Toir means “big pursuit”, according to the website for this whisky.
Not something I would have ever guessed.
You’re making it sound too good to be true. They’re going to want to raise the price now. 😅
Nooo, Billy Walker doesn't do price increases.
Thanks for review Phil! Would you also compare it to the Laphroaig PX Cask?
To a degree, yes. It doesn't have that super industrial Laphroaig thing, but it does get close. If you like sherry and peat then you'll really enjoy it.
This is available in Dublin for €63. I'll get it tomorrow!
Crack it open and tell me your thoughts.
Phil, these are finally showing up in Az usa…worth $80 a bottle in your opinion?
Absolutely!
Thanks for the review! Can’t wait to taste this and the rest of the series. These just hit the US shores and I was fortunate to get one of each. This particular one sounds right up my alley
Great review! Since you mentioned Lagg. Would you go for the one you mentioned or the inaugural sherry Lagg release? Thanks!
Corriecravie! Better value and more of everything!
Anyone know about US distribution?
All websites that have it listed just say 'coming soon'. Probably post-April launch.
Any chance of having a look at the Meikle Toir - the original at some point?
For sure! There's another bottle next week, but it isn't the original. I'll have it on here at some point.
