  • Despite being one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, Bladnoch has had a rather torrid past that most of us may be unaware of. Owned for much of its present life by Diageo, then partly owned by Diageo and some brothers who tried to make it independent, it is now in the hands of an Australian gentleman who has brought it back into the modern life of whisky.
All of the liquid is stored in these rather impressive and heavy decanters, no matter how much you spend, said liquid itself is something to be marvelled over, too. This particular example, The Vinaya, a Sanskrit word for ‘guide’, has brought Bladnoch into my life for the first time! I’ve been in this industry for a while and tried some single casks of the past, but nothing of their modern lineup in a whole bottle.
Matured in a combination of first fill bourbon and sherry casks, The Vinaya is a very chocolate forward style of lowland whisky that is quite different from what I had in my head when I purchased it. It isn’t the most complex whisky I’ve ever tried, but when it comes to first impressions, I don't think that complexity is something I look for. I feel as though this has given me an insight into Bladnoch’s house style, and if the rest are like this, then I can’t wait to delve deeper into the range! Cheers!

Good to hear more of their evolution. Scotch sounded good too! Interesting that the 1st fill Bourbon did not show up, or not significantly. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, that was a surprise. Still sweet, but not typical.

Nice one Phil! I quite like the modern Bladnoch style but I get a lot of lactic notes with it. When I attended an online tasting with the master distiller Dr. Nick Savage, I did mention this but he said he does not get nor aim for a lactic note! This is interesting to me as funnily all my friends in my whisky club get the same note and that's why some are not fans of Bladnoch. Maybe geography and heritage does affect what you taste. Maybe give the 2022 11 a shot as it's only matured in ex-bourbon barrels and could be a better representation of the distillate. Cheers 🥃

Lactic has been a weird focus word for me in whisky over the last week. How weird is that?
I don't get those notes, but so many bave recommended the 11YO. I'll have to get it!

Great review! I really like Bladnoch. Look for the all ex-bourbon ones like the 10 or some versions of the 11. I get a lot of cheese funk, white fruit and citrus. Cheers, Phil!

So many folks have mentioned 'funk' regarding the 11yo. It was on the lost before, but this is 5th or 6th recommendation.
I've tried some sherry stuff and wasn't a huge fan. Bourbon casks seems the way for me with this brand.

Recently had the rep sit down with me for tasting, and found Bladnoch has really decent bottlings. Quality is definitely up there, but I was a little shocked to hear they wanted to see their 11 year old on the shelf for 75 quid...

The older bottlings are quite expensive. It's the only thing putting me off

I bought a bottle of this last summer and it was a decent summer sipper but needed a fair amount of water to tame the rather hot arrival and bring out some lovely fruity flavors…..don’t know I would buy another bottle. I would like to try the 11 though.

I haven't found it hot, but I will add water to achieve those fruity notes! Regarding the 11YO, I want to try it as well. The concensus is a super fruity whisky!

I absolutely hated the 10, but thought this Vinaya was very good. A pleasant surprise.

Love some Bladnoch one I really enjoy is the Liora its like buttered popcorn and its done at 50abv really nice juice. The 11 is more funky fruits almost slighty off fruits but its different and worth trying. Haven't tried the Vinaya yet but I'm sure its nice.

Sold on the Liora. I've heard that about the 11yo, sounds up my street in all honesty.

Most Scotch single malts and blends in China are quite cheap. surprisingly, Bladnoch is an exception to that rule. I can pick up a Springbank 10 YO for a lower price.

Newbie question; if not a natural colour...what do they use to colour it then please?

    • @WhiskyWednesday
      @WhiskyWednesday  2 месяца назад +1

Great question! It's distillers caramel, typically E150a, b, c, there are a few different versions.

Shame about the heavy bottle. At scale thats a lot of waste to manufacturer/ship for no impact to tasting the juice inside 😓
But otoh it's less bad if it's kept as a decanter after - hopefully a long lasting cork!

Probably will keep it as a decanter or water bottle for the table for big family meals. It's a little touch of old school exuberance, but it does add a lot of cost to manufacture and shipping weight.
