  • Tips/tricks and things to consider before you start your webcomic. I hope you find this helpful!
    These thoughts are entirely my own, I don't speak for all creators in the slightest. There are bound to be other opinions and experiences. The following is simply my view based on what I've experienced as a webtoon creator.

    I have another tip for backgrounds:if your not good with detailed backgrounds (like me), make it like a colored scetch, be sure that there are no white spots there and blur it. If it's blurred, it looks really good, and people would still like it. I hope this helps someone.

    also leave off on a cliffhanger with those 3 first updates, i made the mistake of only updating once but it was on a cliffhanger, i had 20 readers hooked in a an hour or so if you update 3 times and leave off on a cliffhanger people will want to continue reading to know what happens :) just a tip, Love y’all good luck new webcomic creators!

    i'd say write out and finish the first season and then release it ep each week that way you'll never miss a deadline and you can start working on season 2 or work on something else whilst still doing drawings of your characters in different events like christmas ect, least thats my mind set

    As a Webtoon creator myself, I want to add a caveat to that “upload 3 chapters at the start” rule: don’t do that if you have no audience to begin with.
    While yes, uploading 3 chapters in the beginning will make people more likely to subscribe, it will ultimately hinder your chances on the Webtoon algorithm. Uploading 1 episode per week is recommended because it boosts your comic to the “new” section every week, which means new people can find your comic every time you update. If you upload multiple episodes at once, you end up removing that boost and limiting the amount of people who can find your comic. I would recommend starting with 1 episode per week instead of 3 episodes right off the bat because it will grant you better visibility in the long-run.

      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад +102

      I appreciate this viewpoint! I don't know much about the algorithm or how it impacts new creators. I guess this is one of those things people need to weigh and decide for themselves. I certainly didn't have an audience to begin with and starting with three chapters helped me (I think) but if there's a trick with the algorithm, that's also important to consider!

    • @CaravenesArt
      @CaravenesArt 3 года назад +59

      Using both the algorithm and the subscribe feature would be best. You can wait till you have enough buffer to upload. That way you upload 3 chapters at once for the subscribe button and you also update weekly.

    I recommend using the Sims 4 to help make sets for your comic if you can! Just sketch over your screenshot, then make it into your style! This has helped me a lot in learning how to make a scene.

  • @brodenmckinney8168
    @brodenmckinney8168 3 года назад +31

    For time savers. I thought up a good idea for environments. If you are drawing digitally, draw a basic floor plan (including the furniture, kinda like how architects/interior/exterior designers plan a room. you can use the transform/perspective tool to make it to where it looks like your in the room. from there you can use the floorplan to make it 3D and put in your furniture. this is good because your going to get the perspective right, right off the bat and that's one less thing to worry about. make sure to save that floor plan though, in case you end up going to that place often. this creates consistency which will save you a headache down the road.

    This is a tip for people like me who aren't too good with consistency and making deadlines
    Before you post your first episode, make sure you've already made a few episodes, so that if you ever forget or just can't be asked to draw anything, then you won't be stuck 1 day before the deadline trying to rush it. Also, when you're setting deadlines and episode release dates, make sure you will be able to follow it, because if you keep changing it, the readers will get tired of it and just assume you're never gonna finish the story.

    2 yr late but just wanna thank you, everything you said in the vid reflected on my mistake, the thing is I got too excited and just released a chapter in webtoon a year ago, I struggled in keeping up with the update due to lack of chapters to upload. Include that so many things happened, got depressed over some personal issues which worsen my interest in webtoon. But my passion for the story I wanted to share didn't disappear at the back of my mind, when everything felt okay again for me I deleted the old webtoon I have, basically gonna reboot it because as I took a break from webtoon I did tons of commissions that really enhanced my creative brain juice and not to mention, the amount of Commission deadlines that had my adrenaline running forced me to improve on my anatomy and speed in working, which I find would be very efficient if I were to continue again, like huge improvement, and also I learned how to photobash which would also help a lot with my story, Then it hits me... Time go back and continue what I loved so much, so rn I have like 30 chapters which I was planning to finish the first season haven't decided where I'm gonna cut the story for the first season yet so I'll just continue until I happen to be satisfied about the cut for the first season, already have one in mind but I have other tons of side story I want to include before I get that part, if ever I finish the first season I'll have 20 chapters ready for the second season In case I continue the series! Your tips helped a lot and it lessen my anxiety to continue you just earned a sub!

This may work for Webtoon Original cause they promote it so much, but when you‘re a canvas creator it doesnt pay off at all! Theres a mass load of updates from various artists and all your hard work and time you put into 3 Episodes are wasted. If you want subsribers, update more often instead of upload everything at once. Though I do still have a few questions.
    How much should actually go into my plan, like should i put every big-ish thing into it or just the major points?

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад +1

      These are great questions! When it comes to planning--I think it helps to have your major plot points pre determined. But not everything. Be open to change and growth and smaller sub plots coming through. You're going to be brainstorming constantly, and reader engagement will direct you down routes you hadn't considered. I definitely knew my major plot points, but so many new ideas have come forth that made the story 4 dimensional and so so much better. As for the dialogue-- Something that helped me was assigning key character traits. Things like "shy" or "sassy" or "short tempered" can help you determine how a character will react to different conversations. Or knowing important goals or morals of the character. And I highly suggest making your characters flawed. Perfect characters don't have room to grow and ca make your story flat. So be sure to give them something to improve upon :) Hope this helps!

    Hello, what do you mean by the phrase in 3:50 when you say move over to the originals tab? Is it possible for a canvas series to be acquired by webtoon as originals? Thank you very much.

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад +4

      Yes! Some series become so popular on canvas that the creators get offers from WEBTOON to become an originals creator. Not all originals start out this way, some creators are hired by WEBTOON upfront. And sometimes WEBTOON has reader voting to see which canvas series readers want to move to originals. I’m not sure how the votes pan out, there seem to be several series intended for originals that never got there or are really delayed. And of course the canvas creators have to sign some sort of contract with WEBTOON to move to originals (I’m assuming it’s similar to a contract with an agent or publishing house) and not everybody wants to agree to the terms and instead choose to remain on canvas.

    This video was very helpful but I do have a question? To upload a webcomic without ilustrations, the reason I ask this is because I can only replicate art and not even that well beside I dont have the digital equipment.

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  2 года назад

      Interesting question 🤔 Webtoon is a very visual platform so without illustrations I would suggest uploading your stories to another platform. If you like writing there are loads of places for that. Or you can seek out an artist friend for a partnership. There is one picture book called “the book with no pictures” and it sells very very well. So stories, even simple ones, without art is possible. But webtoon might not be the best place for it. Not sure though. Good luck!

    Question: how many pages should my chapters be? I had someone tell me three or four is good and then someone else told me ten. Does it matter?

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад +4

      Truly up to you! Fair warning: WEBTOON does had a length limit. My friend tries to stick to about 20 panels an episode, my most recent had 40 panels, and the most recent of lore Olympus has 90 panels. What I will say is readers enjoy longer chapters and do tend to comment or complain about chapter length. So longer is ideal but also much much harder to maintain.

      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад

      @@bzuku9554 It's a bit weird to explain. But because webtoon uses the scrolling format you have to upload a series of files together that connect top to bottom to make one continuous image. This is webtoon's format: "The image must be less than 800px wide and 1280px long. You can upload up to 20MB, 100 images in total. Each file can be up to 2MB. Only JPG, JPEG, PNG formats are allowed." My recent chapter has 47 files, that are placed one after another to make my chapter, and my chapter had 40 panels.

      You have to make you own panels and save them in the proper format. WEBTOON offers a series of short videos on how to do this so you can easily follow along!

    Do you have any tips for a webcomic that's episodic with 3-4 panels in each episode?

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  2 года назад

      Only 4 images an episode? I’d recommend you wait to upload until you have more images. My friend aims for 20 panels an episode, and from Webtoon’s perspective that’s still fairly short. Some creators have as many as 70 panels an episode or more. In this scenario you don’t need to post weekly. Aim for longer episodes and post when you are able. I think on average, readers prefer longer episodes even when there is a longer wait time between uploads. ✌️

      You can still make a webtoon! You just have to use a good scanner or camera and then use a computer to put them in the right format for the app. There are other artists who draw traditionally on there. And the week my computer died I posted a chapter I drew on paper.

    Whats a buffer..?

    • @isabelle.ranson
      @isabelle.ranson  3 года назад +1

      It's something a lot of webtoon creators do! By buffer I was referring to a chapter buffer: having multiple chapters ready to go weeks before you plan on uploading them. As an example, I'm about to start my third season of my comic, but I want to have several chapters complete before I launch my new season. I prefer doing it this way because I like uploading weekly and finishing a chapter a week can be very demanding especially if you have a job or are a student. You never know when something is going to happen that will demand more of your time such as moving house or final exams. And the readers appreciate the consistency as well. Having a buffer kept my uploads consistent even when my life was chaotic. It also allowed me more time to make changes/edit before I upload them to webtoon. And there have been several occasions where I was really glad the buffer was there because I had time to change something or add foreshadowing or an important plot device into an earlier chapter. Hope that clears things up a bit!

    yes I agree! change is not always good when it comes to Art and comics from it's original! Example just look at how many versions of superman there is! like pick one and go with that! and this whole multiverse crap now and days just makes the story lame and boring! nothing is ever real cause no one ever really dies! there should always be one timeline unless the story is all about that in discovery and only for that story. I mean seriously how many supermans do you really need to know about? just go to any super market ailed and read all the same exact can of tunas! your see that nothing changes maybe slightly the content inside! but it is still the same tuna! that is my frustration with DC and even Marvel and comics in general but they started this whole mess and how they keep skipping timelines which makes the characters lame and pointless! that makes for the worst stories ever told. it should be one timeline and not a zillion timelines! just pick one where that would be the original story! you go from start to finish that it! no extra side fillers like naruto total over kill, no extra crap that's not part of the original timeline make it brief, just no more extra bullsht to make your story seem longer than it is! just the original story in it's naked self!
    you got like a million simpsons episodes yet I have lost everything about what the simpsons are even all about? everyone is still the same as ever. Bart and Lisa still in elementary school! like WTF is going on here over 700 episode and everyone is still the same age? jesus freaking christ! all this bullsht has just got to stop!
