As usual very well explained. I had the issue of taking a long x-step causing my hips to turn early and messing everything up. What was a huge factor for solving that were the first few steps, keeping them really short as well and with that setting a lower tempo so that I wouldn't rush into the x-step too much.
Thanks, fellas. Another solid instructional video. I started working on a 5 step walk up after watching the last Patreon form review, so this is really helpful. I haven't been able to explain why, but for whatever reason I'm finding more consistency and throwing smoother with 5 steps vs an abbreviated 3. I started with the 3 step probably a year ago after watching a Lat64 video, telling myself I'd get that down then add the other 2 steps when I got comfortable with 3, but I never did haha. I have a bad habit of trying to think of like 8 different pieces of advice when throwing and my best guess is the extra x seconds I get from a 5 step walk up vs 3 step help to calm my mind a bit more before I get to the hit. Or not getting enough hip rotation with 3 steps. Need to record it.
Very good quideline for walk up, so far my best distances on open field have been somewhere around +80 metres on stand still and when even trying to take some steps it feels like everything just falls and i dont gain anything from it. Need to practise a bit more. Your other videos have been very informative aswell, especially one with those disco moves about boxes.
Great video as always. I've gained a lot from watching your videos because you explain things so clearly and btw risk management video is pure gold! One thing I want to ask you tho. I changed my run up style this spring because I wrecked my knees when I did too long of an x-step and turned around and kinda muscled the throw. Now I have good looking run up going sideways and smaller x-step. I noticed when I do max distance shot I kinda have to crow hop so I dont stumble on my feet but it tends to mess up my timing so I usually pull everything too right and hyzer. If I just walk up I get correct timing and almost everytime more distance even tho im going slower. Do you think I just have to work on everything going slow and try to build up to keep crow hop or should I try to Simon and just step further left to get more hip rotation and expect more power. Changing style is hard :D Thanks!
Changing style is tough. Eagle smashes without the hop so it is definitely possible and if that’s working well I wouldn’t change it just to change it. If you want to do it though, work up to it slowly. Nobody goes from fast and short to fast and long. It’s slow and short to fast and long
I’m definitely seeing improvement thanks to you guys. Now that I’m using my hips more, do you have and good warm up exercises or hip stretches you can share so my old hips don’t start to ache?
@@OverthrowDiscGolf thanks man. I’m so happy you guys are making this great content. I’d really love a tee pad / aim where you lie walk up video in the future. I was doing gap training today with putters and though I hit some, the misses were there when I was doing basically the same walk up. Thanks for the great videos. Please keep them coming
Great video. If possible in the future could you make a video to help throwing on the side of a hill, not just the uphill/downhill? I have an issue trying to throw flat when I’m on a slope, but the basket is on a different part of the hill that is flat. If that makes any sense to you lol. Thank you.
Here it is! I love those tennis guides for feet placement. I feel like it’s never been broken down like that before. Thank you for this. Also, looking pretty fresh there, josh.
I have the same dreaded too much turn back during x step. Been focusing on that but find everything else suffers as i'm thinking about my feet. Appreciate this vids a ton!! Can you point me to a video or something that discusses hand position with regards to the disc during the pull through the power pocket? I know you don't want it on the front of the disc which is really common, but I can only seem to find videos on various ways to grip the disc, but not focusing on where hand/wrist should be during pull through power pocket.
I have a question about the 2nd step. I find it easier for my second step to be perpendicular instead of 45degrees. is that cool or do you think that will mess with my timing or something?
Personally I would try to get it closer to the 45 to keep me from getting turned around too early and to model what most pros do. There could be exceptions to this though
In my walkup I just drop the first forward step, simply to just have a smaller walkup as this can be convenient on some tees. Is that OK, or does it make a difference to incorporate the first step going forward with right leg instead of just skipping that starting with the left leg 45 degrees angle?
I have practice all kinds of different step ups including this one for hours and days and still can't do it and probably never will. Might not be nessisory though considering I can throw 250 feet without doing any step ups
Think I got most of the important info from the video - but I still can`t figure out what the red circle at the end does? James Conrad`s first foot placement after release to stop him from stumbling? Greatings from Germany...
good video! but I disagree that you need those first 2 steps. The xstep is all thats is needed, especially for a beginner. I think adding those additional steps for a beginner makes it much harder. I believe Tristan Tanner does just an xstep unless he's trying to go really long. Just my thoughts, bro. Good Stuff!
Yep. I put in the description that it could be augmented or abbreviated depending on distance. Paul was the person that clued me in to the first step years ago.
So on the last step with your plant foot, does putting to much weight towards the heel cause pulling up and a loss of rotation from a more lateral move?
I wouldn’t say so. I think you’re going to have both the rotation and lateral move. You get in trouble when the lateral move is done in a way that brings your weight over the front leg.
I just discovered another breakthrough moment. The first step is always straight forward. After hearing that I immediately paused the video and tried it out without a disc. Wow! It was like getting that first step right it immediately set me up to get all of my momentum into the throw. Can't wait to try it out with a disk.
So I got 2 random questions. You obviously know exactly how to fix forms and know what to look for.. 1. How far can you throw? And 2. Do you believe with good tech anyone can hit 350-400 consistently? Thanks
I saw his comment on the backward "Moonwalk" step, and thought "that is funny good thing I don't do that" *watched Slow motion video of my form proceeds to pick up my jaw when I saw that I was stepping backwards.
So what exactly is your throwing line for the throw being demonstrated? You start facing perpindicular to the front of the tee pad and say you want to face your target. Before the x-step you've turned your hips/shoulders parallel to the target. When you make the x-step you slightly angle that foot back toward 7:30ish and then move parallel to the left with your plant foot in such a way that your hips/shoulders are now closed to the original target line, it looks like you're throwing to the left of your original starting line. Are you setting your release point in such a way that you're throwing slighlty to the right of the new hip/shoulder line you created with the x-step?
I start sideways, turn away from target and walk backwards and then pull the disc to my chest and then follow through. I don’t start forward find it’s not as accurate as staying on the line I start with. But need to work on falling into the shot as I’m pulling and releasing right as my plant foot hits and then follow though.
This is such a better explanation of what the x-step is than most videos out there. Now I can just share this video with my friends and beginners instead if trying to explain it myself.
Switched to this shortened and perpendicular x step. Now I can’t reach back very far (or it feels real late and I rush it). At least I’m not muscling it as much. Still got nose angle issues...!
what do you think is the issue if I consistently pull hyzers to the right (rhbh)? It feels like it might be a footwork thing, like how I'm aligning my feet in relation to my line
Great video! Thank you! i had lost my sidearm aim for a while. and today doing some field work discovered the lead step. Straight down the lines. Thanks again.
Total beginner here, started in September. I have watched…. So many hours of disc golf lessons since then. I watched three of your videos in the last day, and when I went to the local course today I shot my personal best score by 8 strokes, and threw tee shots nearly 50 ft longer on average. LIFE CHANGING advice dude, you’re a literal disc golf wizard
Man i lose distance when I do a walk up. My furthest throw stand still is about 104 meters. But with a run up i only get around 80-85 meters. Do you have any suggestions? And no i cant film myself my lens is cracked 😥 I love your videos one of the best instruction videos on RUclips
Probably getting turned around. But I think you know the solution. You’re gonna have to get some film. On your phone. On a friends phone. Make a new friend and use their phone. You might have to get creative but there is no replacement for seeing yourself on video.
Excellent video! Super well done. Any chance we can get a backhand tutorial akin to the forehand tutorial? You guys started my disc golf game off with a strong forehand but I keep waiting for your backhand series to bring mine up to speed!
Practicing all of these movements to engage my hips has left my right hip muscles pretty sore. I’m a primarily RHBH college aged person, so I’m not concerned but is this normal for a beginner or should I be generating rotational power from my back leg or left arm more
I'm guilty of being a wide X-stepper and guessing there is where I'm starting to loose control of my throwing angle. A huge thanks for bringing this up!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on a couple of points. 1) I get that the disc comes out at 10 o'clock, but I'm curious if you are extending at that point or if something else is causing the elbow to extend around that point. 2) the plant foot. I get the plant, but when I follow through, it is difficult for me to rotate on my heel (timing? flexibility?). I follow through forward with my weight over the leg, so I'm not sure how/when to lift the toes to rotate. Whenever I try on a golf swing, I just lose my balance. Seems just fine practice swinging, so curious on your thoughts.
1) The disc comes out because you accelerate it to 10:00 and straighten out the arm there. 2) hard to tell without video. Could be that your weight comes over the foot early and doesn’t let you rotate on your heel.
Could you give some more explanation on the release point being at 10 o’clock? I’ve heard and seen it, but I don’t understand how the disc goes from being released at 10 to go straight towards 12 o’clock? Do you just line up more to the right of your line (as a RHBH)? I definitely don’t think I am releasing the disc at 10 o’clock.
Honestly it’s a little bit of disc swinging around your pivot point after your hand gets to 10:00 and a little bit magic. You know how when you grip lock it and it goes way right if where you were aiming? That’s the right thing but late. You basically want to grip lock at 10:00
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Whoa, that makes so much sense! I have definitely had griplocks where they go way right but also farther than any of my other shots, lol! That brings up another question though, if I can hold onto the disc up until 12 o’clock in my throw right now, how do I get the disc to come out at 10. I’ve heard you shouldn’t really be releasing the disc, it should just fly out. Do I just adjust my grip pressure until it comes out on its own at 10? Thank you and sorry for all the questions!
@@dustinsquires3440 the reason it comes out at 12:00 currently is because you think it should. So you straighten your arm out at 12:00. So straighten your arm out at 10:00. Easier said than done. But you have to first understand that that’s where it needs to happen and then commit to the 10:00 release the same as you do with the 12:00
Excellent video, thanks! My question is, what is your advice on how and where to hold the disc at the beginning of the walk-up, even before that first right step? Should you maintain an even level at the same height as the power pocket from start to end of the throw, like on the box drill? I still struggle with dipping/air bouncing even though my footwork has improved. I am not rounding nearly as much now by reaching out to 7/8 o'clock on the reach back, but the nose angle tends to be variable.
Great question. Gonna record a video on this soon. The simplest thing to do is to start the disc in the power pocket exactly like you mentioned; so over the left pec with elbow high like the box drill.
Found this video the other day, absolutely incredible you guys have changed my game, the 5 step vs 3 step is working so much better. The little leap on the x is allowing me to do exactly what you said it would

This video changed my life.
No doubt the best video for foot works .
Congrats!
Man i lose distance when I do a walk up. My furthest throw stand still is about 104 meters. But with a run up i only get around 80-85 meters. Do you have any suggestions? And no i cant film myself my lens is cracked 😥
I love your videos one of the best instruction videos on RUclips
Probably getting turned around. But I think you know the solution. You’re gonna have to get some film. On your phone. On a friends phone. Make a new friend and use their phone. You might have to get creative but there is no replacement for seeing yourself on video.
Excellent video! Super well done. Any chance we can get a backhand tutorial akin to the forehand tutorial? You guys started my disc golf game off with a strong forehand but I keep waiting for your backhand series to bring mine up to speed!
We hope to someday. We’re working through our list of ideas but alas, time is our nemesis once again
Practicing all of these movements to engage my hips has left my right hip muscles pretty sore. I’m a primarily RHBH college aged person, so I’m not concerned but is this normal for a beginner or should I be generating rotational power from my back leg or left arm more
Probably more accurate to think about the left side generating it. But different images for different people. You could also be sore from overuse.
I'm guilty of being a wide X-stepper and guessing there is where I'm starting to loose control of my throwing angle. A huge thanks for bringing this up!
Don't worry, about 90% of disc golfers are.
After all of that moonwalking, I think you need some soup. 😊👍
Just finished recording it
I'd love to hear your thoughts on a couple of points.
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Thanks for the response :)
Great content. I appreciate it as I work on my form!
Absolutely
Now all’s we need is a soup video
Filming it today
@@OverthrowDiscGolf Thanks so much! Look forward to seeing that video. Keep the tips coming, you're an awesome coach.
@@tfowler88 absolutely brotha
Found this video the other day, absolutely incredible you guys have changed my game, the 5 step vs 3 step is working so much better. The little leap on the x is allowing me to do exactly what you said it would
Glad it is working out for you!
You guys are nuts, every tutorial is just spot on & clear. Good jobs guys.
Thanks Matt!
