my dad was a big woodworking self taught carpenter - I love to craft with real wood - thanks for this ! Gonna get my 40 year old son to help me with constructing these LOVE THEM!
Good project.... The problem you were having with the brad nails is they were following the grain of the wood. The brad nails are flat and are just a tad bit wider one way so they follow the grain of the wood. Had you turned your nailgun 90 degrees, the nails would not have come out the side like they did. But, it is always safer keeping the fingers and hands away when nailing like this anyways. Like the lanterns.....
What an awesome hubby you are. My husband these same skills but I can't melt him down and get him to do nothing. What good is a skill if you won't use them.?
That was happening to me quite a bit on some framing projects. I found that when I took the unnecessarily long brad nails out of gun and used shorter ones but that still went through both pieces it stopped happening 🤷🏻♀️ though I don’t know if that is why lol
Sorry I found a plan online for rustic wooden lanterns and modified it a bit to use scraps I had on hand. I did it on the fly. You may be able to find a simple plan by searching for rustic wooden lanterns.
I just got done making smaller versions of this and the SAME thing kept happening with the nail! I thought I was doing something wrong!! Is there anyway to fix this, i have people requesting some and im trying to raise money for a mission trip, after the 6 I made i was like, NO MORE! just because of the stupid nails! But the one request was from my boss so I feel like i need to make one more :/ but I am dreading the nail situations b/c he wants it stained instead of painting which you cant spackle stain.
I used wood filler. Try holding your nail gun perpendicular to the work piece. You'll notice I rotated my gun 90 degrees after it happened. My problem is that I dont pay attention how I'm shooting the nail and thats when I have problems. See tip 2 in this video to see what I mean: ruclips.net/video/wkoo4H3N5qw/видео.html&spfreload=10

- Beautifully quick ! ! ! Thanx 4 sharing.
Nice, simple project, but well described and demonstrated. Good, concise narrative.
Thanks. I've only done one other project like that, I think. I had to cut out a bunch of umm's and uh's, haha

Nice quick build Chris! Lucky you didn't tag a finger with those brad nails (saying that from experience :) ). Hate when that stuff goes sideways.
Turned out great!
Thanks!
nailing into endgrain causes that to happen a lot, the brad nails will follow the grain unless you have the gun dead flush.
Nice man, made a few lanterns not long ago. great fun
Nice, easy projects are fun, I think, because you get quick satisfaction.
Chris McDowell | CMR Woodworks oh for sure man!
do you have written instruction for making these? like the sizes you cut everything?
Here are the plans they are based on: jenwoodhouse.com/scrap-wood-challenge/
That looks nice
Thank you!

Also what did you use to fill the holes with? Was that spackle or wood filler?

we love knots - makes it look more rustic - I wouldve left them - but thats just me....
A wonderful lamp and a great inspiration. Many hi from Andy
what glue do I use ?
Just regular wood glue is what I used
Whatever happened to the good old drill and screws? I swear , every diy channel is in love with the nail guns these days.
The plans I followed called for the nail gun. I had one, so I used it.
Didn't realize French's yellow mustard was such a good glue for woodworking 😂😂
long as you don‘t mind the smell when it sours
what are the sizes to cut?
