I considered myself a decent DE player - quickswitch tactics et al - this level on Nightmare difficulty still kicked my ass for hours to the point where I just got frustrated and switched the difficulty setting to Ultra Violence just to finish the Slayer Gate, which I easily got on the first try. Then I see these chads on YT doing it on NM with the shotgun only, or in less than a minute... FUUUCCKKKKK!!!! So after playing this game for years now I keep realizing that I am still a noob.
Wow, the combat shotgun is such a versatile weapon. Standard fire can obliterate fodder, or, at sufficient distance, stagger them for the glory kill. Sticky bombs destroy weak points, and used against fodder clusters along with flame belch, gives you lots of armor. Full auto can soften/destroy heavies, and used along well timed grenade attacks to cause falters, delivers massive damage to super heavies. Mastery gives ammo back! I just beat UAC Atlantica in Nightmare difficulty by using only the combat shotgun. If you needed to play Doom Eternal with a single gun, this would be it. Although I don't know if it would be enough to face the Icon of Sin or Samur Makyr.

I went through all the levels using the infinite ammo and quad damage cheats for the lolz
