- North Korea has come up with a new way to bring cold hard cash into its isolated country: export North Korean workers to slave away in the Siberian forest (often without telling them they're no longer in North Korea). We set out to investigate these camps and almost landed ourselves in quite a bit of trouble.

@Dave haz They still are to an extent. Just some months ago they sent an undercover journalist to China after foreign journalists were banned to get some info on what it was like for Uighers (or however it's spelled)

@@tazoomturret377 the quality dropped. They are letting personal agendas showing through their reports. And instead of doing a good job of interviews, their questions are very choreographed not to question but to direct the conversation to fit with US's popular current narrative.

North Korea in the early 2000’s was a legitimately bad place to be for basically anyone. It was worse than Afghanistan or Iraq of the same time. The fact that Shane went during this time to North Korea and wasn’t assassinated once he got back is truly amazing. This man has balls of steel.

I love this documentary, there is so much personality put into it it's insane, now i do like some of the new ones being done, but i gotta admit, Vice has lost so much of their personality and just kinda feel like a normal news network with the exception that the reporters go and get shot at a couple times.
Channel 5 with Andrew Callahan is bringing that spirit back thankfully !

This is basically the best documentary regarding North Korea. I loved the field trip vibe of the entire documentary. It feels like I am taking a trip with Simon and Shane. Granted a it's a scary trip, but a trip nonetheless.

You've got to admit this is the best vice video there is. Being drunk smoking cigarettes and making friends with the funniest people there are. And a little bit history
Shane Smith is the living embodiment of what vice is suppose to be. I think as a smaller outlet they were more effective in being unique but with mainstream success vice is not what it was. These documentarys take you on an adventure which is cinematic with it's characters , music and feel. I hope Shane Smith gets back in the field more like how it was previously.

they were allowed to have point and shoot cameras (which they didnt know could do video) and snuck in higher storage card to support the footage

It's like the older the vice doc the better it is. You have to watch vice in reverse to enjoy it.

Worked in Russia back in the 90's. Oilfield work. Americans were thinking of investing in the Russian oilfields. Their currency was so worthless that they all stuck their coinage or kopeks onto ice sculptures.
Nice to see how far Simon has came since then.
There is something so great, extreme and humane about these types of documentaries/news clips. Not just Russian Lumber Camps. But all of these things that are forgotten or not on the radar: Cannibal warlords in Liberia, Moonshine brewing in Africa, Guerilla Gardeners in Atlanta, Vigilante Mobs in Johannesburg etc. etc. etc.
Colorful, and fascinating. Even the drunken Russian on the train was interesting!
