North Korea in the early 2000’s was a legitimately bad place to be for basically anyone. It was worse than Afghanistan or Iraq of the same time. The fact that Shane went during this time to North Korea and wasn’t assassinated once he got back is truly amazing. This man has balls of steel.
Shane Smith is the living embodiment of what vice is suppose to be. I think as a smaller outlet they were more effective in being unique but with mainstream success vice is not what it was. These documentarys take you on an adventure which is cinematic with it's characters , music and feel. I hope Shane Smith gets back in the field more like how it was previously.

This is basically the best documentary regarding North Korea. I loved the field trip vibe of the entire documentary. It feels like I am taking a trip with Simon and Shane. Granted a it's a scary trip, but a trip nonetheless.

But all of these things that are forgotten or not on the radar: Cannibal warlords in Liberia, Moonshine brewing in Africa, Guerilla Gardeners in Atlanta, Vigilante Mobs in Johannesburg etc. etc. etc. Colorful, and fascinating. Even the drunken Russian on the train was interesting!

They are called North Korean labor camps because they are inhabited by North Koreans, not because they are owned by North Korea. Russia owns the camps, and they give money to DPRK because DPRK sends laborers because DPRK is always short on resources. They use money from other countries to import resources to their own country.
