- Vice founder Shane Smith managed to get inside of North Korea after a year and half of trying and is witness to the craziness of this hermit nation. Crazy is actually kind of an understatement.
In part 1, Shane and company speak to North Korean refugees living in South Korea, contemplate bribing a consulate in China, an eventually make their way through the DMZ into the land of the Hermit Kingdom.

@shadowberetta it's classic divide and rule. In order to rebel you have to organise and cooperate with others. They make sure anyone in any position to rebel is kept isolated in distrust of their peers. You never know who you can trust and who will sell you out. You know...it really is depressing that some people on here are like, "North Korea is right about what they say about the US!" Or, "I'd rather live in North Korea than the US!" North Korea is one of the worst, if not THE worst country on the planet. Their people have no culture, no freedom, hardly any food and worst of all they are force fed propaganda every day. Want to know why it's better to live in the US than North Korea? You can very well leave whenever you want without being captured or killed. Come on people, THINK!
I have to agree except for the fact that they do have culture, even if it probably isn't as exercised as in other countries
I love when Americans people say freedom :) I am always wondering if it's serious or ironic.
Pauline Dusolle Compared to North Korea, we are much better in that department. If you don't believe me, live here for two weeks then go there for two weeks. You'll notice a drastic difference.
Bacon Maken
I am not saying that living in North Korea is better, oh no! I'd rather live in the US than in North Korea that's for sure, I would not even hesitate for a second.
But freedom is only an illusion, in the US or elsewhere, but it just seems that Americans who live in one of the most corrupted country think they have more freedom than in every country in the world. And this is where I wonder how can people be so naive...
Pauline Dusolle I don't think we have total freedom either. Gays aren't given rights, middle eastern people are hated and white males are still more favorable. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's one of the most corrupt countries. Maybe one of the most corrupt first world countries.

Genuinely felt tearful at everyone's favorite tea girl. Truly depressing images from inside this country.
It hopefully serves as a thoughtful reminder that no one holds contempt for the North Korean people; they are prisoners within their borders. The regime is detestable and must end.
The fact he thought the Tea lady was just trying to manipulate him really made that scene hard to watch. I know he might not have wanted to get her in trouble but he barely even said bye even knowing she would go back to isolation and monotony
