I feel so sorry for those guards and tour guides, you realized what their superiors will say when they realize their tourists just made a fricking documentary showcasing the vanity of it all
arriba arriba andale andale
They were being fairly nice considering their whole family could be imprisoned
In another documentary, from one moment to another, the tour guide ‘disappeared’ and was replaced with a new, stricter tour guide. Interacting with foreigners is one of the riskiest things to do, living in NK, as before you know it, you’ll be in a re-education facility. These things are no joke, which is why tour guides get so pissed off if you don’t follow the rules. It’s their ass and their family’s ass that’s on the line.
He said ‘that guard hates us’ when honestly the guard likely feared them or potentially would grow to hate them for what they did to him and his family by their nonchalant actions
@@johnkirk1772 Yeah, I caught that too. Everyone's praising this dude for being "ballsy," but these people are prisoners in their own country. If they're convicted of any crime (or allowing a crime to be committed) then their entire family will be imprisoned... for 3 generations.
I really disliked this unprofessional dude bro, his whiny "documentary," and this guys dismissive disregard for his caretakers safety. Film what you're allowed to film, come home safely, and add your commentary during the editing process. Simple, and no one is punished/imprisoned/killed for it.

17:08 I think we all need to acknowledge the fact that this man going to North Korea and singing a Sex Pistols song on a karaoke system, specifically in _North fucking Korea,_ might be hands down the single biggest power move in all of human history.

I think you forgot of Laibach
This is the best RUclips comment I’ve ever seen
Whar song is it?
texasball45 anarchy in the UK
It blows my mind that "Anarchy In The UK" somehow made it into North Korea via a Kareoke machine. An anthem of defiance to authority figures snuck right in under their very noses.
The irony! What that country needs is a groundswell of individualist opinion through music that defies the norm, much like Johnny & co did in '76. Sadly, it doesn't look imminent!
PurpleTT99 I’ve heard that usb flash drives that are loaded with western music and movies are a hot commodity on the black market in NK. 😎
Never heard of this song in Germany.
It's an anthem against CAPITALIST authority. I'm sure they approve.
They probably see it as defiance of the evil capitalist British government, so of course they'd eat it up.
This man really pushed the limits during the karaoke session
Big FOCK u to North Korea
Yeah the word anarchy would set off red flags
Absolutely everything is chorographed, from walking, to clapping, crying, its insanity at its best.
TRUMAN SHOW
You’re insane
Tea girl is the saddest person I’ve ever seen. Imagine waiting a year to see another person, for like half an hour.
Where she at
She was cute! Poor girl, I’d stick around longer just to keep her company. Lonely waiting for someone to talk to
@@bigponce2107 It seemed like he had already stayed with her longer than the guards wanted, from how he left -- I think he had the same idea as you.

+Connor Lockett Awwwww little tea house! hehe so cute...
Having a "subject matter expert" in a library is actually an interesting idea, I kinda like it. Imagine going to the library of congress looking for an obscure topic on the civil war or something and having an expert there to point you to the right books, or even or explaining the subject like a professor. Search engines aren't very good at explaining niche things like that.
I started to work at a public library not long and the woman who's in charge of it highly encourages me to spend time reading and getting to know the collection there during working hours with not so much work
They would give the correct answer immediately
it’s called a librarian usually
The Human Library in Copenhagen is something like this!
it's 2023, AI enters the chat
Ok but that performance toward the end was extremely impressive. Wow, I'm kind of in awe and legit would pay money to see it done live myself.

Coming back to this after 10 years and it’s still incredible to watch. After seeing those desks, now I know why ikea didn’t even dare to go into North Korea. They knew their stuff isn’t even close to the desks in the DPRK

*Unholy screams come from the underworld*
I’m still confused how they hid the camera
Didn't need to its a press tour
They don't need to hide the camera when everything they see has been planted there
This entire trip was choreographed this is what they wanted you to see, the real North Korea is much much worse.
Seeing that woman wave at them as they leave is one of the saddest parts of this documentary. This whole thing is just depressing.
Agreed...that poor woman...
The Tea girl was still alive as of 2014.
JR9979 How do you know? I would visit NK hoping to find her and spend all day playing pool with her.
I saw a picture of her on Koryo tours website, it was date stamped 2014.
North Korea is completely isolated, its people are brainwashed, and social life is odd, awkward and, as you said, depressing. Just imagine what the country would be like if their leaders willingly stepped down and Westernized the whole country.
They love the echo effect, don’t they?
so did we, 50 years ago
Isn't that cause they're using really old analog sound systems
That's reverb to 11
It's all like always a shoegaze album playing on
Korean karaoke places in the US are the same way for some reason.
The show is so beautiful and breathtaking, but in such a dark and uncomfortable way
That Arirang thing is highly symbolic: the State doesn't even treat you like a number - they treat you like a pixel
18:20 - "when I'm finished they look at me like I'm crazy. Then I realize 'they don't have punk rock at all!'"
Right.... *that's* why they look at you like you're crazy

Textbook definition of awkward.
The Professors give them the RIGHT answer immediately? Correct answer in philosophy? mmmmhkay
that is because they lead the country under one philosophy, so they will give you right answers in communism, they probably never heard about any other philosophy
@@terka805 Specifically, they'll give you the "right" answers in Juche, which is derived from Marxism-Leninism.
Then they put your name down in a book.

Wow, I’m coming to this a decade late but this was some incredible journalism. Nothing was real here. He pulled back layer after layer of this choreographed performance they put on, yet we still never quite reached the true North Korean experience.
It was interesting to see that the people of North Korea were not all that different from the rest of the world, only living in an antiquated society. Strangely, I don’t feel sad for them. I still wish they could experience the culture and technology outside their country.

Vice 2019: This security guard was fired because he farted too much. Let’s do a video on it.
It's actually astonishing how far they've fallen in some regards. The whole reason I fell in love with their content was because of shit like this.
Right. I miss old vice.
I keep seeing this comment under every single one of their “old” videos and yet under almost every new one it says “yeah finally the old vice again”. Maybe it’s just that if you made only videos about NK for 10 years that would get pretty old pretty fast too?
You make it seem like they don’t do any good stuff at all, which would be quite the exaggeration
It’s just liberal, weed, sex , and gae now
North Korean Guard: "Abbey Road...I understand those bastards now."
Definitely my favorite quote in the series! 2:34
They looked at him like he was nuts during his karaoke. It is crazy to think that they dont really have cultural references for rock and jazz and all of that, actually never thought about that. Just crazy

lol yeah he was like out of frame at that point
Yea he wasn't even blocking the damn painting. So overreactive. They were obviously very nervous and awkward at that point.
Krispy Kwangsoo nice profile picture btw...
Maybe, but I think the biggest problem was that he had his back to Glorious Leader. That's a huge sign of disrespect.
People have been arrested for taking pictures where the ‘grand leader’ wasn’t in the middle of it. It feels like a joke, but in a country where looking in the wrong direction can get you years of forced labour, you quickly lose your sense of fun, I reckon.
Not going to lie, after watching all three parts of this documentary, this really makes me want to visit North Career.

They wanted to speak with him about this documentary. funny thing is... there is no North Korean embassy in the US. the people at the office quickly called Shane and told him to not come into work. Even though it looks like the kids are having "fun" in the performance i can kinda not imagine what happens after the show
Trust me, as an amateur musician(drums/percussion to be specific), those faces are not happy with their situation and look extremely forced. Especially the drummer in the school performance, no drummer makes that face unless they are in the marching band due to their parents making them be in it or under duress. Truly heartbreaking that all that talent exhibited by those kids is exploited by the state.
The quote: “They see me as a yankee imperialist aggressor, while I see them as the land that time forgot.” is truly beautiful. And Sex Pistols, holy crap, they smuggled themselves into NK is an impossible feat. True GOATS, but seriously, to those who got into NK and got this footage out is a massive achievement.
