- This is the rescue mission carried out to save a young orangutan illegally kept tied up as a family pet. The five-year-old primate, named Kurkur by his captor, was bound up in a hut in West Borneo when wildlife charities rescued him. Kurkur was discovered by the non-profit International Animal Rescue (IAR) being kept as an illegal pet.

I spent two years in Borneo as a PhD student doing my dissertation on Crab-Eating or Long-Tailed Macaque & the pig-tailed Macaques behavior and after talking with a lot of the local people, they didn't know the types of foods Orangutan eat or what the Macaque eat. They (the Orangutan or Persons Of The Forest) look like human so they must eat human food and that is simply not so. There are over 300 different types of fruits Orangutans need to survive. Not Noodle or coffee or rice or junk food. A single Orangutan needs 3 to 4 square miles to thrive NOT A 3 X 5 = 15SF hut! That is a prison sentence. A baby orangutan will stay with it's mother and nurse from it's mother up to 6 to 8 years. This baby is still nursing age so it's missing a lot of nutrients from its mom hence the loss of hair

They have 50 kids in every shanty, look how they live! The lucky kids merely go hungry and wear ratty clothes, the unlucky kids are sold at age 7 by their own parents into sex tourism!!
Look up r and K selection reproduction. It explainswhy their parents don’t care, explains why I don’t care that their parents don’t care, and hopefully it will open your eyes to why YOU shouldn’t care. At the least it will reveal to you why doing anything “for the children” in certain populations is a waste of resources all around.

Respectfully, what consequences are handed down to the man who KEPT an endangered species as a pet?? And didn’t have the DECENCY, COMPASSION, or RESPECT for this helpless creature!! He probably treats his dog better!! If it were up to me, I would hog tie the bastard then lock him in a box or crate where he can’t stand up, move around, stretch his limbs, and feed him slop everyday! If he doesn’t like it, too damn bad!! There wouldn’t be anyone coming to save his sorry ass!! No family, nothing. Sit in the crate day after day!! There MUST be consequences for his behavior and actions!! Without punishment, nothing will change. They will continue to likely murder the moms, steal the babies with the intent to sell them via the illegal pet trade. Once the baby is sold, they start the process all over again!!

I've never been able to understand how people living in Borneo lack the knowledge of what and orangutan eats
or that they steal these babies from their mothers and all the burning of the rainforest.

Most of these garbage people don’t get arrested for abusing these kind beautiful animals. They seem to all get off without punishment. It’s no wonder they’re not scared to steal an animal and hold it captive all while mentally and physically abusing it. This is so sick and twisted, These countries and their laws make me appreciate where I live. It’s hard to digest. They need punishment in place for criminals like this. Ok but like.... that was just some random farmer who ALSO LIVED IN THE HUT and like prolly didn't go to college. Fed Monky food from his own table.... and basically treated it like a dog. when the scientists came and said "hey, that's not how monkeys are supposed to live, can we take him?"
He was like, "Yeah!"
Don't villanize these people as animal abusers. Taking care of a baby Monky is HARD. It takes some real know-how. How was he supposed to know not to just treat it like a dog? It sounds terrible to us, but we're the kind of people who watch RUclips videos of monkey rescues. In this particular case I say the farmer was poor and ignorant, but not abusive.
Orangutans aren't monkeys.They're illegal to own as pets because they're usually ripped from their mother's arms while she's dying at the hands of the person taking the baby. It's not unethical that he kept him in his hut because huts are bad, it's because they're supposed to live in the trees. Now they have to teach him to not go on the ground and to avoid humans or he will be eaten by a predator or caught by poachers again. Also they can die from being fed human food, because they aren't a human, so he also needs to learn how to forage and what to forage. So yeah the guy didn't know what he was doing and had no "real know-how." Rehabilitation and release back to the wild is the best option. Don't blame the people who have the solution while defending the guy who is part of the problem. Orangutans aren't instinctual like low level animals, it takes 9+ years to teach them everything they need to know to survive.
How much worse you assume they are idiots. It's well known that it's illegal to have them as pets and as they actually live there, they know more than most that this is not how these animals are meant to live or eat. This is not ignorance.
