I should have mentioned this in the video, but here is the history on how the Alabama Hills got their name. The Alabama Hills were named for CSS Alabama. When news of the Confederate warship's exploits reached prospectors in California sympathetic to the American Civil War Confederates, they named many mining claims after the ship, and the name came to be applied to the entire range. When the Alabama was finally sunk off the coast of Normandy by the USS Kearsarge in 1864, prospectors sympathetic to the North named a mining district, a mountain pass, a mountain peak, and a town after the Kearsarge.
I never realized California was so beautiful until I started watching your videos! I just love your positive attitude! Thank you for making such awesome videos!!!
Hi Loran! I'm just returning from a 6 day backpacking trip in Glacier National Park. My apologies for the delayed response. The good news is, you can look forward to that video in the near future. California is an amazing, diverse and beautiful state. We pretty much have a bit of everything here. I am so glad you are enjoying my videos. Thank YOU for watching and for your positive feedback.
Great location....and sweet video! I've hiked in the area before, but did not make Mobius Arch..didn't realize how big it was until you stood inside it!
Very unique area, especially with the Mt. Whitney range in the background! Drove through there in 1996 and wanted to do some hiking, but I was with a friend and just didn't have the time. Always enjoy your videos.
Thank you Bryan! I hope you can explore it someday. I just love it. I see you have a new video up! Excited to check it out shortly here. :) Thanks as always for watching.
Another awesome hike Catherine, I hope your day work includes nature film and photo shots, you see and feel the beauty in what we all have been blessed with. It's certainly more than just a hike. As always stay safe and God Bless...
Glad you enjoyed seeing it Chris. Not too far a drive from Yosemite. I think you said you are going to Death Valley? This is on the way if you come out the east side of Yosemite. Right off hwy 395, so super quick and easy to stop there.
I saw the title Alabama and I was like, what she came to Alabama and didn't get with me. haha, Great video Catherine. Sorry for the late comment I've been on a small vacation.
Thank you and no worries! I was following your vacay on Instagram so I knew you were out of the loop. Good on ya for just taking a break. Here's how the hills got their name. I should have said so in the video: The Alabama Hills were named for CSS Alabama.
Beautiful & beautifully done! We camped there in March - cold but just amazing. I did this hike - the trail was very close to our campsite - in fact I could see our trailer from the trail! And I could see it over your shoulder when you were talking about the PCT hikers.
Wow Catherine, that was a gorgeous video. That Sierra backdrop was breathtaking. I can only imagine being at that camping spot and waking up to that view out of the tent door. Also, a great job editing I might add! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Bob! I appreciate you watching and the kind feedback. One of the advantages of hiking alone is I can take my time and set up shots without worrying I'm holding someone up. haha I'm already trying to figure out a time I can get up there to camp. :)
Wow, great views! I'm very glad you posted this. You had wonderful "plan B". Using The Möbius Arch as a frame was very nice too. I hope you keep getting time to hike Catherine.
Wow!.....this place looks a lot different then the Alabama hills I am familiar with that I usually visit every fall just north of my home in Florida lol!!!........beautiful place!.....I heard that there is usually snow in the Mammoth Lakes area even in the middle of summer!.....flipping stunning place!......the Mobius Arch is a famous camera shot place I have seen lots of photos of Mobius with the Mt. in the background...very unique landscape and awesome wildflowers too!...that is some "good medicine" for sure!
Hahaa! People always think I'm in Alabama when I say Alabama Hills. lol There is always some snow that hangs around the Mammoth area. Usually, just small glaciers and patches, but this year, it may be a whole lot more. It is so stunning. Yes, the Mobius Arch is pretty famous. I really enjoyed my time there amongst the wildflowers. It was indeed "Good medicine". Thank you Mike!
Glad you went to the Alabama Hills. I discovered it quite by accident a few years ago when I was in the area for a day hike up Whitney. I checked out the first few miles of trail to Lone Pine Lake the day before and decided to do some exploring in the Alabama Hills as well. Getting away from the marked trails and scrambling up those rock formations is pretty fun too.
Just saw that I hadn't responded to this. I passed it so many time going up to the Sierra until a friend told mw about it. Now, I try to stop on every trip.
Great video, and I love the music selections as well. I'll be visiting The Alabama Hills in two weeks. I'm really looking forward to this unique landscape. I've watched quite a few of your videos and you do an awesome job! :) Cheers from Chicago!
Absolutely beautiful! I really enjoy watching your videos and tagging along on your adventures. You do a terrific job with your filming and narrating! Its really nice to be able to see the amazing landscapes that are across the way from me. Im a New Englander and do the majority of my hiking on the east coast. I to am a photo person so I appreciate the extra efforts you put into your pictures and video. Keep up the good work and have fun out there! Joe from CT.
Thanks so much for the kind feedback and for noticing my efforts. It's very much appreciated. That's one of the magical things about the hiker related RUclips channels...we can experience other areas we may not otherwise experience. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Joe!
You are very welcome 😊 if you are interested I have a handful of hiking videos on my RUclips channel mostly east coast related 👍 have fun out there and look forward to your future adventures
Wow, still amazing. I re-watched this video today now that I hiked the Alabama hills on Thanksgiving with the snow on whitney. Just amazing. I will be hiking the JMT this summer. So I will be down for some practice hikes. Cottonwood and Army pass to Mt. Langely. Just cant wait Thanks for your video work, lots of extra steps to do it, but the results are worth it. Waiting for your Fish Camp video.
Beautiful "Plan B". I put a visit to the Alabama Hills on my bucket list last year after visiting the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine. Great museum to visit for Western film buffs and very accommodating if you wish to leave your car there for a JMT hike. Yes, I also wonder how many PCT thru-hikers approaching Kennedy Meadows may choose to skip the Sierra's because of the snowpack..
I visited the Museum on a previous trip and found it very interesting. I even watched the short film about the area in it's small theatre. That is how I first learned how to get to this arch.
Great job Cat. I lost count how many times you must've doubled back on the trail to capture yourself hiking. Nice work. 😊👍🏼 Let me know if you need a videographer with hiking boots. 😉 I have a friend doing PCT now. Hoping to rendezvous with him soon with my 4x4 truck camper. Let's connect soon...While I'm still in San Clemente. 😊
Thank you Steven. It was actually good for me to double back on this one since it was a short hike. It added to my mileage. haha. I appreciate you watching.
Man, you're making me long for the Sierras. 2018 is the goal! Next year is booked already but I'm getting excited to see your mountains. That arch was really neat too. Cheers Catherine.
GORGEOUS! OUTSTANDING BEAUTY! GORGEOUS VIEWS & VIDEOS! HOPEFULLY HOMEMADE WANDERLUST & FRIENDS ARE IN A SAFE PLACE SINCE THEY ARE DOING THE PTC? BE SAFE! HAVE FUN! SMILE! GOD BLESS YOU ALL ALWAYS! ENJOYED!
Nice video! I'm headed that way in the 1st couple of weeks in June and staying a few days at the Motel 6 in Mammoth Lakes. Do you know if the wildflowers will still be in bloom? And now after watching this, I'll be stopping at Lone Pine as well. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Will. It's tough to say what the wildflowers will be like in June. They are experiencing a long winter up there, so your timing might be just right. In the Sierras, there are usually wildflowers throughout the summer. Thanks for watching!
There are 3 real lost Gold Mines somewhere in the Alabama Hills, all in quartz formations. At the end of this video of yours with the Lizard on the rocks, one of the rocks is "QUARTZ".....Also in Documented Reports Petroglyphs of Ships and archaic writing in Iberian Punic have been discovered there and is in Gloria Farley's Book "In Plain Sight" as well as in my book "THE RETURN OF THE GIANT SERPENT". Some very ancient Geoglyphs as well are located there. I commend you and others of your adventures into our great American heritage of the American Outdoors and being independent enough to transverse alone. But there are dangers out there whether your alone or not, do not overlook them. I usually explore by myself too, but sometimes a friend or two is also welcomed. I'm in my senior years now, I'm 68, whether by myself or with a friend, I always carry a sidearm or at least have one available in camp. I like your adventures so much, I'm subscribing and looking forward for more of your adventures
Thank you for subscribing and for all the information. It appears I still have a lot more to explore in this amazing area. I appreciate you taking the time to watch.

I so enjoyed your walking tour, Catherine. I could almost breathe that mountain air!
I never realized California was so beautiful until I started watching your videos! I just love your positive attitude! Thank you for making such awesome videos!!!

Thank you Chris. I was thinking without a reference for scale...it is tough to guess at the size of the arch.
Next time I go down that way ...I'd like to visit the arch. I thought it was pretty tiny! ( but it's not! )
Very unique area, especially with the Mt. Whitney range in the background! Drove through there in 1996 and wanted to do some hiking, but I was with a friend and just didn't have the time. Always enjoy your videos.

Thank you so much. I'm glad I can evoke a feeling with my videos. I appreciate you watching.
You have so many beautiful hiking place's in your area. Thank you!
Thank you Roger. California is a HUGE state and most definitely diverse. I do love it.
I have stayed in Southern Cal. a lot.
Let me know if you make it back here!
Very well done. I like your style of shooting. Your video made my day before having to going to work.
Really glad you enjoyed it and it was a good kick-off to your day. Thank you!
The contrast in the foreground and the background is amazing. Great looking arch as well. Another incredible spot Catherine thanks for sharing

Great bit of history. I never knew any of that. I'm really starting to get into this civil war thing ever since I got the civil war bullets.
No doubt you are blessed and thank you for sharing the blessings with us. Watching your videos makes for a pleasant day.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
Very cool! Mother Nature at her finest!
Indeed Greg. Thank you for watching.
Awesomeness indeed, such a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing this with us Catherine.
Thanks for watching Dan!

You are lucky! I just love it there. Congrats!
Thanks. What other trails do you recommend and what time of year were you there? I imagine it's hot come summer.
I got snowed on last Sunday too. Ridiculous! Completely amazing scenery there.
I love it up there!
A Breath of Fresh Air.....
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching.
I did this two years ago. Went up to bristle cone Surprised how beautiful that side of the sierras is
