Me and some dudes ran this in 7 hours back in high school. After nearly winning state for XC. Now we can’t even run a mile and have dad bods lmao. I miss my fit days.
That was HIGH RISK...add to your kit a SOL reflective bivvy (4.5 oz) and whistle...even in summer you can die of hypothermia at that altitude after breaking an ankle esp if a search party has to find you because you left your InReach behind!
I know, riskyyyy, trust me, I was thinking about it! 😬 I did have a whistle and an emergency space blanket, but that InReach is a must for adventures like this! 👌🏽
You are a remarkable woman. Just a few suggestions if I may: 1). Start at 4:00 AM in August so you have plenty of light and minimum ice on the dangerous downhill stretch. 2). Have a friend walk up ahead of you carrying tent, warm clothes and sleeping bag for emergency. 3) get a good Fenix 1200 lumen headlamp for the dark part of the ascent. You can dump it with your spotter at trail camp. I think you have what it takes to win this thing. Do it!
Solid tips! There was A LOT I could’ve done smarter, using my Garmin InReach for one… but sometimes the spontaneity is part of the fun! (As long as the appropriate training/trail wisdom/precautions are there, wouldn’t advise for everyone. 🙃)
Thank you! Your comment inspired me to rewatch this after not having done so since posting it-- it is refreshing to see I was breathing that loud then 😹 gosh that was an epic run! Mt. Whitney is incredible.
What an amazing run and effort! Seriously, would love to run this one day! Beautiful views at 14.5k ft. elevation. BTW, I just got a 2nd pair of the TERREX Speed Cross trail shoes. My favorite! I'll be using them for my ultra races in 2023.
Awww I love watching the marmots! They’re adorable. I’ve had slower/soaking in the sun moments on Whitney too. Hiked it with friends the first time and we took an amazing nap by the little creek meadow area. At which point my friend decided marmots are her spirit animal lol 😹
I've hiked that route. And. I am...incredulous! What an amazing feat, regardless of time and FKT. Just phenomenal. Note to self: Don't challenge Shelby to a mountain running contest. EVER. 😉🤣
Update: ran a 6:38 on it 7/21/22! Getting closer to that FKT! Turns out navigating the boulder fields and general technical downhill running needs a little work. Also had zero acclimatization and took the climb steady… WE’LL GET THERE!!! 😝💪🏽💪🏽 (definitely not excuses, just analyzing the effort!)
I failed the first time I climbed. Didn’t acclimate. Didn’t bring dry clothes, got altitude sickness and hypothermia. The 2nd time I acclimated at cottonwood lakes and took ginkgo biloba. I made it my second time! Most people fail on the first don’t give up!
That’s amazing! My 63-year-old mother could not FATHOM this route when I sent her the video. Some people I think just have adventure in their blood and man do I hope to be continuing to move through beautiful landscapes like Whitney at whatever pace it takes when I grow up! Kudos!
My average time is 16 hrs. including 1 hr rest at Trail Camp, and 45 minutes rest on the summit. 4 summits (1 Mountaineer's Rt.) between 49 - 55 yrs. old. At 65 I'm sure I cannot do it now - too many bad joints, sore feet. 70 is awesome.
Getting stuck on the trail during the summer season on Whitney is not a big deal - there are so many people on the trail, day and night. The only difficult navigating at night is between Trail Camp and Mirror Lake, which is all rock surface.
You did awesome in your Whitney Climb- but haven't you heard to never hike alone? What if you sprain an ankle? What if you trip and fall? What if a creepy guy follows you? Go with a friend or your husband. Please be safe. 🌤✝️🌻❤Fyi- I am a mom with a beautiful daughter like you. Stay safe. Stay curious. ❤🎶😊💖🌻
You’re right- all definite risks! My mom wasn’t happy about this one. 😹 But if I lived in a “what if” mindset I wouldn’t get very far. I will agree that not having a Garmin InReach on me was dumb.
Your "what if" is hilarious, especially about some stupid creepy guy following her. How many creepy guys do you know could run as fast as her at 9000-14500 elevation? Plus your assessment of her risks is quite off. Mt Whitney Trail has a significant amount of hiker traffic day and night, especially during that time of the year. She was not quite alone in some very remote places. The other risks are all very self manageable by her, and she is obviously a very agile and competent runner and hiker. Based on her competency level, I would think she was safer than any random person driving on the road, where we all are at the mercy of random reckless drivers out there, including DUI, speeding, texting on the phone, dozing off, etc.

Hahaha, dad bods are pretty rad too! Sounds like an epic memory!
That sounds like me too. I used to run a 4:46 mile. Now I have a gut. You’re not alone.

You are a amazing !
That’s a hell of a hike.
I took foreeeveeer
🥾🥾
The parking lot has robber bears!?
I walked down that trail once. Every other time did the direct route.
Should you be castigated or praised?

Sick! Big fan of the speed ultras, they don’t even need to be broken in! And Whitney is a gem, I hope you get up there this summer. 🏔️
Heck yes!!!
Running up and down is fine but it’s such a unique trip you should slow down and smell the….marmots.

Failed? Are you kidding? Epic!
It really was quite epic! Thank you! 💓🏔️

Lol 😹 - I do love a good challenge!!! 😁
Wtf. This video popped up in my feed and I love it. My kind of crazy thing to do - run it on a whim!!!!
YOLO baby!!! It was an epic little adventure.
That's quite a spontaneous attempt 🤣You should totally go back before the end of the season

The last time I did Whitney took 16 hours....but I was 70 years old.

@@shelbzzf Thanks. I said after that if I ever do it again it would be as an overnight.

It took me 15 hours , we started at 2 am. You are beautiful enjoy your hike
Wow, pretty impressive run! Hope to run Whitney someday. PS: I got the same adidas windbreaker as you, and I'm loving it!!
Thank you! Definitely do Whitney! Ahhh and that windbreaker is clutch! My husband lost mine at my last race 😭😭😭 I’m still mourning. 🤣

Yup! That rock surface navigation is tricky when you’re going for time!
Excellent job !!!
I’m 300lbs and I summited in early March. It def took me longer than you hahaha all day
awesome,
so to hike Mt. Whitney even a day hike requires a permit. or just certain months or all year?
either way very cool and killer speed !
You need a permit just past Lone Pine Lake (3ish miles in), there is a nice little sign. Thank you! It’s such a treat to get to play on this mountain!
so why did you fail?
You RAN up??????
Tehehe, a steady trot-power-hike combo. Excited to keep dialing in my uphill skillzz this year. 💪🏽💥
Very impressive
The night l ran down that trail a man died in the hut,hit by lightning
Eeek, that’s frightening and so unfortunate. Life is fragile, make time to adventure!
Right on! You rocked! Did you really make the mistake and go to Crabtree??
Hahaha YUP! Won’t do that again. It was a quick detour, the downhill looked sooo good! 😹
Did you say 5 hours. WOW
🌶️
