    The design and creation process of the Lloyd Coat wallet has been a long one. Based upon the design of a 1950s wallet owned by Charlie's Grandfather, the first and most important part of our job was not to spoil the beautiful lines of the original, but to bring the design up to date, the original having been designed in a world before credit cards or other such things. A design on paper isn't the end of the story though, and the complex shapes and construction had to be brought together into a single beautiful object, with each element adding to the form, as well as the function of the finished piece. The result is a traditional wallet, the largest in our Lloyd series, but sharing the same beautiful curves that run throughout. Each one takes more than a days work to create, with every stitch meticulously done by hand, but we hope as a result will be passed down the generation as was the original the design is based on.

    It's great to see a true craftsman at work in these rushed days. A trade very much like woodcarving where every part of the material is touched, a talent that is coming back. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼😊

      This is true to a degree. What we do would have been less unusual 100 years ago, but it would still have been top end, expensive stuff. The wallet we based the design of this one on was machine stitched and it was made in the 50s and came from somewhere smart in London so even then speed of production was a major factor, probably along with a skill shortage caused by the wars.

      @Undomaranel 5 лет назад +2

      @@rico9163 But it's not always the rich. Sometimes the poor scrounge and save for special occasions; ever read Gift of the Magi? Sometimes people splurge for a costume or a gift or just because they want something cool or useful or a talking point or to support an artisan. Sometimes the rich flaunt.
      There is an overall effect of money being tossed around. It determines what products are available and who owns what item(s). The money traded by the rich then go into the hands of those who managed and/ or created the products, with a tax to the government that (ideally) protects the practice(s).
      What other effects are you reffering to?

    I have a friend who works at McDonald's and he buys shit like this. He happens to really enjoy some of life's finer things. He's single, lives in the somewhat nicer apartments in my area. His apartment is very modern looking and if you had to guess by the way he dresses, the brands he wears, where he lives, and all that you'd assume he had some big wig corporate job and not McDonald's. The funny thing is I know people are gonna call bull shit but in reality, if you're smart, you'll know that you don't have to be rich to have nice things. Just work hard, spend wisely, make sacrifices, save what you can when you can and most importantly don't pay any attention to Joe shmo up the road who always has the latest and greatest because then you'll compete and then when you finally do make that purchase on whatever it is you've been saving for it won't feel as good as it should because I can almost guarantee that mr shmo has already upgraded and now you're competing again. Moral of my statement is pay no attention to anyone else and do what makes you happy. For most people they are there own biggest downfall.

      Well machines require a much bigger investment than a couple instruments. People are really overpaying for this handmade aspect, as it doesn't give any quality advantage to the product, on the contrary it makes the product susceotible to errors or imperfections. I believe that good quality leather machine made wallets wouldn't be any worse just because they are not hand made, as less human effort and time resource go into them, so they are cheaper, but the end product is just the same

      For me, hand made means that each part of the product was deliberately decided, not punched from a mould. Hand made means care and expertise in both the product and the craftsman/ craftswoman, ages of experience making a product designed to last because it's not easily replaceable.
