Great video, Thank You so much! This 67 year old grandma just changed her first truck battery ever! I am so proud of myself, a little greasy and dirty but I felt great when that motor started right up!
Thank you. I can’t believe my dad let me leave the house without teaching me any car maintenance stuff but hey at least I have RUclips. I’ve always paid somebody to do it for me but I want to do my own car maintenance stuff this year and see how much I save. Thanks!

February 2024, and I just did this. I’m not a mechanical guy and I was worried I was gonna get shocked but it seemed to work quite well. Thank you for the video.
Thanks! Just changed my own battery. Only had a huge wrench so it took me bit longer BUT I got it done. Never want to do it again though! At least not on a hot darn day like today in a pandemic with a mask on!
Usually videos made by companies that sell motor vehicle parts, regarding how to install the parts they sell, give correct instructions regarding how to install them. That is not the case here. The _first_ step should be removing the cable from negative terminal. If you remove the battery hold-down clamp first, there is a chance you might bump either the metal clamp, or the wrench you are using to loosen it, into the positive battery terminal. That would create a short between the positive terminal and the negative terminal. Bad thing. If you remove the negative cable first, then there will be no problem should the hold-down clamp accidentally touch the positive terminal. When you remove the cable from the negative terminal, you do not have to worry about preventing it from touching metal parts of the vehicle. There is no harm in that. Next after removing the negative cable, remove the positive cable. Remove the hold-down clamp last. When installing the new battery, it is a good idea to coat the battery posts with a thin film of grease. Also coat the entire cable clamp with a thin layer of grease, inside and out. And put a goodly amount of grease on the threads of the screw that you use to tighten the clamp. This will make sure the parts do not corrode. When you remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, it is probably a good idea to also remove the far end of the cable, from where it connects to a ground point on the vehicle's body, and grease that connection too, including the threads of the screw that screws into the vehicle's body.
This comment is from an experienced professional. He knows that what can go wrong will someday bite you. Do it right once, the first time, so you don't have an embarrassing come back on a simple battery replacement.
Thanks for the help me. My engine turned over slowly and then started when I went to leave the store. Now that I installed my new battery, the engine turns over no problem.
Thank you, this was a big help. Definitely swayed my decision on where I went to buy my new battery. The only thing that could've helped a bit more would've been listing the exact wrenches you used.
Because, negative terminal of the battery is grounded to the body of the vehicle. If positive terminal is removed first then chances of a spark are more if this terminal touches the body through the metal spanner or wrench you are opening with is grounded accidentally and may end in flames because lot of combustible material is around. And chances of this accidental touch are very high.
Had to change a battery yesterday, I would like to know why removing the poles in that order matters, last night I removed the positive before the negative and I'm still here xD
a mechanic came by and fixed my truck and said the battery cables werent connected all the way. well i tighten it up and it still wont start could there be a different connection issue he didnt tell me about..
TheSkidds I always remember it like this. Disconnecting a battery? No Problem. NP. Negative first, and then Positive. And of course the opposite when reconnecting.

@@jackiesicilian5720 Well it is arguable whether you need it or not. You may lose certain settings in your cars computer system but they say after awhile it will relearn them. It's up to you.

Maybe you should have explained, not all vehicle batteries are easily accessible to just grab on and lift them out of the compartment. Some vehicles will require a battery carrier or lifter strap for removal because of restricted space around the battery.. That would have been a perfect way to tell the viewer, if you needed either, carrier or strap, O'Reilly carries both in stock.
Just avoid heavily wooded areas. I would also recommend you take a drivers ed course. After that, try just driving short distances to get used to the feel of your vehicle, you’ll get the hang of it, Ron.

They rate this as a 4/5 difficulty rating. If I can do it it's closer to a one or a two star difficulty rating. Thanks for the video.
Yeah I'd love to know what a 1 star video looks like. "How to roll down your window, using only your hand."
It was 4 green. There's also 5 yellow and 5 red. So it's 4/15.

10 mm or 11mm for battery terminals. And the “hold downs” Vary from 8-12 mm

There’s a higher chance of electrical sparks when the ratchet touches metal while taking off the terminals.
