What a darling gem! Can't really see where you "missed" a meetpoint, but then again, I just love seeing people creating beauty, and am not a connoisseur. That being said, that next one looks a nightmare... for the cutting that is to say, not the gem! Thanks for sharing, Cliff.

Thanks...The price of cubic zirconia varies. The rough is very cheap, but once faceted the price increases dramatically. I'd image just a gem like this would have to be worth $150 plus.

surprisingly sparkly with just a few facets. And a very nice red. I like it. And i like cleopetras eye as well. also, it must feel strange: "yeah, i'm buying another kilo of sapphire,or maybe two" :-) but spending 20-30 bugs for a kilo of trainingstones seems less expensive than i expected. Who knows, if the world changes forward to more homeoffice jobs,i might consider gem cutting as well. never know when you need a second career path. and most jobs don't end with sparkles.

Hi Cliff, only been watching for a few months. Your gem cutting videos are quite a revelation to a newbie in the fossicking hobby. Love the graphics, hopefully when I'm old and grey I'll be able to start cutting. Hang on I am gray., hence the name tag. Bugger I had better get started soon. That last project look like a mission, it should look spectacular when finished. Keep Rockin

It's funny that you mentioned chipping a stone. I did that just today measuring a princess cute white sapphire with my metal calipers. I don't believe they chipped it but I do believe that they found a fracture or a cleavage that I hadn't seen. I will be honest I didn't look the stone over good initially. By the way I love this cut. I wasn't sure I was going to like it at first. As usual you made a believer out of me.

    Hi Cliff,
CZ seems to really sparkle. I have an Orange one I cut and it always draws people's eye when I wear it. Yours catches the eye. That was a really interesting cut. It helps when you do the renderings. I need to do more squares and rectangles if I ever want to get good at them. Again your work shows me what's possible.
Before you cut the corners how do you prevent chipping? I keep chipping them.
It is a really pretty red. I am still striving to get my girdle thickness mastered and I loved seeing yours on this gem.
That is some great advice on buying synthetics and I am sorry to say I have spent too much on synthetic rough. Now that I have a small saw to cut my own I will be buying bouls.
Well they cancelled the Gem Faire here in Washington state due to the Covid-19 virus. So things are starting to get locked down here. Please stay safe there my friend.
That Cleopatra's Eye is going to be stunning.
Is that the one you were talking to MBK about?
    What a cool teaser. 🙂.
Hey Jaws stop by here for supper and I will feed you well. You can talk shop with Action Jackson. Between the two of you I am sure you will convince Taylor and Ed in no time.
    Cheers my friend.

    • @VintageTimeGems

Hi Tam...Yes any gem can chip. I run the lap at a moderate speed, and use plenty of water. Make sure that the lap is under 600 grit as the girdle thins out. Chipping on corners can be a issue. Be careful sawing boules they can cleave. Use a very thin saw. Cheers Cliff

This video was very pleasing for me to watch. I am very soon going to be starting gem faceting, and cubic zirconia seems like a very nice material to use. Another desirable option I’ve seen was fluorite. What are your thoughts on this material? In addition, rather than using a slurry, could I use a lightning lap? They have 14k and 50k plates. Is it always necessary to use a near 50k grit lap/mixture as you did, or could 14k get the job done?
