Cutting my own gemstone design in Blue Topaz

- I go through the process of cutting a blue topaz using a design that I created myself. I based my design to resemble Link's blue shield from the Legend of Zelda games. Some of the facets on the crown of my shield design create the Triforce. I used GemCad to create my design.

That was a fun stone!
My brother what would you do if the precious stone has a defect or it broke? If that broke on me I dont know what I would do. Probably have an aneurism+heart attack and then find the person that sold it to me and send him to jesus.
I would likely accept a return on a stone that broke due to defect or fracture plane in the stone. I haven't had anyone tell me that they have broken one of my stones yet.@@Nw-zh1uq
@@MattsCornerofGemCutting Sorry I was not clear enough. I meant what would you do if the uncut stone the one you bought broke while you where trying to refine it. Not the ones you already refined.
@@Nw-zh1uq I try to purchase most of my rough in person to evaluate it myself and avoid buying rough that I think will fall apart.
Sometimes I have to change up the cut mid cut if something happens. Recently I was cutting a sapphire in a hexagon cut that had a bad fractural flaw near one of the points that I worried would cause the point to break off easily. I had cut in some of the pavilion facets and the girdle at that point. I stopped and redesigned the cut to cut out that point and the opposite one. The finished cut was a slightly cushioned rectangle instead.
Let's say I was cutting this design in the topaz and I dropped it while cutting it and and one of the sharp tips broke off. I would have to change the design into a cut cornered triangle to accommodate for the breakage. If it happened to break in half, I would determine if the pieces were big enough to be cut into individual stones. If not, I would set them aside and move on with a different stone and not think too much about it.
Most of the time, a stone can still be salvaged from a break during the cut. I really don't have much issue with stones unless they already had some bad fractures in the rough before cutting.
@@MattsCornerofGemCutting That is very good to hear. The fact that they are salvagable most of the time is great.
Thank you for the sincere answer and the valuable information. May you keep prospering both in wealth and in health.
You know that the Nintendo generation is all grown up when professionals start integrating it into their work!
I did a double take when I heard "legend of Zelda"... That is some POWERFUL alpha nerd stuff right there and I am here for it.
No clue why RUclips recommended this, but holy.... it's beautiful! I guess I'm now into gem cutting 🤷♂️
Thank you! Gem cutting isn't a well known art. If is a fun thing to be into.
Yep, I'm in the same boat. Didn't know that gems had to be cut yesterday... now I know where to buy the equipment. All that's left is to convince the wife.
lol
The final cut is beautiful. Its an impressive design, especially for how simple it seems to be. The light really pops in a way that only the good ones do.
Thanks!
Love the Triforce symbol! This would look great in yellow topaz too!
This design is something else.. I love the way this one turned out
Grad you like it!
one of societies milestones, gem cutting inspired by video games.
That turned out gorgeous!
Thanks!
I thought of the tri-force as soon as I saw it. Beautiful
As a november kid who insisted on blue topaz over citrine and loves Zelda... I'm obsessed!
As a huge Zela fan. I love the combo of the shield and the triforce design especially!
I cut a sapphire in a very similar trilium design and color. Mounted in a white gold pendant design it is quite stunning as well. If i remember it was 3.4 ct.
I enjoy your videos as a jeweler with over 40 years experience you do very good work.
Beautiful and a big improvement over the original. Thanks for adding some of the steps other gem cutters edit out of their videos.
another gorgeous stone and a really cool cut! thanks as always for sharing
Thank You!
Always love seeing people use their skills to make something of their own design!
I really love this gem. It came out perfect. Great job
If you sell that some gamer will be ecstatic with that. Well done!
Seriously, this is awesome! I am speechless. I want one of those.
It's looking unreal. Fantastic design
It looks like a bougainvillea! So pretty!
I like this design. From the bottom it looks like a cube, viewing from it's corner. From the top it almost looks like an an infinite number of smaller and smaller triangles, disappearing into the horizon at the edge.
Gorgeous design on a gorgeous stone.
Dazzling. A really gorgeous cut
i love the design, and i really like the idea of salvaging old gems to turn into new things. that's pretty clever
Stunning cut! Very inspirational man, what a beautiful stone that has ended up.
beautiful work and very reminiscant of the Zelda shield.
Anyone else looking at this like, take my money. Huge oot fan, that is just stunning
It came out beautiful. 🙂
Beautiful cut, amazing that a game gave you the inspiration for this.
Awesome cut that really came out beautifully
Would be nice to make another of these but in yellow topaz for that golden Triforce look.
Very beautiful, stoned and cut idea You definitely a master in your craft.
I absolutely love the fact your inspiration was Zelda. Your gems are gorgeous and I thank the YT algorithm gods that brought your channel to my attention
Thanks! I had a lot of fun designing that one!
Even just looking at the thumbnail I was like oh nice a Triforce jewel, great work!
getting recommened this video and just seeing the thumbnail immediately made me think of "legend of zelda" vibes, and to hear you say that in the video made me absolutely want one of these things one day, being able to make your own designs must be so much fun to do, especially for themed pieces such as this!
This overall shape is breathtaking. I very much liked it before the triforce pattern, but both ways, seriously beautiful! Well done!
Absolutely stunning result 👏 👌 👍 😮 stone has so much more glimmer and pizzazz 🤩
Lovely gem and great vid m8 :D would love to see that design cut again sometime
Thank You!

Truly a work of art! Gorgeous desing and finish!
Thank you very much!
It looks good I was a little worried 10:26 cause it didn’t look the greatest but I guess that’s cause it was on that stick. The final stone looks awesome. Good job
Well I'm going through Zelda again and I'm 65 and my 64 plays just fine ❤love Zelda

What a wonderful design, and a great insight into the process. Glad this showed up on my feed, I thought it was a viral video, and it should be!
Thank you! I would like it if it went viral! :p
excellent work, lots of detail, learning, and enjoying the information.
That looks so dope!

Wow, love the design and workmanship! Great Job!
Wow.......its beautiful, and great craftsmanship.....
Thanks for sharing your videos...😊
Thats awesome! Loved zelda oot, best game ever 🔥 the triforce design turned out great
Gorgeous! Well done! ❤❤❤
Beautiful design and wonderful result! And I liked the explanations you gave, too. About thecstone, and the contrast of Topas. It is realy a beautiful thing!
That came out looking amazing! You are a gem artist for sure, and it is an art. A very skilled art especially when you are creating your own designs and not copying a basic cut. But I do gotta say, I did shed a tear for how much stone you lost in that cut. Seeing the end result was worth it, now if you could find a bigger stone and make a bigger one!😂
crazy beautiful work !
haha! gorgeous! i totally clicked this cause i was like “is that a triforce?” and yep! love it
excellent craftmanship and voiceover
I was going -Kind of looks like a Hylian shield from Zelda with the triforce in the center before you said it. Excellent work!
To find your own Cut's, very artistic and exiting indeed! Truly, I find that like the work of a sculptor! And Oh my Gosh, what a Beauty you created here! Hypnotizing cut! Fascinating to me is the fact that this stone (I might be wrong and probably am), has 10 facets on top, a turtle (also faceted?) but the 'Sparkleresult' is like it would have hundreds of facets.
I live in Quebec, but next summer will visit my son in Utah SLC, and I would love to bring you 2 Stones to be recut. A Golden coloured Topaz who shows signs of being worn, and another Stone I do not know what it is, only that it belonged to my Grandfather and has white, red and green colors opposite one of another (sorry it's a bit difficult to describe). Thank you so much for all your Videos!
Awesome cut!
Wow you could probably charge a good premium on this cut for engagement rings etc.
Cool cut.
Another thing is your design is sweet. I think it looks dam good
Oh my god what an insane design 🤯 it sparkle's very well 👏
Would you ever share the diagram of it ?
Yeah, I plan to eventually share some of my designs on The Gemology Project website.
So beautiful and i love the color 👋💎👍
thats is insane
Crazy, i clicked on the video because i thought - this looks zelda like and intriguing. Currently playing TOTK. Also id like to buy this stone or one like it.
Beautiful work!
Thanks!
This was a great video, enjoyed it from start to finish 😊
The thumbnail image also looks remarkably close to Nayru's symbol behihd the triforce as well.
Hmm, maybe a little. I was just trying to make the reflection pattern look cool.
@@MattsCornerofGemCutting You definitely did! It's lovely! I just saw the three rings and thought it was quite neat, even if it wasn't intentional.
Perfect
Beautiful Cut Design !
Thanks!
thank you for sharing the design! can't wait to give it a try
Good luck!

Awesome!
Thanks!
Your design is gorgeous! Also, I appreciate your informative and well done video
Excellent 👍
Really cool
I am under my misses name but I am Jim. You are the youngest person that I have ever seen do this ad I am impressed big time. I am wanting to start out faceting but I have no idea where to start, Can you get me started please. I mean a machine and grinding wheels and stuff please. Thank you. I have been watching your sapphire videos and they are great. Thank you for putting them up
Thanks! Um starting out depends on how much you want to spend. Ultratech has some nice machines, but they aren't the most budged friendly. Sometimes there are people selling used machines on the Faceting Finds Facebook page if you are looking for something cheaper. I use pretty standard grit laps for cutting from wherever, but I like some of the laps Gearloose offers for polishing stones.
