Critical Mas(s) with Massad Ayoob is a show that provides expert analysis over a wide range of contemporaneous topics related to civilian and law enforcement self defense, the use of force, and second amendment issues, provided by a renowned and established author with a career spanning decades in training law enforcement officers and the public at large, who is frequently called upon to provide expert witness testimony.
ABOUT MASSAD AYOOB:
Massad Ayoob has been handgun editor of GUNS magazine and law enforcement columnist for AMERICAN HANDGUNNER since the 1970s, and has published thousands of articles in gun magazines, martial arts publications, and law enforcement journals. He is the author of some twenty books on firearms, self-defense, and related topics, including “In the Gravest Extreme” and “Deadly Force,” widely considered to be authoritative texts on the topic of the use of lethal force.
The winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner of the Year Award in 1998, Mas has won several state and regional handgun shooting championships. Ayoob was the first person to earn the title of Five Gun Master in the International Defensive Pistol Association. He is the current President of the Second Amendment Foundation. He served 19 years as chair of the Firearms Committee of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, and several years as a member of the Advisory Board of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. In addition to teaching for those groups, he has also taught
for the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors and the International Homicide Investigators seminars.
Mas has received judicial recognition as an expert witness for the courts in weapons and shooting cases since 1979, and served as a fully sworn and empowered, part time police officer for 43 years, mostly at supervisor rank. Ayoob founded the Lethal Force Institute in 1981 and served as its director until 2009, and now trains through Massad Ayoob Group. He has
appeared on CLE-TV delivering continuing legal education for attorneys, through the American Law Institute and American Bar Association, and has been retained to train attorneys to handle deadly force cases through the Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network. Ayoob served for two
years as co-vice chair of the Forensic Evidence Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He also appeared in each episode of Personal Defense TV (Sportsman’s Channel).

What questions would you like to ask Massad?
I know you aren't fond of open carry, but where are the statistics for the "you'll be the first to get shot"? I've seen interviews with criminals that say they'll stay away from what might be a threat to their plans.
I open carry and have for quite some time now. I've never had an issue. Why do so many people hate on it when cops do it every day?
@ Wilson Combat
2011's vs everything ?
as a goodwill ambassador for firearms and firearm ownership how do we best go about being pro-active in getting new people involved / converting antigunners?
I have 2 or three really nice pistols that I carry on a regular basis that I made by myself and for myself using 80% frames and high quality components. I am very proficient and comfortable with them, what are the pros and cons of carrying them, especially if they ever have to be deployed?
What’s the gun you enjoy shooting the most?
My wife walked in while I was watching this video and she said “ Oh look at him with his little basket of questions! He's like Mister Rogers for guns spread good words to the neighborhood” 😂😂
This man is a encyclopedia of knowledge. And has the experience to go with it. I have several of his books too. Bought way before the information age we have now. Keep up the teaching lessons of experience.
I learn something new every time I listen to Mr Ayoob speak. Grateful that he is so generously sharing his knowledge and experience with us!
He is also a thesaurus of explanation.
1 of the few people that i automatically believe. Ayoob is where the b.s. stops.
No doubt, an SME at many levels
Seriously, this should be a weekly series.
@Unknown User a whole lot of repeating questions lol, unless we can ask him to complain about politics
I would have given your comment two thumbs up if it had let me.
Slacker deluxe+He's awesome isnt he? Ive been a fan since 2015, when I first got my CPL.
I just made a post saying
"MY BIGGEST CONCERN AS A CONCEALED CARRIER IS, should I have the misfortune of being unjustly prosecuted by an overzealous, 2nd amendment hating city attorney, is not being able to acquire Mr. Ayoob's services as an expert witness at my trial! I have never had the pleasure of watching trial footage where he testifies, but I believe, he would kick tons of ass, both as an expert witness and at helping your attorneys develop a second to none defense that would undoubtedly have no other outcome other than seeing justice prevail."
I would never want to be an attorney, prosecuting a 50/50 trial and have Madsad testify on the defense 's behalf. Nope.
Thank you so much!
I can’t believe Mr. Ayoob just answered my question. I grew up reading his work. Awesome.
Thanks for asking!
When wise elders speak, I listen.
Massad, you are such an asset to the firearm culture and our 2nd Amendment, thank you so very much! God bless you & may he keep you safe! Thanks to Wilson Combat for having you.
A million thanks to Wilson Combat for making available the legendary wisdom and experience of Mr. Massad Ayoob. In today's world, solid, reliable advice such as his has become quite rare and therefore many times more valuable. I treasure every video.
"Extreme social dysfunction emergency!" Mas, never lose your sense of humor! Not only is your advice right on the bullseye, but your funnies make them all the better! We're laughing like crazy over here!
Massad is an excellent gun instructor, but I think in other eras he would had been an excellent long sword or rapier master too
Mas let his formal guard down a few times in this one. I love it, we need more candid Mas!!!
I took LFI 1 years ago in Connecticut. Two days on the range, Friday evening after range time with instructors I went to the lounge to see if anyone else from the class was there, one of the instructors was there talking to this guy, waved me,over said join us and as I sat down was introduced to Mas! Highlight of my life, sat and talkedfor over an hour!
I really enjoy these videos. Thank you and keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
I have carried a Colt series 80 1911 now for 30+ years. I am retired military with years of training. I have always been taught that when I have a threat infront of me that I have to point my weapon at, the safety thumb safety is off. When I come off of the target, the safety is back on. I personally don't agree with having my weapon on a threat with the safety on only to disengage it to fire the weapon. I always have my trigger finger outside the trigger guard anyway. I guess it all comes down to how your initially trained. Like I said, from years of military trainig, when the weapon is up and on target the safety is off and my finger is ready to pull the trigger. Off target, safety on.
Massad I love this Q&A at 67 and carry everyday (legal) I enjoy and learn everyday.
Thank y'all.
Love these segments with Mass he’s an icon in my book.
Bet nobody ever thought they would hear Mas say "Turdburgler"..............
Looking for this comment, too funny he's such an innocent guy he didnt even get it lol
Hearing him day “turd burglar” was the best thing ive ever heard
lol, i caught that!
Beavis and Butthead terms! Mas is so cool!
I'm 77 yr old unimpressed by MOST all people, this man I would be honored to and would like to call friend. If he ever acts ded the annual shot show in Vegas would drive the 17 hours from my home to meet and hear him.
So much respect to this honest man!! Cheers from France 🇫🇷
I really enjoy & value your Q&A sessions. Given that the average EDC practitioner will probably finish their lifetime of daily carry without ever having to perform a defensive display of their weapon, let alone proceed any farther toward the self preservation goal, it's advisable & necessary to continually review these kinds of Q&A sessions, in my opinion. Thanks for all that you have done for the gun community, legally & logically.
More of this!
I'm a big fan of Bill Jordan, Elmer Keith & Jeff Cooper. Massad too! Thanks for the share!!
Thank you for answering my question Mr. Ayoob. I value your opinion and felt that the answer was very logical. I have family in restricted states and these are the thoughts that often go through my mind in preparation for a visit. I appreciate you clarifying the predicament and helping me make a decision.
I'm glad we were able to answer it! Thanks for asking. A lot of other people wanted to know that one too!
@Magic Prepper
Hey bro good seeing you over here! You need a nice Wilson double stack for your collection!
TPR
@@theprepperrevelator haha I wish! SFX9 would be awesome.
@@MagicPrepper I just picked up a Wilson Experior commander double stack with a dot and I can’t wait to go shoot it. Meet me at the range. Also just a FYI a bunch of instructors I’ve trained with don’t like 10 round mags in guns they were meant for due to reliability. They recommend using a gun that was actually built for that capacity mag, like a Glock 26, they said a Glock 19 with a 10 round mag wasn’t as reliable, just sharing the wisdom shared with me.
TPR
@@theprepperrevelator and thats why I picked up a Sig P227 Carry 😉
I knew this would be good. I’d like to hear responses to another batch of top picks
sometime Thanks Mas👍🏻
Excellent! Please do this again. I can listen to Mr. Ayoob all day long. I learn things still after carrying for 40 years. Will be buying his books.
I really enjoyed this Q&A session. Lots of good info.
Great Q&A. Thanks so much
You are so welcome
Those who pocket carry should inspect and possibly clean their weapon weekly. I found it gets loaded with lint and crud pretty quickly. Possibly sooner depending your particular environmental conditions.
DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster keeps my EDC clean.
Indeed. Small stones or grains of sand may take down the tool.
My wife pocket carry’s a Sig P238 and that needs to be seriously cleaned after a week or two. I remember seeing it after the first two weeks and asking her wtf happened?!?! And of course found out pretty quickly that it’s a genuine thing that happens often. Be well and stay safe out there 👉🏼🇺🇸👈🏼🙏🗽💪🐺
Great format.... Q & A.... Please do more ... Great job !!!
Excellent point about calling 911 after a non-shooting encounter.
Thank you
Excellent, wide-ranging q&a.
This 17 minutes zoomed by, it was such fun!
Awesome! Thank you!
A lot of people might like to meet a Hollywood celebrity or a famous singer. I would like to shake the hand of Mas Ayoob as this man has done so much for the Gun community. Thanks Mas for all you do and I hope to meet you in person someday.
You're an amazing speaker with a wealth of knowledge and I continually find myself learning things that I never considered. Another great video, thank you so much!
Wow, thank you!
I hear Mas' voice in my head every time I holster up. Am I crazy?
Nothin like first rate top notch experience and wisdom . Why even Massad's barber has learned to cut each single one of his hairs exactly the same every time . Amazing barber .
Indeed, Mr. Ayoub is a treasure of knowledge & practical wisdom! Re post defense insurance…absolutely! I wouldn’t carry without it, it can be a lifesaver keeping one out of prison even when you were 💯 % in the right. Keep the issuer’s card with the 24/7 attorney hotline phone number with you every time you carry your gun. Read self defense books put out advising in how to conduct yourself after a self-defense incidents, and follow it. Be sure to call 911 immediately after the life-threatening event has passed, and dummy-up about providing details related to the event to LE other than you were fearing for your life, and any requests made for EMS services. Then call the attorney hotline number before the police arrive, politely invoking your 4th, 5th & 6th Amendment rights until you’ve been advised otherwise by your attorney. Again, politely but firmly resist goadings to provide LE investigators anything until you’ve been advised by your attorney. Definitely buy the insurance!
Mr. Ayoob, the more I watch your videos, the more I wish I had friends like you!!
Massad us the best!!!
Thanks Mas, all these years and you're still teaching me.
Daily carry: Beretta 92 SB Compact Italy circa 1982.
Two spare mags, with a Cold Steel Recon 1 knife as well. Custom built by me for me.
Be safe brother....thank you!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Mas!!! I always enjoy your feedback!
Your statement "use the gun that works best for you" is spot on. I guess I am an anomaly, for me that happens to be a Colt SAA. Probably because that is the handgun I learned to shoot nearly 70 years ago. It has a "pointability" I have never been able to duplicate with any other type handgun. At a distance ot 10 yards or less the gun shoots where I look without use of the sights, even in near dark conditions. Back in Jan, '73 the gun saved my life late one night when shot at by a home intruder in near total darkness. All I could see was a very dim silhouette briefly illuminated by his muzzle flashes. I double tapped two shots that impacted within 2 inches at a range of 12 feet. Would I recommend a Colt SAA to others? Absolutely not!
I'd listen to Massad talk about the weather. Glad to see him on RUclips more often now!
Massad is a man you can learn from and I have for 20 yrs.
This is a very valuable service for the armed citizen. Even better is to sign up for one of Mas' MAG40 or MAG20 class. Time and money well spent!!!
Mas is a national treasure, not to mention the foremost voice of reason and knowledge on this subject.
When someone can speak this good and answer questions this fast iv heard you need to know 10 times more about the subject to speak in this fashion ,, no doubt this guy has got that covered 👍
Nothing but common sense from this guy. In a world where common sense is not so common.......Thank you
Massad sounds like the most respectable serious and intelligent person on RUclips.
WOW! A 1918 Colt 1911, now that's what I'm talking about:)
Thanks
Massad I am a ccw NRA/USCCA instructor the one line suggestion to say I preformed a defensive display of my firearm when speaking to police is priceless and possibly the best piece if information I have ever heard stated. I plan to use that in my classes. Thank you for a brilliant job.
i am a huge six foot four three hundred pound man when i jumped out of the car and tried to bully the smaller man a case of road rage he reached but never pointed when i called the police they told me that i was the aggressor now i see my mistake the police did let slip out his name during the phone call lesson learned much respect for you massad
MAs I LOVE YOU SO MUCH you’re the greatest person ever please please come to Texas
A spare mag isn't so much about having 30+ rds. But rather that most malfunctions are mag related.
To have the option to drop the mag and insert a fresh one is a huge advantage over fiddling with the mag that casued a malfunction.
Thank you Mas and Titus!
Our pleasure!
Good advice Massad. Mike
Harries was a personal friend of mine. Because of
my career Mike was a mentor & taught me many
firearms tactics, which
contributed to my 30
years of surviving! Massad
keep up the good work
for Wilson’s Company. 👍😊🇺🇸
I always try to watch an learn from these videos thank you
Glad to hear it!
Awesome Video. Thanks!
Been reading Mas's articles and books since the mid-80s.
It's great that in the digital age we have these videos.
Love the question and answer series! Very informative. Thank you!
This man is one of the most intelligent person about firearms that's ever lived
I have become a big fan of Massad! I have learn so much from watching his channel . Thank you Massad!
Glad to hear that
We love you Mas for all you do God bless you.
Awesome answers. Thanks
Great show! Along with lubrication, be aware the lint creeps into guns in holsters under shirts. Tight tolerances may mean your gun fails to engage or disengage a component with a somewhat small piece of lint.
lint gets everywhere
What a GREAT video, THANK YOU!
excellent! Good job, as always! Thanks
What a fun segment. Thanks again for all the awesome information. We’re so lucky to have you!
"Prep More"
Lol. Straight and to the point. Brevity is the soul of wit...
I had to miss the live chat, but what a pleasure to listen to Massad Ayoob next day. Thank you.
Another good one----thank you!
Thank you for all of these videos. New GP100 owner getting ready to go to the range, these are essential reading for any new gun owners.
Brilliantly done
Great answers to really good questions.
Thanks for your knowledge. I always look forward to your videos
So nice of you
7:10 The AWB of 1994 limited magazines to 10 rounds, and that was responsible for a sort of renewed interest in the 1911 pistol.
They had fallen out of favor somewhat because of the so-called high capacity 'wondernines'.
When the AWB kicked in, that changed. It no longer made sense to have a bulky pistol that was limited to ten rounds, so smaller 9mm pistols and 1911s became more popular. The reasoning was that if you could only have ten rounds, they might as well be big ones.
Excellent ! Great Q &A format. In fact the best I have ever watched. Of course having the most knowledgeable presenter in firearms as the host doesn’t hurt. Godspeed.
Very enjoyable and very informative. I hope this becomes a regular feature. Cheers!
That was very helpful. Great questions with even greater answers.
Awesome venue for answering our questions. Thanks, Mas. You are highly respected.
Excellent info! I've been following Massad for many years.
Great show. There are none better than Mas.
Thank you, Wilson Combat channel!

Interesting commentary. Thank you!
Awesomeness as always
Excellent info. Thank you
An insight from Mas is a valuable asset.
More of this please!
I love this have your book and have followed you for years ❤ Please keep it up. Thank you for all you do for the gun community!
Just want to take a moment to thank you for your videos. I've never carried a firearm but i do know how to handle one and safety protocols. Your videos go beyond that and are very informative. I'm about to get my LTC. And you have taught me things I will remember in the future. So thanks I'll keep watching everything you put out.
Love your works. Started reading with your book "In The Gravest Extreme" back in 1980.
Thank you. Great information.
Mas your professionalism is un wavering! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have learned extremely valuable insight from you that just might keep me out of trouble if I ever did myself in a position that I have to defend my self with a firearm.
I love guns and shooting but don't want to hurt anyone if possible. Thanks for all the great advice im 62 and i never carried unless I was going to shoot targets .Im no expert but know a bit since I've been shooting about everything my whole life.Think in going to carry now though. Thanks Again.
You're looking really good, Mas. Thank you for the great info. Loved this format and always love listening to you. Can't wait to take Mag 40 again.
Thanks for another great video. My wife walked in while I was watching this video and she said “Oh look at him with his little basket of questions! He's like Mister Rogers for guns and spreads good words and wisdow to the neighborhood” 😂😂
This was an excellent Q and A, especially your explanation about the differing standards of proof required for the defensive drawing your firearm vs pulling the trigger. It is always good to review and refresh in your mind these critical components in the judicious use of lethal countervailing force.
What a fantastic video, thank you so much Mas!
Great questions!
