@@crazykev5 much more handy (especially with a vertical grip) in the field compared to rifles with longer barrels but the sig 716i is heavier. However, once in position (i.e. deer stand) the weight is less of a factor.
@rossdonaghy1748 the 716i's trigger out of the box is about an 8lb pull. Its heavy AF! He swapped the Ruger trigger with a Geisselle and left the SIG trigger stock. That says it all.
@michaelpereira808 EXACTLY! The SIG is heavier for sure but it has gone through more extensive testing that all but probably 3 other AR10 style rifles and those cost more than double or triple the 716I. Its a 1 MOA tool with a trigger swap, proper glass, and the right operator.

Really glad to see a follow up with the Ruger SFAR, watched your earlier videos on it and have one myself, really cool to see it getting more popular as I think it's very underrated for the price
I have the Sig 716 piston rifle I bought years ago. It's been flawless. I changed the charging handle and put a Timney trigger in it. My only complaint is its HEAVY. 12 lb out of the box. I just ordered the Ruger SFAR. Hopefully I won't have the issues many have had.
Awesome video series. Thank you for the effort. I agree with you with longevity being a concern and the only unknown with the sfar. If it runs long term ruger has a winner for sure. I’ve got a heavier rifle already for sapr/sass duty. I’d use the sfar for plinking and hunting. I’m gonna go for it in part because of these videos.
Thanks for ur review. I just want yo clear up some facts. As for the sig you can change out a lot more parts. I’ve changed trigger, muzzle device, safety levers, mag button, charging handle ,grip, stock. All ar15 parts. I’ve been running the 716i for a while and haven’t had any issues or inconsistent groupings. But even so thank you for the review.
My Ruger has had numerous problems, to many to mention. I will say it’s the mist accurate though. It shoots 1 hole groups whenever I do 1 shot groupings. Weird thing is though whenever I do 3-5 shot groups it opens up to 6 moa, that’s if I can get it to shoot 5 shots in a row
Nice, I am loving my SFAR. Don't get to shoot its as much cause of my job. But right now I have about 400 rounds through it. I went with a Blackout Defense AR15 3.0LB Zero trigger. STNGR 15" Handrail, Penguin Grip, H2 Buffer ,VG6 Gamma 762 Muzzle Brake, Bushnell Scope, and aftermarket stock(can't remember the name). One thing about the handguard, even though it might say it's for an AR15, it might not work on the SFAR. STNGR handguard will require you to change the gas block. The stock SFAR gas block is to wide at the top.
My sig hates the Amax round but loves the sst rounds. Sig, in my experience, is much more picky as far as ammo is concerned if you want moa or sub moa groups with ga tory ammo. Good stuff, brother.
Good video. I have a 716i that consistently makes 2 - 3 inch shot patterns at 50 yards. Not happy with my purchase. Never thought I'd regret buying a Sig.
How are you that bad of a shooter? I shot sub 2 MOA with a M1A scout squad off my tailgate with iron sights…. @100 yards. You better tighten up on the gun, clamp that handguard, drive that shoulder forward, and crush the pistol Grip, your groups wont suck as bad. People dont know how to shoot higher caliber semi autos for some reason. To everyone, everytime you shoot any gun, youre goal is to replicate a gun a vise, comfort is not the name of the game. Learned that on the M110.
@channeellll7623 I guess you didn't understand what I was saying. The gun is not good. I sold it and replaced it with a s&w that I get shot groups of .8 @100 yards with Winchester white box.
The Sig strongly prefers 175gr ammo. I was frustrated with mine until I tried both ammo weights back to back. What a difference! Both match loads from Sig. I've since found similar results with other factory loads using 175 Sierra Match Kings (same bullet Sig match load uses). I know both spec 1:10 twist rate. I don't have the Ruger yet, but I suspect based on all the lightweight parts the Ruger might need wear parts replaced more often. The Sig is used by the Indian military, so the toughness should be there.
Yeah I’ve found the m118 for cheap online and that’s what I shoot exclusively from the sig. Pretty consistent 1.5 inch groups or better and at 300 hitting a 6 inch plate is pretty easy just using a simply hold for me. For what it’s worth, I’ve had a few different AR-10s I just can’t get to group with the m80 ball stuff. It’s atrocious.
Yes I have the tread snake bite se. They are very ammo specific and when you find what it likes they are lights out. I have a buddy who hands loads and I would take my sig over the ruger everyday of the week
716i for sure, i love mine. I live in New Hampshire and have access to both companies and love both companies, but right now I'm saving up for the sig spear in 308
Interesting enough after changing the trigger group to a Geissele 2 Stage trigger on my Sig 716i I'm able to shoot 0.875 MOA consistently using 175 grain SMK handloads at 100 yards (2.125 at 200 yards) and .633 groups out of 168 Hornady BTHP off the bench and a stable hold with bi-pod. Proper shooting technique unleashes the potential of this weapon on the bench, prone position, or using a braced position. Using ball 7.62X51 M80 ammo performs excellent at various ranges and shoots 1 MOA to 1.75 MOA 10 to 20 shot "stressed" hot rifle groups at 100 yards off the bench and 3 to 4 MOA standing. All that from a trigger upgrade and a good LPVO scope.
The Ruger bolt is certainly the area of concern for durability, but I like to think the numerous extra vents they designed into the front of the receiver and not using more gas than you need would mitigate that to a large degree. They talk about using some proprietary fancy alloy in the bolt's construction to address strength too but who's to say that's not marketing fluff.
Marketing fluff? From Ruger? On the rare occasions I have dealt with Ruger customer service they have been nothing but straight up honest and very generous. It is my belief that Ruger has the best customer service in the industry. Does that mean there is a lifetime guarantee? Of course not. But they stand behind what they build.
The SFAR bolt looks like no other bolt. The color, feel and all do not look like a standard bolt. I’d say it is for sure different, will it last? Who knows… no one on the boob tube has posted bolt failure yet… that I know of
Both great rifles. But I'll take the Ruger. My recommendation is put an adjustable gas block like rifle speed on it and it should be more reliable and still cheaper than the sig even with the extra cost for a new rail and gas block
I sold my 716i before the Ruger came out. I just couldn’t run it like an AR15. Most people assume that means recoil but it’s like you said. The actual manipulation of the gun is where it starts adding up. My SFAR just came in and I laughed like a mad man at how light it was when I first picked it up.
I was really interested in the SFAR, but there wasn't a whole lot out there on them. Your videos put me over the top, so thank you for the review. Waiting on the optic, but I like what the SFAR looks like so far. Threw on a SD-E trigger like yours, BCM M-Lok Handguard, Seekins ambi safety, Radian Raptor, BKings Mag Release button and a BAD enhanced bolt catch. One note, all the parts are AR-15 compatible EXCEPT the bolt catch is AR10. Noticed that the muzzle device was on there with a grip of death but the barrel nut was not tight at all, so I'm glad I replaced the handguard as a QC check. The castle nut was also loose when I torqued it checking and the one thing I was disappointed with was finding the butt plate is polymer (found this out when I tried to stake the nut). Anyways, thanks bro. Not for nothin, but your videos helped me pull the trigger on getting this before they jump in price to $1500-1600, so thanks.
Love the accuracy of my SFAR...BUT....My rifle would not cycle properly. Jammed up every few rounds once warm. Sent it back to Ruger, they returned it in ten days. I took it out and after about 60 rounds...it literally started smoking, bolt jammed shut, total failure!! Super disappointed...sent it back to Ruger AGAIN...we will see what happens.

My 716I has been very reliable. But I like to tinker so I built a couple AR308 DPMS builds. I like them better because I can buy lots of parts and different caliber uppers. Can't lie I may sell the 716I as well. Good gun just can't tinker with it like I want.
Mine shoots anything after I polish the feed ramps! It shoots 150 grain steel ammo 168 grain 178, 125 , no issues! Did have issues before I polish the feed ramps!! My loads except for the steel ammo!!
I don’t understand why anyone would sacrifice the velocity in the .308 by running a 16” barrel. I like that at least the SFAR has an 20” option, Sig doesn’t for the 716i. Since this is about the only raving review in favor of the SFAR that I’ve seen (too many others have shown issues pertaining to the gas system w/ either over gassing on 3 or failures to feed on 2) I’m wondering how reliable it will be long-term.
You don't sacrifice that much when going from 20" to 16" barrel. You lose, what? 300 ft lbs of energy? On non-bullpup rifles though, the savings in weight and ease of movement can outweigh the loss of velocity.
I’ve found to get the best groups and the most consistency on my 716i with 149 M80 7.62x51 nato. Matter of fact, I bought mine with the sierra 4x14 scope. I’m only 1 click off zero elevation with the 7.62x51. Everything else the scope has to be cranked. Coincidence?🤔
How is the interchangability of the bolt carrier on the ruger? I don't have any experience with the AR 10's and the difference between the parts vs Ar 15's.
I also have both the ruger and the Sig.. if I could only buy 1 … that’s hard because they are 2 totally different guns IMO. But I would go with the Ruger .. I payed like 1500 for the Sig and 1000 for the ruger. You can take that 500 extra bucks and spend on a optic and sling and maybe a few boxes of ammo. The trigger on the sig need to be replaced. I really like the 716i but I would say I love my SFAR I also agree that the Sig feels like it would live with a high round count … the SFAR I don’t believe can take a really high round count
Great vid. Glad to see you picked the Ruger! I've just over a 100 rounds through mine with ZERO issues. I already really really like this gun....if it stands the test of time?? I'm gonna LOVE it!!! Actually I love it now & it looks damn good IMO?? I have a crappy vid up on YT if you wanna check it out?? Thanx again for the video & honest your opinion review!!! 👍
Tbh I only shot 5 shots and the the third shot jammed on my ruger sfar but I think I wasn’t holding it tight enough I need to shoot it more to find out but I still love it.
Neither. Sig is too heavy SFAR is poorly designed and built. Stick with POF or SCAR17. Lightweight, low recoil expensive. I don't want a cheap rifle to protect my life.
Iv had no issues with my rifle cycling with any ammo Iv tested. Both suppressed and un suppressed. I am doing more testing suppressed so that could change but so far no issues. Iv read and seen videos about people having issues but I haven’t had any.
I like RUGEF and own several of their firearms BUT I'll take the SIG 716 with its short piston over the RUGER direct impingement. DI, especially in a larger cartridge like the .308/7.62 x 51 will get the bolt HOT after one 20 round magazine. DI is DUMB1
Sig is a 308 so 300 is a min range should be hitting at 400-450 normal and 500 plus very doable everyone has had their expectations lowered with 556 almost of course unless you’re a marine
whats crazy is with all the new tech we have an all the modern bullets a friggin brown bess flint lock still beats the modern gun even the 20 inch 308s ... pitiful
If i wanted a light rifle id shoot my 556 in a ar plateform idk if its my American speaking but sometimes i just want a big rifle in a big caliber and for hunting you use a bolt thats the thing no gun does everything
I wanted the Sfar bad. Loved it. Couldn’t wait to get one. Then I read all the reviews. Then I went to the store and compared them side by side. There is no comparison. The Sig all the way. Quality. Build. Reliability. It was worth the few extra y
Sorry I don’t trust the Ruger SFAR. No AR-10 style rifle has holes drilled into the upper receiver we’re the bolt locks to the barrel, like the Ruger has. Were upwards of 50k psi is going off in front of your face. I will take the SIG.
Thank you mr. Wretch, this was definitely an eye-opener for me. Here in my country (Denmark) we are only allowed to own one semi automatic, centerfire rifle, and it has to be chambered in a cartridge that is legal for what is classified as "class 1 game" (meaning red and fallow deer, and wild boar) - energy at 100 meters must be at least 2000 joules (so basically .243 Winchester is the cutoff). This means I cannot own a semi automatic 5.56 or 7.62x39 rifle, but I can own one in .308/7.62x51. My local store has the SIG 716i TREAD and the S&W M&P10 in stock, and they will be getting the Ruger SFAR home in both 16" and 20". As the Rugers are by far the cheapest, I was looking for videos informing me exactly how much worse they are - but I am pleasantly surprised to see your video. My conclusion being that I can probably get a fine rifle for a lower price. I can see that you have the 16". In your opinion, would the 16" be the better rifle, if we consider the fact that I can only own one semi automatic rifle? I will be mounting a A-TEC Optima Flow, and that will of course add to the overall length. It will probably end up wearing a Schmidt & Bender 1-8x24 Exos. Thank you in advance.
Exactly what I experienced, went from 3 to 4 inches at 100 yards to less than 1.5. Mine is picky on ammo choice, Hornady Superformance Match 168g works best.

What bullets work best with your Ruger SFAR? This question is for everyone that has the Ruger sfar.
I am using Hornady 168GR ELD match. Haven't any problems with it.
Either the Hornady 168gr A-Max or the Nosler 168gr HPBT. Check out my ammo test video for more details.
Mine shoots anything after I polish the feed ramps! It shoots 150 grain steel ammo 168 grain 178, 125 , no issues! Did have issues before I polish the feed ramps!! My loads except for the steel ammo!!
Glade I came across your channel! You do an excellent job going into detail.
Been considering between both and thank you for this.
I was having issues also with my SFAR polish the feed ramps!!!! No issues now! Use jewelers rouge and a dremel!
@@gregstone8891Did you have to remive the barrel?
Because freedom that’s why 🤷♂️ it’s their rifle they can do as they please 🤷♂️

Wow I get moa groups all day with mine but I installed a geissele ssa-e trigger. Mine seems to favor 168 gr bullets.
What hand guard do you have on your SFAR? Did you mill out a notch for the ejector cover hinge pin?
I've be very tempted to pick up a SFAR. I know some have had ejection issues. Did you experience that?
So im looking at the SFAR, not sure if there is an advantage to getting the 20" vs 16"?
Hi, amazing review! Question for you. How were you able to get the Rugar with the full picatinny railing?
Thanks! It’s a Midwest Industries Combat rail.
I got the 20 inch Ruger SFAR
I own the SFAR now im here because im thinking of picking up the sig
You and me both. I’m considering keeping mine now. I’ve only had issues with cheap saltech ammo. Runs great otherwise.
How is the interchangability of the bolt carrier on the ruger? I don't have any experience with the AR 10's and the difference between the parts vs Ar 15's.
The bolt is proprietary. Which sucks and they don’t sell replacements at this time. AR-10s are confusing.
@@TheBeardedWretch That sucks, I have a couple of ruger MPR's that rock. I was looking to get a SFAR but I'm not sure about the bolt.
@@ungratefulpeasant8085 the MPRs do rock 🤘
I also have both the ruger and the Sig.. if I could only buy 1 … that’s hard because they are 2 totally different guns IMO. But I would go with the Ruger .. I payed like 1500 for the Sig and 1000 for the ruger. You can take that 500 extra bucks and spend on a optic and sling and maybe a few boxes of ammo. The trigger on the sig need to be replaced. I really like the 716i but I would say I love my SFAR
I also agree that the Sig feels like it would live with a high round count … the SFAR I don’t believe can take a really high round count
100%
Thanks! its a great gun! Ill check it out!
How did you get the pic rail on top for your tape switch?
I have a Midwest rail installed not the factory one.
@@TheBeardedWretch oh that’s right, thank ya!
Thanks for the vid. I have a M1a scout but I like to hear about the .308 AR platforms.
great video hey whats your 2cents on scopes for this rifle i wana shoot 100yard to 1000yard any recommendations
A 6-24 would be good. I got a Vortex Diamondback 6x24 on one of my bolt guns and it works well at range.
What about the multiple reports of the SFAR not cycling.
Iv had no issues with my rifle cycling with any ammo Iv tested. Both suppressed and un suppressed. I am doing more testing suppressed so that could change but so far no issues. Iv read and seen videos about people having issues but I haven’t had any.
Love my SFAR after break in 200 rounds no problems at all!!
I like RUGEF and own several of their firearms BUT I'll take the SIG 716 with its short piston over the RUGER direct impingement. DI, especially in a larger cartridge like the .308/7.62 x 51 will get the bolt HOT after one 20 round magazine. DI is DUMB1
Wondering why the POF Revolution wasn't mentioned in this.
Why would it be? Its a video about the Ruger vs the Sig.
Simple, the Ruger is almost a direct copy of the POF design. The Sig isn't. @@5jjt
The stock SIG trigger is not my favorite. Try an upgrade.
Sig is a 308 so 300 is a min range should be hitting at 400-450 normal and 500 plus very doable everyone has had their expectations lowered with 556 almost of course unless you’re a marine
whats crazy is with all the new tech we have an all the modern bullets a friggin brown bess flint lock still beats the modern gun even the 20 inch 308s ... pitiful
In my opinion, my ruger trigger is too good ( very light 2lbs)
Just found your channel. Enjoyed the video. 🙏😀💕
You goy to find each rifles favorite ammo if your chasing accuracy...you have to pay for accuracy
If i wanted a light rifle id shoot my 556 in a ar plateform idk if its my American speaking but sometimes i just want a big rifle in a big caliber and for hunting you use a bolt thats the thing no gun does everything
Hornady black, or ELDM?
I wanted the Sfar bad. Loved it. Couldn’t wait to get one. Then I read all the reviews. Then I went to the store and compared them side by side. There is no comparison. The Sig all the way. Quality. Build. Reliability. It was worth the few extra y
I think the group is not depend on the gun, it's depend on your constitution of the day.
Sorry I don’t trust the Ruger SFAR. No AR-10 style rifle has holes drilled into the upper receiver we’re the bolt locks to the barrel, like the Ruger has. Were upwards of 50k psi is going off in front of your face. I will take the SIG.
SIG 716i
Thank you mr.
If you put a new trigger on that Sig all your accuracy issues would disappear.
Exactly what I experienced, went from 3 to 4 inches at 100 yards to less than 1.5. Mine is picky on ammo choice, Hornady Superformance Match 168g works best.
Would the SFAR do well enough in a heavy duty military environment to be selectable by the army ? Would people trust their lives on it ?
You didn’t watch the video obviously
Absolutely not.
How reliable has the Ruger been
Besides the Freedom ammo messing it up it’s been 100% reliable.
@@TheBeardedWretch I am looking for my 1st rifle not in 556, and I have been looking at 308 or 300 blackout. And I don’t have a lot of money
@@mma709 i would recommend 308 over 300blk unless you have a suppressor. 308 is generally easier to find ammo wise but both are not cheap to shoot.
Shop around, I found mine for a grand whereas every other place I looked it was just over 1100 or more.
@@dodgeboy90501 so far in my area everyone is sold out
The Ruger hands down is better
Lol
So what you're telling us is you can't deal with a seven and a half pound trigger.
A lot of people hate heavy triggers, I can't stand anything over 5lbs
Sig is a sob for making badass guns but then making it a coin toss whether you get a good one
Thinking about getting the SFAR. How would u rate this rifle on a scale from 1 to 5? I've heard it's had issues and alot of the parts suck. Clue me in fellas
Windham arms works with pof save your money an just buy a bush master
audio is terrible low
SFAR is one of the worst AR10s on the market... this review was basically just "choose the cheapest option"
How many rounds did you put thru it?
@@dariuswilliams7509 Zero, because it isn't a good platform. Ruger does not have a good track record in ARs, and my armorers advised me against being one. They said "if it is all you can afford, it is better than not having one"
There is so much negative write up about Ruger SFAR problems I would not touch one with a 10 foot pole. Ruger as lost its reputation with this gun.
One is Ruger. One is Sig. That decides it right there for me.
tried watching but sound quality, nope
That’s to bad 😢
