When I first got my hands on the Ruger SFAR, I thought it was an AR15, but to my surprise, it was chambered in .308, but how?
It was small and so lightweight there was no way this is a .308 rifle.
After my initial shock, I immediately thought, “oh yeah, this thing is going to suck to shoot because of how lightweight and small it was.
Let me tell you; I couldn’t have been more wrong.

#308 #ColionNoir
Ruger does a fine job making affordable, well-built weapons. I manage a gun store, and Rugers are some of our top sellers. Kudos to Ruger
Picked our son up a Ruger Mark IV target pistol for Christmas & even my FFL was impressed with the quality of it. This 308 is now on my list as I don't have one in an AR platform & even a big box sports store shows them at $1099.
I own a lot of Rugers and they make great stuff.
My ruger mpr is a go to for range days.
I’m a Glock guy but I like all ruger rifles.
I have had to send a couple new ones back for a little tweaking but they came back fast and right
I bought one and really like it. Forgot to mention that the 20" version has full top rail, the adjustable gas block and the gas ports. It does shoot like an AR-15 with the range and knock down of an AR-10. I changed the charge handle to a Giessele to get something bigger and to an H2 buffer weight.
Nice!!!
20" would make a damn fine DMR platform. And now I'm gonna have to buy another magnified optic now.
Does it use AR-15 parts (trigger, grip, stock, etc)?
@@armynurseboy Yes, all those parts.
* drools * I was hoping there was a 20" version.
Bought one. Been shooting it. Absolutely love it. My favorite rifle.

How much and where did you get it?

Paul I just bought one today and it says on their website 308-762 but on my rifle itself is stamp 762 on it is it capable of shooting 308 safely?
After seeing this video I purchased this rifle. I couldn’t be happier. I was a AR15 556 for a tactical guy. Now I see the benefits of a larger caliber especially in this platform and what it can do. I gifted my M4 to the wife.
What twist rate is it ?
@@RTM459 the ruger is 1:10 twist
Sounds exactly like the thing I might do when Ruger SFAR is imported in my country. :)
That's a whole lot of full-power smackdown in small package. I fired a Galil in 7.62 NATO and the recoil was brutal. You'd expect such a light rifle to kick more, but it doesn't. Now I HAVE to get one.
Honestly, the recoil isn't bad at all, and after I fired 100+ rounds my follow up shots were almost as fast as a 556.... almost, lol.
I’m going to be flat broke if this keeps up. Now I’ve got to get one of those.
I agree...I mean I'm already broke and I need this. Lol
That's why I love that my LGS does layaway.
Already called the Cabelas near me to see if they had any in stock. Bass being the next place I'm checking.

I have the MPR and the SFAR. They both rock! Zero malfunctions in either with over 2000 rounds in the MPR and 1000 through the SFAR. Varying ammo and weights! ❤️ these firearms!!!

@@7996hobguy AR-10 was 1955, AR-15 in 1957. Production started the years you listed though.
@@7996hobguy seems logical, being that, didnt the AR-10 replace the M14 which fired the .308 round ? I think they downsized to the 5.56 so that solders could carry more rounds into battle, and shipping more rounds in the same amount of space to the solders. same reason they went to the .308 from the 30-06. been a minute since I was in the infantry, and seems like we had a very short briefing in a training session, on the history of the instruments we evolved from using.
Colion, I love you and hate you at the same time 😂. Damn it, I watched this video 3 times and I couldn’t go to sleep for 2 days straight. The joy I saw coming from you shooting this damn rifle made me insanely impulsive. I drove to TP Outdoors and asked them if they had the SFAR in stock. They only had the 20” so I justified to myself to just leave. I was like Yeah, I escaped that one. Went back couple of days later to get some Drake wool socks and happened to walk back to the gun counter and Mark screams, “hey Joe, we got a 16” in this morning”. Let me see it, I bet I won’t like it. As soon as I took it out of the box I knew I’d F up. That sucker is EVERYTHING YOU SAID IT IS. It’s light, trigger is amazing out of the box and I had to double check to make sure it wasn’t an AR15. Price tag was $1,099.00. Owner said give me $1,000 and it’s yours. I drove straight to the house and dug into my hidden stash (from the wife) and pulled out the money. Headed straight to the store and walked out with it. I’ll be divorced by this weekend if she finds it. Just got back from shooting it and Holy Crap is this thing unbelievable. Guys, if you can afford to spend the money go get one. I have no idea how they put this together and tweaked the components but this gun shoots like my DDM4 V7Pro. The only thing that hurts about this gun is checking out at the register when you purchase the ammo. The ballistic tip ammo is almost $60. Anyone know where to get a deal on .308 ammo? I need to get some because once you shoot this thing you don’t want to stop.
72 cents a round at Palmetto Armory for standard and 85 cents a round for black tip nylon.
Target Sports USA can be a good source for ammo if you are patient.
Awesome review. You can't fake that kind of joy. I want one now
Frank I picked up on the same thing in the vid. His laugh said it all. You can’t fake some things.
I got the first 20” SFAR that my local gun store had in stock. Took a deer with it just a few days ago and I absolutely love it!
Thats what i purchased mine for, Got a Midwest T series rail, and a A2 stock

Great review. Been thinking of picking up a bolt action 308 because living in NY we aren’t allowed to buy an AR10. I think it is time to leave especially with the Hochul win.
Yes definitely bro. I grew up in NY and never seen such a messed governor in my life! Loving the free state of Florida right now
I can never understand people who want to drop their entire lives and leave all their family and friends just because they want to shoot more guns.
Like, I like guns, but I dont get it. That doesn't seem worth it at all.
Held one today at my FFL, the only way you can tell it's 308 is the muzzle brake and the mag well. Other than that it's small just like an AR-15
It is an AR-15 chambered in .308, just like the POF Revolution and Rogue series that inspired it.
Ruger added vent holes through the barrel extension, upper, and bolt carrier in the event of a case failure, since the diameters are so small (same as AR-15).
@@LRRPFco52 it is an AR-15 , I use the term "small just like an AR-15" for a size comparison ,hard to believe how compact it is until you get one in your hands. Even takes Ar15 Charging handle and after market handguards. 👍
@@LRRPFco52 that doesn't exactly inspire confidence. @ least not for me anyway. 762 AR's are typically built beefier for good reason/s.
@@nova68cutie They're using exotic Aerospace alloys on the bolt and barrel extension to handle the pressure, but there are definitely case failure mitigation features built into it. A side effect of the pressure relief holes is that they vent suppressor back pressure ahead of the ejection port.
Literally a gun for the people. Light no frills just simple good shooting and something to build on. Would definitely consider this for my first .308

It’s always fun when you see a firearm bring the reviewer genuine joy not just the “yeah this is good” or other thoughts.
I was just thinking to myself that I might need something bigger than 5.56 on the homestead - not because of long range just the sheer density of small branches and thick trees that could deflect a lighter bullet like 5.56. Just swap the brake out for my can and it would be perfect and not antagonize everyone at the range too.

Okay. Okay! You sold me. I'm getting one. I thought about the M1A CQB for quite a while. Just when I made up my mind to get one, along comes this beauty. Thanks.
Don't be foolish and jump at it, you need to get more information on if it is accurate or not. Somethings can't be fixed and Ruger has a reputation for beautiful accuracy in all they're both actions, but none of their self shockers have ever been accurate
Just brought my brand new SFAR to a range today. When I picked it up for the first time not knowing what it was, it was lighter than the M16, while being a 308 (I wanted a 308 cause why not). When I got on range the older gentlemen around me were like "Why is this ar15 so loud? Why is it ejecting these rounds so far?" I was then told it "Ejects with authority" My first round made me really giddy as it was my first time shooting 308 from a rifle. I love it.
That giggle when your shooting this thing has me sold. I want one now.
Just zeroed in my 2 new SFAR. Will do 1 MOA at 200 yards , has low recoil, weights 18 oz less than a SW MP 10 . Cost is also decent , half the cost of some other older AR10
I just realized that I ordered this rifle a few hours after this video dropped, due to your joy with it. I've got mine configured with a TA31-ACSS in Green, a BCM Mod2 grip, a BCM short vertical grip, a BAD ambi safety, a Strike Ind. ambi mag release, a Geisele maritime bolt release, a Limbsaver recoil pad, a YHM flash hider/suppressor mount, a Streamlight 1k lumen light, a Magpul bipod qd stud, and a VTAC padded sling. I have a Magpul bipod and a Form 1 supressor off rifle in my kit. This thing lighter than my SPR, and only a 8oz heavier than my simularly equipped 14.5 GP rifle. I'm really loving this rig with 400rds in so far. The Limbsaver mitigates the recoil-reduction I lost by taking the brake off, and only adds +1oz...highly recommended for this rifle! I'm leaning toward picking this over my AR15 GP rifle as a prefered patrol rifle! 👊🏼🇺🇲👊🏼

@@Wolfe-zl4ld edit: nevermind, I see from your history that you're an anticonstitutional, anti-gun troll.
I've always been a fan of the 308, because it's a more versatile round, and there's whole lot of 308 out there. When H&K first introduced the model 91 myself and my partner went down to a gun shop in the city of Carson in the LA metro area and purchased consecutive serial numbers. I felt that it was by far the best bang for buck at the time, but it did have one issue, it's weight the rifle weighed in at 9.3lbs unloaded and at first it didn't seem that bad, how ever after taking a little 20k walk with a pack, and up and down hills and through the brush it was like it magically increased to a 40lbs weapon ( also my partner was a Marine Corp reservist and showed me just out of shape I was) other than the weight I loved that rifle, even the factory iron sights were spot on up to 400m, and with the bigger bullet what you aimed at it hit. One of the biggest things about the AR-15 that I didn't like was the lack of penetration and the fact if you were shooting through brush the 223 would hit a small branch or some leaves and who knew were that round went. Also if you were in situation where you had a standard vehicle ( car, p/u, van ) the 223 would take 3 to 4 rounds in the same spot to penetrate and even that you would be basically shrapnel and it be the 6th or 7th round before it would be a full bullet making it through.
However with the 308, boom that was it through the windshield, through the bad guy, through the seat front and back seats and into the trunk, and depending on the type of vehicle it could go all the way through.
Now I have to admit that the tech has changed a lot since the early 80's in regards to the different weapons, the ammo and the different accessories, have brought about a lot of changes over the years and the AR-15 does have a lot of good points ( but people don't remember or realize that the 223 was a round ment to wound not kill because of the Roe's and thinking of the great brain's in the crystal palace) in my opinion the 308 or as it's also known as the 7.62 x 51 is a far more useful round. And now a 308 that's light and balanced and affordable that sounds like they hit the trifecta. Besides this guy is having way to much fun with that firearm, like a kid that got just what he wanted for Christmas.
🦅🦅🗽🦅🦅😎😎😎🐈
@ Going Fubar, all true.
I think the (lack of) barrier blindness ar15s get labeled with is due to bulk 55gr ammo and short barrels. Paul Harrell had no issue defending himself with an ar15 through a windshield with iirc 3-4 rounds.
Love my Windham RSF 16 .308. 16" barrel, 1 1/2" groups at 300. Built as my everything rifle. 7.5 lbs undressed
I’ve been looking at this one since it launched. Held one last month at a local gun show and really liked the way it felt. But after watching you laugh so much while shooting this bad boy it’s definitely at the top of my wish list. 😂
My first ever Ruger was a P89 and I had lots of fun with that 9 mm. I can't wait to get this .308 AR.
my very first handgun was a p 89 with the dual calibers {9mm 30 luger} almost 28 years later still have it, never a single issue
I have a stainless P89. It will outlive all of mankind.
Sounds great but would like a thorough "affordable" AR10 comparison video... include POF Rogue 16.5 inch as it is 5.9# and comes in at $1500 compared to SFAR 16.1 in barrel at 6.8# for $1200... The AR10 Springfield Saint is 7.8# and $1300.
POF Revolution DI & v-seven weapons systems 16” .308 are both around 6lbs 10-12oz. Do a head 2 head to head comparison. Accuracy, durability(500rd burn down in under 10minutes).

Ruger has been stepping up their game lately.
Some great news guns in the last couple of years.
Ruger has always been ready to playball!
POF Rouge is more expensive than $1200, but I think it is the lightest AR .308. The POF Revolution was the first gun in this AR .308 format, 6.8lbs for a DI version, and 7.3lbs for a PD version. This Ruger SFAR looks promising, hopefully it's made of durable materials like the POF's are. The Ruger is certainly in a more affordable price range, so it will be interesting to see how this gun does in the long-term.
The 16.1" SFAR is also 6.8lbs. POF is a legit platform too. I went with the SFAR, personally. Trying it out to 780 yards this weekend. We'll see if I can get some miracles to happen. :-)
@@ForceMultiplier Let me know how that works out, and have fun.
I totally agree with everything you just posted.
In my opinion the POF is one of the most innovative companies out there building ARs, even though they are expensive, they are top of the line.
I wish that I had gotten it rather than the Sig Sauer P716. I would still love to have one but the Ruger, as long as the quality is there at a much lower price range will be a fabulous option for people like me on an extremely low budget.
The POF Rogue is 5.9lbs for the 16.5” and 5.6lbs for the 12.5”
@@kimdearrington258 I looked at the 716, particularly because of the price, and recommendations from a couple of friends that own them. I was set on buying 716, but when I went to the gun store, they also had the Revolution PD. I didn't know much about the POF, but comparing the two, handling them, I was leaning POF. I left the store without either, did some homework that night, and went back next day to get the POF. They offered me 5% off... Still $1000 over the 716, so I'd say I really liked the gun. It shoots great, 335rds though it so far. The brake is obvious to people on either side of me, but it's very effective in the mitigation of recoil. If I could not afford the POF, I'd like the 716 just fine. The SFAR wasn't available at that time, it would be worthy of checking out. I think it's cool that Ruger built this gun, and made it affordable to many. I wonder what the bolt is made of... Hell, I wonder the same about the POF. The wall around the lugs is pretty thin, but they have been around for awhile. Regular AR-10 bolts are beefy in comparison to POF, I really want to get a look inside one of these Rugers.
I'm curious how it runs suppressed but I would love to do a RECCE build with this. The lightweight platform with a cartridge that can go harder and longer than 5.56 is a nice balance. Other than that, this actually seems like a .308 you can fight with and I love that. Great job Ruger!
A gun channel called beyond seclusion did a review with it suppressed. Look his video up, did distances out to 500 yards. Great video review
My thoughts exactly
They have an adjustable gas block... and porting to prevent overgassing... this was a consideration in the designing
@@lanceward3352 There is no porting on this rifle. You’re probably thinking of the muzzle brake which would be removed when attaching a suppressor.

Ive owned several lightweights AR pattern 308s. All of them required my additional investment in tuning. I've owned RevDI, Rogue, DPMSG2. One thing you will see is more fractional settings in the gen2 agb. There should be a 2.25, 2.5, 2.75 setting on their agb. 2, 3 is course for the range of 308 cartridges. 308 is a wide variety cartridge. 2 MOA is acceptable for a 16in AR308. Go research 16in 308 barrel harmonics. 16 is a very short distance to get high precision. 2MOA is good 👍. I suggest people wait for gen 2. I'll be getting rifle length gas 20in.

The compensator looks a lot like the one on the Galil Ace in 308. Significantly helps to mitigate the recoil.
I just purchased one of these today along with the vortex strike eagle 1*6*24 I love it
Call me crazy but I don't consider a gun until CN reviews it. Glad to see Ruger putting out quality products. Thank you.
I have the same, but it's a Bushmaster. 16-inch Barrel, 308. Love it...
A Mk 214 and M1A SOCOM 16 are both louder and heavier: This looks intriguing!
Told myself it's time to upgrade to a308. Was looking at a M1A yesterday. Now here you come with this. The way you was shaking in the 1st montage of shots had me sold.
Now this is the kind of rifle you get to keep 308 relevant now. Still would love to see this in 6.5 Creedmoor though.
Barrel swapping to 6.5 isn't hard
It's coming. Expect the reveal at SHOT.
@@kerbalairforce8802 The barrel extension is specific to the SFAR; not compatible with standard AR308 barrels.
6.5CM through a 16"pencil barrel, what a waste! At that point save money and just punch paper with .223.
@@Skyomen The SFAR also comes in a 20" barreled version...
Cool video!
You definitely appear quite giddy! 😄😁
While the light-weight AR-10 sounds very interesting, I'm staying with my STAG 10 Marksman. I don't plan on humpin' around the woods with it typically, but if I need to, it will have a BFG padded sling. 😉😎
I missed this video, but I went and picked this rifle up yesterday!! Appreciate you Colion!!!!
Does anyone know about the accuracy of this rifle. Sometime it’s sacrificed for lightness but Ruger’s are at least acceptable in accuracy.
I have the 20 inch. Bought it from Cabela's. They price matched Buds gun shop at $1005. They gave me 5% off with the price match policy. Then another 5% for military discount. Now I'm at $900. Used their gift cards - I bought $900 of cards for $810. 20 inch SFAR cost me about $860 incl tax. So great deal but while fit and finish is awesome - It would only cycle on gas setting 3. They sent me a gen 2 gas regulator and its now cycles on setting 2. Oh - sub MOA with good ammo. Only upgrade was a $20 3/4 butt pad replacement from magpul.
I have the Ruger SFAR and I love it and it has performpreformed flawlessly!
Curious what ammo your gun likes?
6 months later, how is it holding up? Can you do a follow-up video of this rifle please?
👍🤣 You sold 1 for Ruger 8/26/2023. Now I wish I had one of Roger's engineers numbers to talk them into a 25" 243 and 7mm-08 5R barrel with a target crown...lol
Wonder how this compares to the Springfield Saint Victor .308. I have one with the same Vortex optics he has on the Ruger and its pretty darn light with the mag empty.
I have a Victor in .308 and it has similar size, weight, and value. The problem with shooting .308 is the cost of ammunition, depending on brand and volume the .308 is like $2 a pop, compared to .223 for like $0.55 a pop. Hopefully ammunition prices will drop some day.
POF has been doing this for a few minutes already, theirs is .6 lbs lighter if you go with the DI variant (rogue). Revolution (gas piston) weights 7.3lbs
Rogue 5.9 pounds
That's true. Thanks for the shout out.
@pofusa I wanted a pof rogue pistol to match my rogue ar10 rifle but commie atf needs put in the ground.
I always liked the AR10, Always said light versions are possible if it was intentionally done like that from the beginning instead of trying to lighten it up backasswards after it's made.
ArmaLite developed a smaller frame AR-10 called the AR-10A in 1959, which was transferred to Colt with the sale of the Stoner patents. Colt began tooling up to produce the AR-10A, but multiple foreign armies were ready to start placing orders for AR-15s, so Colt's promoter for the ArmaLite rifles wired them a message to stop tooling for the AR-10A and start tooling for the AR-15 instead. Rest is history.
@@LRRPFco52 Yeah, I remember about that. But what I was referring to was today's production practices. I still have the Armalite AR10T that I got back in the 90's, it's still my most common favorite version because they designed both receiver halves as efficient forgings instead of from milled extrusions which tends to be bulkier from leaving a lot of metal to save machining time.
@@Oldhogleg Totally different ArmaLite companies. The original ArmaLite was a division of Fairchild Aerospace in Hollywood CA. Their name got acquired by Elisco Tool & Machine long after the Stoner patents were bought by Colt in 1959. The only production AR-10s back then were made by the Dutch, with several contracts for Sudan and Cuba.
Eagle Arms of the 1990s bought the ArmaLite name from Elisco, and re-branded themselves as ArmaLite Inc. That’s when they made the AR-10B and AR-10T that ran on modified M-14 mags. My first AR-10 was actually an EA-10T from that era.
The Eagle Arms ArmaLites are SR-25s that take M-14 mags. Karl Lewis and David Doerbeck used an SR-25 upper receiver to do the initial testing with their lower receivers that would take M-14 mags, with an AR-style mag catch hole cut in the mag bodies.
To make it more confusing, the new ArmaLite Inc. introduced an AR-10A that ran on SR-25 mags around 2010 if I recall. I saw it at SHOT when they revealed it, and that’s basically their new standard. The new AR-10A uses their large receiver set, while the original 1959 ArmaLite/Colt AR-10A used a very small receiver set like an AR-15. It’s the most unknown AR-10 variant in the history of AR-10s, along with some of the Dutch 16” carbines and sharpshooter variants of the early 1960s.
@@LRRPFco52 Yeah, I already knew all that over two decades ago, just simply making a comparison of what others were doing. Largely because there's no "real" official AR10T pattern, so everyone and his brother by and large were doing their own patterns.
I like shooting AR-15 platforms, but I fell in love after shooting a couple rounds through my Ruger SFAR. I can't take it anywhere without a crowd circling around in excitement.
I bought a Stag 10 a few months before this came out. I have long been a Ruger fan and had this have been out for sale then, this might have been a serious contender at the time. No disappointment on the Stag though either.
Stag 15 in 5.45x39. No complaints. 💪💪👍👍🔥🔥
Stags cost to much now. They used to be quite affordable. Then again i suppose you could say that about many things now.
@@iowa_lot_to_travel9471 762/39.. Nice.
POF did this first. I have one and love it. I will be checking out this Ruger.
Thank you James
I'm waiting to see some long-term reliability reviews on it, and if it passes the test, I'M ALL IN.
It’s a ruger, I think they have a pretty good track record that you can trust.
@@guins99 I agree. Their revolvers especially. They're fairly new to the AR game though. Brand New to the AR 10 game, and that's a more finicky system with different tolerances than 5.56. Springfield has a good reputation. So does Remington. I've had total LEMONS from both companies (especially Remington after they split and became a conglomerate).
Looks like a great companion for my SR-762. My SR-762 is great for stationary bench shooting but too heavy long range sessions shooting from the shoulder. Always enjoyed every Ruger that I have owned.
I love having a SR 762 but not very packable. This looks like a good option.
Stating the weight of the rifle fully loaded would be nice. Keep up the great work,
7.5 lb per spec sheet
@@tsusai But that’s stripped, NOT fully loaded (Optics and Loaded 25-30 rds. , Right?)
colion isnt really a specs guy if you want a light rifle get a ar15 in 6mm arc with magnesium same thing but better and only 4 to 5lbs loaded
@@popinmo Same thing but better? 6mm arc is great, but it ain't no .308.
@@asdfghjk2933 it's better in weight
I recently was looking at the SIG Sauer XM7 in 308 but they wanted $5k for basically the same thing as the Ruger SFAR for $1200 except the SFAR is less than 7lbs compared to just under 9 lbs for the SIG. I can buy the Ruger SFAR, an optic, a sling, ammo and a few extra mags and still come out cheaper than just the SIG alone. I want the Ruger definitely.
Your enthusiasm and spirit is wonderful, looks great, so many firearms I want before the Oregon gun ban goes into effect
Get 'em while the getting is good.
Challenge the gun ban in court. Its unconstitutional.
