That's some good shooting by the way, especially with 3X magnification scope!
I’ll be honest. I was excited to buy this gun. Loved it. Then I started asking around. Reading reviews. A lot of problems with it. For $1200 you shouldn’t have to tweak it and change things to have it reliable. I said screw it and bought a Springfield M1A.

There really isn't a lot out there on this rifle yet, I just got one and am very excited to see if it lives up to the hype I have for it. On paper this thing is in my opinion ground shattering for price and versatility. If it proves to be durable, reliable, and accurate, then I want 4 of them.
Did you only shoot 76 2 x 51 or just 308 because my boy from Turkey opinion had a lot of problems with that firearm. Check his three videos they are awesome much love from Louisville Kentucky
I know your SFAR videos seem to be the most popular so I'd like to suggest a third entry where you compare to an AR-15 to help shed light on some questions about what seems proprietary and what might be cross-compatible. I'm thinking buffer tube length, buffer weight and length, buffer spring length and number of coils, whatever else you can think of. Clearly the barrel nut and handguard are cross compatible.
Great video on the Ruger but I have question about the Mid West Rail you put on the rifle if possible? Can you still get to the gas adjuster with no problems ? I love what you have done so far and I’m waiting on my rifle to come in👍🏾
@@TheBeardedWretch Do you happen to have the old handguard and barrel nut and a scale handy to say what they weigh? Ruger doesn't list a specific weight for the "lightweight" handguard and I'm curious what I might shave off an already light rifle with something else.
8:10 seconds. I was saying after you dropped the mag, don’t forget to charge the weapon. Lol. I see the edit. You discussed the all the Mods I want to do ; with safety selector, trigger, and hand guard. I have Mid west rails but there’s a piece your’s doesn’t have. My rails have a fork shaped piece that sets over the upper and tightens under the set screws. Did you have to leave that piece off? Thanks for the content.
Nice review. I typical sight in to hit about 1 inch to 2 inches +\- high at 100 yds. At 300 yds you should be close to 0 then. Depends on ammunition your using too.
Nice rifle. If i didn't already have a pof rogue, I'd almost certainly pick up one of these. I like the rogue but the ruger seems like a way better value for money.
I feel the same way. I have a pof revolution di and if I didnt already have it I would definitely pick one of these up. I love my pof I just feel this is a great rifle for what you pay.
Keep extra gas rings on hand, it tends to build up carbon in the bolt carrier bore, premium cleaner burning ammunition would probably minimize this also I believe Radian or someone makes a charging handle with slots for suppressor back-pressure relief which might help as well. I have a twenty- inch model which runs very smooth after a six- box ammo brake in period and is very accurate but I did notice the tendency for carbon build up. I broke it in on the #2 gas setting until it would no longer lock the bolt back then went to #3 setting and is running fine.
Between the price, Ruger's quality & customer service AND the fact that it takes AR15 handguards (thanks for being the guinea pig on that BTW) I think this may prove to be a POF killer
Depends on what the gun will be used for. If you’re going to put a bipod and a higher magnified optic in it like a DMR build I’d get the 716 if your wanting a “fighting” rifle that’s light and fast for more close to mid range I’d get the SFAR.
Nice honest video in beautiful countryside. I have been considering purchasing this rifle and your video helps a lot for I haven't even had my hands on one yet. This Ruger seems to offer a lot for the money and we know that they will back it. I especially like it coming with an adjustable gas block for I would be running it suppressed sometimes. if I'm not mistaken the original Ruger hand guard has a access point to the gas block ... are you still able to access it through your new midwest industries hand guard? Thanks
@@TheBeardedWretch Thank You ... I'm still trying to figure out why Ruger didn't decide to offer it in an 18" barrel option since that is considered the ideal length to burn up the powder while keeping the length to a minimum.
Thank you for your videos on this, you are one of the only people to ask and answer some of the questions I've had on this rifle. Do you believe a geissele rail and barrel nut will be compatible with the upper?
No problem glad I could help. If it fits a standard AR15 then it should. The rail I ordered is just a standard AR15 free float rail. Just make sure your inside diameter of the rail you order is the same or larger than the factory Ruger rail.
Hey Bud, I just got this rifle ordered. I have a Vortex 1-6 and a Vortex 3-9 BDM. Which one do you think for plinking/hunting? I feel like the 3-9 is the simplest with a very plain reticle.
My first reaction is to go with the 1-6. but it depends on the ranges you hunt at. Like for where I am at in TN a 1-6 works great because my farthest shot is maybe 300 yards. If your farther than that I’d say go with the 3-9. I ran a 1-8 on my 716i 308 and really liked it.
Hey man thanks so much for leading the way. I just got my 16”, I want to put an aero precision atlas grip, same dimensions as the Midwest. Saw you had to put on Midwest’s barrel nut, was it a pain taking down the regulator and putting it back? Or pretty easy. Thanks so much!
Hey buddy, is there any possible way at all you could weigh what the original Ruger handguard was? So I know what to look for comparatively to save a bit more or at least not go over? I was originally holding off on it because I wanted to get a 13.9 308 and pin/weld my muzzle device but that wouldn't have worked because the suppressor wouldn't fit under the rail and I couldn't cut the handguard either or I'd lose the small picatinny section up front too.
Iv had issues with magpul drums before as well. I had to disassemble the drum and lube it very well to get it to run right. Maybe try that. Could also be the ammo. Just a thought. If it’s doing the same thing with standard mags then I’d definitely send it back. Iv seed another review of the rife and it did similar things as yours.
This gun is really on my radar right now. The only thing that I'm curious about is the amount of recoil of a .308 in a lighter AR 15 gun. Is it hard to re index your target after shooting? I'd expect it to move the muzzle a lot more due to the lighter weight.
Thanks! Yeah I had to take it off to add the hand guard and didn’t have bigger crush washers to put it back straight. Got it fixed now tho haha. Good eye.
I'd be interreated to see what that brass looks like. You mentioned excessive brass build up and the bold didn't want to go forward. Earlier in the video it looked like there was a lot of gas exiting from the ejection more so than from the muzzle.
I only noticed it while shooting the Freedom ammo. It had alot of gas and the brass either shaved off the neck of the cartridge or the rim. I haven’t had that issue with any of the other ammo I have shot.
@@TheBeardedWretch Thanks for the info 👍... I have heard of blow back in the past with certain brands of AR's...I Never had this type of problem 👍😎🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I am curious will an ar-15 upper fit on the Ruger SFAR lower.. I am just curious to see what all will work AR-15 wise with the Ruger Sfar 308 maybe if someone made an adapter to take 5.56 mags then you could just swap uppers and run both 5.56 and 308 that is why I am asking
It’s the same bullet. But loaded from two different companies. So technically it should act the same through the gun. But I do see a little bit better accuracy out of the Hornady over the freedom munitions. I also get a lot more pop primers from the freedom munitions stuff. Which has caused malfunctions.
How were you able to get the dust cover to work with the midwest rail? According to Hop on TFB the rail was too short and the dust cover pin would walk out
I had been wondering how to get the full rail on the 16" without buying it with the 20", thank you for demonstrating. The other question I have not seen answered, is Ruger or anyone else going to make a weight matched muzzle weight for the muzzle break similar to how Ruger supplied a matching weight with the guide gun in 338 Win Mag?
@@damercerterker8176 not conclusively, but judging by Ruger's answer of "do not modify our guns" (hahaha) I am guessing it's common and planning on finding out!
Found it! Jeremiah, These are built on the AR-15 platform. Ruger does not recommend modifying your firearm. Any modification may result in improper function of the firearm. Ruger does not test or recommend aftermarket parts that aren't sold on ShopRuger. Any questions regarding aftermarket parts should be directed to the manufacturer. Thank you for your interest in Ruger.
They are CLEARLY not built on the ar15 platform, but I'm going to build my 8.6 Blk "We have Boombox at Home" with one. Hopefully before Q releases the Boombox.
They ARE designed to use ar15 FCGs, buffer assemblies, and even ejection port covers, so other than BCGs and recievers, you should be golden on replacement parts. That's what makes me so excited about this
How much extra does the new hand guard weigh? I sold my aero m5 build to buy an SFAR and it’s mostly because of the weight difference (I’m not a big dude, my aero had an 18 inch barrel and weighed over 10lbs, which would be fine if I wanted a precision rifle, but I wanted it as more of a BR type rifle). I like your hand guard and if it does not add much or any weight, I may get one.
I have the Combat rail and it weighs 11.4oz. I’m in the same boat. My 716i is perfect for a DMR but for a BR this Ruger is way better. And yes I run Blue loctite on all my screws.
@@TheBeardedWretch to be clear: did it stop walking after you put the loctite on it? Mine did the same (screws were not loose either) and when it walked forward my ejection port cover came loose. Kind of annoying. I put some blue loctite on it but haven’t been back to the range yet. I’m probably going to get Midwest industries rail as well, but In The meantime I want to make sure it’s not going to move forward again with the screw lock on it.

There really isn't a lot out there on this rifle yet, I just got one and am very excited to see if it lives up to the hype I have for it. On paper this thing is in my opinion ground shattering for price and versatility. If it proves to be durable, reliable, and accurate, then I want 4 of them.
That's a good job Bro. This rifle is beginning to peak my interest 🤔
Did you only shoot 76 2 x 51 or just 308 because my boy from Turkey opinion had a lot of problems with that firearm. Check his three videos they are awesome much love from Louisville Kentucky
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I’m looking forward to getting one. I just got a 3x micro prism for one of my rifles, pretty sweet optic.
Thanks! I really like it as well!
That’s a good idea. I’ll definitely look at doing that!
Great video on the Ruger but I have question about the Mid West Rail you put on the rifle if possible? Can you still get to the gas adjuster with no problems ? I love what you have done so far and I’m waiting on my rifle to come in👍🏾
I've been really curious about aftermarket rail compatability as well. Thanks for being the guinea pig to figure that out.
Glad I could help!
@@TheBeardedWretch Do you happen to have the old handguard and barrel nut and a scale handy to say what they weigh? Ruger doesn't list a specific weight for the "lightweight" handguard and I'm curious what I might shave off an already light rifle with something else.
Will any drop in AR15 trigger group work with the SFAR? Got mine awhile ago and I’m ready to upgrade. Thanks for the video.
Great video! Noticed one of your boxes smoked quite a bit, might consider cleaning.
Thanks! The Freedom ammo iv noticed does that more than the other stuff not really sure why.
Really helpful video and good overall demo. Thank you.
Awesome rifle! I can’t wait to get mine! Nice video. Glad to actually know the ar 15 compatibility… 👍
Thanks!
Thanks for the info!
Thanks! So you used the Midwest barrel nut? Or the original one? a step by step would be appreciated by technical noobs.
Yes Midwest barrel nut. Didn’t need anything special to install went on easy. I plan on doing more in-depth step by step videos in the future. Thanks!
Nice rifle. If i didn't already have a pof rogue, I'd almost certainly pick up one of these. I like the rogue but the ruger seems like a way better value for money.
Thanks! The POF is a very nice rifle. I know a few guys who run them.
I feel the same way. I have a pof revolution di and if I didnt already have it I would definitely pick one of these up. I love my pof I just feel this is a great rifle for what you pay.
Good video quality and thanks for your honesty
Hope they continue to make ARs. The price of my mini 14 just keeps going up in value.
Following progress with this. I just got the 20". Thanks!
Thanks! I want a 20”. Hopefully it comes in soon.
Thanks for the tip and the info!!
Aren’t you supposed to break it in on setting 3 for around 200 rounds first?
@@justbuffering3299 Setting two worked well until it did not lock back then tree worked good
Between the price, Ruger's quality & customer service AND the fact that it takes AR15 handguards (thanks for being the guinea pig on that BTW) I think this may prove to be a POF killer
I was debating between the SFAR and the Palmetto State Armory Sabre. Any thoughts?
Love the setup thinking of getting the sig 716i or this which would you recommend
Depends on what the gun will be used for. If you’re going to put a bipod and a higher magnified optic in it like a DMR build I’d get the 716 if your wanting a “fighting” rifle that’s light and fast for more close to mid range I’d get the SFAR.
Midwest Industries combat rails are amazing
100% agree!
Standard buffer weight with extra-long recoil spring
How is that flashlight holding up right next to that boomer brake?
Nice honest video in beautiful countryside.
I have been considering purchasing this rifle and your video helps a lot for I haven't even had my hands on one yet.
This Ruger seems to offer a lot for the money and we know that they will back it.
I especially like it coming with an adjustable gas block for I would be running it suppressed sometimes.
if I'm not mistaken the original Ruger hand guard has a access point to the gas block ... are you still able to access it through your new midwest industries hand guard?
Thanks
Thanks! You can’t access it from the side like the factory hand guard but I can access it from the front with a 3/16 T handle allen wrench.
How does that muzzle brake not blow up your light?
Hey man thanks so much for leading the way. I just got my 16”, I want to put an aero precision atlas grip, same dimensions as the Midwest. Saw you had to put on Midwest’s barrel nut, was it a pain taking down the regulator and putting it back? Or pretty easy. Thanks so much!
Thanks! It was all very easy as long as you have the proper tools.
Nice video, uncomplex videos are good too. How does that gun light handle living next to the compensator ports?
Thanks! The light works great and is holding up.
Thanks, I have an 20” on order that found online for 1030 shipped. Know looking for a scope and iron sights.
Not a bad price!
I only have about 30 rounds through mine but it won’t lock back and it won’t cycle with the Magpul drum unless it’s on setting 3. Hoping it breaks in.
How was the access to the gas block after changing to the midwest industry rail?
What does the factory handguard weigh and how much weight was added with the Midwest. Guessing it's not a significant difference just curious.
This gun is really on my radar right now. The only thing that I'm curious about is the amount of recoil of a .308 in a lighter AR 15 gun. Is it hard to re index your target after shooting? I'd expect it to move the muzzle a lot more due to the lighter weight.
It’s surprisingly easy to control. It obviously has more recoil than a 556 but very controllable.
Your muzzle break is off center. Thanks for the video. I will be pick one up. New sub 👍🏿
You’re doing great bro keep it up!
Thanks!
Hey BW, I am curious... have you experienced any adverse effects from that muzzle break blowing directly on your Tac Light?
The light still works as it should.
Don't shoot Norma 147. Some of this ammunition has been recalled with loose neck tension. It can destroy self loading rifles.
Good to know thank you!
Didn't know about this. Thank you for the information.
Whoah thanks I almost ordered a shit ton of it the other day I'm glad I didn't lol.
I believe the bolt catch is AR -10 the rest of parts are AR-15
BCM charging handle x3 or the 4x4? Or length? Trying to learn AR got the same rifle
What is the porpose of the holes in front of the ejection port?🤔
Is the light being abused by the muzzle brake?🤔
The ports are to help mitigate extra gas. So if you run it suppressed it doesn’t blow in your face. The light work great and can easily hold up to it.
@@TheBeardedWretch
Thanks for the info 👍...
That won’t work. Magazine wells between the platforms are not compatible.
How about the barre? Does it take standard dpms 308 style barrel or is that proprietary?
Don’t need to reply. Found a comment down below that its proprietary 😢
I am curious about the handguard. You replaced it with a MI handguard, but did you also replaced the barrel nut?
Yes new barrel nut that came with the hand guard everything fit perfectly.
Are you able to adjust the gas block on the fly with the new hand guard?
You mentioned Hornady and Freedom Munitions being the same. Does hornady load that load for Freedom? What is the story with that?
It’s the same bullet. But loaded from two different companies. So technically it should act the same through the gun. But I do see a little bit better accuracy out of the Hornady over the freedom munitions. I also get a lot more pop primers from the freedom munitions stuff. Which has caused malfunctions.
Nice shooting. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you,
Really informative video!!! What is the model number for that Midwest Industries rail? thank you
It’s the 15” combat rail. SKU:MI-CRM15
@@TheBeardedWretch are you still able to adjust the gas system with the MI rail?
How were you able to get the dust cover to work with the midwest rail? According to Hop on TFB the rail was too short and the dust cover pin would walk out
I haven’t had an issue with mine walking out or becoming loose. If that becomes an issue I will definitely throw it in my next video.
Good content. 10/10.
Hey is that flashlight holding up right there? Fierce muzzle blast.
Its doing great! Thanks!!
I'd be curious to know the weight difference on the front rail
My most recent video goes over the weight of a lot of the components on the SFAR and compares it to a 556 AR.
No problem thanks for watching! Hmm I’m not sure I would recommend calling Ruger tho. The customer support was very helpful.
Great practical build bud.
Thank you
You answered a lingering question I had about the handguard! Thank you! Do you have any idea if the barrel is common or proprietary? Thanks again!
You ever figure this out? Im looking at securing one but wanna make sure I can find replacement parts easily!
@@damercerterker8176 not conclusively, but judging by Ruger's answer of "do not modify our guns" (hahaha) I am guessing it's common and planning on finding out!
Found it!
Jeremiah,
These are built on the AR-15 platform.
That's what makes me so excited about this
Nice! I'm looking at the '20.
Love the optic!
Looking at jp 15 key mod hand guard and jp silent capture springs.
You in GA?
Thanks! Nice good set up. Nope I’m in TN.
Hey man great video!
Just wanted to ask if you can attach a link for the midwest industries rail?
Thanks! Link added to description. And here you go.
midwestindustriesinc.com/mi-combat-rail-one-piece-free-float-handguard-m-lok-tm/
Blue loctite to keep it from walking?
I have the Combat rail and it weighs 11.4oz. I’m in the same boat. My 716i is perfect for a DMR but for a BR this Ruger is way better. And yes I run Blue loctite on all my screws.
@@TheBeardedWretch What's the weight of the original Ruger hand guard? Thanks.
@@FilmThePoliceFTP Yes once I put the loctite on it and let it set roughly 24hr it didn’t move again.
