Thank you for your devotion to the sport. I appreciate the fact that you spend your own money on this for our educational purposes. I really like the Ruger SFA and will probably get one. Again thank you.
Don't apologize for the long video! This is useful and chopping it up into smaller "look at how THIS ammo performs...now look at how THIS ammo performs" videos would be difficult to ingest and downright obnoxious to sort through. I finally purchased an SFAR, based partially on what you've showcased. I mounted a Vortex Spitfire 5x to have a lightweight option to get 5x magnification, mounted a lighter buttstock, light and sling and I've been working through the "find the right ammo and hope it likes stuff fit for my needs" problem. This is very, very helpful.
Just picked up my SFAR not too long ago. Waiting to heal from cataract surgery before heading to the range. This is gr8 info for me as a novice to the platform. Thanks for the well vetted info.
Just tried 3 different boxes ammo at 100 yards, shooting rest, with my 20 inch Ruger SFAR. Federal gold medal 185 berger - 3/4 MOA, Hornady SST 168 grain super performance also around 3/4 MOA, and Remington Core-lokt tipped 180 gr which looked like I took a buckshot to the target.................still on setting 3 but i dropped in a 4.6 ounce buffer to reduce the recoil. No cycling issues but brass certainly flew pretty far landing between 4-6 on the clock
I would like to see an accuracy test with a high magnification scope for true accuracy. I really like the SFAR and want one for hunting. But not if it's not accurate with hunting ammo.
Yea I came thinking there was going to be some sort of accuracy testing.. a 2moa dot at 100yds just isn't going to cut it, then shooting for groups all fast like..
Hey Bearded Wretch nice video. Question for you, did you let ur barrel cool down at any point between those different brands? I have a Ruger American 6.5 CM. It can shoot sub-MOA. But, if I don’t cool that barrel down every 12-15 sots, I get a spread like you were getting. I’m interest in the SFAR, but SO FAR there’s been no consistent good news. I’ve had major success running a 16” BSF carbon wrap to keep the temps down. I’d consider one chambered in 308 if/when that SFAR irons out it’s side issues and I can make one appear for me. Again, Nice video.
Hey, man! Mad respect for your videos, and I really appreciate your humility. Constantly reminding the audience that you're not out for proving you're better than anyone or that there's only one way to shoot. You cater to the average shooter, which 90% of us are. Keep it up!
If I was going to spend that much money on ammo for accuracy test I'd put a proper scope on it and take my time letting barrel cool etc. Seems kinda like a waste of ammo
Thanks for the video to help others, with ammo prices the way they are. I have a bunch of hornady 168 grain A Max that my M&P10 loves and I was hoping the Rugar SFAR would like it as well. Putting a thermal on this one for hogs. I will let everyone know how it works on mine when I go site it in.
Great video! Thanks for taking the time (and spending the $) to test and share with us your results…I have had my SFAR since the initial release. I just placed an order for a second one over the weekend…I absolutely love this rifle. I use one for predator hunting (w/ thermal optic). The other will be more devoted to deer hunting and personal defense…The thing I find very interesting is that yours seems to prefer the heavier bullets where mine prefers the lighter (150gr Norma Whitetail). That’s strange since we both have 16” barrel with the same twist rate…Guess that goes to show ya that every rifle is unique…Im kinda hoping the new one I ordered likes the same ammo, because I have a ton of it, but I’m not holding my breath. Especially after seeing yours liking the heavier stuff…One last note - It’s nice hearing that yours is still performing well with that high round count. I know many who have this rifle have not put that many rounds down range and I know long term reliability was a concern for some folks….Thanks again!
What do you mean by long-term reliability? What was the justification for that because the only thing I’ve seen is parts not being tightened down from the factory and any good shooter knows to look over their entire rifle before shooting so that seems more like stupid people who shouldn’t have guns… other than that the regulator issue, which they’re sending out to anyone who is asking for one which fixes the gassing problem
@@mrgrump2534 Many have reported the gun working properly for 1000 rounds or more, then all of a sudden they start having issues. There have also been a lot of folks who have doubts about the durability and ability for such a lightweight gun holding up to the pressures of the .308 cartridge (an example is the single bolt in the gas key).
@@keithwray9942 POF did the exact same thing with the single bolt in the gas key… it has a lifetime manufactures warranty if things goes wrong, so there’s really no need to “worry” 😂 Any gun can have problems at that price point We’re talking about $1000 light weight 308, A.R. 10 …. Anything in that price range I look as a pre-assembled build kit and nothing more!
You need a better optic. For me the PMC Bronze prints at 1.5". So far, the Bronze load prints good out of the SFAR and a Ruger American "Hunter" The Hunter prints slightly smaller groups. So close it doesn't matter.. The SFAR has a 1-8x24mm Sig scope and the Hunter has a 4-16x Sig scope. The PMC ammo is so good that I bought two cases at $1 per shot.
And people are saying the Tavor 7 had accuracy problems, anything can have accuracy problems. I think every gun likes it’s own ammo. Each gun is different. I like the SFAR, I will probably get the 20” model and cut the barrel down to 18”
Great video! You probably saved a lot of people a lot of money in their search for the most accurate ammo for their SFAR. Did you ever consider hand loading? You would save a lot of money in the long run and I bet you would have a sub 1 MOA load worked up in no time. Plus it's fun!
Just out of curiosity...The ZSR ammo you shot, is it Lot 015 like in a few recent videos where the ammo was used and seems to possibly be at fault for blowing up 4 different semi-auto guns? Surprised at the Wolf and PMC, in my 5.56 guns the results are flip-flopped so why such consistency with the Wolf in 7.62. Maybe cold-bore since it went 1st?
Mine is 063 lot. It could be because of cold bore. If I let the gun cool between each group it may have gotten me slightly different results but I dont think they would have been drastically different. But it is a possibility.
Great review! Some of the ammunition you used I get at "Wallyworld" is also accurate in my "old" Ruger SR 762 such as the Federal Bonded 150 grain and the Winchester white box sold as the M80 cartridges at 147 grain....
thanks for your work, it is very important to see the picture on the ammunition. Tell me, did all the tests pass on a regular muzzle brake? at what point on the gas block?
Thanks for the nice info-clip and yes, even though money talks, I hate to send any of it to crooked Putin, on the other hand it's nice to get good hits. is the stuff from Wolf & Co. still dirtier than other ammo as I heard years ago? Take care and shoot safe!
Mine won’t take any soft points without shearing the tip when feeding. Resulting in wild groupings. Hornady superformance SST Suppressed on setting 1 seems to be what I’m getting best results with now. What buffer tube you recommend to reduce recoil. That kick is hard on the thermal optic.
Wow good video. I appreciate that you went through the effort to do this experiment. That is cool that the Wolf ammo did so well. I hate to spend too much on ammo. It gets really expensive. My wife gets pissed whenever I buy more…. Plus the 308 is a more expensive gun to shoot anyway. Party on….
Thank you very much, very useful. During the test, did you manage the light barrel heating? This may have a huge impact and explain some of the very large discrepancies we have observed.
2 other youtubers are having issues with their sfar's which was honestly making me question buying this rifle. But, seeing yours running like a sewing machine puts me back on board for buying one. What gas setting are you on?
I’m on gas setting 2. I have a zero issues out of mine. I do tell people I have a sample size of 1 and to take that for what it’s worth. I have heard both good and bad about these rifles. I would recommend it based off my experience with the rifle.
It’s already been proven that it was the gas regulator valve That was the issue causing cycling issues. I called Ruger and they are sending me out a generation two gas regulator, which opens up setting 2 and fixes the problem… all the other things were just loose, gas, keys and other areas on the gun from quality control but I took mine a part when I got it and torqued everything back down to specifications, so I never had that problem which I do with all my rifles anyway… anybody with half a brain should do that, especially on high-powered rifles
I can’t remember if I brought this up, but I have some Tula I’d be willing to send you to test. Just a disclaimer, I shot 3 rounds out of one box that I think were over charged because it blew a fireball out of my ejection port. I discarded the rest of the box. Rifle is fine. I’ll send you a few boxes if you’re interested. A different box, of course. If you’d rather not because ofmy experience, I understand. I’ve fired a lot of Tula 308 out of my old M&p 10 and my aero build and it was fine out of those, but again, if you’d rather not I understand.
Please, what was your gas setting for this range day? Glad you are getting a consistent experience with your rifle! Excuse my ignorance..did you obtain this SFAR recently, or was it one of the first runs out the door? Hopefully I get my SFAR back from Ruger fairly soon. Going to buy at least a 12x magnification and run that Winchester M118LR service grade again. Did good at 105 yards with only 6x scope.
Setting 2. Mine was one of the first ones. Got it pretty much as soon as it was released. Like I said I got luck with mine because Iv heard some horror stories. Hopefully they get you fixed up.
@@TheBeardedWretch Yeah, got it back...it still has constant hiccups. Is Ruger good for replacing a gun? I had a lemon car once that spun a particular rod bearing three times in less than two years...under warranty, so it didn't cost me anything, yet even the service manager knew I needed a brand new long block the warranty company would only cover a Conrod, piston, and bearings....I don't want to find myself in this situation with a gun. I want a different one, after blowing close to 500 rounds through it.
I just shot a box today of Winchester 7.62×51mm 149 grain m80 full metal jacket with my sfar ruger and it was all over my target at 200 yards using a Tango Sig Sauer 1-6×24 scope.
Do you think it was the scope limiting you or some other factor? My experience with Winchester M80 with this gun at 100 yards was also the least impressive but not bad.
I just took mine out to the range yesterday and out of 4 brands of ammo, that was the ammo that I got 2 fail to ejects from. All the other ammo worked great. Gas setting on 3 as I am still breaking it in.
I hope it helps! Still working on getting better equipment and software so sorry for the bad edits. Yes still running stock. Iv heard of that as well and may try it.
@@TheBeardedWretch okay thanks for the quick reply.... I pick my gun up in 10 days.... I'm going to drop it in and give it a shot..... See if it helps
Bro.....i understand having a 3x for your preferred setup, but if you're going through the trouble of collecting data, please for the love of god just put some more magnification on it. You could go from just aiming for the center diamond to aiming for the very tip of the same corner every time.
I'm honestly shocked this thing will shoot the cheapo steel case stuff, ARs usually hate that stuff. Makes me excited to get my own at some point, I'll be running it with troy irons and some camo fabric tape over the rear of the gas block. I'm thinking about maybe a red dot or an ACOG but I'm trying to keep it a sub 8 pound gun if I can.
Primary arms 5x prism is 8.5 ounces. They are in pre order. Also, I've shot thousands of steel cased ammo through AR15's and AR10's with zero malfunctions.
@TheBeardedWretch My experience has been mixed. So far about 200 round in of mixed 7.62x51 and 308. Will only run on setting 3 with 7.62x51 and was still getting mostly FTF. The 308 would run on 3 and sometimes on 2. I am going to take it out one more time and if consistency doesn't improve, I will call Ruger.
I've been thinking of getting a 308 pattern ar but I have yet to see any thousand or 1500 dollar ar 308 that is accurate as a 400 bolt action rifle Except for a 1500 to 2000 Springfield Armory M1a
probably the 3x optic. Got 1 MOA with Sig Elite 150 Gr. Hornady 168 ELD sub MOA. Have more to try. Using a 20 inch SFAR w/ 32x scope. Still on gas setting 3 as setting 2 won't cycle. Only 30 rounds thru rifle so far
I'm over 200 rounds into my 16" sfar testing. My consistantly puts the first round poa with the next 4 going into 1-1.25" two inches to the right. It also seems to have a fouling issue. Shoots better clean.
Would the ruger SFAR work for hog hunting? I’m normally a daniel defense guy and I have a Springfield loaded M1A but I want another 308 platform for hogs.
Came back to correct my prior comment but I don't see it here so maybe you are moderating your comments. The group I posted was at 50 yards, not 100 yards. Sorry for the mixup.

I think it shot great with the 3 power prism have the primary arms on mine
I just shot a box today of Winchester 7.62×51mm 149 grain m80 full metal jacket with my sfar ruger and it was all over my target at 200 yards using a Tango Sig Sauer 1-6×24 scope.
Do you think it was the scope limiting you or some other factor? My experience with Winchester M80 with this gun at 100 yards was also the least impressive but not bad.
Had the same result yesterday with that ammo at 100 yards. Used a low end Monstrum 1-4x and round were all over the place.
I just took mine out to the range yesterday and out of 4 brands of ammo, that was the ammo that I got 2 fail to ejects from. All the other ammo worked great. Gas setting on 3 as I am still breaking it in.
Federal GMM 168’s.. if it won’t shoot that, I don’t want it.. literally.
#1.... Was looking forward to this..... Some guys say they upgrade to the H2 buffer.... are you still running stock?
I hope it helps! Still working on getting better equipment and software so sorry for the bad edits. Yes still running stock. Iv heard of that as well and may try it.
@@TheBeardedWretch okay thanks for the quick reply.... I pick my gun up in 10 days.... I'm going to drop it in and give it a shot..... See if it helps
@@bkwil6078 please let me know how it works and which one you use.
@@TheBeardedWretch Expo Arms H2 AR-15 Carbine Buffer with Flat Dark Earth Bumper...... 21.95 primary arms
Thanks for this great video.
Bro.....i understand having a 3x for your preferred setup, but if you're going through the trouble of collecting data, please for the love of god just put some more magnification on it. You could go from just aiming for the center diamond to aiming for the very tip of the same corner every time.
Great video!!!
Did you have cycling issues during the "break in" period?
No. The only issues Iv had have been ammo related. It’s been 100% reliable.
I want to see results with 20" barrel.
Try the heaviest load you can find! Bet you'll be surprised 😮
Have you changed out the buffer tube? And which ammo you think is the best? And what setting are you on? Thanks lol
I like the Hornady 168grn Amax and the Nosler 168grn HPBT. Im on setting 2. Factory buffer and tube.
I've been thinking of getting a 308 pattern ar but I have yet to see any thousand or 1500 dollar ar 308 that is accurate as a 400 bolt action rifle
Except for a 1500 to 2000 Springfield Armory M1a
What gas setting were you on for these tests? 3 or 2?
Wasn’t that ZSR blowing up in people’s guns?
Great video and information.
Is it me or did every tighter group have one obvious flyer from the rest. Was that typically your first shot?
probably the 3x optic.
Very good video! Subscribed
Would the ruger SFAR work for hog hunting? I’m normally a daniel defense guy and I have a Springfield loaded M1A but I want another 308 platform for hogs.
Iv used mine for coyotes. I think it would work well. It’s light and accurate.
@@TheBeardedWretch are they accurate?
@@Paratus1179 I’d recommend the 168grn A-Max or the 168 grn Nosler ammo.
Would you buy one again if you had the option, seriously I've seen horror stories so far 🤔
Iv considered buying a 20” SFAR. Iv had no issues out of mine so far and would buy another one.
Super interesting.
Came back to correct my prior comment but I don't see it here so maybe you are moderating your comments. The group I posted was at 50 yards, not 100 yards. Sorry for the mixup.
Thanks! I don’t delete any comments made. But thanks for the correction.
@@TheBeardedWretch I posted a link to a photo so RUclips might have flagged it as potential spam.
Was the Superformance ammo tested?
I’m really wanting to throw a superlative arms bleed off gas block on mine
Every hornady family member does not pronounce it . ‘Horn a day.’ I won’t watch a channel that pronounces it that way. You pronounce it right sometimes lol.
Thank you!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!!
Hornady SF AMMO WAS POPING PRIMERS. TOO MUCH PRESSURE.
I thought you can't shoot 762 in 308 rifle?
Great video
