      @@DrRegisteredNurse May 2020. I was in a better nursing program a year ago. My mom became ill and I became her caregiver so....had to pause nursing school. It was very competitive and organized. I'm very disappointed with this current program. But, I am 48 years old, mom of 6 grown kids and desperately want to get to the NCLEX. I figure this program is my vessel to get me there. My oldest daughter is also a nursing student so we are getting through it together. You are very thorough and explained this in a sensible way. I will be watching for new videos and studying from your others.

    Thank you so much, I was in the medical school before, and until now, I was struggling a way to remember: the way fluids shift. Even though I understood the mechanism behind it and the physiology, I had to rethink about it each time I want to use them. Now, that I came across your very informative lecture, and the tricks you mentioned to remember ( O- stands for Out, E- stands for Enter, and I-stands for inside the blood vessel( or stays in, ohhh and the was you break down everything and gave examples! I am grateful. Thank you so much. I cannot think you enough. God bless you doctor ❤

    Hi thank you for a great video! I’m still a bit confused though, so when the hypotonic solution is administered, water is essentially entering the blood stream which in turn causes the electrolytes to move out of the cell?

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +4

      Hello,
      Hypotonic solutions enter the vessel and the electrolytes shift to the cells and plumps them up. It goes from an area of high concentration to low. There must be a balance at all times between the circulating volume in the vessel and the cells outside the vessel.

      @DrRegisteredNurse  4 года назад +2

      Hi! Let me ask you a thought provoking question that may answer your question:
      1. Is it an Isotonic, Hypotonic, or Hypertonic?
      2. What is the pathophysiology of the fluid classification chosen?
      3. What action does it do?
      Look forward to your response...we will continue this conversation.

    I have a quick question. If D5 is turned into hypotonic solution then why does D5 0.9 NS consider a hypertonic solution? Wouldn't the D5 in the D5 0.9 NS get turned into hypotonic leaving the 0.9 ns, making the remaining solution Isotonic?

    • @DrRegisteredNurse
      @DrRegisteredNurse  5 лет назад +2

      Hi! Thank you for the question. It is a common question asked, so you are not alone. The cell has an excessive amount of solute extracellularly and osmosis is causing water to rush out of the cell intracellularly to the extracellular area which will cause the cell to shrink. The combination of both dextrose and sodium maintains a balance that draws the excess water to be drawn out into the circulating volume, as opposed to shifting out of the vessel. The key is that there is more solutes extracellular, so it will shift through osmosis where there is less. Hopefully I answered your question.
