Great guy. You don't need to be an amazing drummer to have a successful music career. He played basic drum beats but will go down in history as the original drummer of one of the greatest bands of all time
I agree, love his drumming on Bring It On Down. Love that song in general. Maybe he wasn't a highly skilled drummer but he certainly did the job on Bring...
I played the drums for 30 years ( now retired ), and for what it's worth, Tony did a great job on the 1st album. Not a technical drummer for sure, but that was not required. His ability to play in time has been questioned, I disagree . His built in metronome was excellent. As you say Sam, he suited the album ... perfectly... All the best to you.
@@halcyon289 Exactly..he done exactly as a drummer in a band in thst type always does, play along with the bass and keep time!😁..i dont think he would've been able for morning glory it all got a little bit more 'technical' . Respect✊
Tony McCarroll is a really big part of why Definately Maybe is such a unique sounding album. I also love his energy in the early live gigs, especially doing Headshrinker, Bring it on down, Supersonic etc. I don't buy that he couldn't have done the second album.
ycanionlyevafind1sok He couldn’t have played on morning glory, It wouldn’t have sounded the same. Alan is a very creative drummer songs like wonderwall are proof of that.
Mecha Anim they’re just so entertaining, like yeah they were dick but for the most part everything they’d say was the brutal truth, although they did exaggerate the “biggest band in the world” statements. But their personalities and the fact that have have so many great songs in their prime is why so many people love them
@Hugh Jones Yep. That was my point. Maybe I didn't make it clear enough. So many talented people are assholes but we judge their talent by it's self. We don't say "Michael Angelo was a moody prick so that makes him a worse artist." we just know he was a great, genius level artist. Spencer Gregory It's all cos of that goddamn collapse drum fill at the end of "Don't look back in anger" Tony just wouldn't get right and Noel thought "That's it I'm replacing the guy" and being lucky he'd then get famous Steve White's brother Alan. But Tony's still - if not techically better -much more fittin' to Oasis then the ones came after Alan. It's Alan who was too good to be replaced. The other guys had their abilities but they just didn't become part of Oasis.
His book is one of the best music biographies I've ever read, and I've read a fair few. Highly recommended if you're a fan, or even if (like me) you only have a passing interest in Oasis.
He was the drummer on the best album they ever made. I always thought him being kicked out of the band was more a personal thing, rather than his playing.
Tony McCarroll always looked like he was feeling the music and really into it, I really thought he was a great part of the visual aspect of the band also. He just looked like he was always driving the music along in a cool way. I was really disappointed when he was replaced. I would love to see him playing in Liam's band, the guy is quite reserved and genuine it would seem. Very best wishes to you Tony, I really enjoyed watching Oasis with you on the drums. You were cool without ever trying to be.
Tony wasn't the Pete Best of Oasis, he got to play on a massive album, a number one single, the Sheffield Arena, Top of the Pops, and Glastonbury. Chris Hutton is the bloke who really missed the bus
Definitely Maybe wouldn't sound the same with another drummer. Tony did a good job on that. He can always say that he contributed to a classic album. Fair play to him,
Although he wasn't better than whitey, when he says he wasn't the weakest member he is right. It was Guigs by a long shot. He didn't even play his parts in the studio.
Tony McCarroll was the drummer in the best Oasis album. Actually, the band never again had such a powerful backbeat as they did in that album. Granted, he probably couldn't have played on Wonderwall or Don't Look back in anger, but the drumming on Definitely Maybe is magnificent. Listen to Live Forever. Amazing tone, amazing groove.
Disagree about Don't Look Back In Anger. I really can't imagine Tony nailing the entry and fills for a start which need some room to breathe. Listen to his entries into Up In The Sky, Slide Away. Pretty clumsy. Once he gets into the straight ahead rock songs he's great but his bits around the edges are pretty bad. I'd also say that What's The Story in general benefitted from Alan's touch for the lighter more Beatlesy whimsical sound on She's Electric, Cast No Shadow etc. but I agree that I miss Tony on later songs that needed his energy and where Alan made them drag.
Tony could have played on Don't Look Back in Anger, only so much simpler fills. Tony didn't play ghost notes, it was all sheer volume, no subtleties. Alan was all subtleties, ghost notes, and increasingly complex fills, which had its place on Morning Glory. Technically Alan was much better, but Tony was perfect for Definitely Maybe. I agree that She's Electric, Cast No Shadow, and even Champagne Supernova required more Alan's skills. Even rock numbers such as Hello benefit a lot from his fills.
Anyone who says Noel made a bad move replacing Tony is a little mistaken. Tony wasn't technical enough to drum on 'Bring it down' he struggled with it, but did it in the end. There is no way he could have drummed on WTSMG especially songs like Wonderwall (harder to drum than you think with the rhythm and a fancy part in a couple places). He would have then be unable to drum on the big stages like Knebworth. Oasis needed to get in Alan White, but in doing so they lost that spark that Tony brought with his drumming (that made them the 5 lads that they were). The changes needed to be made, but ultimately the band was done by 97' as a World beater anyway. Respect to Tony Mac, he can drum in my band anyday!
@Mister Sifter both. They needed a technical drummer for the records and studio and live they lost that spark and rawness in some ways. Fairly easy to explain tbh
Great drummer and seems like a really good fella. It'd be great to see him, Liam, and Bonehead, plus Guigsy if he's still sane, re-unite and play. Plenty of Liam's songs show theres heaps of potential there.
Ringo Starr has never been a fantastic technical drummer. Neither was Nick Mason. But their styles were perfect for the music of The Beatles and Pink Floyd. Both had tremendous feel for the right sound for the song. Same with Tony in the early days of Oasis, he was vital to the sound and drummed on what most people consider their best album. Can't knock him for that, and Noel is out of order for doing so in the past.
safeeuropeanhome I don't understand how Tony has the nerve to call Liam, someone who has tons and tons of physical fights with paparazzi's, been arrested on several occasions and got banned from an airline called Cathay Pacific FOR LIFE, a GOOD guy and Noel, someone who has NEVER been arrested, or attacked anyone physically, or been banned from airlines for life, a BAD guy.

Anyone who says he wasnt the best drummer in the world should remember that no one in oasis would even make it as a session musician. They are all piss poor as musicians, especially mcuigan. But they had enough about them to make 3 beautiful albums. After tony left it just wasnt the same live.
Noel is a brilliant musician and he probably would’ve worked with music in some way even if oasis hadn’t happened. Bonehead is a capable musician with the right people around him.
hey ronnie, i dont disagree with you but, noel and even other members of O have said several times that they knew they werent good musicians (ng has said several times they sucked, albeit jokingly). my reading of that is they didnt need to be - they just had to be good oasis musicians. they didnt need to be the best musicians, they needed to be the best band - and they were imo. mccarroll got booted because he wasnt a good oasis member. and whitey was (my opinion) more suited for them. i cant speak to their live show because i never got to see them live. actually my last chance to have seen them was at Vfest in toronto (with paul weller), i honestly couldnt afford tickets to that it was really pricey, oasis and weller were the only ones i was interested in seeing. really looking forward to reading this. for some reason... i LOVE how his drumming sounds on definitely maybe. i like that he doesn't overplay. it sounds more tasteful that way imo.
Tony was perfect for Definitely Maybe. Alan was great up until he left. I think they made some good tunes after SOTSOG, but from that DM to that one, they were one of the best bands ever. As a very late fan that's watched every video you can find on here, listened to their albums heavily, and saw Supersonic, I think the band was the best from 94-00. Absolutely mega.
Now after watching this vid and for the first time hearing his side of story and reading comments such as last one by Ricardo Colmenares, I have found respect for this Oasis drummer.
I just finished reading the book and i thought it was great. If you call yourself an oasis fan, then you should definitely read it. Especially if you are interested in reading about how the band got started and what really happened off the stage.
He had his own style. The best track in my opinion remains Cloudburst. He has some great style on this one. Definitely is the most authentic album of Oasis. I loved Alan White, but damn, Tony was the one, he had a smoothy style that really used to fit Oasis's style.

So similar to what happened to Scott Raynor of Blink-182. They don't want the drummer to be too big of a part of the band. They never want the drummer to be a big deal.
Hes a cool lad, well spoken, pretty level headed. Hes aging well, doesnt look burned out or on the piss. Happy for him. I wonder what Guigsy up to these days?
Confused by the controversy !!! ... The track "LIVE FOREVER" is near perfection !!!.... (including the drumming) !!! ... First time listening ..... blasting through cheap speakers in an ERF lorry on Radio 1 ... Even back in the 70's the studios would listen through a small transistor radio before pressing !!! ... I didn't hear the track - THE TRACK HEARD ME
i can highly recommend his book! of course you can't say for sure if everything happened the way he describes it but as many others said before: it really changes your opinion on liam and noel
I agree, as a musician, it's not always technical ability (saying that, Alan White was nowhere near as talented as other drummers of the era, like Sean Moore) but suitability - Ringo wasn't that good but he suited The Beatles. Noel wasn't much of a guitarist either, and wouldn't have got anywhere near any other top bands. It's true what Bonehead says: Liam's voice 'was' Oasis
Interviewer: what did you bring to the band that Tony McCarroll didn’t? Alan White: Time keeping. Say all you want about Tony being on Oasis’ best album and not needing technical chops (all true), but if a drummer can’t keep time they are useless.
I wonder if he got drumming lessons or why he didn't think to get drumming lessons . If you can't do something it's best to learn and keep practicing to improve your self. Don't Let people get you down.
LOVE this guy. Listen to Bring It On Down, Live Forever and Supersonic and tell me he was a shit drummer. I love Oasis with a passion and Noel is undoubtedly a very talented songwriter and musician, he's also a narcissistic prick, extremely difficult to work with if you're not kissing his arse. Alan White is am amazing drummer and worthy replacement but in my mind, Mcarrol wasn't the weakest link in the DM days, Guigsy was.
I agree mate tony stood up at noel they all kissed Noel's ass because they knew of they didn't they were sacked apart from Liam who didn't give a stuff tong drumming is fine he could have played the albums noel just didn't like him simple guigsy was a snake the weakest one
While McCarroll may not be the most badass drummer there ever was, he was great for that Oasis sound. And never as hopeless on the drums as Alan White was xD He does seem a solid bloke. Would love to read this book!
Oasis don’t have a sound, It all depends on what kind of song Noel was writing at the time. Listen to DM, It’s a bit punky sounding, Then listen to SOTSOG that’s more dancy cause Noel was using drum loops on quite a few of the tracks. Every album sounds different.
Met Tony at a meet and greet in Halifax. A genuinly top bloke. Talked about sticking up to Noel... Tony said it was meat and potatoes what he did, nothing complex. Enough space for everyone to play, no fancy rolls
As a drummer myself, the drummer is the glue of the band. If that person does not get on with the leads, then it is quits for him. Nothing against Tony, the brothers obviously had personal issues. He should have been allowed to stay with them, but that is life. Cheers mate. 🍀🍀
Tony McCarroll was a powerful live drummer, he really did a great job and without him Definitely Maybe wouldn't be as great. Live Forever man

First time listening ..... blasting through cheap speakers in an ERF lorry on Radio 1
...
Even back in the 70's the studios would listen through a small transistor radio before pressing !!!
...
I didn't hear the track - THE TRACK HEARD ME
Tony. You WERE the drums of oasis..best drummer
i can highly recommend his book! of course you can't say for sure if everything happened the way he describes it but as many others said before: it really changes your opinion on liam and noel
the basic play style od Mccarroll was better than the complexity and the repetition on White one's. A good drummer too but Mccaroll was better
Zak's "Live Forever" drumming made me remember Tony
Alan was and is better
They Rocked best with Tony...
It's true what Bonehead says: Liam's voice 'was' Oasis
merseybeast76 yeh defo. Hearing Noel sing songs like rock n roll star is torture on the ears
Interviewer: what did you bring to the band that Tony McCarroll didn’t?
Alan White: Time keeping.
Say all you want about Tony being on Oasis’ best album and not needing technical chops (all true), but if a drummer can’t keep time they are useless.
what a great guy. preferred his drumming to be fair.
I wonder if he got drumming lessons or why he didn't think to get drumming lessons . If you can't do something it's best to learn and keep practicing to improve your self. Don't Let people get you down.
I liked his book,,his story about his encounter with a marching drummer in the street as a kid was faf!
Top bloke.
what did he said about guigsy? didn't get it
Going to buy the book. Only fair to hear his side.
top book loved it..
tony you looked the part back there mate.sshame
And Alan white hopeless. 🤣🤣
Met Tony at a meet and greet in Halifax. A genuinly top bloke. Talked about sticking up to Noel... Tony said it was meat and potatoes what he did, nothing complex. Enough space for everyone to play, no fancy rolls
all the original line up are real honest blokes ...get them back
As a drummer myself, the drummer is the glue of the band. If that person does not get on with the leads, then it is quits for him. Nothing against Tony, the brothers obviously had personal issues. He should have been allowed to stay with them, but that is life. Cheers mate.
