1:10 That weirdly long and thin connecting bit makes so much sense to be used as a TIE Fighter dock! It turns the whole thing into a fragile turret into a really interesting multi-purpose vessel.
Literally just yesterday was discussing how _Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles_ has at least *17* continuity errors listed on the book's Wookiepedia entry, yet this is the 'canon'' reference book that makes the Nebulon-B 1,200 kmh, as fast as a TIE fighter... _The Far Orbit Project_ is one of my favorite books because of the extreme detail they get into for the Nebulon-B (800 kmh)... They had a vertically arranged hanger dedicated to it's wing of 36 TIE fighters in the forward module. Originally the TIE Wing was organized as 2 squadrons of 18 TIEs each, but later switched to 3 squadrons of 12 TIEs each.
1:34 My theory is the engines are specially designed so that they get cooled by the air so that they can go at ahead flank basically in an atmosphere but in space if you go at ahead flank then your engines overheat for the Tie Fighter was mainly designed for space so it didn't have that atmospheric flights was a second thought so they didn't really give the Tie Fighter the ability to go at such a speed that engines would overheat in space
I agree, though I don't thing that would be an issue on Space, but then again, we don't know exactly how heat work on Space with machines, so that could be the answer
No. And yes. I think it was invaluable to the New Republic / Rebel Alliance effort in multiple arenas. Medical. Support. Combat frigate. But without it the Rebels would have found something else to do the same job. Maybe older Venerators or Venators. The Rebels were too intelligent (back then. Yes in the fact that it serves for a medical fragites, and no because besides that they would have had other, stronger options I say stronger because they could be easily broken in half like a matchstick in the mid-section. Also, they were the Empire's ships, so the Empire would have know how to take one out and where everything is, even if Rebel engineers made changes.
I remember seeing some DeviantArt fanarts of the Nebulon-B Frigate where they changed the mid-hull into either a bigger hangar Bay or a Hull with rows of turbolasers on both sides. Well, it helps compensates the slim as slim shady mid section.

I would’ve thought that the on-screen Nebulon-B’s were actually stripped-down versions of the original ships. That would explain the weak mid-section, and give it an overall streamlined look, perhaps even losing its hanging module rack, which could have possibly originally been integrated to the middle as well.

Okay, that is how it carries 24 fighters, outside couplings? Not a hangar? Or is there a hangar variant. 300 meters is a long way, a super carrier is 337 meters in length and carries 75+ planes. So, if only a portion of 100 meters at front is used as a hangar, can 24 fighters be crammed in there? Edit: sources go between 12-24 fighters.

My guess is that the TIE has no shields to reduce drag and has to redirect power to its repulsers. Whereas the frigate has shields and a much more powerful reactor/energy source so operating the repulsers would be much easier for it. I imagine the shielded craft being aerodynamic like an arrow while the TIE would be essentially worse then a flying brick. Not only held back by power issues but also for fear of tearing itself apart.
This is a very popular rebel ship of course but you forgot to add one option to best frigate question. That is, of course, the MC30 Mon Calamari Frigate.
West End Games put out a 176 page campaign called the Far Orbit project a pirates and privateer supplement in 1998 introducing the first Nebulon B to join the rebel alliance, provides a fair amount of information along with detailed deck plans for most of the ship, was a damn good campaign and an equally good read.
Maybe the Nebulon-B is faster in atmosphere than a TIE Fighter because it actually has shileds. Also, maybe the TIE could go faster but has to keep max speed limited just in case a gust of air from the side catches ALL THAT WING SURFACE AREA, ovepowering the stabilizers and sending it twirling into the ground 😂
WAY back in the day, during an old miniatures combat system, the Nebulon-B was described as an imperial cruiser that the rebels chopped off the extra armor and stuff off from, which resulted in that hacked down 'fish spine, head, and tail' look, the Rebels just kept what was essential. I always thought that was a cool field expedient description of a weird ship.
the only real and magor change I would change in this ship is that midsection, make it much thicker and have them be something like hanger's and extra storage space, it sound's and would be much better even if it cost speed, that's a small price to pay in my opinion
I've actually came up with my own inspired ship for my version of the prequels for this ship All the ships were designed by productions to not only use star destroyers but to also mass produce fleets against the first order as the new republic built multiple planet bases to act as bases to prevent the first order gaining any proper control of major space routes or systems. Called the Nr frigate is a new modernised nebulon frigate that is slightly altered in design, mainly for anti star fighter and fighter carrier puproses. They were also accompanied in groups of two to three and mostly accompanied with an Nr cruiser. The ship is mainly equipped with laser cannons for anti starfighter assaults and the ship could attach 20 to 30 ships on their wings max to be deployed against enemy ships. Also equipped with 3 star destroyer shield generators of the middle area to protect both the hangers and personal sections of the ship. PLEASE GIVE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS IDEA.
One of my loved ships in all star wars lore, allways loved this ship, no matter how ugly, fragile or weak it may look. And one of the scenes that made me love her, was the battle of endor, wen one of them was broadsiding against a star destroyer... Epic.
I like the Corona-Class better because even if the shields fail it is probably much more sturdier than the Nebulon because other than it the Corona-Class has an interconected Hangar pice with actual defencive plating instead of that long tube. That is probably one of the weakest points on the Nebulon-class because let's be honest here it doasn't give much protection and is even wekened more by being riddled with holes because of tha hangars. If I'm not mistaken it is shown various times in Star Wars throughout diffrend media that it first snaps in half at that point. It could have been a potential plus if they would have made it so that the sections in there can be shut sealed and put some weaker trusters on the front part and some lasers or missile lounchers on the bag part so that when it snaps in half you have than two ships to fight against instead of having one broken ship. With putting sole missile lounchers on the bag Part you could have than a wich promarely Deals damage in laser canons and can deffend better against smaler ships wile another is a havy hitter that can do massive damage to the bigger ships. Maby even make the middle bridge part/tube an interconected pice and the explanation for that would be because of the trusters on the front part not being strong enough its manuverabulity would be bad and the hiperdrive being only on the back section they needed to keep them conected for a jump into hyperspace and better manuverabulity. The front section is providing some extra generators in order for the hyperspacejump generator to work. Because of the mainly hit and run tactics of the rebels this would not go against the canon and due to the separation the shields would be less effective making them than easier to destroy but not too easy. The reason why the middle section is targeted would be because of the doking mechanism the shields should in theory be overlapping but by having them conected it generates one big shield wich has a weaker point on that middle section. This could have been potential inprovements on the Nebulon-class not to contradictory to the canon....or am I mistaken?
I never thought this was a ship class, but rather a unique cludge that the Rebels put together from salvaged ships- which would explain the different colored pods in the decending part towards the front.
for the Force Unleashed 2 depiction of the Salvation, i prefer that much larger ship, the Assault Frigate Mark 1, from the Wii version. at least the double-to-triple increase in size makes the innards make sense.
Atmospheric speeds in star wars make so sense. I'm no physics expert, but I'm pretty sure their massive size should slow down their movement in atmosphere, unless those shields really do remove all that drag somehow
Hi. Physics major here (as much as sci-fi can allow) Assuming plasma based shields (as this is our only real life comparison) Plasma has a much lower skin friction than say metal. Also you could shape the shield to minimize the drag coefficient. Tie fighters on the other hand have no shields and are poorly shaped for atmospheric flight.
Jonathon Spears Right, Aerospace engineer here, the Tie fighters main issue with drag are its big solar wings, which give it similar flight characteristics of a brick.
When one was Mothma HQ, where was the conference/briefing room? Looking at Complete Vehicles book for medical frigate,..cud it have been where Bacta tanks were, as plenty open space if were seating pilots etc? The bridge had raised platform? So doesn't look much room..? U mentioned bombing uses, wudve been better bet in TLJ against Dreadnaught..maybe less losses? 😂
I'll always have a huge soft spot for the Nebulon-B. I have a massive soft spot for Frigates in general but a Nebulon-B was the first ship any of my characters ever captained in a tabletop RPG. The Nebulon-B class actually isn't my favorite STar Wars Frigate class though. That goes to the Shashore class mostly seen in the Legacy comics though some appear in comics set earlier as well.
In Legends the Redemption also makes an appearance in DarkForces2; JediKnight (game & novels) as the ship Kyle Kitarn is treated on after retreaving his fathers data disk. This is also as his Force powers are awakening and visions are starting to assert themselves. Jan Ors recognizes this and contacts Leia who has Luke (still waiting on his new hand after the CloudCity duel) council him on the paths of the force. The Redemption also makes an un-named appearance at the end of Zuccas & 4Lom story in 'Tales of the Bounty Hunters' as where they end up after leaving the Empire to join the Rebels
You know the Nebulon B looks like a giant hand gun right? It's pretty much obvious by looking at it, that's what The Nebulon B's look was based on. Do you remember the laser blaster that Luke's Jedi Figure got in his all Black Return of The Jedi Series? Yeah that's pretty much what The Nebulon B's look was based on. The obvious weakness in this craft never seemed to be fixed, the long then connection from the back to the front, seriously that should have been an obvious weakness that needed to be fixed. Even the improved versions did not fix this problem. I would have thickened the center part in width and the vertical aspect of the middle part and put a bigger shield generator on them . Now the Corona Class wasn't bad it and the C still ignored the fricken problem of the thin connection from the front to back. It's a legendary ship, but damn if you're going improve on a ship please address its obvious weakness's.
Also the nebulon-b has been able to land the multiple wings of Fighters since the very first Star Wars TIE fighter and X-wing games you could have whole squadrons on a nebulon-b
Their ease of destruction was nothing more than a plot device because accorting to the manuals, the Nebulon-B had some damn powerful shields, specifically to protect the main spar superstructure. That's why in Empire At War, the Nebulon-B's "Special Power" is its ability to make its shields impervious as it quickly recharges them. This ship was MADE for protracted fighting against other capital ships. I think that Lucasfilm probably chose to destroy them a lot because losing a Nebulon-B was seen as very impoactful (it was a Rebel capital ship after all). I also believe that because the models were probably a lot easier to put back together when broken since it was always the main spar that broke when they were destroyed. They never expoded completely so it's even possible that they had a little fastener built into them so they could be quick-disconnected and then quick-connected again. The ship being blown in two was a VERY impactful thing to see on the big screen.
Are you going to provide new information of the new movie soon? Question can you do a video of the Macross series of the Robotech Masters against the Invid [I know this isn't Star Wars I'm not a Patreon supporter on your list just curious if you would].
I was never a fan of the fact the Empire used this ship. It never seemed to be something the Empire would use. A rejected concept maybe, but I don't see them using it
When the original X-Wing PC game came out in 1993 they were limited in creating new, unrecognizable ships. They had the Empire use Blockade Runners and Nebulon-B cruisers as patrol ships throughout the galaxy. These ships are useful in an imperial fleet to protect Star Destroyers from rebel fighter squadrons, while the Star Destroyers concentrate on rebel capital ships.
In regards to speed, we also need to think mass and density. If the Nebulon is smaller than a star destroyer and carrying all the equipment and defenses, then compared to a starfighter which is 10x smaller the size makes ships slower or faster.
I’d say it can make sense for it to be faster in atmo but slower in space than the TIE because the TIE had problems going max speed in atmo because of its lack of shields and non-aerodynamic shape

Not only held back by power issues but also for fear of tearing itself apart.
EC Henry made a video on the imperial variant of the Nebulon-B.
It took 3 years but did it finally pay off
Lol you guys are amazing I put y'all through a lot. Death Star, Eclipse ect. Coming soon!
@@MetaNerdzLore take your time, we waited a while for this video but it paued off wonderfully, so I'm sure those will be incredible too
What took 3 years?
@@sonicANDtailsfan157k this video
Oh oops okay
Me In hoth: I like how those wires are next to ice that's probably safe right
0:26 Where did these numbers come from? Been looking for that for all the capital ships.
There was also the nebulon k frigate mentioned in the Dameron comic, but said to be affiliated to the first order
The Nebulon - C successor had greatly reduced fuel tanks however.…
WAY back in the day, during an old miniatures combat system, the Nebulon-B was described as an imperial cruiser that the rebels chopped off the extra armor and stuff off from, which resulted in that hacked down 'fish spine, head, and tail' look, the Rebels just kept what was essential. I always thought that was a cool field expedient description of a weird ship.
I had always been interested in the Nebulon B, ever since playing the old battlefront game....
I've been waiting for this video.
Lol yeah my bad
the only real and magor change I would change in this ship is that midsection, make it much thicker and have them be something like hanger's and extra storage space, it sound's and would be much better even if it cost speed, that's a small price to pay in my opinion
this is one of my favorite designs of all time.
I've actually came up with my own inspired ship for my version of the prequels for this ship
All the ships were designed by productions to not only use star destroyers but to also mass produce fleets against the first order as the new republic built multiple planet bases to act as bases to prevent the first order gaining any proper control of major space routes or systems.
To what I heard, I doubt that the rebellion had less then 6 nebulae b’s they were one of the main ships used by the rebellion
Oh, way more than that. At least a dozen at the beginning, surely.
for the Force Unleashed 2 depiction of the Salvation, i prefer that much larger ship, the Assault Frigate Mark 1, from the Wii version. at least the double-to-triple increase in size makes the innards make sense.
The Nebulon B must have better aerodynamics and atmospheric shields than the Tie Fighter
Atmospheric speeds in star wars make so sense. I'm no physics expert, but I'm pretty sure their massive size should slow down their movement in atmosphere, unless those shields really do remove all that drag somehow
Hi. Physics major here (as much as sci-fi can allow)
Assuming plasma based shields (as this is our only real life comparison)
Plasma has a much lower skin friction than say metal. Also you could shape the shield to minimize the drag coefficient.
Tie fighters on the other hand have no shields and are poorly shaped for atmospheric flight.
Jonathon Spears
Right, Aerospace engineer here, the Tie fighters main issue with drag are its big solar wings, which give it similar flight characteristics of a brick.
@@Dunarcarn The shields can deflect particles, including air.
The TIE has no shields at all, and that is why it is slower. Any ship with shields should be able to go faster than a TIE.
Not sure exactly, but the second point is very true
Just strip out some medical wards, or maybe use a lounge in one of the pods below the bridge pod?
chris sonofpear1 good thinking!! Uve worked for a galactic shipyard before I see 😆
How about the nebulon K?
Hopefully soon
Great vid MetaNerdz. I learned of the Imperial Nebulons from the game Tie Fighter.
Maybe the Nebulon used its shield to reduce drag on the hull, with SCRAM jets in its engines.
Corona Class Frigate... wonder where they cooked up THAT lovely name...
Long before the current troubles...
Really hope we get to see more of the Nebulon-B in canon I feel like we haven’t seen it a ton on either side.
Do you know what else looks like a giant hand gun megatrons altmode in g1 and Shockwaves altmode in g1
Also the nebulon-b has been able to land the multiple wings of Fighters since the very first Star Wars TIE fighter and X-wing games you could have whole squadrons on a nebulon-b
The Nebula Class Star Destroyer is one of the most badass ships in Star Wars don’t @ me
Nice to see you guys separating Canon & Legends now.
Did the Corona-class frigate happen to crash somewhere in china?

Are you going to provide new information of the new movie soon? Question can you do a video of the Macross series of the Robotech Masters against the Invid [I know this isn't Star Wars I'm not a Patreon supporter on your list just curious if you would].
Is the Battle of Atollon 2 ABY? I would think it’s 2 BBY since Yavin is still being used
Yeah it was BBY good catch
Battle at Kamino is my favorite part in The Force Unleashed 2.
When Starkiller used the force to maneuver it towards Kamino.
I’d say it can make sense for it to be faster in atmo but slower in space than the TIE because the TIE had problems going max speed in atmo because of its lack of shields and non-aerodynamic shape
*"Using it so effectively"*
Litteraly a ship made of *THICC* Metal Blobs connected with a stick...
