    Beezy needs to jump in the conversation more. He's definitely one of my favourites on DEHH but he needs to get his two cents in when everyone's arguing.

      Kingsman™ damn you let people change your thoughts on something very easily. it almost seems like you don't know what you like or dislike based on your own thoughts.. i think he's definitely some very good points like dre doesn't sounding unique but damn, this is still a very solid album on its core. great production, great work from everyone featured, lots of variety while still being cohesive and it's easily his darker, more mature album to date. it's not instant classic shit like chronic and 2001 but still a damn good project. if you like it, you like it..

    • @Altjoni
      @Altjoni 9 лет назад +1

      DihStyle69 that's what I'm saying. I'm a big big big fan of Dre. I was so happy to get a Dre project after 16 fucking years. So I didn't really payed any attention to the things that are "wrong" with this project. It's a very very dope project in my opinion is a classic but it doesn't top the two Chronics. I'm a reasonable fan if someone says there's is something missing from this Dre album. I'm going to give it another listen, not like a fan but like a critic. BUT AS ALWAYS I STILL THINK THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR.

    This is the first time in years I've completely disagreed with Myke's opinion. Love this album. My favorite of the year probably. This album to me makes Dre sound young and refreshed in this new era of hip hop. It makes him fit in so smoothly with the sound of today's new west coast rappers like the guys of TDE, YG, Odd Future, Vince Staples, etc.

  • @ihavemydignity
    @ihavemydignity 9 лет назад +16

    To add to what Ken said durin his part of the review: the way Dre is vs the way a lot of rappers now is astonishing. Quality over quantity and I respect Dre for that. Not releasing Detox just shows how great of an artist he is that he only wants the highest quality work, where as artists like Lil Wayne just seem to drop shit for the sake of dropping music.

    • @kennithbinge
      @kennithbinge 9 лет назад +2

      Razzle Dazzle Dre was in a bad spot too with Detox. So going with what he's inspired to do versus what he feels obligated to do makes a difference. Also, I think Dre realized that no matter what he puts out, people would not be happy.

  • @bangsjamin
    @bangsjamin 9 лет назад +53

    Question for Myke: Is it really reasonable to expect Dre to release another game changing album? The guy changed the sound of hip hop 3 times, isn't expecting him to do it again, especially a decade and a half after his prime, setting the bar a little too high? Personally, I came in expecting a fantastically produced album with great rapping, and I came out pleased. I do agree with you thought that Dre's rapping felt a bit inconsequential, I can't think of one track on here where Dre has the standout verse or even the standout delivery.

    • @Alpha99964
      @Alpha99964 9 лет назад +3

      Well said bruh. The expectations decide whether you like the album or not.

    • @kold1783
      @kold1783 9 лет назад +2

      bangsjamin It's completely Dre's fault for being a genius. You're absolutely right on the way he changed the sound of hip hop three times and Compton is a tight album. On the other hand I was expecting something more experimental from him.
      Same goes to Martin Scorcese: Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas all changed the way people perceived movies (critics as well) and by no means movies like Shutter Island or The wolf of wall street are bad movies, they're not just the game changers his first flicks were.

    • @imd3rrtyd4n
      @imd3rrtyd4n 9 лет назад +1

      Nite Waander Dre is 50, Scorsese is 72. Quentin Tarantino recently said he's going to stop making movies soon because he "doesn't want to make old man films." They have money, fame, and have accomplished more than most ever will. Despite their genius, where does the drive or motivation come from when you've already done it all? Are they even that hungry to want to change the game again? At some point, it's time to hang it up and let the next generation take it over.

    • @mykectown
      @mykectown 9 лет назад +10

      bangsjamin Yes. I definitely think it's reasonable to expect someone who has given us two game changing classics to come back with a project that, at least, bumps a lot of other projects out of the game for a minute. That didn't even remotely happen here. He just dropped a cool rap album. I'm not finna sit here and give it passes just because it's Dre. The album was OK. That's all I'm going to give it. Let's not forget that I repeatedly said that I didn't think it was bad. I just think it could have been better and definitely more experimental. Being content with this shit is like being cool that an award winning chef served you a fucking Whopper. It's still good but definitely nothing special.

    • @devinfore4687
      @devinfore4687 9 лет назад

      I bet it's a burden on Myke to continuously have to restate an opinion over, and over again lol. It's clearly just constructive criticism. Myke knows what Dre can do, and just knows he can do better. I concur. The album probably wont be played again front to back. I might only play a couple of tracks from it.

  • @taigawoods6526

    Chronic - 9/10
    2001 - 9.5/10
    Compton - 8/10
    Myke, come on, Dre don't have to kill the rap game every time he put out a new project. All your criticims is basically "I want more" with no constructive points whatsoever. That's bias at it's finest. You spoiled by his last 2 albums man, never enough...

    I don't care what anyone says, I love the hell out of this album. It's certainly one of the best ones this year. The production is dope, lot of the tracks bang hard, like really, really, hard. The features are tight as f***, every one brings their A game. The tracks are really cinematic, they have an array of emotions, they casts different atmospheres, it truly feels like it's made for a movie. I mean what else do you want from a Dre album?
    "Darkside/Gone" feels villainous, almost ghastly, and the second half gets more intense with those piano keys and Kendrick's verse. "Deep Water" feels scary, how the tracks depicts Compton to a deep body of water is brilliant. The drowning is haunting, the verses drive the point more, it's a neat metaphor. "Animals" is soulful, Anderson really shines with his melodic verse, and his singing on the hook is pleasant, the message really is compelling. I can really go on, I really dig a lot of it.

    I don't think this should be his grand finale. I completely agree with Myke I had no clue Dre was rapping on most tracks until I looked up the lyrics. It's a good album, but it's an okay Dr. Dre. When he dropped this I was expecting a game changer and this wasn't it. He should drop one more album and change the game one last time. He ain't go out busting if this was it.

    Great review of a great album!
    One thing I think a lot of ppl have overlooked is in the intro, Dre created his own "production studio theme". Back on Chronic 2001, he was sued by THX for using their iconic deep note. Seems like he threw up a big "fuck you" to THX by including this type of intro on Compton

    I really disagree with Myke, I do think this project has that grit to it. Genocide, Darkside/Gone, Loose Canons, Issues, Deep Water, One Shot One Kill, Medicine Man, all have a sense of grittiness to them. Especially Deep Water, that track is scary af.
    King Mez did write the majority of the verses, but Dre was there throughout the whole process giving input. The verse do encapsulate where Dre is at now. When he rhymes I do think "yeah, that is something Dre would say".

    I respect that Dre didn't take the Jigga route with this album! He very easily could have made an album about how many multi-million dollars he makes, how many Picasso's, Warhol's, or Basquiat paintings he owns, board meetings at Apple; instead he used this project to talk about the place he's from, social issues like police brutality, and his history!

    2001 > The Chronic > Compton
    2001 is just spectacular to me. So fun and innovative and exciting and blahblah I love it. The Chronic is a fantastic project too, it just doesn't hit me consistently and in such various ways like 2001, but I still love it. I actually loved Compton as well, but it's just clearly not up to snuff with his first two for reasons that Myke on this vid clearly details.

    I'm with Feefo on this. I didn't grow up on N.W.A, but _Compton_ is an awesome reflection on the city and time that Dr. Dre grew up in and companion to Straight Outta Compton. It has pretty of great songs and features.

    This felt like a compilation album to me. It really felt like Dre just got a bunch of artists together and put a bunch of dope tracks on an album. It didn't really feel like he had a theme or much of an arc or anything. That being said, I liked the album. It was pretty good.

    I can see where Myke is coming from with the production of this album. It really is different from his other two albums. The chronic and 2001 are classic albums that will always be his best work, but I feel that they have a sense of nostalgia when it comes to it. Its production is different because it's suppose to be a more modern sound. While older guys like them who were around when the chronic and 2001 were originally released found those beats to be amazing same go for the younger audience including myself. I wasn't around for those first two albums I was born in 92 so I wasn't really into hip hop till I was a teenager and that's when I heard those two amazing albums. While it's not better then his old work it's a pretty good album cause to me this is the west coast sound I know and most recently hear a lot for young west coast artist now. Just my two cents on it.

    My take toward the album is more in line with Myke. I tried to deny feeling like that at first, because this is Dre, bruh! Dr. Dre ain't dropped shit since I was a sophomore in high school!!
    But yea maan...this shit is dope, but not Dr. Dre dope. The production lives up to his name, but l couldn't help feeling like this sounds like a dope ass compilation.

    I still rather jam The Chronic & The Chronic 2001 albums, over this one, this soundtrack does not bump in my whip. I tried, but I felt like Dr.Dre's sound was missing from this project, and I just couldnt get with it. The only 2 tracks on this project that I liked was the intro and the 2nd track....that was it for me. Whenever Dre drops an album he's always been able to give you that top notch "California" production including the content, like im surprised certain heads weren't on this album, like Kurupt, nipsey hussle,YG,etc. I woulda thought it would have had more of a Cali Allstar line up.

  • @adamcastaneda4799

    I thought this was a great project from beginning to end, with the great production and great features. Id give it a solid 8, maybe 9. However i agree with Myke that i felt Dre should have gone more gritty, West Coast sound of the 90s. I also hope that this isnt his last project cuz i felt that this was his concept album, or maturity album to help movie n to show he still got it, but i would like him to release one more that sounds jus pure West Coast like Dre know how to do. Overall tho, this is a very good project n hope to continue to see Dre in music business. Good review DEHH.

    i feel like its hard in today's society to differientiate your sound from others as a producer because everybody is using the same vst presets, not digging for they own drum breaks and hits, and making 5-10 minute trap beats. I feel that sometimes limiting yourself with what you have and just working with all you have and tweaking it to something no one heard before will make you stand out against the others

    Gosh this album really grew on me. First few days, I really couldn't get into it. It was not what I expected from Dre- it didn't feel right. Then a few days later was walking home late at night, gave it another try and everything just clicked. I recommend people give it time and don't expect it to be like 2001 or Chronic. You have to be in a certain mood to feel it.

    Dre has always been an executive producer more than just a producer for beats. If you look at the two Chronic albums, both are compilations featuring Dre rapping really.
