Took our daughter to see this when she was 14 or 15 having no idea what we were getting into. Omg we were all laughing so freakin hard but totally mortified lol. My wife and I are both former evangelical Christians turned atheist/agnostic. I’ve never laughed so hard in my life. In a world where people take religion so freakin seriously it’s refreshing to see a show that pokes fun at some of the ridiculousness of it all. As we left the theater we both agreed we were either really bad parents or really cool parents. She thought we were awesome. Lol please I’m sure she’s heard worse at school.
You were amazing parents, it was an amazing experience for your daughter I am sure. You are an atheist, a position which is far more consistent and honest than theism, and there's no issue with you showing your daughter aspects of that world view. The religious send their children, and if they can get away with it yours, to indoctrination centres and camps and no one bats an eye... Where people might not swear but say actually harmful shit all the time. You get to push back on that. I know I am late but I also wanted to congratulate you on leaving religion behind. If you wonder why I am commenting on this now it is because I saw the show for the second time last night. First time was a few years ago. Both in Amsterdam, that is how far reaching this musical has become.
Saw this in the Oklahoma, the buckle of the Bible belt and the reaction of the audience was overwhelmingly positive. I was so expecting tons of people to walk out but no one did!
I do IT support for this local theatre company. One day, the non-tech savvy office manager called me frantically saying, "The server is down! I can't get it back up! My e-mail isn't working! I can't get my work done! I'm at my wit's end!" I told her, "Just say 'Hasa Diga Ebowai!' "
I listened to the soundtrack before I saw the musical and when I heard this song, I was like O_O because I'm Christian but when I saw it in person and the production in it's entirety, It all made sense to me. I think it's one of the most best songs in the musical... and it's so catchy!
Hello I know I'm late but yes you really need the context to understand this show's message fully and realise that at its core it's actually a very hopeful story
I totally agree about how Cathy it is! I was walking around work singing it the next day not realising what I was singing and one of the guy was like “ahh excuse me!” 😂😂😂
“If you don’t like what we say, try living here a couple days. Watch all your friends and family die! Hasa diga Eebowai!” Rory was right on the money. They’re not sorry that you’re not off your high horse. This is their life that they have to live and deal with. That’s just the truth.
Hasa Diga Eebowai, when you really think about it, is a beautiful song! I'm so glad that they did not hesitate to go through with the song, and because they just had that " justgo for it" attitude, Hasa Diga Eebowai is pretty much everyone's favorite song!
I described this song to my therapist. She told me that she leads groups for people with terminal illnesses, which includes a session in which everybody chants "Fuck you God." True story.
@DevanLund Hasa Diga Eebowai doesn't actually mean anything. Robert Lopez says in another interview that the words are just random syllables. They don't actually mean anything in any language.
I'll be honest - my ears still burn from the words. But, I think every single theatre goer who stayed through the song must have been solidly on the side of the Ugandans, who sing that song from a place of such pain and sorrow, despite the humorous overtones.
Sad but true. We can only dream of having this kind of humor here. People are still too close minded. We're stuck with only being allowed to have things approved by the "Padrão Globo de Qualidade".
I think that most everyone in the world that has felt the universe slap you in the head or dealt with real tragedy, has felt like telling God or the cosmos to f*** off. I know when I am honest with myself, even with my petty problems, I have felt that. And I am a mormon rm.
Not sure if this would be the reaction of audiences overseas. I am from Brazil, and people here are horrible stupid hypocrites. I am absolutely certain that would be protests, walk-outs and arbitrary censorship here. We do not have freedom of speech. Literally. There is no such guarantee. Parody is not regulated, and it's mostly illegal if it's a bit offensive.

Seems to me you are talking about yourself. I have always been an atheist, My parents showed me things and allowed me to make up my own mind. They didn't tell me what to believe. In what way do you think religions have benefited mankind? According to their deeds they have a great deal to answer for.
You should reread the entirety of the conversation. Maybe this time, your misunderstandings/one line thinking will stand out to you. Probably not though, ah well.
Yes, I know loads of Chinese history, thanks. They did indeed have internal wars, same as everywhere has. As for colonisation, where I live in Wales every young man was either rounded up and sent to Australia in a prison ship, or they jumped ship to America. There was nothing voluntary about any of it.
Yes, you asked me that. And that's where you essentially said I was a Christian, which is patently false. You just can't accept somebody not of that faith, would defend it on these points you're making. Which have been ridiculous, to say the least.
