- Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, creators of the new musical, "The Book of Mormon," are our guests. They discuss how they worked together to create this irreverent and crowd-pleasing Broadway show.
Taped: March 4, 2011.
Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins.
The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.)
The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.

The 2 people interviewing seem like characters Trey and Matt would make fun of in their show
Three very talented men. Robert Lopez even went on to win an Oscar for Let it go, the Frozen song.
Octonauts Assemble has a lot happened in a week? (I think so)
Wow he wrote let it go ?
@@singhatar0912you should read up about Lopez. It won’t take long to find out he is actually one of the most successful writers of all time. GOAT status. You’ll be impressed by what you find about him
Out of everything he’s done, “let it go” is the one you focus on 😂 bro got 2 EGOTS in like 20 years, he’ll go down in history as objectively one of the best
@@TellURide447he is successful but hardly one of the most successful.
These guys have the right idea: most people who want to be subversive will go "How do I take this funny thing and make it edgy?" Trey & Matt go "How do we take this really messed-up thing and make it funny?" They think of the audience first and foremost. They are true entertainers!
what i love the most about The Book of Mormon is that there is no hate toward the religion
they are able to make fun of it without completely bashing peoples faith and that what makes it so great ^-^
Maria Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ exactly
Umm “I Believe” absolutely destroys Mormonism and it’s silly beliefs
Im an ex mormon but i agree maria
@@epiccollision They "destroy" mormonism in this song, but they finish the show clearly saying how religions can make a positive impact in a society, dispite whatever they believe. It doesnt really matter if those stories are true or not, what matters is that is helping people. So they don't actually destroy It
I think their success is based on destroying the ridiculous IDEAS of faith, while making the PEOPLE themselves sympathetic and identifiable. Also, there is no reason why, in order to help people and do good things for the world, it is necessary to believe in crazy things.
My God the lady is trying so hard to get them to just shit on Mormonism. I feel she totally missed the entire point of the play.
+Steve H Yea, she's a little bigoted.
@BP If being a bigot is a quirk...
The Mormons started sending out women a few years ago. Instead of the usual two nerds in white shirts and ties.
I got stopped by two lovely gorgeous young women and for half a second I admit I was interested. If only for the wrong reasons. I said ''No sorry I'm an atheist.'' They replied ''Oh that doesn't matter.''
Lol.
I think she was just fascinated... it’s a hard religion to comprehend... I would know I grew up in and around it... and I still don’t get a lot of it... I’ve since left... but I think tbh TBoM Musical is accurate and hilarious and it is fascinating
First Last they’ve been sending women out since the late 70s....
If Stephen Sondheim sends you a letter telling you that your movie was one of the best musicals he's seen in 15 years, you know you're good.
Matt Stone really went in on this interview!!!!! The host guy was kinda being a dick but Matt Stone totally kept his composure & delivered quality feedback & jokes.
That is because Matt Stone is a professional, and the host is a talentless, prentious hack.
as matt always does, he’s so collected and clever
@@paulmd2010 I'm glad I'm not alone in thinking that guy was so pretentious ass. Opens the chat with a brag about how he said the show was good before most people, and just seemed to talk down to the rest of the panel.
@@atticusstark5197 he was joking in pretty sure lol
I didn't think the guy was a dick but the woman was a right cunt.
18:30 I have to agree with them, I am so pleasantly surprised by the Mormon church's reaction. There were ads for Mormonism in the play bill. It would have been so easy for them to get all bent out of shape over this. Honestly, it makes me think more highly of the church.
agree completely,
Yeah as a Mormon I’ve heard several times “the people in your region are the nicest people on earth” thanks for kind words
its interesting how Matt and trey know the host is condescending, and not to mention his jokes are painful, but they stay poised and don't even spare a second glance to him when he tries to make his shitty jokes. that shows charisma.
You can't leave this empty No, read the social cues
? Hes fine
I'm a Mormon. THANK YOU for not being ignorant. Really, thanks. It's nice to hear that every once and a while.
Hated the hosts. Felt bad for Bobby I know he was a full partner in the whole musical but he kind of felt like a third wheel.
I think that both trey and stones television success with south park that kinda brought them to the forefront of the conversation
It’s so hard to believe these dudes are on a show like this. They are geniuses, and just normal dudes and hate Hollywood but they made an amazing musical it’s crazy. I’ll always root for these pair of down to earth nerds
BASEketball is still one of my favorite movies from growing up, still holds up and is hilarious 24 years later and I can't wait to watch it with my son one day.
Absolutely one of my favorites movies ever
Hey look how good I am at picking good shows. I'm really good at it. It's important you all know how awesome I am.
Yeah that guy was annoying.
He’s joking around guys, don’t be so harsh
I think @Chidsuey was joking too 😉
That was annoying
I'm about 9 years late on this, but I'm from Utah, and Mormons LOVE musicals. So when this came through the state it sold out immediately. They have a sense of humor about it, swears aside, they can quote this musical up and down. They're almost a little proud about it.
As a trucker, the Book of Mormon is my background music whenever i pass through SLC, which I've done twice a week for 3 years on my dedicated route
I would pay good money to hear what the three said to each other afterward . One can only hope they squeezed the hosts in on a southpark episode.
The woman interviewer is so unbelievably frustrating. They were all having a dialogue about how fascinating the Mormon religion is and how much there is to learn about it and she has the nerve to say, "Let's not get carried away." The only one getting carried away is you. Matt and Trey said several times, even in this specific interview, that they are not making fun of Mormonism. They are making fun of people. All people. Wish she would just keep those narrow minded thoughts to herself. No need to bring them out in an interview like this. So unprofessional.
@You can't leave this empty the church does huge humanitarian and charity works and many of their members donate his money to help the poor, How is that affecting blacks and women?
That guy is just pissed because The Book Of Mormon Is awesome. He keeps trying to down grade everything but even he can't hide from Matt and Trey's AWESOMENESS.
I loved Book of Mormon, it was hilarious! Parker and Stone handled themselves really professionally in this interview too. Bravo!
lol randy marsh had a bro off with Stephen Sondheim haha
Bro DOWN :)
how insulting that the host refers to Matt & Trey as "amateurs". I KNOW he was referring to their theater experience, but what a poor choice of words! How about "newbies" to Broadway. I also agree that the hosts are very condescending. Matt & Trey (and Robert) are so smooth and professional and most of all respectful!
Especially since they won 9 Tonys, you can't exactly call them amateurs, can you?
+Christine Roppel It was kind of a joke.
@@Chlo255 They hadn't even officially opened the show at the time of this interview, so they had zero Tonys at the time. But ten Emmy nominations with four wins and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song were certainly on the table at that time. Incredibly condescending hosts, and incredible graciousness on the part of all three. I've found that Trey usually takes the lead in the more collegial interviews, where his snarkiness comes off as fun and endearing, while interviews like this where Matt tends to dominate is because the jabs and redirection need to be more subtle. Unfortunately this left Robert out of the loop in a way that a Trey-led interview probably would have been able to pan to him much more consistently.
Susan Haskins just wants to bash Mormons and is incredibly uncomfortable with Trey and Matt giving them compliments. Ugh, she seems like a delight.
Right? You can really tell she wanted this discussion to be about how sexist, homophobic and stupid Mormons are. She keeps trying to steer the conversation in that direction but Trey and Matt just refuse to go there. I loved it.
The guy changed topics pretty quick when she started to get too stupid with it, thought that was funny.
Didn't strike me that way. I don't think she even approached "bashing" Mormons. There are aspects of Mormon culture that deserve criticism as much as any other culture. It is an oversimplification to say any whole GROUP of people is nice, because the members are generally polite and don't swear.
It's been 8 years and we still don't have a film adaptation or a video of the show.
These guys are my heroes. I’m not into celebrity culture at all but there are a few exceptions and they are two of them. Would love to work on a project with them... if I get terminally ill at some point in my life I wonder if they’d up for it as a dying request... cus that’s what it’s be
Write the story of a RUclips commenter with Munchausen syndrome who fakes a dying request, then pitch it to them
Trey Matt and Robert were so awesome and chill, but what on earth was up with those interviewers?
The woman interrupted them multiple times just to bash Mormons or try to make one of the guests bash Mormons, and the guys kept trying to patronize them and he wouldn't stop banging on about how he's soooo good at picking which musicals are good or not.
Ugh.
She seem to hate mormons! Matt and Trey = legends ❤️
There are so many missionaries like the one that think he knows everything. They definitely get humbled especially when they have to have companions like the one portrayed in this broadway.
When will people give these guys the credit for being the comedic geniuses of this generation?
Trey and Matt could have shredded these horrible interviewers. I applaud their restraint!
I kept thinking how much they would roast them if they had the chance but they showed great restraint 😊
That lady really has it out for the Mormons.
"Bible fan fiction" is the best way I've ever heard to describe Mormonism. Amazing.
Yes it really is the best way to describe it.
Great interview, but then again ANY interview with Matt and Trey is always fascinating. Michael Riedel needs to give it a rest with that "I called it" crap. It's just annoying. But I guess a columnist feels the need to compensate around all these people that have actual talent.
The only people more annoying then people overcompensating, for low self esteem, are people overcompensating, for low self esteem, by picking on others with low self esteem.
(I mean the guy clearly has some self confidence issues, and clearly anybody who would write a spiteful comment, over something that took 5 seconds away from the conversation, has some equally big insecurities towards that failing too)
@@kkknotcool Is this Michael’s burner account? He brings it up 3 or 4 times. It is distracting. (Btw, very edgy of you to say the kkk isn’t “cool”. So brave. So hip.)
@@jainiajackson3216 I picked the name because it is in no way controversial but simultaneously has emotion behind a component of the name.(the kkk)
But I love the critical comments I get.
I never get racist criticizing me for dissing the kkk.
I just get people like you who are too stupid to see I have a joker profile next to my diss of the most universally hated group of people.
it's funny that the interviewer explains the importance of the love story to trey immediately after trey explains that to him like trey hadn't said a word.
Matt and Trey work their asses off so that our grey hairs don't come in quite as quickly. Laughter is the best medicine.
"Well lets not all get too carried away because you do point out that they(mormons) aren't very smart. Either their philosophical or-"
I'm glad Trey was able to explain the whole point of how silly they make mormons. It's as if the interviewers want to pick apart the musical and find some agenda that matches theirs.
This host is upset that "Amateurs" came in and getting props for an amazing Broadway experience. They keep jumping into different mediums and doing very well with each. Condescension is just jealousy / concern from an insecure person
That comment also annoyed me. Theatre has this kind of elitist mentality behind it.
I honestly thought he was just being facetious, knowing they like to kid around. I thought he seemed thrilled to be interviewing them. But if he was being elitist, I didn't catch it. Then again, I'm not that bright 😂.
@@kikib8434 that's what i thought too. its hard to tell, but its good to note that he doesn't just bring that up one time... maybe he does feel that way.
@@aPumpkn that's a totally fair point. I may have to watch him interview other people to compare. This is the only interview with him that I've seen (I watched it purely for Trey and Matt 😁).
I love how this man simply ignores that they wrote an entire movie musical, over and over again.
I feel really bad for Matt and Trey; having to deal with those two pretentious, narcissistic interviewers must have been a struggle. At times it actually seemed like something South Park would parody.
Dom Espo
yeah, lol, they've made four musical MOVIES. that's WAAAY harder than stage shows
I think these cunts have a stick shoved so deep up their arses that they are annoyed because of the success of The Book of Mormon. Pretentious douchebags (specially the guy).
***** That's bullshit. Making a broadway show and making a flim is so different that you can't even say one is harder to make than another
If this was 20 years ago they probably would have farted on the interviewer.
It was a joke, are you people really that sensitive?
Remember the South Park episode where Jarrod from subway wins biggest Douche in the universe? Well, the host of this show now holds that award
Sean O'reilly John Edwards?
Yeah that was joh Edwards
@@Gino3618 damn it you're right. I mis remembered
In my mission, my mission president showed the clip created by Tre Parker and Matt Stone about the "Hell director" where everyone has been sent to hell and they ask who made it to heaven in one of our monthly missionary conferences. The reply by the hell director is "the mormons." It was hilarious. I am learning more and more that Tre Parker and Matt Stone really do try to portray the comical aspects of how we mormons come across to the world while still commenting on the hardships of what we may face.
I hadn't heard of Robert Lopez before this, but it seems that he is an intelligent person with a lot of passion for what he does. Very respectable.
If you've seen the Disney movie Frozen (or even just know the song Let it Go) then you have heard of Robert Lopez, you just didn't know it. 😉 Robert and his wife Kristen-Anderson Lopez wrote the music and lyrics to all the songs from that animated Disney film.
She wasn't nagging. She was just asking the questions that she had to ask. She proved she liked it throughout the rest of the interview
I’m late but this is exactly what I was thinking
Man, what a great show. It's right up there with the original "The Producers" as one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Susan Haskins really needs to up her professionalism. I can't believe that she'd so jarringly interrupt Matt, Trey, and Robert--on MULTIPLE occasions--just to express her hate of Mormons. Possibly one of the worst interviewers I've seen. Let your guests talk, and stop trying to push for things they've already told you don't exist within their work.
+vvnn yeh I thought i was the only one noticing this .. what a bitch!
vvnn
Amen! No pun intended,,
Trey and Matt like Mormons.
It's such grating foolishness.
What "hatred of Mormons"? Historically (some would say currently) women have not been treated as equals in the culture, to put it mildly. It says in the book that black skin was a curse; the church lagged behind the rest of the society in accepting black people as equals. Aren't people even allowed to state facts? Are you referring to her comment that the beliefs are "not too smart"? That wasn't polite, but it didn't even approach "hatred," and you know, if you are going to go around professing wild tales to the world, which have been disproved, you have to be ready to take some criticism. Have you seen the Mormon South Park episode, the soundtrack of which is Parker going, "dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb"? Is THAT "hatred"?
This show feels like the sort of thing you would see being mocked in South Park.
Only musicals I've ever seen are the ones they did and i can say Book of Mormon is still god damn hilarious. Dudes have been making me laugh my ass off for almost 30 years.
My brother in law was a mormon missionary. He is a wonderful husband and father. My sister picked a wonderful man.
To clarify, there are good mormons that follow the "rules" that are not fanatics.
+Brett Powers to clarify, no one cares.
watched the whole video, matt and trey are legends!
I feel that the interviewers were dismissing Robert Lopez, an EGOT winner. Who are these people again?
Thank you!
This lady has no idea that FLDS and LDS are different religions...
Are they really though?...one just has the word fundamentalist in front of it...and we’re the same thing until very recently in modern history.
Seriously! Flds and lds are completely different.
@Dan Palmer
They’re a little different
Stop trying to separate yourself from the past
They share a recent common ancestor, and the FLDS lives more according to the founder's original conception of what the religion should be.
@@billscannell93 Do you have a source for the Flds being more accurate to Joseph smith’s teachings?
I love these guys!
This female producer is so hateful. Good God. She is just a hate-filled bigot. She makes these guys look like saints. They actually treat Mormons with a lot of respect.
She really wanted them to just hate on Mormons!
I could sit here and listen to Trey and Matt talk for hours and hours on end. They're such smart, switched on guys, way ahead of their time and always consummate professionals and true gents. Is there anywhere with interviews like this minus the fucking bell-end interviewers?
These two supposed critics, have obviously never seen an episode of South Park.
As someone who was abused by the Mormon church for 36 years, I love this musical as it brilliantly and brutally roasts and exposes the church in a fun South Park style way. I hope they do more Mormon content because they’ve only barely scratched the surface of what they could do. I give it 10/10❤
The host clearly doesn't know anything about Matt and Trey if he thinks that they are new to musicals. They've been writing musicals since they were in university. Unbelievable.
Thank you ☺️ for the laughs !
Bravo Bravo 🌹
Matt and Trey are too classy
super high quality!!!!!!!
Trey and Matt are so cool!
lol you can tell the interviewers are really uncomfortable because Matt and Trey are completely different types of people, especially in there sense of humor and now there part of something these guys care about and are really successful in it
in there minds there thinking "why the hell are these guys apart of musical theater? this isn't right"
oh man love Baseketball as a kid!
You get a new companion on average every 3 to 4 months.
i wish more ppl would take this view. Yous sir are a very smart man
All I need is my girl and my truck,. and some Rogers and HAMMERSTEEEIINNNN!!
Cool interview
Wow, Susan Haskins is laughably unprofessional. Doesn't even know the difference between Mormons and cults that haven't had anything to do with the LDS church in decades. It's fine to dislike something, but educate yourself first please. It's ironic that Matt and Trey are the ones who wrote an "offensive" (debatable) musical about Mormonism but Susan is the one person on this stage who appears to be bigoted against Mormons.
I don't think she qualifies as "bigoted" for criticizing aspects of Mormon culture that have been, or still are, bigoted. Also, I think anyone who is completely honest about the history will admit that the cults you reference are closer to the original conception of the founder, than the mainstream, modern church is.
I think criticizing a culture, or the ideas people actually hold, is very different than presupposing things about them based on inherent characteristics like race, gender, etc. People are not born with their ideas. If someone professes belief in wild things that have been disproved, criticizing those beliefs does not equate to being bigoted toward that person.
I like the way Matt Stone says "Fidd-e-ler" on the Roof.
"Buckle up buccaroos!!!!!'
That intro music is completely insane
To add to my last comment, if anybody finds the Book of Mormon Broadway fascinating, there is another movie I would recommend. It is pretty comical. It was made by a Mormon about missionaries that went to I want to say Holland. It is called "the Best Two Years." It gives a pretty accurate depiction of what missionaries go through at least in Europe. It is actually quite funny and has shows the interesting dynamics that can surface between companionships in a mission.
Saw it, it was pretty good
Brett Powers
Another good movie made by a Mormon about Mormons is Brigham City.
A murder mystery.
Another is The RM
Best two years is hilarious. Both as a an active Mormon and as an exmormon. I’ll always enjoy that movie😂
When that guy asked what it was like to work with amateurs, I thought he was referring to his interviewing
I can’t wait for Scientology the Musical!
I saw this at the Kennedy Center when I visited my brother recently. I have to say it was entertaining, but that is one jacked-up show. But knowing who created it, one cannot be surprised.
Its sad because Trey and Matt didn't create The Book Of Mormon as hate for the Mormon religion. They put it out as almost like a fascination love letter to Mormons for how kind the can generally be despite the crazy stories they believe. Trey and Matt make jokes about people and ideas... they're not bad people like this clown of a woman is. Just because you make a joke about something doesn't mean you hate it. I guess that's what this woman thinks though. She should go watch the All About Mormons episode. Just because you think a religion is dumb doesn't mean you have to be an actual dick to people when they're not even doing anything to anyone. The whole point of the episode and the musical is how the Mormonism can definietly be seen as silly and dumb, but also fascinating to learn about and can be an engaging experience to talk to actual Mormons. The musical was never about "haha look how stupid Mormons are"... it was "yea..the stories are silly and what not, but the Mormon religion and Mormons in general are fascinating nice people who want to help, so who gives a shit". That's pretty much the message.
oh i can not wait for you to understand
Yes, there are definitely jokes in this portrayal that only mormons will get.
No actually I've met in person Matthew and Trey and they were pretty pedantic in making clear they despise religion and have intent to mock it despite how interested they are in the Mormon faith. It is an untouched gold mine of humor in Treys own words.
There are endless possibilities to poke fun at Mormonism. I can say that as an ex Mormon after spending 36 years in the church before getting kicked out for Tourette’s. I wish Matt and Trey would do more Mormon content because they have only scratched the surface of what they could do.
@daccord1 I wouldn't worry -- It's a huge hit, which means it'll be touring sooner or later.
Thank you good Christian. We have now defeated that heathen and eternal bliss awaits for us in the arms of our Father.
Good Lord the lady host keeps trying to demonize the mormons
these hosts are excruciating to listen to. imagine if every dude went around telling us how good at his job he was and this woman is so miserable, even in her compliments, which may have been the first one to give of her life.
yes you can. its on the southpark website streamed for free
Hey, Matt and Trey, when are you doing a musical about the koran?
Asking for a friend .
Matt and Trey- "please don't put me in the opening"
I think Robert Lopez knew to say that somehow like "Oh my next musical is gonna be about Mormons and Joseph Smith..." and then of course they're gonna bite for that. He just wanted to work with them. UNDERSTANDABLE. And thank God man they created a masterpiece together. I hope the next one is about Scientology. But I am afraid it won't be because they're famously litigious meaning they will SUE just about anyone that even dares speak out against them. They're that controlling of everything.
Finally seeing it tomorrow in New Orleans!
It is true that it is against the rule to leave a companion's side other than not going to the bathroom...etc.
I'm Mormon and I don't find their jokes offensive. I agree that Mormons are a very strange group of people and it's really fun to laugh at our strange beliefs.
Just to clarify, you are not with the same companion for two straight years--thank goodness!
Oh yeah only having one companion would be awful😂 . I had about 11-12 companions I think.
The male interviewer sounds like his voice run at double speed.
If this god of yours were so mighty and awesome then he could figure out a way to not allow me to doubt it.
Who are you talking to, nerd
Baseketball was one of the greatest comedies ever
It's OBVIOUS these two supposed critics have never watched South Park. Their questions are those of someone who has heard of the show and the mainstream opinion about how supposedly offensive it is but have never watched it to find out how moral it actually is.
23:57 what did Trey say? I couldn’t understand it
The intro music feels like a sophisticated panic attack
I hope the book of mormon will do some sort of tour or something lol
or atleast release a movie of it- Or i'll never get to see it cuz I live in Cali
