There used to be a local theatre group in my hometown that would organise coach trips to the west end to see shows. Me and my family were members but the majority of people in attendance were retired and they would go along to every single show, regardless of what it was and evidently with no prior knowledge of the story etc. My friend and I were in utter hysterics when we saw Book of Mormon, not jut because its a hilarious show but because we looked around at the unsuspecting old people in bewildered disbelief as the cast sing "f*ck God right in his c*nt" barely 20 minutes in 😂
I love Matt and Trey, and I'm not a Mormon in any way, but the BoM musical just wasn't funny to me. Really bland and hammy compared to everything else they've done. I've never seen a Broadway show before so maybe this is mocking them in some way that's lost on me, but I didn't enjoy it. Cannibal was a much better musical (I know it's a film and not a stage production, but whatever).
