Finally a show that’s not “Hollywooded up” and actually shows what it actually takes to do a job rather than the shows that build a car in a week! I actually had people tell me that it shouldn’t take that long because they saw it on TV ! I had to explain that that was fantasy not reality!
‘In one hour on tv they repainted the whole car, rebuilt the engine and sold it and you’re trying to tell me you’ll have my car for a day to change the clutch’
Bad Obsession Motorsport did something a while back where they timed how long it took to make a single bracket for Project Binky. It took ages... People want everything straight away these days, but the secret of a good RUclips channel is making that longer process exciting to watch. It’s possible - as people like Edd and BOM have proved. It’s actually a relief - when I work on my car now, I work it out in terms of days, because I know somewhere there’s going to be a bolt that fights me or it turns out I have to take the ball joints out to put in new shocks - and I don’t feel like a failure because it takes two days to change my rear beam bushes when that guy in the video did it in fifteen minutes.
If you can still find it, the "an X is born" is really good for this. Quite old now, but I watched the guy make a 100" Land Rover/Range Rover Hybrid and it was superb to watch! It was called "A 4x4 is born" but there are others.
I'm really impressed by the sound mixing in these episodes. There's a lot of people chattering at the same time, and it's really well mixed to get it right and relevant. Well done, whoever you are, you're a star!
I really enjoyed the comedic detail with the triumphant music during the actual body lift. Every time the lifting is paused, the musich slows down and then stops. Bravo 👏 👏👏
When I worked at a garage in the late 90s, I got a sliver of rust in my eye. Neglected to wear goggles. Stayed there for a couple weeks and turned a part of my eye brown from rust. Very painful. Had to sit in a contraption at the eye doctor for 2 hours wide awake while he dug it out with a needle. Always wear safety goggles!
Ditto I was 15 it was my brothers MG Magnette, helping him with an exhaust, really painful, took 3 visits to the Eye Hospital, to sort, so yes safety glasses every time.
Oh yes the stabilising contraption at the eye doctor and milling out the metal splinter out of your eyebal experience. everytime you shut your eyelids it hurts bad. I had safety goggles on while i was working with an angle grinder and a piece of metal shot underneath my goggles in my right eye.
Edd, I realize that this sounds like yet another fan post, but I gotta say, you really have hit your stride with this show. This is now by far the BEST "DIY" automotive show anywhere, on any media. Even though I'm not able to work on my cars any more for various reasons, I still anxiously look forward to seeing each new episode to live vicariously through you and the rest of your cohorts to learn new stuff and discover what new "shenanigans" you all get into. As much as I loved Wheeler Dealers specifically for your detailed, informative presentations, Workshop Diaries is infinitely better, and I wish you continued success as you grow the show.
As they rolled out the chassis I took one look at it and thought this will make 'Project Binky' look like a Hollywood Half-hour Turnaround! It's still great to watch none the less, well done you guys!
This series is absolutely the best thing Edd's done. It's a true reflection of the trial and error process we all go through in restoring our cars, obviously with the addition of a ramp, all the right kit, and 3 or 4 more mates than most of us can cajole into assisting us.
that little section where you are just talking around lunch on foldable chairs really reminds me of the time i did work experience at a metal fab workshop
What i saw ? Watching a couple of men disconnecting several nuts and bolts and wires in 20 minutes time. Do I love your show Ed? Hell yeah ! Ed, massive thanks for your entertaintment and teaching. You and ChrisFix are my top inspiration in terms of car maintenance and servicing. Keep doing the great job!
I used to be a mechanic I loved it had to give it up at age 40 I'm 42 now gave up due to fybromyalgia and dupytrens contracture of my hand this video brought back precious memories of all the lads mucking in and helping on the big jobs. It also made me wish I was there with you guys helping out. Thanks edd an the guys awesome video loving the series.sorry for long comment
the world thanks you for covering up all of your midland's midriff(black country black hole) with some coveralls, your belated sartorial discretion is much appreciated! LOL @21:09
Brilliant! love this project what makes it special is all the guys together muck`in in! well done Edd this one has jumped to the top of my "youtube car soap episodes"! in fact ive dropped ALL the American car resto`s as they are 45 mins larking about and 15 minutes actual work! of course you can still have a laugh on the way! please don`t change a thing! well done buddy!
Yes! Got it. 21:09 "The world thanks you for covering up all of your Midland's midriff (Black Country black hole) with some coveralls, your belated sartorial discretion is much appreciated!" But to be honest, no idea why it is there and what they mean to say.
My answer to the "Ask Everyone" question is a '67 Chevelle SS. I had one in my high school years into the mid-80's when the engine needed a rebuild. I wanted to do a frame off restoration but as a broke 20-something I ended up selling to a collector rather than just letting it rust away. I actually saw one that looked exactly like mine on a Barrett auction a few years back. Who knows, it may well have been mine.
Jet washing all that underside of the body with a powerful degreaser and then applying a textured Matt black coating (of some sort) sounds like a good idea.. Focus your main attention on bringing the frame up to powder coating standards.. 👍
21:09 The world thanks you for covering up all of your Midland's midriff (Black Country black hole) with some coveralls, your belated sartorial discretion is much appreciated !
Satisfying result there lads! However, young Alex needs to be given the floor to tell us what he drives, what his dream car is and what he has worked on before this - poor guy was left out! Unless he’s very shy and asked to be skipped, then I take it all back! PS; in those safety glasses, Paul looked like Ali G’s dad! 😂
I loved at the start of the show where all you could hear are the guys mumbling and softly talking with one another. The buzz of all the bodies was a thrill. Great job guys and i can not wait to see how this rebuild goes.
Ah, those now infamous words: "Job for another day"...😦 I think this RR series should be called *Range Rover:* The Famous Five. With the theme tune to last of the summer -beer- wine. So many what ifs with this Rangey. Will be interesting to see how far the dreaded rust has spread. This will be a looong journey. So much to do. Will be keeping an eagle eye on precedings.. Good stuff 👍
Love following the new channel Edd now that you've long since stopped doing 'you know what'. I learn so much from watching how you tackle things. Especially enjoy seeing you more regularly wearing safety glasses...cheers, all the best.
As someone who patched up and rebuilt a defender only to decide a new chassis would have been a better idea so unbuilt and rebuilt again.. I’m looking forward to seeing edd tackle similar jobs! For edd repairing makes more sense for views.. for everyone else, 2 grand on a galvanised chassis is a no brainer if you’ve gone this far.
Alot of commenters have said that. A new chassis is the way to go. As you say Edd fixing the chassis rather than replace would make some good educational content. It'll be interesting how far gone that chassis is. Does look very Cadbury's flake...
It's alarming seeing unprotected metal turned into unprotected corrosion and then into unprotected holes. It's a British spec car, so it should have been built for lousy British weather. I'm obsessive about injected or sprayed in/on gunge. Waxoyl's my favourite because it's not expensive and it really does work (every box, every plate, every fixing, every cavity, every weld, every nut and bolt. Get it sprayed!). I'm not sure why people think a quick puff of primer is going to be effective for the next 30 years of mud and salt and crud. The back of a fresh weld will be rotting and crusty within 6 months. I like to see a good layer of wax everywhere and, more importantly, everywhere I CAN'T see. 🙂
@@EleanorPeterson I remember I had a business appointment with the owner of a UK Land Rover dealership in the 1980's. I was looking round the showroom while I was waiting. There was a brand new Freelander in there and I was staggered to see so many fittings un-painted and already starting to show signs of corrosion. So no surprise to see this Range Rover is a rotten as a pear. That was supposed to be a quality vehicle!

Excellent, another great episode, this is going to be a great to project to follow. I'm really enjoying having you back on the our screens. I thought I would share my method for dealing with old brake lines, that I know are going to be replaced. This is going to seem a bit savage! I use bolt cutters just above the Flexi joints, a couple of inches up. When you cut through the metal line, the way the cutters cut, they crimp both sides of the pipe, effectively sealing the ends, no dripping brake fluid and no wrestling with corroded seized joints. I also take as much fluid out of the reservoir as possible to. Looking forward to the next vid!
Back in the early 80s I was running a Series II swb and from time to time had to buy various parts. I was put off by LR's prices and generally bought from other suppliers. Ironically, my day job at that time allowed me to wander around the Lode Lane site where there were tubs full of parts, but it was strictly hands off!
This series gives me strong aspirations to be part of a group of lads still messing with stuff like this in 20, 30, 40 years. I can't imagine anything better to do on a weekend. Well done. Now it's all about removal of drive train and getting the frame totally solo for welding.
I love it. It’s so raw and not all polished up and edited to look like Hollywood. And great to see Paul back.

Outstanding job on the separation there. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Great team. Awaiting next chapter. I love classic cars and enjoy real mechanics working on them. Thanks Edd from sunny Spain.
AKA- Making a Range Rover fly! Did the same with my rustbucket '70 Beetle a decade ago, it's still in pieces thus far.
Well, that’s the easy part done! Good work and good luck! Can’t wait for the next instalment
i remember project binky had this level of rust .....
you gonna need a shit ton of brackets to attach it back together

Indeed. Makes zero sense if the goal is simply to restore it. Given the goal is YT views, then this path is the way to go.
