  • This was the happiest day when they brought our house. It is a 14 x 40 double lofted barn that we are going to do a shed to home conversion for a tiny house. We will be doing everything ourselves some things I know how to do and I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff that I’m going to learn with this huge DIY project. It was custom built for us I wanted to 2 x 6 studs instead of 2 x 4 for the purpose of having more insulation in the walls to try to be more efficient and not use as much electricity because everything is going to be 100% solar powered with battery back up. We also had them install a moisture barrier between the outside metal and the studs that was called double bubble and it had a insulating value of R-6. We tried to do things the best we could with the funds that we had.

I am getting a 14' by 40' size one soon. Same state, but nearly 7,000 ft in the mountains. Smart move, brother!!! 👍

That’s exciting for you. We are only 4600 feet so you’ll get a bit colder than us down here.

Congrats on the new home. I've been researching steel buildings for combo garage and living space. I think it's a great option. The double-bubble should reflect a lot of heat from the sun and prevent condensation from building up on the inside walls too. I look forward to seeing how your conversion turns out, and learn a few thing from you.

Thank you! We are working away on it. I am trying to record everything that we do to put it on here. There is so much more to do but one day at a time. We were looking at doing a metal building that had a shop on one side and the house on the other but we are trying to do this build debit free. We are going for an old barn theme on the inside so we will se how it comes out.

Love Emerson buildings. Still love my 200 sq ft shed they brought 3 years ago now. Our man Trayvon is real good on that mule for sure. Way to go folks!

Oh yes we are very pleased!!! They are very good at what they do and yes it seems like it is second nature for him on the mule. Thank you!

I have a 16x40 also. Pad under it is road base packed down with 3/4 minus rock in top. Then 2 bricks stack with flat brick on top. Many, many of them. Smile
How did you install plumbing with it being so low to ground?
Mine is built by Menonites and they were awesome with delivery and set up.
Congratulations. I am taking sooo much longer in finishing interior. Paying as I go. Smile also do much of the work myself.

I thought about doing ours a little higher, and I kind of wish I did, but I didn’t. Luckily the way the land goes down on one side it works to our advantage where we placed both bathrooms and the kitchen and I just had to dig a little bit into the ground And we have not had any problems with drainage at all. Yes we are doing everything ourselves as we have the money there’s still so much more to do but we are getting closer to being done. It has been an adjustment for a family of four to downsize to this type of living but so far we are doing great. Thank you

Do these sheds converted into homes have to be approved under code from the county with an approved building permit? Also I heard you have to have a septic system installed before you can live on off grid property ? How easy it is to get that done and how much do these cost ?
