If you are going down this road, you might want to look at the Citizen Chronomaster watches. The second hand tick but it's high accuracy quartz +/- 5 seconds per year but also powered by their eco-drive, so you don't need to change batteries. On top of that is a perpetual calendar. So it is "set and forget" until the next turn of the century. Did I mention that Bulova was purchased by Citizen in 2008?
I am currently in possession of a Seiko LX titanium spring drive watch. I have had it for four years now and it is still functioning flawlessly. It is a high-end Seiko watch with a spring drive movement, but it is not very well-known.
Fun fact, Seiko used to have a true smooth sweeping quartz movement under the 5S21 and 5S42 calibres for a very very short period of time before it was ditched for spring drive.
Wow, thank you for this comment. Somehow I didn't realize that they had released so many models utilizing these movements. Looks like I'm down the 5s21 rabbit hole. If you have any references on the history of the movements, or any information for someone new to them, please send it my way!
@@SecronSeven there isn't much history as I think they where only in the market for two years or so, so they are extremely rare, but still can be found on eBay. The 5S42 is the more accurate movement as it uses a higher oscillating quartz crystal inside. Although they are powered by quartz and a battery, everything else about the movements are arguably more mechanical than most other mechanical movements, the movements actually beat 4 times per second unlike conventional quartz which usually beat at 1 beat per second. The 4 turns of the quartz movement are used to wind up a constant force mechanism (yes you heard that right, a constant force mechanism that are only featured in haute horological watches) so that the energy/tick released is even, the reason for this is because they engineered these with a smoothing mechanism that uses a mini spinning rotar which is slowed down by a viscous fluid adjacent to the constant force mechanism so that an equilibrium is reached to the point that the seconds hand glides with a true smoothing sweep.
@P4NGC4KEZ. That is absolutely insane. I'm only seeing a couple of models on eBay, mainly the dolce. Any idea if there's a lost somewhere of all the models featuring this movement? I must have one. If it's a dolce then ok fine, but I'd prefer something a bit larger.
Bulova is so underrated. I first got my speedy and GS spring drive and later picked up my snoopy lunar pilot from bulova for under $300! Definitely great value of a watch and looks amazing.
Bulova have been around for well over a century. They released the Seville in the 1970s, this is just an upgrade. At less than 10% of the cost of the GS it at the very least warrants being held on to as a daily beater.
Spring Drive is the only completely smooth sweep. There is no "tick" of the second hand. Bulova's Precisionist ticks 16 times per second and is imperceptible to the unaided eye.
Wrong. Bulova released smooth sweep movements that they called Tuning Fork movements back in 1961. The Accutron Space View was the first and most famous watch to utilize them. Also, they're freaking awesome. Well, the vintage pieces are.
@@wmen48 I don't think you understand what I meant, I might still be wrong, but I was saying the assertion that spring drive movements are the only smooth sweep is wrong, I wasn't referring to the precisionist part of his comment at all.

How much does it cost to have the Grand Seiko serviced and how often does it have to be serviced two questions I would need to know before parting with my money.
I had the same issue that you mentioned in your video between bulova vs Grand Seiko many times ago. My thoughts went to appreciate the spring drive models form the entry levels, to then add in my wishlist the evolution 9 SLGA021 (I know that it is pricey 😬). Buying a Grand Seiko on retail is a No No and I think a discount from an AD would be impossible. Anyways, my struggle right now is that on December I have to decide to buy a GS or a chronograph like the tag Heuer Carrera with the heuer 02 caliber, the new Sinn 903, a Laco Kiel or the alpina AL-730NS4AE6B. God help me, the time will come because I don’t have a chrono in my collection 😂

Deleted my previous comment on the video because I feel like it came from a place of misunderstanding regardless I think it’s a great video and you should definitely check out some bulovas other offerings especially their accutron range of watches. I think their electrostatic movement which came out in 2019 is a great example of bulova still innovating under the citizen brand. I think you would love how unique the accutrons look compared to everything else.
That would be very tough to engineer I imagine. Both of those are revolutionary proprietary technology, which isn't a huge issue from the proprietary standpoint because Citizen acquired Bulova, but making a movement like that either wouldn't be feasible from an efficiency standpoint (because the beatrate of that movement requires a lot of energy) or it would just be far too big of a movement and wouldn't fit in a standard case size. Of course, I could be wrong and maybe we'll see that, but I imagine it would cost quite a bit in research and development for them to produce it.
I believe this is the smallest they've ever been able to make the precisionist movement. Until now it's been huge ugly thick chunky watches. They're getting close.
it works on large tool watches like the lunar pilot (even though it's still very heavy for me to wear all day) because even in competitors those watches will often be 42mm.
