How 'No Way Home' Pulled Off Spider-Man's Bridge Fight Against Doctor Octopus | Movies Insider

- "Spider-Man: No Way Home" first introduces legendary Marvel villain Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina) on a New York City bridge where he faces off against Peter Parker (Tom Holland). Behind the scenes, the cast and crew filmed on a set in Atlanta and the rest of the bridge and skyline were created in part by Digital Domain. The final fight scene was achieved through a close partnership of visual and practical. Because Doc Ock's mechanical arms were completely CG, special effects supervisor Dan Sudick had to make actions like dropping a cement pipe and throwing a car into water barrels look like they had the right amount of force. Then, visual effects supervisor Scott Edelstein and his team had to create entire shots from scratch if the trajectory of a stunt wasn't correct. And while Digital Domain used digital doubles of Spider-Man for some of the more dangerous stunts, Tom Holland still pulled off many of his own moves on set.

How ‘No Way Home’ Pulled Off Spider-Man’s Bridge Fight Against Doctor Octopus | Movies Insider - Развлечения
It’s crazy how far visual effects have come since the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man’s.
Fr its mind boggling.
I was thinking the same thing!
@@ashleyb1116 😂
@@ashleyb1116 Well it’s true, there’s no comparison between the two. Don’t get me wrong I loved the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man’s, but the Tom hollands effects are obviously the best we’ve seen to date. And that’s just a testament to the times.
@@farandbeyond4628 They make it all look so real I’m no expert but this can’t be easy to pull off. I can’t imagine the time these effects artist have to spend to pull of just one scene
It’s so strange to think that most of it gets replaced with CG in the end. I’m sure most executives probably ask why these things need to be filmed practically at all. But the reason it looks so good is because the CG department has a near perfect one to one comparison to base their animations off of. It’s both impressive to see the craftsmanship as well as the fact that we’ve finally reached what seems to be the perfect balance of CG/practical integration.
As some VFX artists have said, its always better to shoot on set and not do everything in post. You get a certain realness that you wouldn't get if fully done in CGI. And even if its not used you get a great reference for when you gotta remake it in CG
It's for inflating the budget for no reason.
I would be depressed to be a special effects guy putting all I’ve got into make practical effects just to have it get replaced by CGI by the VFX crew. No wonder the art is dying or making mistakes that the VFX guys have to fix, they don’t have the motivation like they used to.
@@davidswanson5669 true
@@nsaurabh25 The movie net them 1.9B out of a film budget of 200M. The movie was impressive to look at and worth the price of admission. They budgetted fine imho
CGI & post production is literally an art-form fair play to all the Marvel & Sony Staff I absolutely love learning how they made these riveting scenes come to life it’s extremely fascinating thanks guys!
Cringed so hard at the "we had to remove the practical car from inside of all that water". Poor bastards.
Marvel and Sony don’t make the visual effects. They’re the client and hire visual effects studios for that.
All the movie is basically a big green/blue screen with the actors looks like monkeys
Wheres her driver in that car? Nobody was there.

Can we just say how amazing of an actor Tom Holland is to do a lot of his stunts so perfectly
I really appreciate how much Tom's gymnastics background is incorporated into his Spidey stunts
The amount of work put into this movies is tremendous. You'd think twice before criticising them.
But people don’t lmao
Effort or amount of work does not make a bad movie any good. If the end product is horrible then it'll remain horrible indefinitely, no matter how much effort or work was put into it.
@@tsarnicholasii419 you trying to say NWH is bad?
No, I was just stating the fallacy of the argument. The quality of the product and the effort/work that was put into it are two different criteria. If I made a pizza that looked and tasted awful, you wouldn't think or say that it was good even if I committed a titanic amount of effort and work into making that pizza. At the end of the day, a bad product is a bad product.
@@tsarnicholasii419 even if it ends up horrible, we'd have to respect the hard work and effort put into it
God i imagine the stress from just one frame, shoutout to everyone behind the scenes 👏
I honestly miss the arm puppets. But I'm impressed.
I feel like acting with the puppet tentacles feel more fun
Though I get why they used CG, Alfred Molina isn't like he was back then
Always love watching the behind the scenes in movies like this! Makes you appreciate it more!
Wait until u see how much money they made.
@@fynkozari9271 oh I know!
@@fynkozari9271 and that means we can't appreciate it?
I drive through this route every other week. Freaking amazing how accurate it looks.
While I Love the practical tentacles from Spider-Man 2, the advances in technology really allowed them to show Ock full tilt with every tentacle doing something different at the same time at incredible speeds. Really showcased how unprepared MCU Spidey was to go up against Ock.
Each tentacle doing something different is showcased much better in Spider-Man 2, and the speed of Doctor Octopus' arms is also greater in the original film. What are you talking about? Think before speaking.
Also, Doc Ock wasn't fighting as badass as he used to. Compare his bank fight scene and train fight scene from Spider-Man 2, to that of any Doc Ock scene in the MCU. You'll see how powerful and agile he previously was, which this movie didn't showcase well.
I'm not saying it has to showcase. Probably as far as my understanding Doc Ock didn't need to put much effort to beat Tom Holland's Spider-Man anyway. While for Tobey's version, I think by now we know exactly why he has to (put his best effort to beat Spidey).
@@kumarsaurabh9216 Holland’s Spider-Man is stronger than Tobys and the fight scene was better than anything in Spider-Man 2 imo
You people talk like there weren't times when the tentacles were fully digital in SM2 when many times they were.
@@kumarsaurabh9216 you insolent child. Do not speak to me of these things. I was there when it was written. I saw that movie when it first came out and saw it a billion times after. Watched all the bus footage & listened to all the commentaries. There ain't a single scene where you see the tentacles go full tilt like they do with No Way Home. It simply wasn't possible both physically or digitally.
Look how gracefully Tom Holland is 4:13 10:10
Every single shot involves after effects need to be designed and operated perfectly. Great job, such a wonderful team!!!
The simple and primary reason for using a CG or digital version of a costume is entirely down to what is possible, and what looks best within the constraints of a given shot. "For masks, there is generally a physical component, unless there is a need to pull them on or off very quickly.
It's because of the faceshell 😐😐😐😐 it's either cgi or a cut shot.
Doc’s robotic arms were better in Spider-Man 2. That’s because they were practical.
Props for the VFX team making C.G.I with Practical effects.
Ah, tennis ball, the cast member everyone forgets 😉
Amazing. It's crazy how much effort went into just one second from the movie.
Props to the vfx and sfx teams, what they do might as well be computer magic, but 'embellishments' and making big changes after everything has already been shot and then altering the scene digitally is exactly what's holding this movie back. Accepting real life physics and not altering the in-camera look as much would in my opinion only serve the movie better. Don't get me wrong, I loved NWH but some things just look too animated.
Pluses and minuses to everything
I think original "tube on the car" with only dust around looks far more cool than with cg fire and explosions
The car was CGI, thats why it disappeared in the water.
I still think Raimi's balance between vfx and practical effects provided a bit more realism as the puppets and environment made things seem a little more grounded and realistic!
The work they put is insane
Feels really great to see how much attention to detail is being employed here.. It basically translates as being respectful to the audience.. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
You know it's so good when you mixed practical with cg
Imagine spending all that time money and effort for that perfect shot just for it to be made completely CGI 😂
It would look unnatural and strange without it
3:40 Tom Holland was made to be Spider-Man. Stan Lee himself said Tom Holland was exactly how he imagined Peter Parker.
He probably said that for good PR. He said the same positive things about tobey and andrew in the past.

Much appreciation to all nerds..wont be judging movies too harshly considering the work that it takes to give us masterpiece entertainment..
Wow.... The behind the scenes team did a lot of hard work ❤❤❤ !!!
Kudos to them 👍👍👍 !!!!!
crazy how far we've come since the first Spiderman movie
it all looks amazing
Bridge Fight is my all time favorite scene, I think this looks very cool and you all did a great job. 👏
These are the people that deserve more credit
Wow, this is really incredible !!
*This is art and dedication*
Iconic bridges fight???
So iconic that i Forget it
Just amazing how much effort goes into these movies.
Damnn!,thank u soo much guys! U did the best for spiderman ❤
Behind the scene team’s effort were often overlooked and given to the actors, camera man, director. But this videos shows the importance of the different department of a movie too!
We have two types of people. One who loves a movie with minimal cgi and more realism and the other who just loves cgi and appreciates it even the a cgi spiderman walking they appreciate it
I loved this fight so much
some people have no idea how many people and how much is put into work behind the scenes to make these movies. They only think of the actors, etc.. its the people behind makes the real magic and how many different jobs to make it amazing.
this surely gonna reach 1M views 💀
Would be nice to see Tom Holland on Mission Impossible.
Super work done.
From doc standing on two tenticles to pipe falling like a baseball bat tiny details they paid attention hats off guys 🙌🔥
They are so creative.
This video is ridiculously insightful
So basically everything done practically was replaced by CGI in the end.
Except doc's body
yeah but the bases actually help with the cgi. it gives the team a visual of what it would look like if it was done in real life. references are really valuable yknow.
besides this is only one portion of the movie. less action packed scenes which is the majority of the movie would make it more feasible to only use less cgi.
So basically it’s just CGI-BOY 3: Featuring actual good actors
@@MKultraInstinct lol hater.
I don't agree with shooting a practical car into the water barrels, then turning it into CG because the shot went slightly off. Why couldn't they have just lived with it and saved them time and money. You had to live with it before CG became so pervasive
This is an awesome video.
5:29 👈🏼😁 I didn’t know Oprah was in the movie !!
I love the smart people that do VF work so crazy what u can do on a computer
This would have been nice on a bonus disc in the bluray release
If Sony ever make them again.
Wouldnt it be cool if you could watch the same movie from different angles? Like if you could control from which side you want to watch just how they showed it in the video.
Like in ready player one?
cool but too time consuming
Hats off
Disgusting that so many practical effects got replaced by CGI models. It’s wastes the efforts of the special effects crew and doesn’t allow them to take credit for on screen magic. This is what happens when studios have too much money.
everytime i cross the gwb i cant help but think of spiderman
Michael Bay: explosions? nah, TOO EASY
i like how we devolved from Nolan flipping a truck to this.
Damn this is so cool. Yeah, now that it was highlighted, that shot at 6:28 looked off. The barrels blew up way faster than the car hitting them, so they had to use cgi to make the timing better. Amazing
Very interesting video..... 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
"The members of the team worked so hard to get the stone pipe to fall on the car like baseball bat... and then it was all replaced with cgi" - The story of the cgi.
Marvel always use CGIi. Most of the things u see in Marvel movies are just cartoon its depressing.
@@fynkozari9271 whats wrong with it? they still make good movies

For all the memes and everything about the cgi, this secuence was amazing
All that practicality and it still looked fake lol how do they manage to make a real object look fake 😂😂😂. Love this movie btw
Did u watch the video? Or are u just slow?
Yeah a man with super strength and spider powers fighting Alfred Molina with metal tentacles is looks fake omg
It's quite strange how the cars look CGI when it's not... Maybe bad filter? Meh I ain't complaining this movie was a gift to all Spidey fans.
Wow Insider you're just amazing at explaining I learnt so many things so this is what happens behind the scenes
Love you Insider
It's such a shame seeing or hearing them say they ultimately had to replace it with a completely CG shot. For example, that pipe landing on the car. So much work went into it, then they ended up doing it in full CG.😣
I felt everything as real only in this movie.
Love this scene, it’s awesome. I like it more than the train fight from Spider-Man 2.
Blasphemy!
I have always kept spidermans VFX above than any other movies
perfectionist at god level
7:58 - i love that you have to keep saying "assistant vice chancellor" instead of just character, or actress. lol
'the detail' in this movie is amazing
This is the scenes where Doctor Octopus Fish out of Water Storyline begin.🙂
How “No Way Home” Pulled Off Spider-Man’s _Nissan_ *Commercial*
they should use another technique, all cgi movements look weightless
Absolutely without a doubt the best movie of 2021 the vfx are top notch acting is top notch and fan Service has never been done that well before it here’s hoping that multiverse of madness has just as much fan service
I thought the VFX were terrible.
@@Owen-ub3fv it was bad at some places but if you can't actually say where it is terrible then your just typing in a vague sentence.
How they pulled off Spider-Man's bridge fight scene: Spend thousands to film things practically then replace it all with CG in post-production
Very nice
0:12 Slow down the speed and you can see the first water barrel explodes before the car even hits it
"You've outdone yourself Sony!"
It would be crazy to see an experimental look at how this would realistically look compared to them calculating and creating the scene that would visually express how well they calculated this without a scientific explanation
if they'd showed this video in my physics class, I would have paid more attention.
I think it's cool how mysterio wears a real-world CGI-Accurate fractal suit in Far From Home, because his whole effect is digitally manipulating himself and the environment
I laughed when VO called Spidey's Web Shooters "Web Blasters" LOL
0:01 what do you mean "iconic" bruh
Wow the carsss
Too much CGi I miss practical stunt
I really love the VFX in Spiderman No way home. but sometimes times you could see where they budgeted some of the scenes. Love the movie though
these men look exhausted bro😂
So basically they did a few things practically, then did not use the practical footage for other than a reference for a fully CG final scene.
i like the tennis ball one
I like Pratical + CGI.
A time will come when actors won't act they ll just be in the movie
How do you guys get all these passes? Do yall have a direct partnership with Marvel ?
Can we talk about Tom Holland doing that roll across the car hood move? Whaaat
Movie critics should know how to use their comment, look at this hard worker visual effect. Such a challenge to make viewers go hype.
“Less is more”
Marvel - “Speak English”
I don’t know if boring is the right word, but it seems like it would be perhaps kind of unsatisfying to act in like just green/blue screen environments like that when even what you do sometimes isn’t used.
With great power, comes great budget.
“Iconic”….
