- If you look at Iron Man's first suit, the Mark 1, and compare it to the hero's nanotech suit from "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," a lot has changed, but it's not just the technology in the world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Animation tech has also evolved in the real world to make this suit possible on the big screen. We spoke with some of the VFX artists who worked on Iron Man’s suit over the past 11 years including Industrial Light & Magic, Weta Digital, Cinesite/Trixter, The Embassy, and Framestore to find out what challenges they faced along the way and how they were able to make the suit look so real.

How Iron Man's VFX Evolved Over 11 Years | Movies Insider - Развлечения
As much as I thought his nano tech suit was cool and innovative, the first Iron Man suits are the ones that stick with me the most since they're the most realistic ones.
Yeah
Yup, they looked so real and had much more detail
It was very "alien tech" like. I agree with you but i wish i could see it in more diferent situations, it would probably be too op because it can transform itself in almost anything tony wants. but it would be awesome anyway
MK-1 was definitely very realistic (except for the flamethrower range), I suppose there are a lot of ppl who are handy enough (and have enough $ and time) would be able to build it.
Was it more realistic in its animation, or simply more realistic in its feasibility in our world...hmm i personally think the nano tech suit is as realistic as you could make a nano tech suit, it's just that the possibility of that liquid metal type of material is so far out of our reach, it makes it seem fake when really, from a design and animation standpoint, it's spot on as perfect as it could be :/
_"This man is BORN to be Iron Man. He looks exactly like what I had in mind, when I created Tony Stark."_
*~ Stan Lee to Robert Downey Jr.*
Mr. Friendship so true pog
So?
Collateral Channel do you have any common sense whatsoever?
I had a subscription to Iron Man and Avengers comics in the 80's. Tony Stark's personality in the comics was always a bit flat. RDJ and John Favreau take all of the credit for making Tony Stark a fascinating and likeable character.
@@cajunboy67 Sure it's a bit flat but there are times that are interesting about comic Tony Stark such as dealing with alcoholism. So that being said, the comic DID reflected on RDJ's dealing with alcoholism and that's why the Iron Man trilogy mentioned his habit a few times. Also, it was used to be distributed by Paramount, not Disney, which it make sense why the movie was different compare to some several MCU movies which it's full of dirty humor and adult themes. Plus terrorism.
Evolved? I'm sorry but Iron Man 1 still has the most realistic (CGI) armor of all of them.
The CGI was flawless until after Avengers 2. It went downhill from there
I completely agree but at the same time I do understand that as the movies went on, the bigger the budget and the cgi demand became much more greater
It's probably the shiny-ness and them wanting the armor to be more "heroic" as opposed to human-like in form.
They just got easier to animate
IP Films bullshit, Thanos looks just as real as the humans
So long story short, over the span of 11 years, RDJ became a voice actor.
Not actually. He still has to do all movements on set with others while wearing a mocap suit
Uh no, he's still acting underneath most of the cgi suit. Guess you didn't pay attention to this video very well.
I'm glad to see that there are still those who don't understand hyperbolic exaggeration for use in humor.
It was a joke.

@aydooknow No he meant that the Mark 1 was made of iron bc tha rest like Mark 2 is made out of gold and titanium alloy.
@aydooknow that too, but i pretty sure he means titanium
He points that out when he is holding a newspaper that says something like “Ironman appears again” and he says something like “we technically it’s a gold-titanium alloy, but I like the sound of it” so that’s how they explain it.
It was not even iron.

In Iron Man 2 my jaw dropped during the suitcase armor sequence. It looked so real and everything made sense visually. One of the many reasons why I don't like the nanotech armor is that it looks like Tony weighs 10 pounds in that thing. It looks very animated/cartoony

People always said that Iron Man 2 is the "worst MCU movie" said Marvel fans. I think it's best that the movie is still important to the MCU despite the writing is sub-par and the villain only exist. The F-1 fight scene with the suitcase is great.
@@poweroffriendship2.0 lmao iron man 2 is really really bad, but I've watched it a lot and I'm kinda starting to like it tbh. its still a lot worse than the other ones, but its better than some movies out there. the movie was important to the structure and the buildup of the MCU tho, and it had some good scenes
Endgame and infinity was suit didn't have a metalic texture. It looked like a tight t shirt. Whereas iron man 1's suit had scratch marks, armor like shape, bends, paint comes off when he gets hit. I just love the first one.
Pretty sure it’s because he was wearing Nanotech armor, it’s supposed to be tighter looking opposed to it being bulkier. I’m guessing that they were going for a sleeker design? Since Tony has been Iron-Man for so long, he’d have to find and make new materials for better more powerful suits.
He changed to nano tech probably because it was way lighter than his older models and easy to carry around since it just sits on his chest?
not sure if they are more realistic, although I feel the same about the early movies. I feel like they are more relatable since we all saw panels and surfaces similar in real life before. The nano-tech stuff is just so far ahead and advanced.
@@philipprudolf8302 yeah because iron man is sci fi and in the comics its also slim and the comics are the source material for the movies

black panther's production team wasted so much time doing the sand particle animation. it's cool and all to look at but that seems less important than getting done the main components of your movie and as a result, you get a short pointless intro, a cool credit sequence and an unappealing looking end fight. that's like a cook focusing on perfecting his mashed potatoes rather than cooking and seasoning the steak, aka the main entree, correctly.

I prefer the CGI in the first Iron Man, even upon rewatch. Somehow they made the endgame suit look like a video game in such an expensive movie.
It’s because they used a lot of a real suit
It’s because they had a huge budget, but barely any time. All the money in the world won’t give you a second more of time.
I think that was the style
Endgame suit looked realistic. Infinity war suit was cartoonish.
Like they said in the video, civil war and age of ultron suits looks cool too but yeah in Iron Man 1 mark 3 suit looks much better over every suits especially the nano ones....it feels much like alien costume though ngl, but i still like it coz it's iron man

The suits are definitely some of the most underappreciated parts of the VFX. The Nano suit was probably my least favorite suit. Something about the older suits and how they came together at his call was super cool. Overall, I loved all of it.
One of the main reasons I liked the Transformers movies is because the auto bots and and the deceptions had so much details in their designs and they looked realistic, it’s the same with Ironman. I also hated his nanotech suit because it looked cartoony and lacked the metallic shine of his previous Ironman suits.
Jamari J it’s lame how he taps his chest and the suit just builds around him. It was way more grounded with the pieces having to be manually connected like a robot.
Pacific Rim suffered from this too. The first film had badass ‘real’ controls on the Jaegers. The sequel had the controls be totally ‘holographic’ CGI and it’s just so much worse.
I agree, although I love the new creative weapons Tony can use with the nanotech suit, the mechanical movement of each piece falling into place is too cool
@@auralian1428 he made his new armour that way due to obvious advances in technology but actually because it's way easier to do that then wait for a bunch of robot arms to put the pieces on for you.
@@auralian1428 but that's not the point 😂 they didn't change his suit for the sake of coolness or aesthetic or whatever. It was a necessary upgrade, u reall think Tony would be facing against Thanos and his army with titanium suits 😂 it was a necessary upgrade, the nanotech suit gave him access to more weapons, and it literally regenerates a few time when its destroyed. its not lame, it was necessary for the plot
Honestly this video just showed how the first Iron Man's CGI AND practical effects hold up better than the newer iterations. Kind of similar to how Jurassic Park still holds up because of its blend of CG and Practical. Sometimes less really is more.
The mark 85 really just reflects how much work they put over the past decade into the final and perfected suit
The amount of creative ways Iron Man has used to change into his suit is truly amazing from a story perspective. My favorite is the helicopter scene in civil war

I disagree. I'd say the Infinity war suit, and the one at the end of Age of Ultron are easily the fakest looking suits, though the cgi on the suits in Iron Man 3 was often pretty bad as well. But it seems like it had more to do with time and/or money constraints in IM3, whereas the IW and AoU suits looking fake probably had more to do with how they designed them.

I think the suits peaked at the Mark III, with a honorable mention of the suitcase suit from Iron Man 2. As a kid, I always liked how he carried the suit in his briefcase, because that's where you keep your business items, and being Iron Man was his business.
I was surprised, seeing Iron Man 3, where he walks up to the suit and steps into it. You'd think he could have a model that was folded into quarters, and when he wanted it, it would unfold as he approached and allow him to step into it.

it's remarkable that ILM only started using image-based lighting techniques in 2009. I remember reading papers about image-based lighting and light probes as early as 2003, and those were in a realtime context.
Then I remember that it takes a number of years for that sort of thing to go from concept to production, and 2009 sounds about right.

Yes! And the homecoming suit
I feel that everything looked better back then
I love how the level of CG & VFX used in MCU & other Hollywood movies has been improved since many years & is still improving & upgrading (which we can see in The Mandalorian's making)
Having seen the suit in all its iterations throughout this movie series, I gotta say the effects for the first Iron Man film still impress me just that much more because there was a blend of a real practical suit with a fully CGI suit. Because of this your mind could never truly pick up where one is being used and the other is not. It also seems to me that having the practical suit used in the film challenged the digital artists to make their animated version not only match the practical suit but also meld convincingly with the live background that the practical suit was shot in (as opposed to generating a virtual set).
Just my thoughts of course.
"I used the suit to destroy the suit!"
I will NEVER get over the first suit up, it was everything and I will never forget it

Let's face it, the CGI on his suit got better over time. The reason why people prefer his older suits is because it's more realistic and has more of an impact on screen. Since IM1's MKII suit, all of it is basically CG. If his newer suits ever seemed sloppy in IW and EG, it's probably due to budget cuts from having so many big name actors on the same screen.
Yeah Thanos got the majority effort, obviously. Pretty much every time he was on the screen, he looked just great. Hulk in Endgame was also quite expressive. However, the rest of the stuff, they did background blurs to prevent anyone from noticing like with Titan in IW. Everything in Titan is purposefully blurred to prevent people from noticing imperfections and also give the artsy background defocus.
@@AnshumanKumar007 I'm sure if they had another solo IM movie, his new suit albeit nanotech will probably blow everyone's socks off
Somewhat, some of their CGI for better. Things like Thanos looks amazing but the CGI on people like Ironman and Spiderman are god awful. You can see a noticeable downgrade compared to some of their other apperences.
the suitcase one amazed me the most. when i saw the nanotech it was cool but i didnt get that feeling like i did watching iron man pirated on winter holidays on my laptop those years ago..
14:14 I'm still amazed that scene was completely digital, Tony wasn't there 🤯
I personally didn't like Tony's Nano suit, as being a bit too unrealistic. The other suits seemed almost as if it could exist in the real world, especially Mark 1. But Mark 50 & 85 were a bit far-fetched compared to it's progression thus far, possibly from the overly excessive use of CG in these last 2 Avenger films
Pretty sure this is a superhero universe but okay
yeah because tony stark had tech that felt like it was from earth but with the tech in infinity war and endgame it felt like he had alien tech that felt super unrealistic and not grounded at all
It's not over excessive use everyone should understand there are imagining things not yeah in "reality" that's why it seems unrealistic if it was seen noone will call it unrealistic
It was a good excuse to do less work for them.
@@retrospace2150 That's irrelevant... Why do people like you not understand this?
Imo suits in Infinity War and Age Of Ultron looked the worst followed by the suit in IM3. It looked great again in Endgame tho while all the older suits were always fantastic
I feel like a part of history. So much innovation and crazy tech went into making it, and we were the witness to the whole process and its evolution.
as someone who has worked in the film industry- and anyone else in the know - who knows-
the key to good fx- is the lighting. and iron mans reflections and lighting seperate it from the pack. amazing.
2008 VFX were so realistics❤️
In my opinion, suits from the first film are still the best and most believable, because they are weighty and bulky. With each new film, suits become mobile and easier to transport/use/put, which takes away this invicibility feeling from the first film
The suits in the first iron man, are the greatest ones! They look the most realistic, even better then the ones from endgame and infinity war. Especially that shot where he blows up the tank and walks away!👌 perfection
I loved Iron man since I was young and saw the animated cartoon and fell in love with the technical aspect of it.
The first films showed a seriously realistic iron man and the nanotech suit completely blew that out of the water
