Physicist Breaks Down The Science Of 10 Iconic Marvel Scenes | How Real Is It? | Insider

- Опубликовано: 2 май 2019
- To celebrate the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” we had physicist (and lifelong comic book fan) Jim Kakalios take a closer look at the physics of the Marvel universe. Here he reacts to 10 memorable scenes from Marvel movies and rates them based on their accuracy. Find out what exactly quantum mechanics, time dilation, Einstein’s theory of special relativity, and spider silk tell us about the superheroes of the Marvel franchise.
Which weapon would you rather have in a fight: Thor’s Mjolnir hammer or Captain America’s shield? Hint: The answer has to do with the conservation of energy - and the sonoluminescence of vibranium. Dr. Kakalios breaks down the physics behind this and many other Marvel phenomena, including Shuri’s holographic car in “Black Panther;” Peter Parker’s spider-webbing train save in “Spider-Man 2;” the multiverse theory of “Doctor Strange;” the role of Pym particles and the Higgs boson in “Ant-Man;” artificial gravity in “Guardians of the Galaxy;” and Tony Stark’s cybernetic helmet and gold-titanium exoskeleton in “Iron Man.” He sheds light on why Carol Danvers doesn’t age from “Captain Marvel” to “Avengers: Endgame;” why the Space Stone is so powerful when yielded by Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War;” and what’s with all the talk of quantum entanglement, quantum tunneling, and “quantum mumbo-jumbo” in “Ant-Man and the Wasp.”
Kakalios is the author of three books - “The Physics of Superheroes,” “The Physics of Everyday Things,” and “The Amazing Story of Quantum Mechanics.” He was a science consultant for Sony’s 2012 film “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Before that, he won an Emmy for his work as a science consultant for the Warner Bros. superhero film “Watchmen.” A physics professor at the University of Minnesota, Kakalios teaches a popular class that uses comic books to illustrate the principles of physics.

I’m glad the professor wasnt just saying “this just a movie” LIKE he’s an actual fan and has seen the movies!! Big ups to this prof!
Ralph Dizon He’s been using superheroes in his lectures for decades and wrote books about them and comic book authors have consulted him. He’s a true fan.
He clearly show a book he made about superheroes from the start
He has a fantastic four tie on
hes been a comic book fan since he was a kid(back in the 60s), he says this in his book.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive Can you tell me about his creations, please? I would love to add his books to my collections.
Scott Lang, "Do you just put the word 'quantum' infront of everything?"
Real life scientist, "Yes. Yes, we do."
That was genuinely what I waited for Fishburn or Douglas to say. I was sad they didn't.
Who was the real life scientist? I certainly didn’t hear that here.
@@profile2047 well idk the professor her?
I can almost see Fishburnes' eyebrows slightly raised as if a bit surprised by the question, as he nods his head and says "yes", then turning to Douglas, who's also nodding(with a shrug and no eye contact).
Definitely a missed opportunity....on a quantum level.
I'll be honest, I would happily watch videos of him reacting to movies. You can tell that he loves movies (especially Marvel movies), he's a great teacher and I can tell he would have a blast explaining it all.
Imagine failing a physics class and then seeing your professor giving an 8 out of 10 to a superhero movie for realism
scientifically realistic
is that bad or something?😂
Well he's more grading the realistic sciences that they reference rather than what is capable now.
No he is talking about scientific realism not humanistic like the time of Renaissance
Imagine being so salty your professor failed you accidentally prove he made the right call.
Drax: *Stands so still that he becomes invisible to the naked eye*

drax is op 😂😂😂🤣
It's funny tho because he has such a hard time seeing stationnary things, colors and other stuff like that so it makes sense that he wouldnt be able to see himself if he were to be perfectly immobile.
But nobody can explain his contender JOHN CENA
Well. If her was perfectly stationary the brain would be less able to see him. Not invisbility. Just being less noticable.
He’s so clearly invested in the comics and the movies but is also a brilliant physicist and has a great sense of humour

True virgin.
Same. I love this guy
I actually read his book years ago. I used it to get one of my co-workers into physics who didn't happen to be much of a reader and even he said he was super intrigued.
What you're seeing in this clip is the same way he's explaining everything in his book. He just goes into more detail. But the general gist is the same - he's using heroes and their powers as reference points and then explains concepts of physics this way. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly; if you liked this clip, go and check out his book. 🙂

Imagine being in a life death situation in an elevator and going like “pick a card, any card!”

I can tell that whoever did the editing for this video had a lot of fun haha.
One thing I think he got wrong is the part in Black Panther at 14:34. He mentions Shuri using a hard light hologram to control the car, but that's not what it is. The solid parts Shuri is interacting with come from a pool of sand like vibranium that can take the form of solid objects, and a hologram of the car itself forms around the physical components. I think they actually do refer to it as a vibranium sand table or something similar at some point in the movie.
Wrong time
Yeah, all the hard points are actual physical objects.
It’s essentially a driving simulator rig, but with a hologram that I don’t think is purely there to give the driver a quick idea of where the vehicle’s corners would extend in the real-world environment.
Imagine you falling in an elevator getting ready for a tragic death and the guy next to you just says:
Hey look at this pipe
That’s the type of outlook on life that I need😂
i would be this guy
That’s exactly what I was thinking when he said that
‘hey VSauce, Micheal here, look at this pipe’
Ceci n’est pas une pipe.
physics will be so much more interesting if our professors gave examples like these.......
Just correct
When any science can be linked to our phisical world that science become interesting. It doesn't matter if it's Literature or Social Studies. But it needs to be interesting if don't nobody will remember it.

This professor is GREAT. Smart, informative, and with a sense of humor!! I've always been interested in physics and quantum mechanics, but my math skills SUCK. If I had a teacher that could have made it this interesting I might have become an engineer!!! GREAT guest!!!
You seldom see this combination in a person but it definitely makes sense. To analyze superheroes movies as how they relate to realistic science I think would end up a pyrrhic victory but I feel he directed his focus to the wins even when they proved totally fictional giving rooms for lots of "COULD" and "IMPROBABILITY".
Overall, I like his enthusiasms and truthfulness, the glow in his eyes are something to take away. And how he analyses concept that you wouldn't even pay attention to like Loki's attempt on Thanos's life linking it back to the use of the tessaract in the first avenger is superb. It tells me, Man knows his onions.
*little did they know, drax was in every scene, standing very still*

Hulk can grab two continents and smash them together? Why not just two handfulls of rock or dirt. Superman (DC) can stop crashing planes/rockets/etc by grabbing them without just punching a hole in them?

Yeah, I have his book on science of superheroes. Beyond physics he spends a lot of time talking about the comics history. Really nice!
You're not even close to wrong. It's a little weird to explain, but there are plenty of little moments and details that he references or brings up that most experts who don't really love Marvel, or just sorta watch the odd one when it comes out, wouldn't pick up on, or forget, or whatever. It's something that irks me, as a super-attentive moviegoer, when I watch some of these 'experts break down' videos. This guy? Not even once. Every time I thought to myself, 'ugh, of course he's not gonna bring up that', he freaking next thing he said was addressing it.
He had a big smile on his face the whole time.
I love _how many references this guy is dropping._ I grinned like an idiot at 11:10 - "when Captain America throws his mighty shield."
It's a weird feeling when a physics professor tells you that sure, cybernetic helmet, no problem.
Beyond that; this video is adorable.
You can tell he's both a physics and a Marvel fan: he doesn't try to find "hey, that'll never work stuff", but to find a way to explain how something might work.
Which is exactly how invention works: looking at an impossible idea and going, "well, for that to be _possible_ , you would need ..."

It is possible but not entirely possible.. like he said, power supply. Arc reactor = Three power plant. Not to mention it is human size.. I think it is easier to create a Pacific Rim Jaeger (or a big robot.) than an Ironman suit hahahaha.
Amazing video and this was so interesting to watch and enjoy today :]
Thanks for all the in-depth ℹ️nfomation mate! 👏🏾👍🏾 I’ll take Ghost powers but wish they would’ve cleaned up the explanation of her powers
I never had so much fun listening to someone talk about physics
Your profile picture matches your comment.
you've had bad physics teachers then😶
Physics is fun if you understand it. U cant blame anything for the lack of knowledge u have for it
@@rollxrsmash3591 any subject can be fun if the teacher makes it fun.
And you can blame the lack of knowledge for boredom.
Thats cause all he did was talk about it, if he started bringing in the math, equations, and assumptions that physicists often require, it would probably be several lectures long
i love his facial expressions when he starts talking about iron man
Can't blame him, Iron Man 1 slaps so hard.
I love iron man 1 3000
It matches with mine when I talk about any iron man movie
I'm glad you got a Marvel fan for this who takes into account things like Thor being a god, Vibranium, Pym Particles, and other unreal things to mix with real world physics. I wish he would have talked more about Ant-Man and generating mass. The movie explains it very differently from how it works. Maybe Hank Pym specifically told Scott it worked that way to make sure he couldn't try to sell his ideas or anything.
I... would never have guessed the Spiderman train-stopping scene was plausible.
Spiders are freaking badass.
I love how much this man loves comics. It hurts my heart when experts sneer at fiction or are overly cynical (we get it, we know it's fantasy too). But the fact he's a renowned physicist and a huge nerdy fan is Grade A in my book!
Yup, he's pure awesomeness personified! I wouldn't bunk so many physics classes in college if he was my professor, that's for sure! I'm pretty sure he makes physics lectures pretty entertaining...
I’ve actually taken his class many many years ago! He’s a delight!
I wouldn't consider marvel movies nerdy as they are very mainstream.
@@TheAgentOfDeath He mentioned he read comics as a kid though. That was considered nerdy then and probably is now.
@@TheAgentOfDeath Marvel is mainstream NOW, when this guy was reading comics, it was still, "shove into lockers" material. Also they're still nerdy, it's just that being a nerd is mainstream now. Regular people finally figuring out something is cool doesn't make it less nerdy.
So according to him, the MCU is more realistic than I imagined it to be. This is kind of a first.
yeah he must be a real fan because he was really generous, like in ant man, the fact that it shrinks without altering the mass or that he ahrinks below an atom's sizedeserves a 1, and the 3 nuclear power plants are no better than a 3, being realistic, only spiderman and the last one go avobe 5
but hey, im biased because ive never seen any of these movies, the plot may be fantastic, but not the physics
Alejandro Zarzuelo i mean it is from comics tho and the original source material is really unrealistic but they try to add explainations for the movies so i do appreciate them doing that
He only analyzed a few things. He gave most of them low scores. And overall, he was extremely generous.
Lol , no its not
@@Azknowledgethirsty how'd u come here?
My #1 most absolute favorite video ever. As a comic nerd, this was the best
Great job Doc! Appreciate your passion and profession!
Mad respect for you putting my boy Tobey Maguire saving the train.
He sure has grown
How much would the fans squee if there was a live action spider-verse film and Tobey's Spiderman shows up.
Iron Man got 9/10?
_Quick, let's make Iron Man real just in case robots revolted againts us_
Zuzu *brings cheeseburgers* LETS GET IT!!!!!!!
It would be a dream to see Robert Downey Jr. In his mark 50 suit in real life ♥♥♥
Look up Hacksmiths, he made a complete Iron Man helmet
Yeah, have you seen there are actual guys building his suit and helmet. His movement when he first created the iron man suit and was trying to pilot it are also very accurate in that regard.
you should look up Richard Browning who built a jet suit.
this is honestly just the perfect video -- all ive ever wanted
i love marvel and science and every time i see them overlap in the movies or comics i cant help but want to know more -- and this told me more !! :D
i really wanna check that book out too
not to mention the physicist being really interesting and captivating , as well as being able to turn massively complicated science into easily digested explanations !!
Thank you for this vid! I love your book!
