I love this song. It's like a villainous theme for a whole country. The aspects you hear from sincerely patriotic songs mixed with those dark synths really make it come together.
Its fascinating seeing the frequently played points of this video because it drops off just before the singing but picks up around the part with the fake smile
Or the soundtrack of social reality as I walk down the street in nyc; which looks like Dubai's sick cousin. Still building so so many ugly super talls everywhere in Midtown down to the Battery. discovered killing joke only this year. before knowing them I thought they're just some goth rock stuff. But listening to them I am guessing they influenced many artists. They have this intensity and theatrics that exist in my favorite heavy and extreme music. They approach their music as a religious ceremony or gospel - very emotional and powerful !
I remember back then when this came out everybody thought they'd sold out and gone mainstream. Now it's almost forty years later and they're still going on strong, more uncompromising than ever!

Paul Raven demanded his name be removed from the album, as he didn't contribute to it, and he and the drummer quit. The drummer and bass player here are session guys.

The keyboards, (while not intended at the time I'm guessing) are now a perfect example of over the top too cheese 80's keys and it fits the lyrics perfectly, as if it was intended as parody. It's aged into a much better piece of commentary on the era impossible to imagine at that time. Glorious.
Not intended as parody at all, unfortunately. I'm sure Jaz would deny this now, but the band had unexpected chart success with their fifth album, and the next two both suffer from obnoxiously "poppy" production in a transparent (failed) attempt to get radio play. The social commentary has only aged well, like you say...

I am familiar with their entire recorded output, and there are parts of it (especially the sixth and seventh studio albums) which I really can't listen to. That is mainly because of the production, but that in turn is because the band was trying at that point to replicate their earlier chart success. Once they gave up on this - which took a while - and went back to pleasing themselves, the problem went away

I was never into watching music videos and, therefore, I didn't know KJ has so many music videos. This is one of better ones, great visual story told through naivety and symbols. Love it.
jesus the debate of this not being real KJ is very wrong, this album keeps further the kind of production started on the 2 before, just more deep into complex chords and more melody and arrangment, and yet still is a kick ass records, very dark and ominous , no matters under what name came out.

It's not about whether you like it or not, the bass player and drummer left the band embarrassed by the album. The progressive chord structures was much better on the following album "Extremeties...". But this album, its just synths and half realised sketches of songs, 'America' being the most commercial sounding hence this video. It does not follow on thematically from the two previous records at all. If you like it, fine, but please don't try and say this is a Killing Joke Album, or that to point out that it's not a Killing Joke Album is somehow wrong.
This song was released more than three decades ago but it’s arguably even more relevant now than it was back then! My favorite part of the music video was the quarter moon lol!
I think it's a great name. And I think they're a really one-of-a-kind band and very influential to the post-punk era and beyond. And this video is outstanding. I hope it got plenty of airplay.

Decades ago I bought a KJ t-shirt with the America single print on. Decades on, I still have it, almost in shambles, but it's one of my most loved belongings.
I know this album was supposed to be asolo effort from Jaz Coleman, but for some reason the record company released it as a Killing Joke album(hense the different bass player and drummer in this video). Geordi is on the entire album on guitar. While its really NOT a true KJ album in the sense that is was meant to be,IMHO,it is ne of their BEST ALBUMS AND its a shame they never toured from it or really played any songs from it live. Love the album and this song. The Calling, America, and Outside the Gate are my personal favorites for this album,including others
It's best to think of this as a Jaz Coleman solo effort, not Killing Joke. Either way, I don't care how many people hate on Outside The Gate, I like it and I f'in love this song!

I liken Outside the Gate to Angel Dust by Faith No More. Both albums were very bold, very intentional, and not for the masses.

I know this album was supposed to be asolo effort from Jaz Coleman, but for some reason the record company released it as a Killing Joke album(hense the different bass player and drummer in this video). Geordi is on the entire album on guitar. While its really NOT a true KJ album in the sense that is was meant to be,IMHO,it is ne of their BEST ALBUMS AND its a shame they never toured from it or really played any songs from it live. Love the album and this song. The Calling, America, and Outside the Gate are my personal favorites for this album,including others

It's best to think of this as a Jaz Coleman solo effort, not Killing Joke. Either way, I don't care how many people hate on Outside The Gate, I like it and I f'in love this song!
