I bought this car but in the Alltrack version after watching the older review you did Thomas. Really pleased with it and love the design and technology inside.
Thanks Thomas for the fantastic review. I really enjoy your in depth analysis of each car.The Passat in the test is a fast car, you did approx. 6 to 7sec from 0-100km/h and 29sec from 100 to 200km/h using the timed sessions of the video as a reference.

If you want to give this car a realistic suspension test, bring it to Bucharest and test it in all the 3D holes created allover the road. I'm currently driving my VW golf 7 in Romania and I admire the fact that drives very smooth and it didn't remain "naked" by now, meaning only the car chassis and the stearing wheel. Very good construction, well done VW.
I have to say, as an Englishman, your reviews are my very favourite! The speech is so relaxed and calm as to be almost soporific and the depth of the reviews is outstanding. Thank-you very very much.
Great Review Thomas as usual. I got this in a 2.0 L petrol a year ago when my baby arrived. I was hesitant trading in my 1yo BMW318i m-sport. I have a Labrador too and i really needed the space. I must say The space is more than anyone could ask for from a 4 seater. The interior quality level didn't leave me missing my BMW at all. Drive comfort is excellent and the massage seats are a real treat. Performance really blows me away. For a huge vehicle it really flys and feels like a sports car. The only gripe i have is the touch screen infotainment can be a tad distracting to use when driving.
@@dragospahontu yes it is. Very planted but you have to switch to sport suspension and steering. In comfort mode it bounces around a little. Do note its long. So you need to account for that around the bends.
I have one R-line 190HP (now with 225HP) using for many years, Zero Problems (maybe lucky) and I make more than 10.000kms per year. super comfortable, good quality materials, reliable engine, good comsuptions and good trunk. in my opinion Price VS qualiy hard to beat. Superb a bit more space but not same quality, audi4 can be better but also more expensive.
Thanks for all the great reviews. I've decided on a new passat variant tsi 150 with manual transmission as I'm not a huge fan of DSG, but would love to have an automatic gearbox. Anyhow, the trusty BMW F20 116i finally had to give way for a family wagon. The passat is on offer right now where I live and it comes with the digital gauge cluster and the 2018 updated infotainment system. It's makes the interior feel very new and fresh.
Dear VW, please allow your North American customers to be able to buy a real Passat again. We don't need a VW "Toyota Camry" Passat. We want the same one sold in Europe. Just make a regular and long wheelbase version then make the same car in all markets. VW you are already saving money by making your cars in other markets with less labour costs, you don't also need to make them cheaper as well. All cars sold in North America should be up to VW European standards. Also, bring back the wagon and 4Motion. Danke.
Before 2011 VW sold the German made Passat (Dasher) in North America since 1973! They were able to sell it at reasonable prices and make a profit. So what has changed? In 2010 the average German auto worker made $67.17 per hour. The average in the USA was only $33.77. Half as much. So why can't VW make the same Passat in the USA as it does in Germany and still make a profit and sell it at a reasonable price? The only variable that has changed is VW's corporate culture that now values share holder profits above that of its customers. 2014 was VW's best year ever for profits. Just two years ago VW sold their German made Golf and GTI in North America. VW made a profit. Now they are made in Mexico where the average auto worker makes just $8 an hour. Did VW past the cost savings to the consumer? No. VW saves on labor costs, transportation costs, currency exchange rates, and parts supplier costs. More parts are sourced now from Mexico than made in Germany as well. Bottom line, VW can build the same German versions of their cars in the USA and Mexico and still make a profit.
Yippie Mexicans will fly to sky if they have 8$ per hour !! same thing is with 67$ of Germany worker and almost same with american 33$!! it is probably Brutto +all other taxes and probably it is hour of some high ranking engineer !! Mexicans got maybe 1,5-2$ netto per hour and in germany it is about 15$ and america 20+$ netto
Yippie oh lord. You don't know too much about business. They make the us spec version to fit more to the us market. This is what Americans buy more likely, so go and complain to them. The original German Passat would cost more, so much less people would buy it. Also it would be a competitor to Audi. So get over it, or buy a Audi! Easy
Regarding acceleration: in all the everyday driving the strong TDI (190-240 PS) engine feels much more alert than TSI engine (220 PS). You need to rev the gasoline engine loads to get the same power output. The diesel engine gives a much more relaxed and powerful rampage. Highline is the most common choice in Sweden, but the equipment line is called the GT here. DCC is standard for TSI 220 and TDI 240. Electrical tailgate is included in the price with the premium bundle for below 1500 EUR. TDI 240 comes packaged as GTS. For below 37 000 EUR. The Passat is the Autobahn king! Mfg Marcus, Schweden

Great review Thomas as always ! It is very beautiful and powerful car, but really expensive. Because I've got an Octavia, my favourite car right now, for the high seating position, the massive space inside it and 4x4 driving modes, is the new Skoda Kodiaq.
I've seen a few your new reviews when you're filming in the evening. That's why I wanted to say that quality of picture was better in the day time. Enjoying your videos. Good luck :)
Great test, as usual! One recommendation though - would it be possible to always include the engine type in the title of the video? Makes the search easier... Thanks!
Your reviews are far superior to the advertisements from the auto makers themselves! They should each supply you with a LOGO shirt or jacket VW , Audi, Mercedes, Audi, etc-- - would be a plus for them too!
Hi Thomas! Great review as always. Keep up the great work! Is this Passat a dsg 6 or 7? I'm thinking of purchasing, but they offer a 6 speed dsg, so just wondering....
thanks! Not sure if they changed that meanwhile, there are also different 7-spd-dsgs available, they sometimes change that from model year to model year
I don't understand the attractiveness of leather seats. Sticky when hot... I have the alcantara seats but I had to buy a chinese cover for the arm rest because it was too sticky in the summer. Can someone pls explain why you would want to have this full leather interior? Thank you!
Exactly my thoughts. I've got both an Audi A8 and Passat B8; the Audi has leather seats and the Passat has the ergocomfort cloth seats. The seats in the Passat are much better; more comfortable, grippier, don't get hot in summer and cold in winter, etc. Obviously cheap cloth doesn't feel nice but high quality cloth or velour is much nicer than leather.
The fact that I watch your reviews on cars I'm not interested in whatsoever says a lot about the quality of your reviews! Keep up the good work, and yes, keep saying "animal skin" in order for the inception to work in people's minds and they stop using leather in car interiors. :)
+Robert Cook you're such a badass! Wow! Cool! (I imagine that's the kind of comments you deeply want to hear) Hey, dumbass, if you didn't give a fuck you'd never had responded in the first place on a comment that wasn't directed to you. It's funny that you try to find every way you can to feel important... How sad is your life?
Very Sharp looking car l quite like it,better looking than the Audi A4 Avant, again nice to see you showing the cars light designs in the fading light, the best just keeps on getting better.....
You are really covering every type of combination Thomas. Something for everyone. Great review. I'm not a big fan of sporty estates. They are good family cars. Kids, trips, shopping... But sporty... No... Just 2 concepts that don't go one with another. If I want a sporty car... kids when they grow up will need to take a bus. No compromises. ;)
I was driving the passat r line in Australia a few months ago whilst waiting for my Golf R to arrive. One major set back that i faced was that the front wheels would spin when you take off from being stationary (Dash bouncing is what we call it). Will the 4 motion bi turbo be available here or is it just the single turbo front wheel drive going to be made available?
Ok new question. I have two cars lined up and want to know which is the better buy at €26k euros. I can either get a late 2014 Audi A6 Avant Allroad 3.0tdi 204hp or 2015 VW Passat Variant 2.0bitdi 4motion highline which is slightly more equipped. Both have around 60k kms.
Both for sure very nice. The passat is smaller if u have parking problems in cities. If u have space and long long rides the a6 will offer some more comfort
Here in New Zealand we have similar policing policies where there's a quota system and I agree it's a poor way for the authorities to operate. The Passat R-Line is handsome car particularly in the wagon, I prefer the high output Petrol motor as I've never been a diesel fan and the extra price (in a lot of cases in NZ) the diesel motors negates the extra fuel economy. I like this car quite a lot but I'm not sure as I get older and my joints begin protesting more and more wether I wouldn't go for the high output petrol (162kw) Tiguan but which ever I was to decide on I can't see myself being disappointed
Shame the American Passat falls short of the European one. Sadly, we do not see diesels from VW over here anymore. Do you guys typically test decibels? Also, does the gear lever block the climate unit, in your opinion? Seeing the 100% digital instrument cluster and the HVAC vent design reminds me of Audi's newest interior design language. But, unlike Audi, there are some shortcomings. The rear entertainment mounts without the system itself looks terrible, and the sides of the cargo area is plastic or some compressed fiber and not carpet.
hey thomas just one question, i came from audi a4 and now i'm interested on this passat, do you think that they are at the same level concernig about driving experience and security?
Hello Thomas, can you tell us about VW's new 1,5 TSI and 1,5 TDI engines? I've read this engines will be available next year starting with face lifted Golf and Tiguan. Is that true? How about Passat? What time do you think B8 Passat will get this new engines? I own a B7 Passat 1.4 TSI DSG and want to buy new one soon. So your answer matters. Great videos by the way. I am watching almost all your videos. I have a critic though, your average video comes around 45 minutes which I think it is too long. Sometimes I cannot view the whole video if I'm not interested that particular car. From my point of view it could be superb if you cut them around 30 minutes. Thank you.
Volkswagen has two separate production plants in China, One in Changchun and the other in Shanghai, Changchun plant produces a car called Magotan, which is a sedan, equivalent to the Passat in Europe, Shanghai is still producing a line of passat itself, although the car is very different from their German counterparts, therefore most of the Volkswagen running on Chinese streets are indigenously made! Although Volkswagen do sale their so called imported cars separately however at a much dearer price, normally a Chinese made magotan would cost around 250,000yuan which is around 30,000 Euro, but the imported version with similar specification would cost 30% more!
One thing annoying about VW in UK is that they seem to be forcing you to have Triptronic/DSG for the engines above 200hp (with exception to the Golf R). I prefer manual
How does this compare to say an Audi A4 Avant Quattro in 40 TDI trim (e.g. 190 HP diesel)? I ask because I compared the facelift Passat Variant B8 Bi-Turbo (Volkswagen UK configuator) and the A4 Avant B9 (Audi Ireland spec) and the price premium on the Audi is huge (56,000 GBP vs 80,000 Euro). Any other thoughts or opinions on this subject? P.S. Oh and before someone mentions Skoda - unfortunately Skoda is not currently available in the Philippines atm.
Thomas - a question raised by watching this review as I consider my next car. Have you any thoughts about the future value of diesel cars, based on the fact that the UK at least and, presumably, other European countries, are seriously considering a so-called 'toxin tax' on diesels, that could really make diesels hard to sell in two/three years' time? I realise you are writing from a German perspective of course. Thanks
Yet another car that we Yanks cannot have. It is so frustrating. And my dream Daddy Rocket Sled, which we can get here in the states, MB E63 4Matic Wagon. Veilen dank!
@autogefuhl - how does this engine feel in the Passat vs. the same engine in the Tiguan GTS? I prefer the seats in the Passat and I would think that the Passat is more silence inside on the motorway
Thank you. In some pictures tungsten appears to be little bit darker, reflex on the other hand is lighter. At start I thought this car was also reflex, but ok. Tungsten is a way to go then..:) Looks stunning..! Anyway, planning to buy b8 r-line. Just worrying little bit about the seat covering, is the full leather (r-line ) a way to go, or should I prefare higline seats instead (alcantara/vienna).
Thank you for a really good review ! I was wondering if you can do a review of the biggest petrol engine in the passat the GTR 280 hp? Cant find it anywhere on youtube so I will appreciate it very much. Greetings from Sweden!
I have the option of trading in my 2016 honda CRV 1.6 i-dtec ex for the 2015 model of this car but with analogue dials but fully loaded. The cost is €25000 with 58000 Kms. Would this be a good trade up?
Thanks for that, I meant more in terms of driving, comfort etc. You have tested both vehicles, so how would you compare them? I like 4 wheel drive but 90% of the time the additional ground clearance isn't necessary. I only do the occasional gravel road which I think the Passat could tackle, but your opinion would be of value. Thanks. Also given the choice between the 190ps or the biturbo 240ps is the difference for every day driving noticeable?
The passat is way superior in every sense, the only drawback could be that people say that Hondas are more reliable. Dont have any figures on that though. Driving, comfort etc the passat is superb. 190 hp is enough.
Anonymity is exclusivity and rare, who wouldn’t want that? Most people would prefer a car rarely seen on the road, it turns more heads. And supposedly the Arteon is the modern CC, there won’t be another CC for say, just this Arteon.

What is the real fuel consumption in the city ?
7 years after this video, I got a Passat b8 r-line and this review has stood the rest of time really well. Very well done, Thomas!
cheers m8 and enjoy :)
Just got the 2023 R Line very nice spacious car
looks agressive yet beautiful for a family car
As a dad and 6'4 its just good to have your driving position without knees in the back of your chair.
I'm not a family father, just really love wagons, beautiful car
I bought this car but in the Alltrack version after watching the older review you did Thomas. Really pleased with it and love the design and technology inside.
nice!
Between which cars did you choose?
Well done! The 0-100 time was 6.07 seconds and the 100-200 time was 28.89 seconds. Thanks for the excellent review!
thanks man, join more of our reviews !

Thanks Thomas for the fantastic review. I really enjoy your in depth analysis of each car.The Passat in the test is a fast car, you did approx. 6 to 7sec from 0-100km/h and 29sec from 100 to 200km/h using the timed sessions of the video as a reference.
nice!
my dad has this car, it's so comfortable and quick enough too.
i really appreciate your commitment to super-longform car reviews, really getting into everything that a car has to offer, it especially helps me because i'm thinking of purchasing a 206tsi passat of this generation (albeit a sedan), so it's very useful to get a full tour of the 'demonstator' example before inspecting the 'actual' one.
again thankyou
Highly appreciated! Please share 😎

With this engine the Passat is very sovereign!! The R-Line interior and exterior looks very impressive and sporty!!
Looks so gorgeous. Love it. Great video as always!
thanks oliver!
This car is already more amazing than anything sold in America and it's just a freaking European Passat!
I love it! I never knew how beautiful and what great performance VW cars are until I bought my 2013 Passat S wit the Appearance package. :)
The only gripe i have is the touch screen infotainment can be a tad distracting to use when driving.
Enjoy! ☺️
Is the car stable at higher speed?
@@dragospahontu yes it is. Very planted but you have to switch to sport suspension and steering. In comfort mode it bounces around a little.
Do note its long. So you need to account for that around the bends.
Hab mir gestern Variant, 150ps gekauft. Einfach ein Traum. Bester Passat aller zeiten
Viel Spaß damit !

Hi Thomas, excellent review, thanks again for that.
Question for you, what's your daily driven car :),
Dear VW, please allow your North American customers to be able to buy a real Passat again. We don't need a VW "Toyota Camry" Passat. We want the same one sold in Europe. in USA they will sold badly this version because price will be (much) higher then american (cheap) version

Took your advice between a4 and passat bought passat highline, great advice also great car 🚗

The best and most premium car in this segment! for sure!
meanwhile you can say it is.
+Autogefühl yeah, it absolutly is!
Audi A6 Avant, BMW 5 Series Touring, and Mercedes E-Class T-Mod, are the most premium cars in the segment. But for the premium price.
Skoda Superb is better: Cheaper options, more engine choice, more exciting exterior, more exciting interior and most important of all: way less common

Don't know if they will release the diesel r line, but I think the petrol variant is just being released now and I'm pretty sure it's awd.
I wish you measured the boot space back in 2016 already like you do in your newer reviews.
Thank you..The Passat it is then. I have placed my order and look forward to my car.😁
I must say, great Review!!!
keep supporting us!
Very good review. Keep up the good work.
we appreciate that
Fantastic review! Bye the way, what is your opinion comparing the engines of Golf 7 R and TDI (240 PS) ?
+Igor Begovič thx! This one rund very calm!
The rear entertainment mounts without the system itself looks terrible, and the sides of the cargo area is plastic or some compressed fiber and not carpet.
hey thomas just one question, i came from audi a4 and now i'm interested on this passat, do you think that they are at the same level concernig about driving experience and security?
yes
danke und alles gute :)
I am looking to upgrade from a Ford Focus MK2 (Diesel + Powershift). This Biturbo Passat Variant is a very strong candidate.
is there difference in quiality of the materias used in this vehicle compared to an Audi A3?
I'm a little confused about the Passat, is it the same size as the Octavia, or more like between the Octavia and Superb?
Between
Is it a poweful engine?wat was your feeling wheen you were driving it?
yeah it sure is. Did you check my remarks while driving? Going in detail
Great review, looking forward to buy used one :)
Thank you.
thanks! I ll take a look at it with the Golf Facelift. If you want less video time, try putting the video speed to 1.25
Would love to have this in Canada, thanks for the review!
thanks lucas !
Passat B8 with the Mazda 2.5l petrol engine would make a great combo.
+Ričardas Marozas indeed
Thomas, I'm at a wedding right now, but can't wait to get home to watch this! :-D Bis später!
+vlad612 🎂
lmao nice wedding
Its my car! In China it is called Variant! and only available in petrol! Mine is a 2.0 TSI premium which is the second in line! Its a good car!
nice!
Finally they got the design right, earlier versions were super ugly. Now they have to make it also reliable.
One thing annoying about VW in UK is that they seem to be forcing you to have Triptronic/DSG for the engines above 200hp (with exception to the Golf R). I prefer manual
pow1983 it’s 2019 buddy... manuals are gone man. Unless you go and build a time machine.

This engine burns oil
like the short hair Thomas! Great Review again!
thx buddy :)
Is this colour Reflex silver Metallic or Pyrit Silver Metallic? Thank you for a quick response...
afaik Tungsten?
The same q
Im going to a 2016/17 passat sc executive with the 190hp engine😍😍😍😍
PLEASE bring this to the US! Much better than Golf Alltrack,
+autogefühl Superb sportline or Passat r line? I think many features are quite similar, maybe you get more as standard on the Superb?
the Superb is a little cheaper on list price yes. But it depends on the very offer you get at your dealer!
Is it possible to buy the European version of the Passat and have it ship to the US?
Thomas - a question raised by watching this review as I consider my next car. Have you any thoughts about the future value of diesel cars, based on the fact that the UK at least and, presumably, other European countries, are seriously considering a so-called 'toxin tax' on diesels, that could really make diesels hard to sell in two/three years' time? I realise you are writing from a German perspective of course. Thanks
yes, air is getting thin for Diesels indeed. I wouldnt invest in them on the long-term run
love this beauty ...Nice video .
Passat has better wind coefficient, thats the difference
Could you please consider doing a review on the new updated Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Hi what is the name of colour of passat you have tested?
Tungsten Silver
Haha! Is your cat named "schmoozie"? :P Great car and a great review aswell! :)
Schmusi would be the German spelling :)
See more of her here: ruclips.net/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/видео.html
Haha! :D Thanks Thomas! And of course NO to cat skin on car seats :)
thanks buddy :)
Again Thomas, I agree with you!
Animal skin is not good. They should give more alcantara & faux leather options
+Mspired 👍👍
Couldn't help but laughing about that speed control. We get the same nonsense also in Spain. Great car and better review.
=)
What is the color of this passat..?
Is it reflex silver or tungesten silver..`?
Tungsten!
I think in our big comparison test we had 1.8 l 180 hp and the 220 hp in the Superb, that will already help: ruclips.net/video/YLplgsCxY-Q/видео.html
nice review and nice car as well :)
Great review
thanks keep tuning in!
I have the option of trading in my 2016 honda CRV 1.6 i-dtec ex for the 2015 model of this car but with analogue dials but fully loaded. The cost is €25000 with 58000 Kms. Would this be a good trade up?
Passat is always a good choice. Just if u want to stay with suv, u should consider tiguan
Thanks.....I didn't need convincing really 😂 happy that you have consolidated my choice.
A great car but too anonymous on the road. Im looking forward to the new "CC", hopefully it will have a better front.
Anonymity is exclusivity and rare, who wouldn’t want that? Most people would prefer a car rarely seen on the road, it turns more heads. And supposedly the Arteon is the modern CC, there won’t be another CC for say, just this Arteon.
Can VW sell this in Canada with VR6 and manual trans?
