    The Bass taste secret:
    some shallow/weedy/warm water bass can be stout. Deep/cold water bass are as good as walleye. The trick is this: for all white flesh fish, dissolve 2 heaping tablespoons of salt, and one of baking soda, in a gallon of cold water. Rinse the fillets well in cold water, then leave them in this solution for 24-48 hours. Tbey will be firm, mild, and delicious.
    This will work in any white fleshed fish, but not on trout or salmon, which will just get mushy...er.

    Acctually people better start eating bass once in a while and here is my theory,bass need food and if there is too many bass there is less food for all of them,so if we keep control of how many bass are in certain areas the ones left have more food and grow bigger, don't burn me for this comment is just a theory but just think of it

    • @samsadowitz1724
      @samsadowitz1724 6 лет назад +7

      There is merit to your theory..... its the basis of how states determine regulations and in some bodies of water, they want you to keep bass through plr slots (slots where if you catch one in the range, you release it and only keep one over the range).
      I recall seeing it in the Tennessee regulations a few years back.

    • @CesarMorales-uz9vy
      @CesarMorales-uz9vy 6 лет назад +6

      Victor Franqui pond management , my friends do that here the ones who have land and private ponds/tanks .they say a good way to tell on when to do this is if you keep catching fish but they’re all the same size it means there growth stunted because of not enough food and it’s good to cull a few they still don’t eat the bass though they eat the catfish and crappie and you start to catch some huge bass... but I do mean small private ponds don’t go taking small fish out of public fisheries now !

    • @samsadowitz1724
      @samsadowitz1724 6 лет назад +2

      some public fisheries actually want that, but that will be detailed in the state regulations for certain bodies of water.

    My kids (now in their 20's) and I fish a 40 acre lake (30 ft. deep) in northern WI with lg. and small mouth bass. No motors in the lake and you can see 15 ft. down. The lake is land locked and I have not bought a license in about 20 years. It is a spring fed lake and very clean. We can usually catch 7 or 8 keeper fish in an hour. I use the same recipe and the fish taste awesome. The lake used to have big gills, sun fish and the occasional crappie. Now we only see bass and they seem to be smaller than back in the 80's. The lake needs to be fished more to allow the bass to grow. Back in the early 60's, walleye were introduced but they slowly went away. I think most people that wouldn't consider eating bass have only tasted bass from an over boated, oily water lake contaminated by pollution. Clean bass cooked properly are very good!

  • @triela420

    Most people that have ponds with bass eat the small ones to keep them from overpopulating the pond. They taste excellent. Once they get big (4-5 lbs) they don't taste as good, and you wanna keep them in your pond for fun anyways.

    Largemouth imho is a decent fish for the table as long as it is close to the limit size. As they get larger/older just let them go for the next angler to catch. Apex predators in many American lakes build up toxins as they age. I think spots actually taste better, maybe because they are usually legal to harvest at a smaller size. Love the video man!

    Soak the fillet in milk overnight. Then prepare it. The milk takes out the “bass-ness”.

    I have no issue eating bass and I think this is a great video. I can understand why some people get so butthurt but at the same time I don’t. Largemouth is like any other native fish and they actually taste really good, now anything over a certain size I’m gunna throw back just because it’s also a sport to me. I’m not saying everytime I bass fish ima keep one ide say a couple times a year I’d cook one up but definitely the bigger bass I toss back

    I’ve eaten bass. Lower Columbia river downstream of Hanford. So, I glow now. 🤢 But the fish wasn’t that bad. Oh, it stunk! But what fish doesn’t, coming out of the Columbia? The thought of eating Carp is a stretch, but I’d do it in a pinch. Squaw fish-NOPE.
    I remember when I cooked the bass the heart was still beating outside the fish; and I diced it up, and each piece was beating in unison. That’s how heart meat works. It’s on a primordial clock. The nerves still function on a basal level not attached to the central system. Because God.

    I've kept small bass to eat in the past. In some instances it's good to weed out the small ones and lessen the competition for food. It's basic management.

  • @ctoddniu

    The lake I fish most has an overpopulation of small bass, so we've been taking out a lot over the past few years. We don't keep anything over 15", but the small ones taste pretty good. We also eat a lot of crappie, and they taste very similar.

    Hey, don’t be afraid to keep fish. The ones that fish and don’t eat it are the weird ones 😂 it was initially for meat to survive + it’s just all around fun to do and that’s the part that became a sport but you can still eat

    Limit here is 15 inches and we have a possession limit of 5 per day. You bet your ass I limit out as often as I can. They aren’t endangered nowhere near threatened and they are GOOD! I fish for food just as much as I do for fun. Some of us try to buy as little as possible from the stores and truly provide for ourselves.

    I think the best way to eat bass if you find yourself in a situation like that is in the form of nuggets actually. They have an excellent consistency for it as well as providing thick fillets. If they're fried and seasoned well, just squeeze a little bit of lemon over it and some greens and they're great to eat.

    Yesterday a 21" (I measured it) large mouth bass beached itself right next to my campsite. Its stomach was bulging because it had eaten something too big. I waited to see if it would recover. If not, the plan: cook it up.
    I went to do something for about ten minutes. When I returned to the fish it was gone.
    There were coyote tracks in the wet sand, right to where the fish had been.

    Enjoy your Catch and Cook videos. While fishing for trout in one of our local lakes, I caught a rather big Largemouth bass, somewhere between 2 - 3 pounds. Took it home and fixed for dinner that night. Instead of fileting it as you did, I made one slit across the throat, cleaned it out real good. Next put it in the refrigerator while I prepared the Wild rice stuffing. Leaving the head on, so the stuffing would not spill out, I placed it on some foil, put some butter with it, then sealed the foil shut. Cooked it for about five minutes at 350 degrees, opening it once to baste the fish with its juices. at this point I added a couple of tablespoons of lemon juice, then let it finish cooking. When finished I took it to the table and unwrapped it peeling off one side and spooning the wild rice out I shared this with my mother who I happened to be caring for at the time. It was one delicious dish. Have done the same treatment with some large trout I had caught. Just cannot beat fresh caught fish for a meal. Have several ways that I prepare my fresh fish. Cannot wait until you do the pickerel catch and cook.
