Catch Clean and Cook Bass.

- These fish have always been great table fare, but have lost favor as the "Catch and Release" campaign has been very popular. Across the county, this is a very sustainable fishery and taking a few for the table is needed to maintain healthy populations. This is a great largemouth bass (non-fried) recipe cooked on cast iron and coals. Bass and Grits. Catch clean and cook.

Everyone wants to know why we kept the larger fish. Well, it got hooked in that bad spot behind the tongue and bled out. I rather eat him than leave it out there for the gators. Backwoods Gourmet Channel ok good I would have been mad I hunt but I just hate killing bass
Don't be mad either way. These fish are not threatened or rare around here. Just a good one.
It’s not good to keep big ones because people fish tournaments and need those big bass
You don't have to explain yourself to anyone brother. If you're within the fish and wildlife regulations then I say grill it up man. And to everyone who's hating on him let the fish and game wardens regulate the fisheries. That's what the regs are for. If they were threatened they would change the laws to protect them much like they did here in Florida with Red Snapper.
Awesome man, I have bass fries all the time
My grandfather had a filet knife similar to yours, and he loved it. It was the first knife I ever used to filet my first fish when I was about 7 or 8. Your video has brought back many memories. RIP granddad!
I don't understand why more people don't eat bass. They're a meaty fish and they cook up great.
cause they’re better to keep on catching. especially out of ponds it type retarded to take a 6lber out a pond smh leave them genes in there
Someone told me they didn't know that they could and they thought it was tough to eat once. It might just be that they think they're not good eating fish.
i think it’s because they are caught for fun in local ponds(most times) where they are put there and people have trash and the public pond/lake looks dirty at times. but if it was wild i would totally go for it
100 percent agreed with you. Bass is very nutrition brain food. Caught a 22 in her this morning
I think a lot of it is because they are believing what they're told or read that only panfish or walleye are what is good to eat. Wrong! That or they're bad cooks and don't know how to properly clean and prepare bass. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are excellent fish to eat...they taste great baked, fried, grilled etc.
I scaled and gutted a bass and grilled it over coals and it was the best tasting fish ever. I was rather drunk at the time though.
Robert Hanan.....I am toasting you and slamming a shot of whiskey! Fish on!
Did a big carp one cold nite like that. Was excellent. Had a little to drink too
@@user-hv6ov3pm3f You mean alcohol might have been involved?
I wouldn't say bass is the best. It is good, but crappie is better.
Alcohol may have been involved?
Came to see how to filet a bass and I subscribed with how impressed I was with his clean. That and when he said "before everything was made in an China".
Thanks for sharing and I'm happy I found this channel.
Love me some bass! Been eating my whole life. People say it's only a sport fish until they try it...
Yes bass are very good and healthy to eat. And need to remember that largemouth & smallmouth are in the sunfish family not even a true bass . So delicious. I always take some home to eat and put a few back works out pretty well.
I hate u
Luke lmao
@@lawrencecates8402 they're still true Bass
Not eating on you for eating Bass though go ahead and take the little ones
This made me cry. I can't believe I witnessed something so beautiful!
Respect, Sir: There were a lot of things on that plate I do not normally care for, but watching you make it, if I had ordered it in a fancy $100 a plate restaurant, I'm sure I would have eaten every morsel and licked the porcelain clean when no one was looking. You are a legend to the men of cast iron.
Thank you for the kind words.
This dish looks amazing! Ill have to try it myself thanks for the presentation!
Made a big batch tonight and it's great. My wife makes some great shrimp and grits and the recipe is practically identical. Never thought to do it with fish, but I'm glad to have another way to fix bass now.
This is a real channel..and a video that i enjoyed watching...fishing the bass how to fillet it also how to cook ..all the ingredients made it look like a million dollar plate..thanks for sharing this with us.
Thanks for the kind words.
Mr Backwoods
I've never laughed so hard as when you walked out with that shotgun.. I thought people were beating down your door to get to all that fried okra. looks great.
keep up the good work love your videos.
Matt from Tampa checking in. .
Can't be too careful these days.
I thank you very much for the recipe, it looks quite delicious!
This is so damn southern, that’s how I know it’s gonna be good.
Don’t think I’m being sarcastic. Black or white, southerners just know how to cook like nobody’s business. No white jokes about not putting seasoning when it comes to southern people.
Funny you would say that. Watching it I was thinking "I don't know where this guy is from but it is not from the South." No one would prepare the fish like that in the South. Not the woods part of the South anyway. Everything is way too "gourmet".
Shit we cook hog nuts and they taste good
Too many ingredients for my liking. I'm a dude that is so cut and dry it makes me look stupid at times. If it was a 25 oz. Open range fed Ribeye, just maybe three ingredients is all you need on the best grill/ smoker your money can buy.
That's how we came to stomach what we're offered, shit loads of seasoning xD
Hi Backwoods Gourmet: I just want to share that I really enjoy watching your video's and cooking recipes. Thank you so much for doing what you do for the enjoyment of your viewers. This dish is simple but just looked so good. It reminds me of my 103 year old grandmother (still has all her mental acuities-sharp as a tack). For 40 years she lived with my Grandpop in South Carolina and they had a huge veggie garden out back of their house on several acres of land. She used to grow okra and many other veggies and just made the most delicious homemade veggie soup I have ever tasted. Grandpop turned me on to having grits for breakfast with a little butter and honey and also as a side dish for dinner with a hint of cheese. The scallions are a terrific addition to your grits. Yummy!!!
Sounds like I would have loved to eat a meal at your grandparents house. I had similar experiences with my grandparents and am trying to keep this kind of cooking alive in a McDonald's 21st century world. I do not want the old ways and dishes to be lost in a fast food culture. Thanks for watching and your's is the best comment I have had in quite a while. Hit that subscribe button and learn more of these old time recipes. If you have one that we have not done, send it to us.
I have subscribed to your channel and "liked" the video. You are a lovely person.

Outstanding video and I will try that dish for sure, thanks.
when I was little my uncle would only fish for cat, bluegill or crappie.when a bass hit,he would say
we would get in trouble if we kept it.but now he is dead and gone ,so i guess its ok to eat em now.
he was a great uncle, miss that clown.
Walter Grant 12 inches or bigger
Don't eat Largemouth
SD ANGLER largemouth is good to eat
The Jiggin Bass Boy I say keep em as long as you aren’t on a body of water where bass are fished for sport. It’s no fun fishing in a tournament for a fish that no longer exists in that lake.
Ben Maliepaard Thats true
You have mad fileting skills. Thanks for the recipes and ideas, will definitely be trying some soon.
great recipe for a full dinner. Thx. Steve, Plymouth, MA
Love your video's thanks for sharing!
Awesome video. As a new angler, your video was super informative on how to fillet a catch and I love the cooking piece of the video. Looked like an amazing dish. Hopefully I’ll catch a decent size fish on my next camping trip with the wife. Would love to cook one up like that and impress the lady of the house. Lol.
A new angler ? Where have you been ?

I would love to hear what Gordon Ramsey says about this dish. :-D
Gordon wish he could cook like this dude
Why?
He would say it looks like barf
He would say that it took too loooooooooooog to complete that dish
He would probably like it, gordon Ramsay knows good food when he sees it, this guy isnt trying to sell this up at some restaurant he's cooking a homestyle meal
I'm a bass fisherman and enjoy deep fried bass and blackened bass grilled in a Lodge cast iron grill pan. I live in the Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lake area.

Started a binge watching session. Good work, Sub'd.
I cant say I haven't kept and eaten large mouth bass, but I prefer to catch and release 99% of the time. Crappie is my favorite freshwater fish to eat though.

This guy killed it on the presentation yum
This dish was amazing.
That looks great!
I love your recipe and all. I will check it out. Being in South Florida, and I'm Cuban...…… I'll cook the fish similar, but I'll throw in some maduros in the dish and cook some rice and black beans to replace the grits. Thank you :)
I love it when people watch my videos and come up with their own ideas on haw to make it their own. Thanks for watching.
2 tips.
1. Don't leave your shotgun by a screened in area. Perpetrators can easily get to it before you.
2. If you cut the onion instead of pulling it out with the roots, it'll grow back, giving you a lot more use.
Omg it looks so good!! I wanna eat it!!
about time somebody catchein an eatin bass, the hell with all the bass catchers who release, keep yea limit an eat well my friend
I agree. If you want to save the fish from harm, then don't catch them at all. Like releasing before you catch. DON'T BOTHER THEM AT ALL.
It’s fun to fish bass for game. Some fisherman don’t even like fish they just love the game. I know plenty of bass fisherman though that will eat bass. Me personally I won’t. But i love to eat catfish !
Travis Locklear hush child you don’t speak unless i tell you to fucking speak bitch.
zidg you’re a pylon. Shut your mouth, do nothing and do your job... bitch
Looks delicious good job man
Dam you killed it. Looks delicious
I've always catch and release but I might have to try this
I just found your channel and I'm so glad I did. I can't wait to try this recipe. As your newest subscriber, I was wondering if there's away to find a written version of this recipe.
We do not have a written recipe, but this one is pretty simple to just write down while watching the video. Thanks for watching and subbing.
I beat an egg and pour it in the okra before I add the cornmeal. it helps it stick to all the sides as well.
man you know how to cook! I liked the video. new sub here.
Great video looks great!!!!!
Woah, that’s a huge fish. Good catch
Not around here. Just a decent one.
Great idea for our hunting trip in November..
