As a gen z-er, I’ve wanted to become a psychiatrist to actually help people in my generation and not just pretend to care. I understand that when someone shows that they truely care about you and your problems, you are able to open up more and get an accurate diagnosis.

People are negative about it because they have experienced many negatives about it. We are upset because, despite how long it takes to enter their profession, and how much education they get, they still do their jobs utterly ineffectively. They label people using the same rudimentary criteria taught to people in high school, and say that people are predisposed to doing things (like they tried doing to me), even when it is a unique response to an extraordinary situation (like it was for me). They treat patients in wards like they are sub-human and have no respect for or analysis into the past circumstances and actual emotions of the patient. I voluntarily admitted myself after an extraordinary panic attack in response to a very surreal and awful situation, and I spoke with a single psychiatrist for 15 minutes once during my entire stay. My past was never discussed, and the circumstance that led to it occurring and my emotions were never discussed. They attempted to medicate me on the basis of what little information they had, cared for, or considered. Psychiatrists at inpatient units do not actually assist patients, but make them feel worse with their usually God-awful attempts at diagnoses and medication of people who don’t actually need them (some do). I know what it takes to get into the line of work, and that is exactly why I am mad at psychiatrists at these sorts of units. They have over a decade of education, medical school, and residency, and still do a considerably worse job than they should. Psychiatrists are meant to help people recover and be a person people should be able to talk to, but instead they are people who come out with the most abhorrent and out-of-this world judgements that have the potential to ruin people’s lives, with no actual assistance administered, just attempts at medication. That 3 day stay didn’t help my anxiety at all and made me feel dehumanized, disrespected, and like a prisoner. The professionals at those places never listen, and therefore come up with insulting and putrid conclusions. I instead decided on therapy, and in under 2 years, on February 10, I graduated therapy, and on August 18, my diagnosis of disordered anxiety was removed officially from my record. While many people do need psychiatric intervention and medication, psychiatrists at units get so used to people needing these things, that they very often apply unnecessary labels and don’t listen (like they don’t listen to those who need serious intervention and medication) to every patient, regardless of their circumstance. I would recommend watching this video from a person who worked as a psychiatric ward, since it neatly explains the grotesque, sometimes cruel and inhumane practices of psychiatrists in both “treating” and “diagnosing” people: ruclips.net/video/VTV-Xbn9FeE/видео.html

It's true that psychologists don't have medical degrees. However, psychologists also operate with a biopsychsocial model. We are trained in biology, neuroanatomy, and in the detection of possible physical origins of the symptoms which Patients present to us. We cannot diagnose physical dusorders, but we can and do identify possible physiological contributions to the conditions we treat. We can assess, diagnose, and treat the same disorders that psychiatrists can. In Canada, our scope of practice is much the same as that of psychiatry, with the exception of prescription privileges, which are currently available only in a few states to psychologists with extensive postdoctoral training.

If the psychiatry is not a science as you say, how come the psychiatrists have 8-9 years of medical training, in a medical school?! As far as I know they have to pass the same exams in order to be allowed to practice like any other medical student, in the specialty they choose. There is proved by MRIs that there are modifications in a brain of a schizophrenic patient. If we think about the medication used in depression, it helps to balance a chemical imbalance in the brain. There are different classes of medication with specific targets in the brain and there
are a lot of scientific studies which prove that the medication can work...and I can keep going. Yes, we find chronic patients in psychiatry, who ``don't heal``, in the meantime there are chronic patients in other ``scientific`` fields of medicine: cardiac diseases
and let's think only at the High Blood Pressure, if the cardiology's field is ``more scientific`` than the psychiatry, or diabetes in endocrinology, right? The psychiatry is even more complex as it has to treat not only the ``scientific`` part by the medication as any other field of medicine but it has to take care of the human being as a whole linked with his environment, his behavior, his wishes, his loses, , his place in the society.

Hi. I have been feeling symptoms for a couple of years Brain feel like it foggy all the time. I've been to many doctors and 3 ER visits as of late. No one can find anything wrong with me, but they all say anxiety which i think it's more than that. I get twitching right eyes and shortness of breath. I have passed out twice which prompted 3 visit. I have heart palpations. Now all of this happens for about 2 months but then it and is still ongoing
Now im worried again cause last night as i was trying to go asleep it felt like my brain shut off, kinda like i wasn't there for a second. For like 3 days now i have been feeling like a pass out feeling but havent passed out and now last night that wierd brain thing happened. I have got these feelings of passing out during the years ive been feeling symptoms and they last for about a week then i will bounce back but never had what happened last night. What could this be?? I have had my blood taken also ct scans of my brain, chest and heart scan and everything they say is normal. I dont feel normal at all now for 2 years. Ive taken so many test and seen like 4 different regular doctors but never they refered me to a neuro or psy. Now i have no insurance to go to doc and check cause the price went up. Any thought on what could be wrong with me would be doing help. I just want my young life back as im only 38 years old and was very athletic before all of this.

First of all don't ever let anyone tell you that you should stop worrying or being too dramatic. Those symptoms do have an impact on the quality of your life and you deserve better. It could also be something serious so don't just overlook it.
Second of all, from what I understood the symptoms you are experiencing are more physical than mental, you would probably need to see a neurologist instead of a psychiatrist.
I know you might not be in the perfect place to fight for your health, maybe you don't have the money etc.. but please don't quit. We all deserve a peaceful life without any pain. I really hope gou get better.

    "Major Depression Disorder"
    "Medication Resistant
    Depression"
    "Seasonal Affective Disorder"
    "Premenstrual Dysphoria Disorder"
    "Sleep Related Eating Disorder."
ALL THESE "DIAGNOSED DISORDERS" WENT AWAY WHEN I DISCONTINUED THE PHARMACEUTICALS THEY WERE GIVING ME.
    Isn't that remarkable??
I can HEAL people from their illnesses!
By removing the drugs that are causing them??
How I fell for all this nonsense and abuse is beyond me. I was dumb, naive, too trusting and medicated. Bloody incredible.

@@capresti3537 That's five separate questions each with nuanced answers, i'm not here to type a novel in the youtube comments. I will say something on your last point though, you've got to understand that we've only been practicing Psychology as a species for about 150 years now give or take. it takes time to accumulate knowledge on something as intricate as the human brain. psychology is by definition not pseudoscience because it uses the scientific method. the problem is even twins can have different brain chemistry (the way hormones and neurotransmitters react/function in the brain) this is why it's so difficult to make significant tangible progress. analyze traditional medicine just for a moment the same way you do Psychology, take chemotherapy for example, it's essentially "pump the patient full of poison and kill everything"
(hoping that the cancer dies before the patient does) it's a barbaric treatment, yet we've been practicing traditional medicine for thousands of years to get to this point.

      @capresti3537 2 года назад

@@4356-n7m I'm sorry but life's problems have nothing to do with abnormality of the human brain. This has never been scientifically proven. Psychology like psychiatry is pseudoscience and I will explain why. Psychology does not meet the five basic requirements for a field to be considered scientifically rigorous. #1 Quantifiability, #2 highly controlled experimental conditions, #3 reproducibility, #4 predictability, and #5 testability. For example happiness, how exactly should happiness be defined?. The meaning of that word differs from person to person and especially between cultures. What makes Americans happy doesn’t necessarily make Chinese people happy. How does one measure happiness? Psychologists can’t use a ruler or a microscope, so they invent an arbitrary scale. So the failure to meet the first two requirements of scientific rigor (clear terminology and quantifiability) makes it almost impossible for happiness research to meet the other three.
There also has been no evidence of abnormal brain chemistry being the cause of any persons abnormal behavior. You want to compare a disease cancer which is a real measurable disease that can be seen tested scientifically to an invented disease by psychiatrists and psychologists. This is nonsense. Chemotherapy kills cancer cells this has been proven yet it does also kill good cells but psychology/psychiatry uses drugs for invented diseases they have never proven causing the same symptoms and diseases they claim to treat. Psychology does not use the scientific method because it is not a science.

Lets take your example happiness, #1 can it be quantified? yes it's called dopamine, doesn't matter what culture your from, American or Chinese, man or woman, 5 years old or 90, dopamine is the hormone inside your brain that makes you experience the feeling "happy" #2&3 we've been able to accurately detect and measure the density of dopamine transporters for decades. #4&5 as a test i predict that if you take some cocaine you will become happy from the excess amount of dopamine that will be flooding your brain.
