Thank you for this interview. I have decided to go into psychiatry late in life...almost 40 and have been doing my research. I'm at the beginning of working on prerequisites, but the more I research, the more I love psychiatry. It's never too late. Loved this!
It’s true that it’s never too late, and often career changers or transitioners are often the most passionate and make some of the best doctors- good luck on your journey!

Psychiatry’s a great field- thanks for watching! I hope you’re well too :)
that point she highlighted "to walk the tight rope of caring too much or not caring enough" is a life lesson for every person who is passionate for psychiatry.
My passion for psychiatry has increased after learning this.

Awesome video. I am going into my third year and have been really considering psych. Thank you!!
Thank you! Psych’s an amazing specialty with a great lifestyle & pay- can’t go wrong there. Good luck with the rest of med school!
I loved her! What a lovely lady!! I'm studying psychology and this lady has majorly motivated me even though it's a different profession. I loved what she said about originally hating psychiatry and then meeting the 13 year old girl who was suicidal and wanting to make a difference. Thanks for the video :)
I agree- she’s a great doctor! I’m glad you found the video helpful and motivating. I wish we had more psychology training in med school like with CBT and specific behavior and mindset altering modalities, but that’s your area of expertise ;). Thanks for watching!

Ahhh thank you so much I am 14 and this is something I see my self doing in the future✨
Laura D’Angèle No problem, good luck on your journey!
honestly wouldnt recommend it, its not what they portray in the media and in books really. only when you have and friends or family warded with them before you will see the full extent of what they do and the dark side of psychiatry. its quite de- humanising for the patients and they do not treat the patient with any human rights whatsoever.
Laura Ovoundard ruclips.net/video/hCm7ycyYCW8/видео.html

Thank you for watching!
wow bro i just thought u was a pre-med fan boy, but turns out u a cool dude. i subbed to ur channel. best of luck!
thegrandwizard33 Lool, thanks man!
I don’t know what either of them mean by “all personality types are fit for practicing psychiatry”, but it is definitely NOT the case that just anyone should be practicing psychiatry or psychotherapy. Verbal engagement with routine and prescribed questions isn’t difficult, but the ability to perceive subtleties and nuances in brief engagements is a critical skill which some people will sadly never have.
I think she’s trying to say that many personality types can be suitable for psychiatry since each brings something to the table. The skill of emotional intelligence is something that is often selected for even at the premed level when applying to medical schools. It is also further honed throughout medical school and residency training.
Adnan A ah, gotcha.
Adnan,
I have been looking for answers to the questions presented in the video.
Personally, I am confident that the content of the video, will, for better or for worse help inform my career progressions.
Thank you so much for conducting the interview.

This was such an amazing interview. I keep dreaming about becoming a psychiatrist even though I know the path is rigorous and long.
Thank you! If it’s your passion, it’ll all pay off. Good luck on your journey.
Burn out tips is great👌🏾cut down work hours. That is very important that every person should think about when they reach that point in life where they feel overwhelmed and stressed about mundane life.
Varsha Scooby That’s true. If only we could reduce residency/med school hours too ;).
dr varsha is also on every video
Great interview. Good job.

Veronica Sanchez Aw, that’s so nice of you- thanks! God bless you too :)
Really you gave me important ideas ,thanks
Sheriff Rafet glad it helped, no problem!
Great video! Very inspiring... I have a question, though, not very related to the video theme per se: do you think being a polyglot (or knowing a language common to a certain community) is helpful in psychiatry? For example, to interview a patient whose primary language is Spanish in opposition to doing so in English.
Thank you! I’m happy you found it motivating. Knowing multiple languages, especially if they’re commonly spoken languages, is always helpful in connecting with patients and even increasing your job opportunities and income. Languages like Spanish are extra useful if your patients or your practice is in California, Texas, etc (if you’re from America). There have been many times where my patients have only spoken Spanish and knowing some Spanish came in handy.
this video helps a lot! thank you :)
I’m happy it helped! Thanks for watching!
hey adnan AMAZING vid dude asked all the questions I would ask - can you PLEASE please please do a family medicine dr next?
fotogeek96 Thank you so much! I’m interviewing one who’s chief of his department next week and I’ll have to edit the video after, so it’ll probably be up in a few weeks, but I’ll try to get it up soon.
@@DrAdnan THANK you so much! ahh you replied thats awesome! honestly i just subbed after this vid and binged almost ALL your vids your content is amazing - you really REALLY asked all the questions I had as someone who was thinking about psychiatry and like gave me a good idea of the career. I am applying for med school this cycle - I appreciate you! :)
fotogeek96 I really appreciate all your support- it means a lot! I hope you get into all your dream med schools :) Let me know if you have any questions. Good luck!
Awesome vid and I loved cuz I am a psychology student and I am aspiring to be a clinical psychologist after my bachelor
Duaa Shaykh Thank you! Clinical psychology is a great career!
Great interview. What should be the step scores appropriately to match into psychiatry residency?
Bhavya Pundir Thank you! The interquartile range that matched in 2018 was about 215-235, so some students got in with less and some with more. However, psych is getting more competitive, so I’d recommend shooting for the upper end of that range if you can.
Thank you so much !!!
No problem- thank you for watching!
Thanks for the amazing video
Austin Cooper No problem, thanks for your comment 👊
Regarding board certification: it depends on the location you want to practice. In Miami, the job scouts could only find me a job of if I was board certified. Of note: that was for urgent care, not psychiatry.
Chris P Ah, so another case of “it depends” haha. Thanks for sharing!
Adnan A yep! I have a friend who’s a psychiatrist for the VA in south Florida, and is not board certified.
Thank you for making this interview video! I learned quite more about psychiatry. It is such a delight to listen to this physician's advices. Great job. What is her name? I wanna apply to her program.
Minh Huynh Thank you for watching! Her name is Dr. Pia, but I’m not sure how much she teaches right now- perhaps some psychiatry courses for med school in 2nd year and possibly some work with residents at hospitals or clinics, but I’m not sure which ones, sorry.
Question : What were the schools she attended and the path she chose to become a psychiatrist ?
I know she briefly mentioned UC Davis.
Also Amazing interview! Thank you so much ☺️ So helpful :)
BornSociallyAwkward She went to UC Davis medical school and took a few extra years to take care of her kids. No problem, I’m happy it helped!
@@DrAdnan I love that she made time for her kids! I’m actually a UCD alumni!

I agree, 100%!
Very informative video. Thanks for the great interview 👍🏽
Asim Shareef Thank you for watching!
Really enjoyable interview Adnan. Thank you.
Her accent is British but it seems she's practicing in the US. Where did she do Residency? And any information on the possibility of a British trained Psychiatrist crossing over to work in the US?
Sunday Ocheni Thank you! I’m not sure if she grew up in Britain, but I believe she did her medical training (including residency/fellowship) in California.
I’ve heard if you want to practice as a board certified physician in the US you’d need to take the USMLE board exams (step 1, 2, etc) as well as apply for and complete residency training (and specific certification exam) here, which can be a long and difficult journey, unfortunately. However, there are a good amount of doctors from around the world that do so.
@@DrAdnan Thank you for taking the time to respond to my query. I have a friend in Psychiatry training in the UK. She's spurred my interest in the Specialty but I would prefer to live and practice medicine in the US. I do know about the USLME but I thought, rather was hoping, Fellows of the Royal College of Psychiatry had other entry routes to the US. Thanks a bunch again for the information. It's my first time on your channel, I will subscribe and follow your other videos.
Sunday Ocheni No problem! I could be wrong. Perhaps you can try emailing a medical school advisor or two and seeing what the specific requirements are and if there are other ways to go about it. I appreciate the support! Best of luck on your psychiatry journey :)
THANK YOU SOOO MUCCHHH
Malli’s World No problem, hope it helped! 😊

This was my favorite interview so far. This was awesome. You're the best Dr. Ad. Dr. P, is very cool and man...I need to go and be a psychiatrist lol. Dr. Ad, do psych so we can open up the practice out in Silicon Valley. Jk jk. But man this was great work. I think I'll marry Dr. P 👔😂😂
Joel E Glad to hear it man! Dr. P’s great, and she made me consider going into psych more, actually. Who knows, maybe that’ll be my move and then we could work together haha. Thanks! And lol, you’re a few years too late- I think she’s married 😂.
@@DrAdnan 😂...maybe she'll be your mentor in the future. And man I was hoping to propose next week. Haha. Keep it up man.
Joel E She seems like she’d be a good teacher, so I hope I rotate with her. Lol, sorry man.
At first I wanted to be a scientist from the age of 5 then a biologist as there is lots of mixing chemicals which I like then I wanted to be a geologist as I had a passion of rocks and minerals but now I think psychiatrist as I am good at chemistry and maths I enjoy those subjects a lot and helping people with mental health along as there is chemistry involved I am down! My sister who is 25 is a psychologist but she is training to be a clinical psychologist
It’s great you’ve found your calling. Psychiatry is an amazing career. Good luck on your journey! 🙌
Adnan A Thank you 🙏
No problem! Take care, friend
Nice video !
Thank you!
Adnan A. Hey could you help me a bit how much time does it take in total to become a psychiatrist? Great Video btw
Thank you! 4 yrs undergrad + 4 med school + 4 residency if you’re in the US. If you do a rare combined program or get out of hs and/or college early you can save 2 years
@@DrAdnan Thanks for the fast replies man really helped me clear out some doubts! :)
M -Kube no problem!
I would love to be a psychiatrist, but I think that the school that comes with it would be too difficult. I’m only 15 though, so I still have a lot of time to decide.
Matthew Knopf It is difficult, but if you really want it and work hard, you can do it, man. Just make sure it’s what you really want and then give it everything you got. Like you said- you got time, so you don’t have to worry now, but feel free to ask me if you have questions.
@Adnan A Psychiatry is the career that I am most interested in. I’m just not sure that I want to go to school for that long though lol. For the first four years before medical school what would you recommend majoring in? I thought that chemistry would be best, but I’m not sure.
Matthew Knopf Maybe you can try shadowing a psychiatrist, a clinical psychologist, a counselor, a psychology PhD and related fields to figure out if there’s any aspect you like in psychiatry that resonates with you the most that you can find in another field (like maybe you like counseling people the most or maybe what you like most about psychiatry is learning psychology, so you could focus on those things). I think if you’re 100% sure psychiatry is what you want to do then the sacrifice will be worth it. It’s a few years of pain for a lifetime of the career you’re passionate about. Psych has less training than many other specialties and is on the easier side to get in as well, so that might also make it easier for you.
I think a subject that you really like would be the best as long as you get your premed reqs down. This would make your college experience better and would be more unique to you/your story (which helps when applying and interviewing at med schools but also makes you more well rounded as a clinician). If you’re trying to find a major with the most crossover, I’d say something like physiology since that covers the basis of all the organ systems you need to know in med school. We don’t do much raw chem besides some biochemistry and that’s little compared to everything else you need to know.
@Adnan A Thank you! I’ll try and keep this in mind when deciding for college. I also do not want to deal with the student loans that I will have to make though. My dad is a biology professor at the college I’m going to though, so my tuition will cost less.
@@matthewbelike No problem! Student loans aren't fun. If you do decide you want to go into medicine and finances make it difficult, there are ways to finance med school in the US like working in underserved areas, Kaiser's primary care signing bonus, military scholarships, and more. Saving money in undergrad is a great idea. I wish I went to a community college instead of a bigger university for four years. Regardless of where you end up, I'm sure you'll do well. I don't think I was planning so far ahead when I was 15, props.
I am a fifteen year old girl and next year I’ll be going to high school I know am still young but I was always amazed by psychiatrist and neurology but I can’t choose! Could someone please help
There is growing overlap so it can be difficult. I’d recommend trying to shadow if you can, and research more on each of the specialties (like you’re doing now). I’ll be releasing a neurology interview in a bit! Modern day psych ends up being a lot more management of psych issues like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, etc (often with drugs) whereas neurology is more migraines, seizures, strokes, etc. I’d say whatever cases/areas of medicine you like more would be a safe bet. Also realize that since you’re so young, you don’t have to commit 100% yet. You have time to decide, so dont worry too much.
One thing I keep hearing is that psych also has a risk with receiving violence which is more than the overall average in the medical field. And that it may hence not be suitable for women. Things are specially hard in deaddiction clinics and while dealing with schizophrenia. As a woman herself I was hoping she would address those concerns too. Because honestly I've always wanted to study the human brain. So neuro/psych was always in my plan. But hearing all this has made me falter in my decisions. Are these things one should be concerned about and if so how should one deal with it?
I don’t know the stats, but you will have training on how to reduce the likelihood of violence, de escalating situations, etc, and you will have security and other assistance in environments that are risky.
I don’t think it is unsuitable for women. There are lots of great female psychiatrists who do well in all areas of psych.
I think if you’re passionate about psychiatry, don’t let any worries hold you back. There are plenty of other women who thrive in psychiatry, and there are security guards and other techniques and resources that you can use to reduce the risk of and avoid unfavorable situations like violence.
really useful
Happy it helped!
Hi Adnan, great video, thanks for posting! I was wondering if I could have Dr. P's name? Thanks!
Thank you! It’s Dr. Pia
I’m not good in math or chemistry , I’ve always been good in humanities so I am scared to fail in medical school but I do want to become a psychiatrist so I don’t know what to do.
I’m not sure where you’re at in the process, but there isn’t a lot of high level math or chemistry in med school, fortunately! If you take premed classes you can get an idea of if you can handle med school, but most of med school is physiology, with some other things thrown in (genetics, immunology, microbiology, a little stats, etc). I think a lot of premed classes, even, are way more than you need in med school in regards to those subjects (like you almost never use ochem, you barely do any chemistry, math is simple calculations, etc)
Adnan A thank you so much that really helped me a lot , I’m currently a freshman in college, I’m currently majoring is psychology and plan to do a post baccalaureate pre med program after college or do you think I should just major in biology? What path would you recommend I take? Also another separate question, do you ever have to test on any animals during medical school ? Thank you soo much!
Giovanna Ochoa No problem! Postbaccs are usually to fix things you’re weak in like a low gpa. If you really like psychology, you could just major in that and take premed reqs and other med related classes outside your major requirements. If you haven’t already looked into clinical psychology, that could be a good option for you too.
I’d recommend you figure out what you really want to do (clinical psychology vs psychiatry vs another route since you seem to be passionate about psych), and then go from there. If youre 100% sure you want to be a psychiatrist, then you could consider what I said above. Clinical psychology is a PhD program I believe, and other related professions will have their own requirements.
We don’t have tests on animals, but we do have to know things like animal hosts/vectors for different microbes (very limited animal knowledge vs vets who focus on animal medicine).
Adnan A thank you so much ! This really helped me a lot! I will definitely just take pre med reqs than instead of the Postbaccalaureate. I will definitely look into clinical psychology as well and figure out which one is more for me. Thank you!!!
Giovanna Ochoa No problem, lmk if you have other questions, and good luck with whatever you decide!
Psych's the new move
Yeah, it’s a great career!
Can you please a do a family medicine interview next ? 💋
Claire Nyesha I’m working on it! :)

@@DrAdnan 😳
I'm definitely late to the ball game on this video, but I'm currently in my spring semester of my sophomore year. I'm finishing up O-chem, and my GPA is around a 3.32. I'm terrified that I won't get into medical school because of these classes, but Psychiatry is everything I have ever wanted to do.
You still have 1-2 years to bring your gpa up, and even if you didn’t you could probably get into a med school if the rest of your application was really good (MCAT, EC’s, LORs, etc). You got this! 🙌
My story: I'm 26, I try to live healthy, eat good, I'm 5'2, 102 pounds. I suffer with chronic pain, fatigue, sky high blood pressure, short of breath. I've had blood test after blood test (normal.) except inflammation blood test. A CT scan showed "Deterioration of joints." I was diagnosed with Degenerative Osteo Arthritis. By a Rheumatologist. I also have an eye condition called ROP that destorts my vision at times. Living in chronic pain has uprooted my life, my job is hanging by a thread due to my inability to keep up. I get depressed and anxious I worry about being homeless. I'm scared. I seen a psychiatrist today. He was really nice to me and empathetic. He pulled up all my medical documents. He told me that's a good idea to apply for social security disability because of my arthritis at such a young age. He doesn't work for them, Hes just a regular psychiatrist. I'm at a loss. Coping is overwhelming.
I’m so sorry you’re going through all of that :(. I’m glad you were able to find someone to help at least a little bit, and really hope you find others to help you more. I wish I could do more to help. Stay strong, friend.
Adnan A Thanks so much!!! That is so sweet of you. I do the best I can with the situation I'm in. My doctors are trying to make me comfortable on medications, although I have break through pain and emotional distress. I volunteer in my community, I like to help people at food pantries and at the humane society I hold the kittens & give the puppies company. Animals are great therapy. My heart melts when a kitten purrs in my arms or a dog wags his tail when he sees me. I have a fur baby in my apartment. A 1 year old cat. I love her so much. Hope you're doing well.
Destany No problem! I respect your resilience and dedication to improving your situation. It’s great that you find comfort in giving back, and in forming relationships with people and animals around you. I’m happy for you that you have a cat for comfort- sounds like a blessing. I’m fine, thanks for the positive vibes!
Adnan A you're welcome!! I was born the smallest female survivor at the Iowa children's hospital in the NICU at 1 pound 2 oz preemie. Recently I met the doctor that saved my life. He didn't know I was there to meet him. You can watch the story its on RUclips. ruclips.net/video/ahg83NZAmcY/видео.html
Adnan A Yes i agree with you. I try to keep busy. I am even in college. However, I had to take medical leave from work due to constantly having to clock out to go home. I almost lost my job but the medical leave saved it. Now I'm back at work but I'm struggling to keep up and my manager is getting irritated. I pulled out for the semester in college. I hope to start back in January. I never thought I'd be this young living the degenerative arthritis. I never thought it even affected people like this. It's a completely painful flares.

Sounds like you’d be a great psychiatrist- future Dr. K, maybe ;)
Are you studying to be a psychologist?
Nope, and that’s not a specialty through med school so I’d have to apply to a completely different program to do so.
@@DrAdnan what are you looking to become specifically? Keep going brother. You are doing well in life.
Shade On A Cool Day family medicine! Thank you- that really means a lot!
@@DrAdnan hey bro would you donate a dollar or two to my go fund me?
@@DrAdnan bro why not give a dollar?
Are you adils brothers
Nida Ahmed Yeah, you should ask him why he doesn’t post anymore
She undermines the amount of education needed to become a clinical psychologist. After college, you need to go into a PhD program in clinical psychology which typically takes around 5-7 years which is actually much longer than medical school.
Knowing her, that wasn’t her intention at all. Medical school is 4 years after college, but psychiatry residency is 4 years, and specialty (fellowship) training is extra, which means psychiatrists will have 8-10 years of graduate training. I appreciate your civil disagreement, however.
Correction: after talking with Dr. Pia about this, I was mistaken, and psychiatrists are formally trained even longer than I mentioned:
“Adult psychiatry residency: 4 years after med school graduation
Child psychiatry residency: 4 years adult psychiatry plus 2 years child psychiatry (6 years) or you can decide early that you want child and do 3 years adult psych and 2 years child fellowship (5 years)
Forensic specialization and others have different amounts of time, but usually are added on to the 4 years of psychiatry residency.
So MINIMUM is four years of adult residency. All the other options take years more.”

Too many ads
I didn’t manually add ads, youtube auto spaced them
‘’Mhm’’ x90 times. Please stop
Mhm 👍
@@DrAdnan Fantastic video tho. I love your content!
honestly I have never seen a psychiatrist/ psychologist/ nurse/ other psych staff/ ot help anyone before. at their wards they have no human rights and mistreat innocent lives like criminals
I see psychiatrists and the other health professionals you mentioned help a lot of people every day
Adnan A most likely you are their staff pretending to be none staff. the real patients their families and close friends know that this is not the truth
Humor: Interviewer: "How many people have you treated for Alzheimer's?" You: "Ma'am, I have treated many lunatics like you"! 😎
I’m a guy though lol
Its a sham.
I’m sorry if you’ve had bad experiences, but the data (and the vast majority of patients’ anecdotal experiences) would disagree
One video and 50 ads sounds so ridiculous!
