How does psychiatry being a pseudoscience equate to being unbalanced and unreasonable? Your logic itself is abysmal. SSRIs are an effective treatment for depression -- this has been supported by clinical trials and actual scientific experiments. You know what isn't science? Pulling bs arguments out of your ass.

depression is tricky. I may agree to a certain extent that there's heavy pharmaceutical ties and financial motives behind some self funded clinical trials in depression/tx resistant depression and that the findings are not always translatable to clinical practice. That said, i disagree with your statement that psychiatry is a pseudoscience. Theres strong neuroscience to back it up. Psychosis in schizophrenia or even drug-induced psychosis has strong underlying neural mechanisms (dopamine/5HT, frontal cortex) as shown by imaging studies. And I'm saying these are longitudinal studies that have looked at >700 people across many years of their lives. Bipolar is another one and mood stabilizers (lithium) have shown great efficacies in reducing mania episodes. My point is, medicine doesn't just cure disorders, it helps improve quality of life, especially in those with chronic debilitating conditions like schizos/bipolar. And psychiatry is about getting these folks back to their lives where they can function in the society. Bro, whatever beliefs/values you hold, I respect your opinion. I just disagree with your statement. glad to hear your thoughts tho
I'm in med school and recently thought about majoring in psychiatry . this video corrected lots of illusions I had about the field and got me really excited to think about it seriously . Thank you SM
Psychiatry has always been on my top lists of careers. However I went on to explore other careers like journalism and theatre arts just to come back to find my first love still waiting for me more now than ever. I went back to school to get my AAS and thought I would be in business management, after taking psychology again I remembered how much I loved to study the mind ever since I was a child. I never thought about actually becoming a doctor in it until now.I have so many reasons as to why I want to become one but now I'm just researching which schools are right for me to receive my bachelor's and so forth. As exciting as this is I think I'll keep this journey to myself until I'm complete with getting my degree. I don't want any distractions.
I am a psychology student who's planning to become a psychiatrist someday. I am also seeing a psychiatrist for my mental illness and I cherish her a lot because she has helped me deal with my issues. she's a great person overall ❤️❤️. secondly, I am planning to become one because I want to help people who have gone through what I've gone through and it's sentimental for me. I want them to get better.❤️❤️ thank you for this video, it's very inspirational and helpful for those who wantd to become a psychiatrist. Dr. Kass seems a great person, I am glad he is helping people out there ❤️❤️
Just a question just want a opinion on why you do have any objective testing on serotonin yer you blame it all on serotonin while no test is perfect I just don't understand why many psychrurst don't understand they thing like infection which can cause OCD many mental health disorders have psychuk cause I am just wondering why you don't do a better job I am genrlssing your profession a bit but with medication that can increase the Risk of suicide in people I just don't understand why you wouldn't be more careful
I would advise people to shadow a psychologist and ward. It will really let you see if you want to become one. I’ve worked as a security officer in a hospital and let me tell you. It can be so rewarding and so exhausting at the same time. People get violent when they’re not in their right mind. Just food for thought
I am in the process of becoming a psychiatrist. Currently in my 2nd year of college, this video made me so excited for when I'm finally at the point of completing my residency. I have a lot of schizophrenic family members and I just really want to be the change in how this mental health disorder is seen and even treated. Thank you for this super helpful vid!
I plan on entering the field as well, and am very excited for it. Very inspiring, definitely confirmed a lot of what I was already thinking about the profession. Thank :)
Galderik the fact that you came to a video about psychiatry just to hate and destroy other people’s aspirations shows your pathetic personality, not to mention the fact you liked your own comment
Thank you so much for this video. It gave me an in-depth, realistic view of med-School and residency. I have fallen in love with treating and helping people heal through designing treatment plans for patients. This video helped solidify why I desire to go into psychiatry.
That 8-5 schedule is really appealing. I'm torn between psychiatry and Internal Medicine. Can you suggest any psychiatry exterships or observerships? US-IMG here. Your reply would be greatly appreciated
That could be good or bad for me. I’m 14 rn and want to be a Psychiatrist since there isn’t much competition, it’s well payed, and has a nice lifestyle
Also YES. Thank you so much for clarifying schizophrenia. So many times I have to explain to people the difference between MPD and schizophrenia. But there's different types of schizophrenia and they can look very different from each other too. Like paranoid schizophrenia, will look different from auditory schizophrenia. Schizo-affective will look different as well. That's all. 🤣
If you suspect that you may be have schizophrenia it's best to go see a psychiatrist or psychologist. I'm not qualified just yet to diagnose you, especially not over the internet. However, the DSM has the classifications in which someone would use to diagnose a patient with Schizophrenia. Auditory hallucinations, visual hallucinations, paranoia, delusions, disorganized speech or behavior are all symptoms. Those are positive symptoms. Negative symptoms could Include lessened emotional expression, lessened inner personal skills, etc. These symptoms have to have been happening for a continued amount of time with in a specific pairing. A psychiatrist or psychologist may also look into schizioaffective disorder or other mood disorders or delusion disorders depending. The good news? There's a variety of treatment for Schizophrenia and many people who live normal healthy lives. The sooner you get help the more likely it is you'll be onto your new normal and adjusted. I can't wait for you to get there and we're cheering you on. Best, Rhi
I'm fifteen and recently I've felt like I really want to pursue psychiatry ever since I found a book about it in my house lol and now I'm so interested
Thank you for the video, very informative and it helped me make a decision. The comment section has a couple of people who should consider psychiatric help.
Woooh wooh woow it was my dream to become a doctor since grade 1 && later I decided & I really want yo become a psychiatrist. I've searched about it a lot. Randomly this video popped up on my wall. Thankyou sooo much!!!!!! ❤❤
I’m 19, have never cared for school and I want to be a psychiatrist but I’m scared of the great grades I have to achieve. I start college Spring semester.
I'm on disability for depression. I was born with a minor deformity of my fingers from my left hand. I also have a stutter that I think is the major problem I'm having problems mentally and emotionally.
I don't understand why there's so much hate for psychiatry from the public. Understanding the link between mental health and the brain is very important. I get that people have suffered from the treatment of individual psychiatrists themselves, but to say psychiatry is a pseudoscience and not a valid medical field is pretty ignorant. The DSM is imperfect, psychiatrists are imperfect too, but these people are highly trained, knowledgeable and most often want the best for their patients. Sad that the public opinion of psychiatry is like this. Let's destigmatize.
Im a senior medical student and i have a really growing interest in psychiatry, I couldn’t see my self in a speciality different than psych. However, my only concern about choosing it is feeling that I’m wasting all my medical knowledge in a field that doesn’t use it much! Please share your thoughts
No bro you will always use what you learnt in Internal medicine and other specialities. It is pretty much like practicing internal medicine you examine patient see meds he takes and then perscribe drugs or edit doses.
He is right, you will definitely be using your other medical knowledge too. I was also worried about this but you’ll see when you start working. Also, a lot of these patients you will be with for a long time and honestly they depend on you. They build like a trust with you. And from my experience they ask me about my opinion on other medical problems they have. They show me EKGs, opinion in if they should to a surgery or not, etc. Ofcourse, if I know I help. If I’m not 100% sure cuz I don’t use that information everyday and it’s not my specialty, I be honest and tell them what I think but that they should follow up with a specialist. Trust bro, you will apply your medical knowledge
I am going Into high schools I really want to learn a lot about mental illness. I want to be a psychiatrist when I'm older. I even have my own mental health blog on qoura. I love it and hope I can one day help others when it comes to mental health professionally.
Trying to decide if I should try going to med school to be a psychiatrist or to continue on to my masters to do psychology as a therapist and potentially a psychologist. 😭 Help. Lol I basically have a year and a half to decide but HATE not being set in stone.
Rhiannon Houghteling it depends if you would want to sacrifice a couple of year of your life. I don’t recommend doing it 100% for the paycheck but you would be getting payed a lot more as a psychiatrist than as a Psychologist. It’s a pretty chill career as far as I’m concerned and if you really want to do it then go for it!
You should also think if you believe medicine would help some people with their mental health because if you go through becoming a psychiatrist, but don't feel comfortable prescribing medicine to patients that might need it, then I don't reccomend studying for the psychiatrist path. Also remember never decide a career because of the salary because you need to make sure you enjoy this career path. I wish you luck for what path you end up choosing!
I can't tell you what you need to do, but follow your interests and talk to as many in these fields as you can. I posted a few videos about being drawn to the speciality. Good luck!
I want to be a psychiatrist when I grow up, but I’m undecided whether I should take a psychology or neuroscience major. I wouldn’t mind taking either, because psychology helps develop the skills needed to talk to patients, and neuroscience is an in-depth learning of the brain and nervous system, which I love learning. What advice would be given in this case?
Double major if you think you can. I'm double majoring in bio and psych. If a double major isn't possible then see if you can do one as a minor or just take classes from that field. Good luck!
@@danielaf.5001 It depends on the course load for each major and your gen ed's. I got a lot of my gen ed's done when I came in/covered in the major. You probably would have to take more than the average number of credits for several semesters (at my school the average is 16 and I've taken 18, 20, 20, 22 in my first 4 semesters). You could start as a minor and change to a major once you figure out the course load and what you can handle while still taking care of yourself. For me it hasn't been all that bad but I'm just generally stressed so idk lol
u can take psychology but to be able to go far in that field, u have to do further studies n maybe do Clinical Psychology or Forensic Psychology etc, Psychiatry is tougher bcos u need to finish the whole medical school then only u can enter the residency
Okay, so long story short, I’ve decided to that I want to be a psychiatrist, but I’m not sure what the steps are from my bachelors. I’m two years out from my undergrad in psychology. What would you recommend as my next steps to get me where you are?
Hi Juliet. Please ignore Aeritecn, clearly this is more about him than you. To answer your question, to be a psychiatric you need to attend 4 years of medical school as well as an additional 3 years of psychiatry residency. You should start by googling medical school requirements. The general pre-requisites include a year of biology, a year of inorganic chemistry, a year of organic chemistry, a year of physics, a year of math, and the rest will be covered by your psych degree including some of the math (e.g. statistics) and behavioral sciences. You can complete these courses at a community college, as part of a post bach program, or maybe you’ve already completed them. Once you finish those courses, the next step would be to start studying for the MCAT, which is about a 7-hour long test covering all the topics you’ll learn from your pre req classes. There’s a lot to be done, and it’s definitely not an easy path, but if you’re genuinely interested, I say it’s never too late to look into it! Feel free to email me at snajary94@gmail.com if you have any further questions!
I find psychiatry fascinating, but I don’t think I would be able to help people with mental illness without feeling really sad. Especially the patients who don’t get better. 😢
I’m only 13, bit I’ve always wanted to be a trama doctor or paramedic. (Leaning toward trama doctor). You see people at their worst, but see them leave healed. The connection with colleagues to me is amazing. I want to be in a hospital every day I can be, night shifts, and on-call room discussions, I just can’t wait!
Most psychiatry residency is based on med management with some component of behavior therapy. Most of the behavior therapy is referred to psychologists
@Galderik That's often the stereotype of psychiatrists, at least in my country. That they're often mentally more sick than the patients they're treating.
Symptoms of behavioral and cognitive disorders in adults: - Impulsiveness and hyperactivity, with inability to regulate behavior. - Poor concentration and short-term memory. - Constant mood and personality changes. - Emotional immaturity. - Inability to be aware and correct their negative traits and mistakes. - Childish and loud behavior. - Lack of empathy and understanding the perspective of others. - Little or no perseverance and discipline. - Erratic, disorganized and unpredictable behavior. - Obsessions and compulsions. - Inability to remain quiet in public spaces. - Poor spatial skills and clumsy demeanor. - Outbursts of neurosis.
U will do all right...it's like digestion..as long as u put in boiled food..well heated... symbolically speaking.. A guy in Manipal told me this... I think a psych has to see if they r chill...if no chill maybe take a break... But it will hard for patients....
Yes! I’m a psychiatrist with both :) I find I can relate better to my patients. Thankfully my symptoms are not severe enough to interfere with my work. But I was still nervous about it- and I’m glad I did it!
@Targetta you sound like a broken record and are getting side tracked , i just pointed out the inconsistency in your argument . Which is it do psychiatrist have mental illness or do they not?
@Spotek 'denial of facts'. Is that copy pasted in your keyboard? Like bruh grab your freaking books and study. And yes they're doctors. They go to med school and work to get that title not comment on RUclips like you
Plz I want the exp and then take it elsewhere to my own practice I know build clients . I’m also into holistic healing and that be soooo great for communities in poverty

Thanks for posting this really helps teens who are deciding to choose a career
I'm in med school and recently thought about majoring in psychiatry . this video corrected lots of illusions I had about the field and got me really excited to think about it seriously . Thank you SM
How's med school I really wanna know. Can you tell me the pros and cons. What to expect
same can you please let us know how med school is lmfao
Super chilled and laid back, when compared to some other specialty! Totally considering Psychiatry!!
This makes me SO pumped to become a psychiatrist
I love this field and ive worked in this field all my adult life. Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching Nicole!
Lol bodoh bodoh gila you
Do You Know How To Tell If Someone If Schizophrenic? I'm Scared I Am…
Dr. Kass seems a great person, I am glad he is helping people out there ❤️❤️
We need more of psych residents!...i love psychiatry and want to opt in future...😊....thanks doc

After quarantine, gonna save money from my current job to go to medschool 😍❤ this is a sign
I would advise people to shadow a psychologist and ward. It will really let you see if you want to become one. I’ve worked as a security officer in a hospital and let me tell you. It can be so rewarding and so exhausting at the same time. People get violent when they’re not in their right mind. Just food for thought
This is so wholesome! Definitely shows me a different side of psychiatry and makes me want to become one more! Thank you
This is exactly what I needed to hear. Going into med school, I wanted to do one field, but now I’m really deciding between 2 different specialties.
Go the other specialty

I am in the process of becoming a psychiatrist. Currently in my 2nd year of college, this video made me so excited for when I'm finally at the point of completing my residency. I have a lot of schizophrenic family members and I just really want to be the change in how this mental health disorder is seen and even treated. Thank you for this super helpful vid!
I plan on entering the field as well, and am very excited for it. Very inspiring, definitely confirmed a lot of what I was already thinking about the profession. Thank :)

Congrats on med school. Forget the haters and keep it pushing! 👍
Galderik the fact that you came to a video about psychiatry just to hate and destroy other people’s aspirations shows your pathetic personality, not to mention the fact you liked your own comment

Yes! Gila Life!!! Go graduate to be bodoh! Yippppeeeee! 🙂
How's med school going?
I love your vibe, you're so relaxed 💛
Applying to psych this year. This video convinced me to take a good look at it. Thanks, Dr. Jubbal!
Thank you so much for this video. It gave me an in-depth, realistic view of med-School and residency. I have fallen in love with treating and helping people heal through designing treatment plans for patients. This video helped solidify why I desire to go into psychiatry.
I want to get residency in Psychiatry at Stanford or at UCSF!!! Both are my top choices. Praying to God for that.
That 8-5 schedule is really appealing. I'm torn between psychiatry and Internal Medicine. Can you suggest any psychiatry exterships or observerships? US-IMG here. Your reply would be greatly appreciated
The best choice would depend on your personality.
Super insight into the work and wellness balance. Thanks for sharing such an articulate resume into Psyche life : - )
Psych is going to blow up in the next few years. It could become one of the highest paid docs. Even at this time there’s a lot of shortage already
plus there are lots of mental health issue coming up these recent years n im pretty sure the number will keep increasing
That could be good or bad for me. I’m 14 rn and want to be a Psychiatrist since there isn’t much competition, it’s well payed, and has a nice lifestyle
@@matthewreyes9640 Basically the same for me
this video is fantastic , im gonna be doing the sat’s next year and im really considering becoming a psychiatrist , this video was amazing !!
In the 4:30 min Kevin is saying "it's 4:30" 😅 am I the only one who noticed this?
I noticed it too😂
Wow scary what are the odds of that ?
I too am contemplating between plastic surgery and psychiatry, but I never knew this particular dilemma was more common!
🤨
Love to see one of these in a different state
That's all. 🤣
I Think I Might Be Schizophrenic, Do You Know How To Tell If Someone Is Schizophrenic?
Best,
Rhi
awesome video, really helped me decide to start my path into psychiatry after a lot of indecisiveness. thank you!!!

psychiatrists are not doctors. Psychiatry is bullshit. Please spend all that effort and years of study to become a real doctor
I’m 19, have never cared for school and I want to be a psychiatrist but I’m scared of the great grades I have to achieve. I start college Spring semester.
Hope it worked out
This was an awesome interview!

This was sooo interesting and informative!
Thanks a ton...gave a lot of clarity!!!
I'm on disability for depression. I was born with a minor deformity of my fingers from my left hand. I also have a stutter that I think is the major problem I'm having problems mentally and emotionally.
🤗
I like psychiatry it’s my first choice. What engages my mind is that what’s the worst thing may happen in psychiatry?
the patient themselves most likely
So cool, thanks! Definitely more interested in the career.
Im literally stuck between surgery & psych ! good to see its not that uncommon lol!
Go surgery
It's not.. I'm stuck between those two too
You gotta choose because they are two completely different routes
I don't understand why there's so much hate for psychiatry from the public. Understanding the link between mental health and the brain is very important. I get that people have suffered from the treatment of individual psychiatrists themselves, but to say psychiatry is a pseudoscience and not a valid medical field is pretty ignorant. The DSM is imperfect, psychiatrists are imperfect too, but these people are highly trained, knowledgeable and most often want the best for their patients. Sad that the public opinion of psychiatry is like this. Let's destigmatize.
Please do life of radiologist :)
I’ve always been interested in Psychiatry all my life and seeing these videos sort of just makes it even more intense ✨
Wish me luck for my future 💗
It was so helpful! Thank you!
I cannot waittttt!
I am a Clinical Psychologist. Your Psychiatrists look so nice over there...

You also must place on your mcat if you want to be one. Get good grades and do mission trips or volunteer to better your chances

Good luck!
Well if you want to be a psychiatrist start studying for the MCAT now!!!
Next DITL of a Family Physician
I want to be a psychiatrist when I grow up, but I’m undecided whether I should take a psychology or neuroscience major. I wouldn’t mind taking either, because psychology helps develop the skills needed to talk to patients, and neuroscience is an in-depth learning of the brain and nervous system, which I love learning. What advice would be given in this case?
Double major if you think you can. I'm double majoring in bio and psych. If a double major isn't possible then see if you can do one as a minor or just take classes from that field. Good luck!
Is double majoring as stressful as it sounds?
Neuropsychiatry
this makes me wanna be a psychiatrist even more 😭 but unfortunately i think i'm just not cut out for the schooling
Lol I Google my doctor's phone number and I find him on youtube

I love your videos, they are very informative and you kinda look like buzz lightyear!
Okay, so long story short, I’ve decided to that I want to be a psychiatrist, but I’m not sure what the steps are from my bachelors. I’m two years out from my undergrad in psychology. What would you recommend as my next steps to get me where you are?
Aeritecn I do, actively.
Great video ! But nothing like this eye opening comment section , a day in the life indeed .
I think I just found my career plan! In undergrad right now confused about life and what I want to do😅
I find psychiatry fascinating, but I don’t think I would be able to help people with mental illness without feeling really sad. Especially the patients who don’t get better. 😢
Have you guys watched A Beautiful Mind?
i love that movie
I’m only 13, bit I’ve always wanted to be a trama doctor or paramedic. (Leaning toward trama doctor). You see people at their worst, but see them leave healed. Hey Kevin, do you work with psychologists? Is their work day similar to yours?
Most psychiatry residency is based on med management with some component of behavior therapy. Most of the behavior therapy is referred to psychologists

@Galderik That's often the stereotype of psychiatrists, at least in my country. That they're often mentally more sick than the patients they're treating.

A guy in Manipal told me this...
I think a psych has to see if they r chill...if no chill maybe take a break...
But it will hard for patients....
Can you be a psychiatrist if you have problems yourself? Like depression or anxiety
Yes! I’m a psychiatrist with both :) I find I can relate better to my patients. Thankfully my symptoms are not severe enough to interfere with my work. But I was still nervous about it- and I’m glad I did it!
@Spotek um...not necessarily.
@Targetta you can't both deny the existence of mental illness and say that psychiatrists suffer from mental illness . Choose one
