Thank you, doctor for speaking about this. Sometimes as students we think that our only option is to work with hospitalized patients, but, knowing several more options makes this whole psychiatry world more interesting! Thank you very much :D I hope you can make more videos of this kind that are focused on guiding med students in this path of mental health care :).

Is there such a thing as research psychiatry? Where you're trained in the field of medicine, but your career mostly revolves around research into various mental disorders, psychotropic medications, and the like?

I'm navigating college and I'm the first in my family to go to college for an MD but I'm a little out of the loop and Google is only so helpful lol what do you recommend to start in school for a degree to obtain for child and adolescent psychiarty?

I plan on being a therapist (lcsw) and I’ve always steered away from psychiatry but now in the great year of 2022 I’m drawn to it. Perhaps I may study medicine after I get my feet wet in mental health more (currently in social services).

Also what if I want to be a psychiatrist but not really prescribe medicine? Like being able to if absolutely necessary but wanting to provide therapy for the most part.
The good thing about being in this field is that the plan is up to you. If you observe issues that aren’t truly in need of medicine at the moment or ever than talk therapy and cognitive therapy may be the better option.
Have you considered psychology its pretty simular to psychiatry but, the main difference between the two is that a psychiatrist has trained as a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. A psychologist is not a medical doctor and can't prescribe medication.
Hello Dr. Mitnaul, I'm currently an MS3 that would love to pursue psychiatry - I will be applying to psych residency programs this year! I was wondering if you could do a video on what it takes to become a competitive candidate for psychiatry residency - thank you so much for your informative content!

Dr. Mitnaul, can you elaborate on the pros/cons of having your own private practice and schedule? How do you organize yourself around your practice?

Hi! Can you please make a video about what makes a good psychiatrist? How do I know which one to pick?
